WR Jermaine Burton, CIN (1 Viewer)

Really hope the kid can figure things out.

Have a feeling it is going to be elsewhere if he does though.

Here’s what we know about the NFL: if there’s enough talent, teams are willing to overlook the crazy/immature.

We’ll likely find out soon enough where the Bengals & other teams have Burton on that chart.

Maybe we get a 7th for him. Dead cap is only 250k/yr if he is cut post June 1. Stinks to be looking this stuff up but it does save $1m of cap for 3 years

Bengals' Jermaine Burton allegedly involved in domestic dispute

CINCINNATI -- Bengals wide receiver Jermaine Burton was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute where he choked and hit his ex-girlfriend, according to an incident report filed by police and obtained by ESPN on Thursday.

On Dec. 30, Burton allegedly broke into the home of a woman he was seeing hours after the two had been out drinking at 1 a.m., according to an emergency call made to Cincinnati police at 8 a.m.

The woman, 19, told police that Burton choked her in the hallway of her apartment complex. She also said Burton broke into her residence, grabbed a knife from her dishwasher, held it to his own neck and threatened to kill himself. She told police that Burton then broke her phone and left.

According to the police incident report, obtained by ESPN through an open records request, the woman declined to file charges. Burton's agent did not respond to an attempt by ESPN for a comment.

In the call to the police dispatcher, the woman told officers that it was not an isolated incident.

"This is the second time he's broken my phone in the past month," the woman said. "He broke my phone and hit me and he left."

Burton, a rookie, did not travel with the team to its regular-season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers because of the coach's decision, which coach Zac Taylor confirmed after the game.

"We will continue to evaluate as we gather additional details and will have no further comment at this time," the Bengals said in a statement given to ESPN on Thursday.

The woman told police they had been seeing each other since September. However, she alleged Burton had been "pretty abusive." In her call to police, she said the incident on Dec. 30 resulted from her refusing to "show him an old Tweet."

She also told police that on Dec. 21, the two were drinking alcohol at his residence when Burton allegedly pushed her down a set of stairs. The police were not notified at the time but filed a separate incident in which Burton threatened self-harm.

Burton was a third-round pick out of Alabama. Even before the Bengals drafted him, there were questions about Burton's conduct. In 2022, a video posted to social media showed Burton striking a woman in the head as she stormed the field following Tennessee's win over Alabama.

"It was something that we talked about with him just to hear what he had to say about it," Taylor said last April. "We did our research on all these guys that we've talked to and made sure we're aware of every incident they've been a part of."

The latest incident comes after Burton's previous landlord filed an eviction notice and civil lawsuit against him on Dec. 23 for lack of payment. The lawsuit also seeks $10,000 for damages "beyond ordinary wear and tear."

Burton is coming off a disappointing rookie season. Despite being featured in the gameplan in the days leading up to the game, he was a healthy scratch for a Week 9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders after missing a walkthrough before the game, sources told ESPN at the time.

While he eventually became the team's starting kick returner, his offensive snaps dwindled. In 14 games this season, he finished with four catches for 107 receiving yards.

man, I wasted a 2nd on him. I was hoping that he'd mature up but nope. Chances are that he will be reinstated by the nfl (assuming he gets suspended and/or cut) I hope he gets the help he needs though.

holy predictable progression Batman!

this should be the end. What an idiot.

Welp, glad I traded him.
Bengals Director of Player Personnel said “he’s done nothing” when asked if Jermaine Burton deserves a roster spot next season.
Brutal but not surprising. Burton was drafted No. 80 overall by the Bengals last season as a high-risk, high-reward dart throw. The talented rookie out of Alabama caught just four passes for 107 scoreless yards in 2024 and was held out of the team’s season-finale against the Steelers due to a coach’s decision. He was already considered to be on the roster bubble before this quote from Tobin, which came at the Senior Bowl, but this seems to add another layer to his uncertain future with the organization. Tobin went on to point out that the Bengals knew they “were taking a risk” when they drafted Burton and added that they thought they “could help him through some of the challenges he’s had in the past” but also said Burton is “going to have to start doing something quickly.”
😬

I feel like that's a trap. I don't know who it was and it was several years ago but I remember there being a similar narrative around 2 players with the same agent and they didn't resign with the same team (or maybe they did, my minds not a steel trap anymore) I think if he has a competitive agent they'll go where the money is and that's free agency. Now maybe his ultimate goal is a sb and he thinks the Bengals can get there so he rather take less money to resign than get more money to play for a team that's not as likely to get to the big game.

If Higgins leaves Cincy needs to bring in another quality WR (and/or TE) because they would be one Chase injury away from being in a very bad spot with what they currently have and that includes if Gesicki resigns.

Bump Iosivas?
If they bring back Gesicki he’s the one who goes off when Tee is out.
I’d probably bump Yoshi a bit if Higgins goes to greener pastures.
Other then TD's he was actually a good amount worse in the games Tee was not* playing.

*had to edit that comment just now above because I had indicated he was worse in the games Tee played, meant the opposite. His production, again other then TD's, dropped in half when Tee was actually out.

And put me down as saying I'll be shocked if Tee returns. Chase is now going to surpass Jefferson's deal and Tee's in a much better bargaining position then Aiyuk was when he cleared over $30M. I anticipate will run them $70M annually to keep both of them. I know some teams like the Eagles pay two WR's and a QB but they also got ahead of those contracts, saved some money not waiting until they hit FA or were on last year of their deals plus they structured those contracts in a Mike Brown is not going to do.
