WR Brandon Aiyuk, SF (3 Viewers)

I roster Aiyuk in 1 dynasty league and believe the articles with positive news and write off the ones with negative news. ;)

I took him as my WR2 in a startup last year and am obviously disappointed. if he can turn into my plug and play WR3 I’d be ecstatic and I’ll just nail my new WR2 in this years rookie draft at the 1.7. Simple as that ;)

Day 12 recap: Trey Sermon shows out during the final day of training camp

There is a clear difference in the timing and rhythm between Lance and Samuel when compared to Lance and Brandon Aiyuk. Consistently throughout camp, balls thrown by Lance intended for Samuel have been a bit off in regards to timing, and I think it just comes down to the lack of consistent reps between the two.

It’s no coincidence that Aiyuk and Lance appear to be much more in sync, given the amount of time the two spent working together during the offseason. I think it can be best summarized as Lance still getting a feel for how Samuel will track a ball in the air and pinpointing the requisite timing to execute deep shots downfield.

Wide receivers

Brandon Aiyuk continued his scorching hot training camp, hauling in a pair of impressive catches deep down the left sideline and regularly winning with his release at the line of scrimmage. Aiyuk is looking like every bit of the player the 49ers coveted when they traded up in the first round to select him in 2020.

NBC Sports' Peter King said Brandon Aiyuk has been the "star" of 49ers camp.

July reports suggested Aiyuk was struggling to get on the same page with Trey Lance, but King said the pair have a "very tight relationship" and good chemistry. After climbing out of Kyle Shanahan's doghouse, Aiyuk finished 2021 strong, placing as the WR24 from Week 9 forward. If Lance is able to move the offense, Aiyuk will be a great value in the 11th round of Yahoo drafts.

Well this has certainly got my attention
Fantasy football top expert Jim Coventry is all in on Aiyuk this year. He won the Fantasy expert league Kings Classic last year by nailing Kupp and James Conner. He thinks he will outscore Deebo this year.
I wouldn’t doubt it. Word around the Bay Area has been that Aiyuk & Lance have great chemistry. They worked out in the off-season together, too. Check this out

Did we ever get any clarity on his really slow start last year? Obviously he was in the doghouse but do we know if it was because he was out of shape, bad attitude, missed team meetings, etc?

Wish I could link it, but I don't remember where I read it. Covid camps killed Aiyuk. He came in in '20 and the game was too "easy" for him. He thought he could still be an athlete that just dominated. Then the pre-21 camp basically didn't happen. He didn't work out, wasn't disciplined, got dinged, and Shanny got pissed. Aiyuk really wasn't in football shape and healthy till mid-year, and that's when he started coming on.

This year...Gonna be different. Lance + Aiyuk = Love

You meant 'word around the Trey Area' amirite?

“Word on these streets”

Aiyuk’s bromance with Lance this off-season is the worst kept secret in the Trey Area. Hella. Fo shizzle. (I’m in the east bay, so “hella”’ was obligatory).

I am kind of torn on this as I had Aiyuk last year and he didn’t do much down the stretch when healthy. I am not sure how effective Trey will be passing yet. His 2 game stint last year was a disaster. It’s a coin flip but we want the big upside, right? He is value given where he is drafted.

Had him the past 2 seasons with last year being a big disappointment. Love that he's getting hype but it's dependent on Lance performing during the season and staying healthy. As soon as Jimmy G sees that field Aiyuk becomes the option after Kittle, Samuel and the RBs.

I'm having a hard time convincing myself Lance is going to be the exception and be a young QB who can support 3 receivers (it's exceedingly rare.) I don't like depending on edge cases to work out.

Overall I feel like Lance should be a QB1, Mitchell will be a solid RB2, Kittle & Deebo are both Top 4 at their positions. I do not feel confident at all that Aiyuk will have a Top 24 season this year. He's been WR35/WR34 his first two seasons and situation wise I feel like this year will be more of the same. Love the talent but not enough balls to go around. IMO

I don't think it's that clear cut at wr. Just as a receiver Deebo isn't elite.

I guess I'm in the minority of people who think Deebo has a 15%-20% regression.

If Aiyuk, who isn't a burner, is the precise route runner creating separation in space on short/intermediate routes I think a young QB could lock onto that.

But really, who knows?

I always felt that Deebo would be better for the inexperienced QB due to his insane YAC ability. Just get the ball in his hands and let him do his thing with it. I think Deebo still has the best FF numbers on the team this year by a pretty wide margin. I might be in the minority there though.

No, I don't think you're in the minority at all. His YAC is part of the reason I think he'll regress on the stat sheet. Eight rushing TDs in 2021, on 59 carries, also feels like a career outlier at the end of the day. It feels the league got caught flatfooted when Deebo's role morphed in the middle of last season. This year I think they catch up a little bit.

Deebo and Kittle can single handedly win a week for you. 30-35-30 point games. Never seen anything like that from Aiyuk in either of his first two seasons.

To be fair we didn't see that from Deebo in his first two seasons either.

It's hard for me to think Deebo isn't "elite" coming off a 1400 yard receiving year, and I'd much prefer to own him over Aiyuk today, but the huge wildcard is the QB change. I'd still expect it to go Deebo, Kittle, then Aiyuk, but we'll have to see what happens.

Deebo is elite. I just see a significant regression coming. He's one of the guys I hope people take early 2nd round so players I like more fall to me.

Folks actually think Deebo can’t repeat 123 targets and a line of 77-1400-6? Oh OK, we can agree to disagree.

Last year you could take away half his rushing yards and half his rushing TDs, he’d still be Top 5 WR. There’s been no indication since contract posturing ended Kyle will use him less in the run game though. He def has upside on the receiving volume side.

IMO

It's possible, but I don't think a "significant regression" should be the baseline. Also, he could have a decent regression without Aiyuk being a beneficiary at all.

It seems every day I see another report about how fantastic Aiyuk has been throughout camp, and how natural the Lance-Aiyuk connection has been. We’ve seen explosive flashes from Aiyuk demonstrating his 1st round draft pedigree, and his skill set seems to mesh perfectly with Lance’s. At what point do we start reaching for Aiyuk before he vaults into a top 12 dynasty asset? The stars seem to be aligning between Lance and Aiyuk.

Obviously Deebo is there, but he has an unconventional role as a WR/RB hybrid which doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. Not only does that increase the likelihood of a Deebo injury, but we could see Aiyuk become Lance’s most productive WR simply due to on-field chemistry and style of play.

This needn’t devolve into Aiyuk vs Deebo, but rather the possibility that Lance is really good, the 49ers offense can be great, and that both Deebo and Aiyuk could be fantasy stars in their respective roles.

I'm irrationally optimistic about Aiyuk this year but I do worry that Lance isn't going to throw enough to support Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle and I can't figure out who suffers.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 2-of-2 targets for 40 yards in the 49ers' Week 1 loss to the Bears, adding a seven-yard rush.

Aiyuk also lost a catch to an offensive pass interference call. Aiyuk appeared on track for a huge day, turning a jet sweep into seven yards on the 49ers' first snap before making a 31-yard catch three plays later. Then he fell silent along with the rest of the 49ers' offense on an afternoon where the rain was the star attraction. Trey Lance completed just 13 passes in awful conditions, limiting the volume opportunities for everyone. Lance's volume is going to be a concern every week for the time being but not usually to this degree. Aiyuk will remain an upside WR3 for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Week 1 feels like a a semi-mulligan
I would go with a total mulligan and that's for both teams(so don't despair Kmeters)

The disappointment of his fantasy performance might be obscuring for some the fact that the loss of Mitchell, which puts an increased rushing load on Deebo's plate, is a potential boon for Aiyuk.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 5-of-8 targets for 63 yards in the 49ers' Week 2 win over the Seahawks.

Aiyuk paced the team in targets a week after seeing just two looks in the passing game. Jimmy Garoppolo, who stepped in for an injured Trey Lance, looked his way on a few deep shots once in the lineup. Aiyuk will likely play second-fiddle to Deeb Samuel and George Kittle, but the change to Garoppolo should improve the outlook of the passing game as a whole. Aiyuk enters his Week 3 matchup with the Broncos on the WR3/4 borderline.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 3-of-8 targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in San Francisco's Week 3 loss to Denver.

The touchdown was an easy walk-in on a wide receiver screen from inside the five. Aiyuk was still heavily involved without Trey Lance -- he's actually led the 49ers in targets in each of the last two games and had 44.6% of their targeted air yards tonight -- but the 49ers passing game was kept in check. Aiyuk will be on the WR3/FLEX line against the Rams in Week 4, but his underlying stats are all quite positive. He just needs better ball placement from his quarterback.

Brandon Aiyuk caught all four of his targets for 37 yards in the 49ers' Week 4 win over the Rams.

Aiyuk's four targets tied with two others for second on the team behind Deebo Samuel's seven. Samuel did all of the heavy lifting with a 6/115/1 performance. Aiyuk has now seen 12 targets in two full starts with Jimmy Garoppolo under center, catching seven for 76 yards and a touchdown. Aiyuk will be an upside WR3 next week against the Panthers.

I watched about 2/3rds of the game. Aiyuk's involved for sure and they're scheming stuff up for him. I think this offense is still finding itself. They're not a dominant running team but they at least had some rhythm going in general on the offense. Jennings is more involved than I thought he'd be. I haven't checked the numbers but there was a point in the game when the announcers mentioned "They're going to have to get Kittle involved." It must have happened when I skipped a few drives. I'm guessing they're keeping him in to block because the OLine isn't what it used to be.

So they're dialing back the explosiveness of the offense to keep things on schedule a bit and protect Jimmy back there. The holes aren't as big for running and there's less space down the field for Aiyuk because the O Line isn't allowing them to.

The Rams D is good though (esp against the run) which is how SF wants to play). So perhaps facing CAR, ATL, KC etc. and if the OLine can start to gel, maybe they can get a little more explosive.

Still, targets= Deebo 7. 4 each for Aiyuk, Jennings, Kittle and 3 for McCloud. Have to think that he'll end up with 6 or so in a few more games.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 8-of-11 targets for 83 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' Week 6 loss to the Falcons.

Aiyuk led the 49ers in targets and was the only 49er to score a TD in the game. He also tied with George Kittle for the team lead in receiving yards. While 30 of Kittle's yards came on a meaningless final drive, Aiyuk was key to the 49ers' offense throughout the game. He appeared to be suffering from cramps at one point and briefly exited the game. However, at drinking some fluids he returned to play. It was a strong day for Aiyuk, but he'll need the 49ers to be pushed to the pass to have a good chance of another big day without scoring twice. Fortunately, the 49ers play the Chiefs in Week 7.

I have a feeling I’m not the only one to add “on my bench” when talking about Aiyuk’s stats from this week :(

Brandon Aiyuk caught 7-of-11 targets for 82 yards in the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Chiefs.

Aiyuk over the past two weeks has 15 catches for 165 yards and two scores as the Niners have been forced to the air against the Falcons and Chiefs, respectively. Any time the 49ers are chasing points, Aiyuk is a candidate to go off. The problem, of course, is Kyle Shanahan's insistence on a run-first offense that naturally limits passing volume. Aiyuk fended off KC defenders to secure a couple tough receptions in the second half on throws from Jimmy Garoppolo that were something short of accurate. His production will be frustrating because the Niners are sure to make Christian McCaffrey the focal point of their offense. Aiyuk is a reasonable WR3 play for Week 8 against the Rams.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 6-of-7 targets for 84 yards in the 49ers' Week 10 win over the Chargers.

Aiyuk was quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's preferred target in high leverage situations tonight, as he converted multiple third downs on everything from crossing routes to slants to outside curls. Even with the inflated receiving line, Aiyuk proved his growth as a blocker against an overpowered Chargers defensive front mired with injuries, making key blocks throughout the game. Aiyuk continues to maintain his WR2 status for fantasy managers as the 49ers prepare to face the Cardinals in Week 11.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 2-of-4 targets for 20 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' Week 11 win over the Cardinals.

Aiyuk scored from 13 yards out and seven yards out on his only two receptions against the Cardinals, showcasing his recent uptick in red zone involvement. The majority of Aiyuk's contributions came as a blocker as he routinely set the edge on Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey carries, but fantasy managers have to feel happy with the two-touchdown performance. Aiyuk remains the top pass-catcher for a 49ers team that asks tight end George Kittle to block at an increased rate and utilizes Deebo Samuel in the run game.

Brandon Aiyuk caught 2-of-4 targets for 19 yards in the 49ers' Week 15 win over the Seahawks.

Even with Deebo Samuel (ankle) on the shelf, Aiyuk remained one of the big losers of the 49ers' post-Jimmy Garoppolo offensive environment. Brock Purdy was called on to attempt just 26 passes, completing 17 of them. Christian McCaffrey was the leading target getter with eight, while slot types Jauan Jennings and Ray-Ray McCloud combined for eight. Aiyuk now has only four grabs on seven looks in two games since Purdy took over. We would expect Kyle Shanahan to try to get that corrected as the 49ers gear up for the playoffs, but it's clear he can no longer be treated as a WR2 and is now a boom/bust WR3.
