WR Calvin Ridley, TEN (3 Viewers)

The problem with Ridley is there isn’t a lot of room for his value to increase. He probably makes the most sense for a contending team, but then he eats a roster spot this year. If you’re a rebuilder, do you really want a 29 year old (when he’s able to return) WR?  Even if he comes back without missing a beat, you still have the mental issues and gambling killing any value.  I can’t see him ever being worth more than a mid 2nd in the most optimistic situation.

I think he's ideal for a team a year away and why would his gambling kill his future value?

It’s an addiction for some. If one is at the point where one is putting their career & millions from dollars in jeopardy by gambling, that’s what I’d describe as a “problem gambler”. 

The risk of Ridley breaking the gambling rules again is probably around 50/50. His statements following the incident where he didn’t really show contrition give me a bad feeling about his chances.

Last I remember, gambling can be quite a problem.  I stand by my assertion that his value will not rebound.  If you want to hang onto him in the event you think he can help your line up, go for it.  You're not going to get much in a trade.

Well, I believe it was $1500 on 1 game his team was playing!  Yeah, I think he could have a problem, but he has the money and resources to get help.  I do believe he will return and be worthy but maybe not as a Fantasy WR1 as he previously was in Atlanta.  I don't see him staying in ATL with them rebuilding and looking at Cap issues. Where does he land?  No clue but Clev and NEP could use him if he has the support system to stay "clean".  

For the record....  I am holding him so I might be biased, but I think his physical skill will remain / return depending where he ends up and how good the support system is in his new environment.

I don't think he was ever a WR1 and didn't do as well without Julio Jones in the lineup.   I'm not looking up the stats, so I could be wrong.  He was a strong WR2 for the Falcons at one time, but that ship, if not sailed, is certainly in port somewhere.   Gambling on games is a no no, but we don't even know if he wants to play again.  After all, he quit on his team last year and I'm not saying it was without good reason.

Yeah, that one isn’t accurate. He was fine without JJ. Better than fine. I had him that year in redraft and he was a monster.

But his comeback will be 3 years removed from that season. IMO the truth of Ridley is likely somewhere between your optimism and the pessimism of others. 

If someone wants to spend a 19th round pick on him I see no problem with it. But expecting FF WR1 numbers, or longevity out of him may not be realistic. And there is a greater than zero chance of relapse for either the mental health or gambling issues.

It might not be the biggest concern,  but it’s a concern.

He had a big year in 2020 with Jones missing almost half the year, so I stand corrected and I did say I didn't look up the stats.. Before and after 2020 he hasn't put up a 1000 yards and averaged 53 receptions for those 3 years, but 63 not counting last year.  TDs are always speculative.  Having been removed for at least two years, one has to have doubt about his value going forward.

What is Calvin Ridley's value going forward? I have him in a contract league for two more seasons after this. I can't figure if I should be trying to work him into deals to offload his salary or hold him. I have him at $29 out of $200. Cutting him would cost me $10/yr against my cap.

It's so hard to tell what he is going to be like after a 2 year layoff from the NFL. He definitely has a ton of talent and could be worth hanging on to but if you need the salary cap space then it might be worth it to cut him.

No sorry for misunderstanding, he can return for the opener which does in fact put him more along the lines of 1.5 seasons and I had mentioned that because some people keep running with comments like this below. And it's not splitting hairs to me that he played all the way through end of week 7 and had a full training camp. That's not remotely the same thing to me as being away from the game for 2 full years.

In terms of his perceived value I think a lot of that depends on league format, roster size etc. FFPC is what I mainly play and in that format his value is probably lower then your normal league because you only have to start 2 WR's and most of all because roster size is small for the wasted roster spot.

I would say that in theory his value should increase as each week passes.

In terms of what I think he'll do when he returns. I don't think the layoff will impact him nor do I have one iota of concern he does not return. But I'll be shocked if he's still a Falcon and where he plays is going to go a long way towards his value. He'll also be 29 so no matter what he does his age is going to make him likely to be an annually declining trade asset. But I think in terms of his performance he still has 2 if not 3 prime or close to prime years left, whether he's more WR1 then WR2 depends where he's playing.

29? Damn. Feel like he was a rookie 3 years ago.
 
I am carrying this guy in Dynasty, it sucks cause I can’t IR him due to the suspension. I tried to get a 2023 2nd for him during the off season. No go. I might try that again and see what happens. Like FFPC, RTS has 20 man rosters that cut down to 16 in the off-season.

I also didn’t realize that he was that old. Thanks Meno!

I have him in one FFPC superflex league where I finished second last year and should contend for the title this year, so I could really use the roster spot. I just posted on the board Ridley for a 2nd, first offer gets him. We’ll see what happens.

Correct, he will be 29 December of 2023.
 

Jaguars acquired Calvin Ridley from the Falcons for two future conditional draft selections.​

The structure of the trade is convoluted based on when Ridley is able to play. Ian Rapoport reports that Ridley will fetch either a fifth- or sixth-round pick in 2023 depending on when he is reinstated to the league. Jacksonville will also send a 2024 second-, third-, or fourth-round pick to Atlanta depending on if he makes the team, reaches a play-time threshold, or is signed to a long-term extension. Ridley, who is suspended for the season, will not suit up for the Jaguars this year. Still, this is a significant investment by the Jaguars, who have not managed to come up with much of a non-Christian Kirk receiving corps around Trevor Lawrence yet. Ridley figures to be a major solution for them if he can be reinstated in 2023.

Does Calvin Rose have to apply for reinstatement or is it guaranteed he's back next year? Seems like a sell high while people are thinking about him again, excited, and forgetting that Mariota has a better QB rating than Sunshine.
 
Seems like many are thinking that Ridley will return to the alpha WR he was before he stepped away. Clearly he’s got the talent but that’s a lofty expectation, which I’m going to manage if I land him in FAAB. Someone will surely outbid me though.

I keep trying to find an answer to this and can't find a thing. All I can say is it does not have to do with post high school stuff, not like they sat out a year or went down some oddball juco/transfer route. They were old high school seniors.

I’m sure this was probably answered on like page 2, but yeah, he sat out the last third of his senior year bc he was a 20 y.o. hs player. Age restriction was 19 y 9 m.
 
Zay Jones...Christian Kirk......Calvin Ridley.....Travis Etienne....and Trevor figuring things out.
Jags could dominate The AFC South for the foreseeable future.
