And I totally can see how the guaranteed money is a big factor.
I get it, I'm not trying to be a turd or anything. Just seems like they are still going to be paying him somewhere in the area of $26-28M a year at the end of this. If you know that's where the end game is, just get there and focus on winning a SB. Too many things can go wrong in future years that may undermine that window. Climb through that window as quick as you can and figure everything else out as it comes (with as much planning as you can do, obviously). There are a couple of issues with that. It's obvious at this point that Aiyuk wants to stay with the Niners. If they were truly only $2m apart on salary before training camp, and now increasing guaranteed dollars is potentially going to get it done, the Niners could have avoided this whole thing by just giving him the guaranteed money then that they are apparently about to now. It’s not the Niners who dragged anything out.If the sticking point was really guaranteed money, and the Niners dragged this thing out into the middle of August with it being a major distraction and not having BA on the field, I'd call it anything but a master class.
Remember: Aiyuk is currently under contract. The 49ers had zero obligation to entertain an extension or a trade.
They went out of their way to do both.
There was reportedly a deal in place with the Pats, who were willing to pay Aiyuk $30M a year to play in New England.
Aiyuk rejected it. Putting that on SF is a little odd.
For a team that believes they are close to Super Bowl this season, seems like an odd thing to do, to invite drama and speculation rather than getting all their players on the field and focusing on the season.
1. The sticking point was apparently three years, versus four. That’s a difference of around $30 million.
2. It’s not just about this year. They have to prepare for next year as well. That means paying Brock Purdy. That means Fred Warner potentially asking for more money guaranteed. There are several other guys whose contracts are coming up as well.
Yes, the 49ers are in a win now window.. That doesn’t mean it’s 2024 or bust. This isn’t like my dynasty league where I traded away my future picks for players to help me go back to back and put it all on the line this year knowing that I’ll probably have to rebuild over the next two or three… Professional sport seems don’t typically operate like that. well, the ones outside of Cleveland anyway.
You’re quoting a post that was from before you’d asked me to not talk about Pretty Ricky, and I’ve honored your request.Again, if you want to continue the Rickey talk or anything about me that's not Aiyuk, please send me a PM and let's keep this thread Aiyuk.

I don't think those players agents needed York's public comments to know that the money is going to dry up. Those guys are professional contract negotiators. They all know who's coming up for new contracts and what they're likely to get as well as projecting the salary cap. Someone who called into the radio today had a very interesting point.
Jed York, owner of the 49ers, came out last year and said something to the effect of Brock Purdy’s contract will reset the QB market.
Then they went to the SB again.
So it might not be a coincidence that all these Niners cornerstone players suddenly asked for extensions or restructured contracts. Trent, CMC, Aiyuk, etc.
At the BBQ of life there are 2 kinds of people - the quick & the hungry. Maybe they didn’t wanna be hungry when the money dried up.
Don’t know how accurate it is, but it’s a great observation, and the timeline matches up. It’s absolutely possible that an owner’s big mouth is what drove all of this.

It'll be interesting. I think San Francisco gives him the best chance for a ring. But that's the beauty of Free Agency in he gets to decide ultimately where he belongs.
The part so many seem to be missing.BA belongs in SF and I hope they work it out.

But he's not a free agent.
If Aiyuk wants the benefits of free agency (pick your destination and name your price), he needs to play out his current contract like everyone else. Teams are more likely to meet the cost money-wise when they aren’t forced to give up draft capital or players on top of that. If you want to stay then find a number that makes sense. The part so many seem to be missing.BA belongs in SF and I hope they work it out.

They will re-sign Purdy. SF is going to roll a ton of cap room over from this season to next, which is how they are planning on managing that situation. They'll still need to make some tough choices and let some pro bowl caliber players go, however (both their starting CBs, probably).Steelers have $89M space next year, SF is -$10M. I dont think any of this is about the player, its about the roster in SF. Purdy is going to get a $50M raise(does SF resign him?). IDK how you make all that work.
Side note: Steelers will be bucking up for a QB next year as well, whoever that may be.
Also, CLEV is -$84 and NOLA is -$106M for next year![]()

Does it even matter if he can sign a new contract today and choose to be disgruntled with it a year from now? ... straight outta the TO handbook, right? No idea who these guys are, but apparently they're at the same $$ number, but it's the years that is keeping them apart. https://x.com/49erssportstalk/status/1823715912551424065
Which I find interesting, because you'd think the player would want the shorter deal to hit FA sooner when the salaries have all gone up again.
They definitely can, particularly if they give them large signing bonuses which will spread their cap hits out over the life of the contract. They can make sure the worst of Purdy's salary doesn't hit the cap until 3-4 years from now (for example, Hurts signed his contract extension last year and only has cap hits of $13m and $21m this year and next). They will re-sign Purdy. Is it realistic for them to be able to sign all three of Aiyuk, Trent Williams and Purdy?
I believe this is the crux of why the 49ers are playing a little bit of hardball here. If they just caved to every player who asked for an extension, they become an easy Mark for literally every player on the team.Does it even matter if he can sign a new contract today and choose to be disgruntled with it a year from now? ... straight outta the TO handbook, right? No idea who these guys are, but apparently they're at the same $$ number, but it's the years that is keeping them apart. https://x.com/49erssportstalk/status/1823715912551424065

we dont know the outcome yet, so its TBD how they handled it IMO. And even if he goes to Pitts, and SF gets a couple picks, we still wont know until those picks are made. Could be for a better WR than Aiyuk and a RB that takes over for McCaffery. And Aiyuk could stay and get his $ and SF has to release someone next offseason they dont want to and Steelers get Tee Higgins next year. I see a lot of people saying the 49ers have handled this terribly… I continue to disagree with that assertion for this reason and others I’ve previously stated.
o/U on +4 pages before there’s actual news?yawn
Nothing has changed same ole same ole.

The fact that it’s mid-August and they’re staring down the prospect of losing their best route-running WR (arguably best receiver since Deebo is a “wideback”) would make a trade for picks disastrous at this point.we dont know the outcome yet, so its TBD how they handled it IMO. Guess I should say if he is traded, it would hurt SF THIS YEAR, no picks or some mid level WR would really help them in 2024.
It’s a good question. Likely has to do with not having cap space for a $30M receiver this late in the summer.Would be incredible if Buffalo or KC swooped in out of nowhere and traded for Aiyuk. Both teams could certainly use him. Why are they not players in this saga?
Right, but seems like one of those “get the player then figure out how to manipulate the cap later” kind of situations. I mean, Aiyuk is right there for the taking and would be a massive boon to a team like KC or Buffalo. It’s a good question. Also, again, a lot has to do with what the team can offer the 49ers.
They need receiver, or potentially high picks. I’m sure PIT or especially NEP’s picks interested the 49ers a lot. I’m skeptical the Bills or Chiefs picks are anywhere near as appealing.
Glad I took the over. This just in from NFL Network....
