I don't think those players agents needed York's public comments to know that the money is going to dry up. Those guys are professional contract negotiators. They all know who's coming up for new contracts and what they're likely to get as well as projecting the salary cap. I think it's safe to say that York's comments had zero effect.

The nice part about being a Cowboy fan is that I have no idea what its like when an owner constantly puts his foot in his mouth and you just wish he'd shut..the..heck...up sometimes.

I think there's something to the players wanting to get theirs, and I think it's also that the players want to know that they are valued for what they are bringing to the team's success. That's only natural. BA belongs in SF and I hope they work it out.

If Aiyuk wants the benefits of free agency (pick your destination and name your price), he needs to play out his current contract like everyone else. Teams are more likely to meet the cost money-wise when they aren’t forced to give up draft capital or players on top of that. If you want to stay then find a number that makes sense.

Here’s my thing. If he has a set amount he wants and the 49ers aren’t close, then just take the trade to whoever is going to pay the most guaranteed money if it exceeds what the 49ers are offering. But if it’s close and he prefers staying, that’s what he should do and get it done with if he’s that worried about waiting another year or so. Him wanting to get top dollar right now and to be picky about where he goes, at a time when most teams have spent all offseason gearing up for the season, which is a few weeks away, is just causing a mess for all involved. This really needed to be resolved sooner.

They definitely can, particularly if they give them large signing bonuses which will spread their cap hits out over the life of the contract. They can make sure the worst of Purdy's salary doesn't hit the cap until 3-4 years from now (for example, Hurts signed his contract extension last year and only has cap hits of $13m and $21m this year and next).

I believe this is the crux of why the 49ers are playing a little bit of hardball here. If they just caved to every player who asked for an extension, they become an easy Mark for literally every player on the team.

They will re-sign Purdy. SF is going to roll a ton of cap room over from this season to next, which is how they are planning on managing that situation. They'll still need to make some tough choices and let some pro bowl caliber players go, however (both their starting CBs, probably).

Purdy will get a big extension before the 2025 season, which will of course immediately bump his cap number for 2025, but the big cap hits probably won't hit until 2027. That's how it typically works.

The San Francisco #49ers have met Brandon Aiyuk’s demands of Annual Salary (near $28M avg), per source.The hold up I’m told is:Amount of years & guaranteed $ on the deal. #Niners want to give Aiyuk a 3Yr extension (4yrs total), BA wants a 4Yr extension (5yrs total).

Which I find interesting, because you'd think the player would want the shorter deal to hit FA sooner when the salaries have all gone up again.

Does it even matter if he can sign a new contract today and choose to be disgruntled with it a year from now? ... straight outta the TO handbook, right?

I believe this is the crux of why the 49ers are playing a little bit of hardball here. If they just caved to every player who asked for an extension, they become an easy Mark for literally every player on the team.

I see a lot of people saying the 49ers have handled this terribly… I continue to disagree with that assertion for this reason and others I’ve previously stated.

The fact that it’s mid-August and they’re staring down the prospect of losing their best route-running WR (arguably best receiver since Deebo is a “wideback”) would make a trade for picks disastrous at this point.

It’s the “leverage” Aiyuk has manufactured, since he didn’t really have any when he started down this road.

Af the risk of stating the obvious, if they deal Aiyuk for picks & take a WR next year with said pick(s), that doesn’t do anything to offset losing him this year.

It's very possible they are. Lots of insiders and people doing the reporting are tighter with some teams than others. Just because teams aren't in the news, doesn't mean they aren't in play.
