WR Justin Jefferson, MIN (1 Viewer)

Call me crazy, but I'm a bit frustrated. Yes, he is a beast, but when Capt Kirk is slinging TD's, it's a little disappointing when the dominant WR and a top-2 redraft pick isn't on the receiving end of any of them. Love the guy...one of, if not the, most talented WR in the league...but gotta say that I'm starting to get Andre Johnson vibes from him.
He fumbled an inch away from a TD

This may be part of why Jefferson tried to extend the ball over the goal line which led to a turnover when it was fumbled out of the end zone.

There has been comments from the coach and Cousins telling Jefferson to take that risk so that they dont have to run red zone offense and possibly settle for 3.

When in my view it is better to protect the ball and take 3 chances to punch it in afterwards.

Its a recurring emphasis. Cousins praising Addison for scoring and being glad they didnt have to run red zone offense from the same game, which almost seems like a passive agressive comment criticisizing JJ for not doing this in this context. Intentional or not.

Nevermind that Jefferson is getting much more defensive attention which makes crossing the goal line more difficult than it is for Addison who is running free in no small part because of the defensive attention not being on him as much as Jefferson.

There may be something to your observation and the way Jefferson wins, which is not the same as a player like Randy Moss, who is going to score because of the way they win. Jefferson wins more on technique gaining seperation, but defenders while not being able to stop the reception can still stop him from from extending the play too much after the catch.

Eta - why is Cousins and the head coach so afraid of red zone offense? Because their offensive line sucks.

With 114+ receiving yards Sunday, JJ would surpass Moss for second most yards in a players first four seasons while playing in 10 fewer games.

Lock, might double that against the panthers
They may triple team him at this point.
Its already been happening to some extent. 2 defenders bracketing with another over the top.

Thats why they traded for Hockenson last year, to take advantage of that. Adam Thielen wasnt doing enough to make teams pay for doing that I guess. Which is kind of weird considering the chemistry and timing Cousins already had with Thielen. I guess single coverage was enough to stop Thielen from doing that.

Now the Vikings have Addison as well who got many receptions vs the Chargers in part due to all the extea attention on Jefferson in that game.

Vikings WR Justin Jefferson caught 3-of-6 targets for 28 yards before leaving the game in the 4th quarter (hamstring) Week 5 against the Chiefs and did not return.

Jefferson pulled up lame following a route in the red zone in the fourth quarter and was checked out by the team doctors in the medical tent. He was quickly ruled questionable to return. Before departing, Jefferson was mostly bottled up by the heavy zone rates of Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said after Week 5's 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that it's too early to tell how the hamstring injury that wide receiver Justin Jefferson (hamstring) sustained in the contest may affect his availability. Jefferson was forced to watch Sunday's eventual defeat from the sidelines in the fourth quarter after coming up with a bit of a limp on a route. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year struggled with three catches on six targets for 28 yards before his departure. Jefferson's practice status is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal storylines heading into Week 6, and the 1-4 Vikings may not feel inclined to rush their franchise centerpiece back for next Sunday's divisional battle with the Chicago Bears. If Jefferson ultimately misses time, Kirk Cousins could exit QB1 territory while first-round rookie Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson figure to be funneled with targets in Minnesota's pass-happy offense. --Joseph Barbati - RotoBaller

To JJs credit he was being shadowed by L'Jarius Sneed. Dude has been consistently improving since 2021, and since last season has been a slept on top CB who doesn't get enough shine IMO. I think after Chris Jones, he's the next most important player on that defense.

They keep saying "they're not going to rush him back."

What I fear: MN keeps losing, maybe they deal Cousins...then there would REALLY be no reason to rush him back.

So what are Jefferson owners doing? If you are 1-4 or 2-3 have to seriously consider trading him. For what? How low are you willing to sell him?

I’m 4-1 and holding. Just hoping it’s not season ending.

Other question is what are Cousins owners doing? I’m one of those two.

Fellow Cousins/Jefferson stack owner in SuperFlex. I am quite concerned about the thought of Jefferson just shutting it down if the Vikings don’t win at least 2 of their next 4.

The seeking multiple opinions and protect him from himself talk was concerning and had me bracing for IR.

I definitely did not expect them to do it this fast. They had till Saturday to make this decision and most times teams will take it that far or till Friday at least. Leaves me feeling like this is not going to be just a 4 week IR stint. Vikings losing ways and JJ’s contract status don’t help but shutting him down this fast is alarming beyond just the 4 minimum.

Well, I had Kupp last year at the 2 pick and JJ this year at the 1, and I took them thinking they were mainly "safe" from serious injury risk. I guess in relative terms they're "safer" but no one is safe unfortunately

Not saying it won't happen, but I think teams shutting down players when out of the playoffs is a bit of a myth. Typically players play if they're healthy enough. To me, the biggest risk, as with any hamstring injury, is that it lingers and hampers performance. That IMO would probably be the team's rationale to shut him down more than the team's record.

ETA: just saw Faust's post from Schefter - Jefferson's own position from a contract standpoint is a different thing than the team shutting him down, and does make more sense.

JJ is trying to break every receiving record there ever was. He's not going to waste 8-9 games just because.

sure he will, if it gets him the money he wants (and deserves) and keeps him healthy. he's still a kitten

Doc Chao is estimating 6 weeks.

JJ owners can't catch a break with the ill timed week 13 bye.

I agree the talk of "shutting down" players is more myth then reality, especially a player chasing all time greatness. In general players want to play. Like the infamous orator Ray Lewis once said, 'you pay for me for Monday-Saturday. Sunday I give you for free".

But that bye week timing really bad because if he's got a 6 week'ish injury I think he either returns by week 11 or he won't. I see no way a player with a soft tissue injury misses 7 weeks and returns to the game before the bye so you can take out week 12. If he can only return for week 14, considering his contract status, I think it might be in play for him to not play the last 4 games, only 3 of which matter to us of course.

So for me I'm planning on a return by week 11 or he won't play again this season. If I was betting on it I'd say the last time Cousins threw to Jefferson was the last time that ever happens again.

Doc Chao is estimating 6 weeks.
If Dr. Chao says it, I'm probably inclined to believe it unfortunately. He's probably the one Twitter fantasy doctor who I listen to - seems to have a good pulse on the injuries.
Not to get off subject but he's the ONLY person I pay any heed to regarding injuries. For the life of me I don't see why people seek out all these Jesse Morse or rando internet docs when we got an almost 20 year actual NFL team doctor who is a practicing orthopedic surgeon dispensing injury info.

He's also an avid FF player, so he understands the implications from a fantasy perspective. But yes, we digress.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert believes Justin Jefferson (hamstring) “won’t feel rushed” to return from injured reserve.
Seifert said if Jefferson is not 100 percent healed by the end of his four-week stint on injured reserve, the star wideout could miss more time. That the Vikings’ seasons will likely be lost by then is another matter that could influence Jefferson’s return. ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested Tuesday that Jefferson might not return to the field if the Vikings’ season is lost by November. In the meantime, KJ Osborn and Jordan Addison will function as the team’s top receivers.

6-8 weeks if they keep losing. Easily.

Own zero shares.

The way this timeline is being talked about, it sounds less like a strain or a pull, and more like a tear. I realize those are all in the same family of injury, but yikes, worst case scenario.

Landing a super mega contract isn't "just because"

Yeah. As competitive as Jefferson is, he won't sit out just because. Must be more.

That's my concern. Often you hear that it's just a tweak or something and just needs a few weeks of rest, but nothing seems to be pointing that way. Ugh.

-Hey Adam, how many others should just stay home the rest of the season? This is where he jumps the shark and why I pretty much detest the mere site of him.
It's like when Newman hears "Keith Hernandez" in the next room, my blood starts to boil immediately

This whole thing is so bizarre. Guy tweaks his hamstring and now he might not play rest of the season? Something else going on here. Not saying hes not hurt but that hammy pull didnt look like he tore it or something.

I think this is more about the possibility of trading Cousins than it is the situation with JJ
