WR Ja'Marr Chase, CIN (1 Viewer)

There's no way I'm excusing it, but I will say Jalen Ramsey is known for bringing out the worst in people. Remember AJ Green punching him? And AJ was pretty classy.

Tonight I picture Jalen Ramsey and Ja'Marr Chase solemnly clasping each other's hand as little children in a cold, wooden church while they listen to John Winthrop as he tells them at the age of seven that God has endowed them both with extraordinary gifts to be revered in this life but then met with eternal damnation and cruelty just because God wills it so to enjoy the full range of his creation.

And I smile to myself. Pretty deeply, actually.

Oh, shining city upon a hill, disclose to us our fates and let us walk upon this earth as bylines in support of depravity and thoughtless cruelty against those fated in the way these two are.

Ramsey should get an apology from the league for the ejection and Chase should get suspended.
I doubt Ramsey gets an apology, as being spit on still doesn't excuse punches, but I'm fully expecting Chase to get suspended.
Have to disagree, being spit on demands a punch.
I think the point is, PENALTY-wise, one doesn't excuse the other. They both should have been ejected, including Ramsey. So Ramsey's ejection was not wrong, it was Chase's non-call that was wrong. Which happens all the time.

Being spit on is considered an assault.
Being spit on is nasty as F!
Chase 100% deserves a fine and 1 game suspension!
Tackling someone is also considered assault, so I wonder how that works legally. Things that elsewhere would be an assault are mundane. But things that aren't part of the game, that elsewhere would be assault? I guess there are fights all the time though, which are not part of the game.

The only issue I have with the whole play was that Chase was wearing a helmet. Spitting on someone is despicable.

As a Chase dynasty owner I will say he is an idiot for spitting.

He deserves the suspension. Will he learn a lesson - doubtful.

My biggest frustration with players is when they disrespect the game and other players. Seems some never learn.

I'm in your position and like I said, we've long eaten lunch in separate cafeterias.

Between this and the whole Cowboys Eagles spit game; I hope the league does something this offseason. If they deem it necessary to have long drawn out meetings that result in new rules, suspensions, and huge monetary fines for TD celebrations where someone does finger guns.... there damn well better be a new black and white standardized long suspension term and GIANT fine for any player spitting on or at another player on the field. It's literally a criminal offense of assault and potentially battery that will get you arrested and potentially jailed. The league punishment should be so bad no one even considers doing it. Legitimate scumbag behavior.

One game is a joke of a suspension and I'd be calling the police and pressing charges if I was a player who got spit on. And I'd only be pressing charges to keep myself from making a worse retaliation that could potentially put my career/life at risk.

I played in a D league game where our power forward was being pushed hard every foul, then he'd get his foot stomped on right when a free throw was shot so the refs didn't see. One time this led to squaring up but no punches. He got slapped across the face as he shot a jumper and that led to squaring up and no punches.
All game, dirty rough mean stuff
Late he got thrown to the ground, benches cleared, and as happens he was kinda pushed out of the way by assistant coach and we all were more in the scrum.
Next layup, thrown to the ground and he got up and was gonna punch, gonna punch, then spit.

He'd say after what was I gonna do? They kick us out of the league if we throw a punch. Him saying that surprised me and seemed valid. He took sooo much dirt and kept his head on and took more and kept his cool and there wasn't one T.

For the next twenty-five years, I've wondered if that's why they spit in the NFL.

I think most people exaggerate what's tolerable and what's being a good boy as if they write after school specials for a living.

I wanna know what Ramsey said and did because Chase isn't exactly known for this.

I won't be ok with it. Spitting is gross. I might understand though

There's gotta be more. What led to it all?
I wish we could get appeal hearing transcripts

It was a build up. They had been going at it all game long. Was the spit after or before the Ramsey punch?

He punched after.

Honestly, this is going to sound ridiculous, but when I saw the video it didn't really look like he spit at Ramsey. Didn't go right at him. Seemed to just go to the ground. That said, I'm sure he meant disrespect by it, hit him or not.

After.

The play before, they got into a shoving match and both got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

After the next play, they got into a little again and that's when Chase spit. Ramsey's reaction to the spit was to hit him in the facemask.

Ramsey was ejected because they had each received their first penalty towards ejection on the play before. But the referees didn't see the spit.

Chase was clearly frustrated because the Steelers made it a point to take him out of the game. He had only 2 catches until getting his 3rd late in the 4th quarter. And Ramsey was a key reason why Chase was nonexistent on Sunday.

I haven't seen the video, but the direction of the spit is interesting. The Eagles DT incident has been mentioned as precedence. I recall Dax spitting in the general direction first, but no suspension.

I don't understand why spitting is considered such an utterly despicable thing. Yeah it's gross. If I were spat on it would be very gross and annoying. But it would most certainly not make me want to attack the offender.

And no this is not me as a Bengals fan defending Chase. I am very disappointed in what he did. But mainly because of how bad of a thing it is considered to be, and that he knew that when he did it.

I remember people with AIDS spitting and a whole huge deal like forty years ago. I understood and ...not really sure nowadays.

Clearly Hawk Tua fans disagree

Wait until you get spit on. You'll think A LOT differently about it.

Ya never know who has AIDS n what not in saliva..
Spit on a cop you'll get charged with assault! If you have AIDS,it's assault deadly weapon!!!!!
If Chase spit on him,100% should be suspended 1 game.
Only ones who disagree are his owners!

I got furious the same guy throws a keystone can on my lawn everyday for months. Many were "relax it's littering."

Yeah after my OG comment I realized I have a visceral reaction to it that probably isn't universal. My inner dialogue eventually went to "I'd rather someone squares up and tries to punch me in the face than spit on me" and was enough to trigger me to think my line of thinking isn't exactly following standard logic. Unfortunately, more than one story in my life involving people spitting on others that led me to this and I know it's not something that is changing in me. Hence my "I'd file a police report" comment; because my previous reactions to it have led to the only real legal issues I've had in my life. And I'm too old for that nonsense anymore. I do think it's even worse in professional sports and that, especially considering how other things are punished in this league, that it should be more than a single game suspension along with an exorbitantly high fine.

Someone could probably draw some kind of "toxic masculinity" line here; but to me spitting on someone is the pinnacle of ignorance and cowardliness. For my money, if you take such umbrage with someone that you need to confront them you have two routes to take; verbal or physical. Someone too stupid to verbally confront someone, and too weak or yellow to challenge them physically resorts to spitting. It's just the lowest of the low to me.

For some levity, if you remember The Player Haters Ball sketch from Chapelle show, my take on spitters would be "I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you." lol

Spitting is crappy, and I agree with Chase being suspended, and his defense is mind-numbingly idiotic. but this is not remotely true. Technically, you can't "get AIDS" from anything. AIDS is an advanced stage of HIV. You can't get HIV through saliva.

Moved in. Cleaned yard. Removed bushes. Prior owner didn't care which may be true since I picked up like a garbage bag full and put it in this guy's yard to get him to stop

I always heard that you could get diseases including AIDS (or, okay, HIV, I didn't know that was different) that way. I had never heard otherwise, that is news to me. But I don't really follow or care about medical stuff much. I thought that was the rationale for it being considered assault?

Sorry, I didn’t get why he did it from your response. I take it that he was your neighbor. Maybe you don’t know what motivated him to throw a beer can in your yard everyday? I would have had a conversation with him.

I thought it looked pretty clear that it would have hit Ramsey. But not like 100% since there can be illusions with perspective sometimes. But it seemed almost impossible for it to not have hit him.

I always heard that you could get diseases including AIDS (or, okay, HIV, I didn't know that was different) that way. I had never heard otherwise, that is news to me. But I don't really follow or care about medical stuff much. I thought that was the rationale for it being considered assault?
Just looked it up and it sounds like that's true, cannot be transmitted through being spat on. In that case I have no idea why it's considered assault. Unless throwing a paper straw wrapper at someone is also assault.

ETA: Well maybe other diseases could be, though?

Wait until you get spit on. You'll think A LOT differently about it.

Ya never know who has AIDS n what not in saliva..
Spit on a cop you'll get charged with assault! If you have AIDS,it's assault deadly weapon!!!!!
If Chase spit on him,100% should be suspended 1 game.

True, but…We know what he meant.
yes and it was a dumb comment
How is it dumb? You don’t mind if someone was HIV positive spitting on you?
WTF are we talking about in here? This is getting ridiculous. I don't want anyone spitting on me but it is not because I am afraid of getting aids or whatever else footballdaz thinks you will get

Me either. I deleted my comment because this is getting ridiculous. Spitting on someone does deserve a butt whoopin’ however.

To switch directions, and get back on track, what do we think of Tee Higgins without Chase for a week? Will Flacco force feed him to the extent he has Chase (or just more than he had with Chase?) and does that make Higgins a WR1 for fantasy against NE in another likely chase script?

One concern with Higgins is that Gonzo shadows him.

I am sorry but as someone in healthcare, I have to clear this up. You cannot get someone’s disease from being spit on. You may however get someone’s viral cold but not a disease that’s permanent.

I don't know if that's a concern. Gonzalez certainly didn't matter against Drake London or Emeka Egbuka the last couple weeks, and its not like those teams had other weapons you needed to focus on.
