Speaking Wednesday, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said he hoped to avoid using the franchise tag on impending free agent Davante Adams.

“We’d like to come to a long-term deal that works for both sides,” Gutekunst said. “A lot of things have to happen before we get to that point. ... We try to be respectful. I had a very good conversation with ‘Tae’ before he left about all that stuff and again, he’s a unique player, unique person, and we’d certainly like to make him a long-term contract offer that works for both sides.” General managers are not in the business of admitting they plan to use the franchise tag, though this does go beyond the typical denial. Gutekunst, of course, did not actually pledge to avoid the tag. It is probably still the most likely outcome ahead of a potential long-term deal. As of Tuesday, there had reportedly been "no discussions" between the sides.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky expects the Packers to franchise tag Davante Adams.

Tagging Adams would give the Packers until July to work out a long-term deal. The Packers and Adams are in a holding pattern without knowing if they’ll have Aaron Rodgers on their roster. Adams is on his second contract, which is rarely tagged, and Green Bay hasn’t used the franchise tag since 2010. The Packers haven’t been in discussions since the start of last season with Adams, who’s looking to become the league’s highest paid receiver.

Packers assigned the franchise tag to WR Davante Adams.

With Aaron Rodgers agreeing to come back to the Packers for 2022 on a renegotiated contract, using the tag on Adams was a no-brainer to keep him in the fold for another run at a Super Bowl. Rodgers will likely be going year-to-year from here on out, but the Packers will now have until July 15 to hammer out a multi-year pact with Adams. If one doesn't come together, 29-year-old Adams will get a fully guaranteed $18.419 million on the franchise tag. Adams was the top free agent set to hit the open market next week.

Reports are surfacing that Devante Adams will not play in 2022 under the Franchise Tag!!

Star receiver Davante Adams informed the Green Bay Packers that he will not play on the franchise tag in 2022, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

Green Bay placed the $20.145 million tag on Adams ahead of the March 8 deadline after the two sides could not agree to terms on a long-term deal. Rapoport and Pelissero added Monday that the sides are still far apart on a contract extension.

Adams and the Packers have until July 15 to strike a deal or else the receiver will enter the 2022 campaign on the franchise tag.

I assume they will work out a contract in lieu of the tag, but the Leveon Bell decision to sit out rather than playing under the franchise tag should have been a defining lesson for all players that it is not in their best interest to do that. If Adams sat out 2022, he would never make up the money he would lose.

 
I don't think they ever thought he would play under the tag.  It was a tool to make sure they had time to figure out Rodgers and some other contracts and then either get him under a longer term contract or work a trade for him and get something for him rather than just comp picks.

He is also (30 in December) so he doesn't have many "prime" earning years left...gotta believe with Rodgers back they figure out a way to keep Adams as they are in more of a win now mode.

Yes and No, let's walk thru what Adams has experienced and I think it's highly unfair they can franchise tag him at this point. I'll explain why I feel that way. 

Adams is a 2nd rd pick way back in 2014, some folks might think he is coming off a rookie deal but in fact this guy has put in quite a number of years in the NFL. 

-He signed a 4yr/$58M deal in his 2nd contract with Green Bay, he honored that contract until it expired in 2021. 

Lev Bell, really? I think that's a huge leap here and I understand your POV but he can also not sit out but still work an injury or do what he must mentally to navigate the ship until he can enter free agency even taking $20M and trying to avoid major injury. That's what is unfair. 

He should be getting a good lucrative fairly long term deal. I think 3-4 years for a WR that has logged 8 already is fair. His market value is $25M a season according to Spotrac, some fo that is partly due to an incredible QB that targets the heck out of him because you can't trust another receiver anywhere on the roster but that's partly what brings us to here. 

Would Adams sign a 4 yr/$100M deal, is that outrageous money? If that is what the market will likely offer Adams if he were allowed to leave, seems like minimum he should be looking at a $60-$75M deal over 3-4 years with a juicy signing bonus, that's what he wants, some guarantees.

You're not wrong.  

But I also think it's pretty different.  I think you'd agree RB's are usually seen as replaceable.  Conner stepped in and proved the Steelers right.  And maybe to some extent they were lucky he was as good as he was that season.

Adams is a generational talent at receiver.  They have garbage for receivers behind him.  They paid Rodgers insane money to try to make a few more runs at the super bowl now.  They cannot afford to have Adams sit out.  Because of that, it feels like Adams has a lot more leverage than Bell ever did.  

All of that said, if the Packers are willing to sabotage the season and not pay the man--I'd agree sitting out and losing that kind of money is unwise.

 
Raiders acquired WR Davante Adams from the Packers in exchange for two 2022 draft picks. 

One of the picks is the Raiders' first-rounder. As part of the deal, franchise-tagged Adams is signing a new five-year, $141.25 million contract, making him the highest-paid wideout in the league. That is an eye-popping average-annual value of $28.25 million. Long-term talks did not seem to be going particularly well between the Packers and Adams, but no one was really considering the possibility of a trade after Aaron Rodgers decided to return to Green Bay. He is now losing the player he called the best receiver he has ever had. In Adams' wake in Green Bay are Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers. As for Adams' fit in Vegas, it is a massive quarterback downgrade, but Derek Carr and Josh McDaniels are going to understand the assignment: Get Adams the ball. Carr is also best at the same levels of the field as Adams, though he does not have Rodgers' finesse with getting the ball into tight spaces. Adams remains a clear-cut top-five WR1, but there will be a hit in production. Hunter Renfrow is the biggest fantasy loser, while it's also not great news for Darren Waller's ceiling.

I'll be very curious to hear GB's logic behind this trade. Because at first blush this doesn't make much sense. All the factors @jm192 cites above for why neither Adams nor the Packers had a ton of leverage should also mean that they both had a strong incentive to get a deal done. Now that they've made this trade, Adams is getting the long-term deal he wanted (though with a lesser chance of winning a SB), but unless those two draft picks turn into Justin Jefferson and JaMarr Chase, it's hard to imagine GB coming out of this in a better position, especially in the short-term.

tis what happens when the QB hamstrings the team with a mega-sized deal which soaks up all the cash and cap room

good thing it wasn't all about his share of the money for Rodgers

 
The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reports the Packers were "willing to pay Davante Adams as much or more than the Raiders," and that his decision "came down to him wanting out and to play with Derek Carr, his college quarterback."

Alrighty then. It is a little hard to believe that Adams would choose the Raiders over the Packers if the money was truly equal, but Adams indeed had unbelievable chemistry with Carr before Rodgers. Perhaps he was simply over the drama in Green Bay. It's also possible this is a coordinated leak from the Packers, who certainly never gave off the vibe they were ready to give Adams what he wanted. Whatever it was, he is gone. As much as Adams might like Carr, it's a severe downgrade, while Adams' target competition is upgrading. Rather than a no-brainer top 2-3 fantasy wideout, Adams is now more top 6-7.

Davante Adams' agent confirmed that the Packers were offering more money than the Raiders, but that it was Adams' "lifelong dream" to play for the Raiders. 

It was assumed in some quarters that the initial leaks that Green Bay was offering more money than Vegas was Packers damage control, but it is harder to refute when the player's agent confirms it. Adams' reasons for leaving Green Bay will probably be a topic of local obsession for months to come, but it really could be as simple as wanting to play for his childhood rooting interest with his college quarterback Derek Carr. In barely-noticed comments from last summer, Adams said it would be a "dream" to play with Carr. To the Packers' horror, it has come true.

Nothing the Packers do makes any sense.  

You spend a 1st round pick on a QB--when you needed more pass catchers.  

You spend a 2nd round pick on a RB--when you have an electric one in Aaron Jones--and you need more pass catchers.  

You spend the next 2 years STILL not addressing the lack of pass catchers beyond Adams so you can incentivize your MVP QB to stay.  

You then re-sign said MVP QB for 50 million a year--only to trade away the single good receiver you had.  

Everything you've done for the last 2 years signals looking to the future.  And then you go and drop 50 million a year on your 38 year old MVP caliber QB--signaling you're going to try to make a few more runs at it all.  

 
Well I am absolutely nothing short of giddy over him saying FU to GB and Rodgers. I don't care if it wasn't really like that, I'm going to enjoy it.

But he is never going to get the targets he got from Rodgers. I don't even mean that as an indictment of Carr on any level. I'm sure they will do really well and Adams is still a beast, if not the best WR in the league. But that connection was almost obsessive between Rodgers and Adams.

As such I am knocking Adams down 10 franchise points in my system. I had him at 40. Still a WR1 but more on the WR2 fringe there. As always I will be curious to see how ADP shapes out this offseason. 

 
The Athletic's Tashan Reed reports that Davante Adams has "almost exclusively lined up outside and has worked from the left and right sides of the field."

Well, that's how you get Hunter Renfrow on the field, right? That's the price. Per Sports Info Solutions' charting, Adams drew 106 targets in the slot and 70 out wide last year. This isn't something that should stop him from being drafted early, but it is a piece of the puzzle to consider as you stack him up against other WR1s. He may see a reduction in slot targets, and those have tended to be quite high value for him.

Davante Adams caught 10-of-17 targets for 141 yards and one touchdown in the Raiders' Week 1 loss to the Chargers.​


Adams' 17 targets easily paced the team, as he was targeted on 46% of Derek Carr's 37 pass attempts. Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow each saw six looks, tied for second on the team. With the Chargers missing top CB J.C. Jackson to injury, Carr was just throwing it up to Adams relentlessly, even if he was covered. Naturally, Carr threw three picks forcing the ball to his wideouts. Adams figures to again be right at the top of the league in targets this season. He gets a cake date with the Cardinals in Week 2 where Adams will again be a top-three WR1.

Davante Adams caught 5-of-10 targets for 36 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders' Week 3 loss to the Titans. He lost four yards on his only carry.​


The Titans were able to settle into blanket coverage on Adams for most of the day. Carr squeezed a pass through double coverage to Adams on a five-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, but most of Adams' day was spent running sprints against two defenders. It seems teams are simply content to dedicate additional attention to Adams until Carr and the Raiders show they can connect elsewhere. Adams will look to get back on track in a Week 4 divisional showdown against the Broncos in Las Vegas.
