WR Michael Thomas, Free Agent (1 Viewer)

Michael Thomas (ankle) remained "limited" on Thursday.

Thomas appears on track to return against the Lions, but it can't be taken for granted until he gets in a full practice or we get word from coach Sean Payton that he's ready to go. It is doubtful that Thomas will be a game-time decision. We should have clarity by the time Friday's injury report is released. High-ankle sprains are amongst the most tricky injuries for wideouts to come back from, but Thomas will still immediately slot back in as a mid-range to low-end WR1. We need to see a game or two before jamming him back into the top five.

JMHO, the fact the Saints did not put him on IR (3 week minimum) is worth considering before assuming he's being rushed back. If they themselves were not sure if this was a 3-week minimum injury, is it obvious he's being rushed back? Not sure what the incentive would be to keep a player on the active roster if you don't expect him back < 3 weeks.
That's a very fair point. I had reminded myself of that at the time. But that was back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth it seems so long ago. Maybe his HAS is not so bad. I had one once in HS. After a month of sitting on the side during morning basketball practices, our PG and friend of mine called me out, suggesting I was either faking it or being soft. I took off my shoes and socks and showed him my foot that was still bright purple and yellow and brown bruising everywhere. Even 4 weeks later. He was just like damn ok. They're bad injuries. Anyway I hope you're right. Would love to put him back in my lineup.

Was there a 3-week IR last season? Have to admit I'm a little turned around on IR rules for 2020.
No 3wk IR, but when AJ wasn't put on the PUP the talk was he'd definitely be back before we 7 or the Bengals would have put him on it.

Not saying Michael Thomas won't play this weekend, just that teams keep players off that for a handful of reasons.

In this case, after the injury, reports surfaced that Thomas felt he could play.  After seeing what Kamara went through last year with the ankle, NO management doesn't want to screw around and put him out there below 100%, but they also don't want to piss of Thomas by putting him on the IR.  So, they do this and take it week-by-week.  Just my 2 cents.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Michael Thomas (ankle) isn’t a lock to return this week.

Thomas practiced on a limited basis the last two days. The Saints want to make sure he doesn’t have a setback with his high-ankle sprain, so the fact he’s trending well “doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to play.” Thomas looks headed for a questionable tag and his status will likely come down to a game time. Emmanuel Sanders and Tre’Quan Smith would get a boost if Thomas misses another week.

8 weeks, but they never put him on IR because they expected him back week 4 or 5

he literally took up a roster spot on the Bengals all year and never played

Right, I get it. Just saying having to commit to 3 week outage is far lower stakes than committing to 8 week unavailability.

Out for week 4, do they fire him up in Week 5 with the bye looming Week 6 or just hold him out and be ready for 7?  The saints offense needs him back in a big way so I think if he's on the right side of Q then they'll fire him up next week rather than wait...

i would agree.  in theory you leave him out to heal up through the bye but they need him back bad.  if hes cleared he will play.

Not a homer, but i'd be shocked if they roll him out week 5 when they have a bye the following week.
I agree with you. Complicating matters is that Drew Brees came back a week early from his thumb injury in 2019, the week before a bye. So there's no organizational philosophy about whether or not to return a player in a game before a bye week.

They could sure use a win. That may be a tiebreaker against the wisdom of waiting through the bye. I own him in two spots and in one I am in really good shape regardless, so I am benching him. This means he will play and get a standard 15 target game from Brees. Just a heads up.

Yeah the bolded is the thing. If they were humming along that's one thing. But one more loss and they are kind of on the outside looking in.

Needing to win might be the key here. Packers had the advantage of being able to sit Adams ahead of the bye, Saints might not be able to resist.

I’ll balance this. I have next to no one else so if he goes I’m starting him. Which means 3 targets 16 yards.

Michael Thomas (ankle) got in a "limited" practice on Thursday.

Thomas got in some "limited" practices last week before not suiting up against the Lions, but we are assuming this week will be different. Thomas has an extra day to get healthy with Saints/Chargers taking place on Monday evening. Even though he will be at risk of re-injury, Thomas will immediately belong back in the WR1 ranks.

Michael Thomas (ankle) was limited in practice Friday.

Thomas has been limited in back-to-back practices, making him trend towards a "questionable" final injury tag ahead of Week 5. We'll get the final practice report on Saturday with the Saints playing on Monday Night Football this week. Thomas would be a boom-bust WR1 if he's able to gut through his high-ankle sprain. Jared Cook was limited on Friday, too.

Dying on this one.  Pretty significant implication for the week if he’s playing or not. Most pundits believe he will play but if he doesn’t you might be ####ed based on what’s available. Who’s rolling the dice and what is your backup plan if any?

Zero backup plan. Rolling him out and praying.

I have Trequan to switch out in one league if needed, in another I am actually strong enough at my two WR spots and two flexes that I don't feel the need to risk it (Diontae, Metcalf, Evans and McLaurin). In two others I have no idea what I'm doing but have a couple late Sunday options to prolong my agony of choosing.

I have Kelley and Singletary who could go in for him at flex (no PPR). Not sure what I'll do, but I'll see where I stand and how likely he is to be a factor before I decide.

My worry is that Thomas is active, but is in a limited role, and then the Saints win big and he finishes with like 3-40 on about 20 snaps. I'm still going with him(only other option is Gage) but I have pretty low expectations.

In one league it’s AJ Brown in the Tuesday game as my only other option. Committed to starting Diggs and JJefferson and either MT/AJB

in second league I’m praying that if MT ruled out that Mike Williams (same game) or Corey Davis (Tuesday) can play

Davis is on the covid list. He's definitely not playing. FYI.

Have Trequan as well, but have Jeudy on my bench that I'd rather start.   Already starting Evans, Cooper and K. Allen, would really like Thomas in my flex.

Tuesday games in jeopardy due to more positive titans and Patriots tests and shutdown of facilities.

There go some lifelines

I'm just rolling the dice and keeping him in my lineup in one league. Only other options are Herndon or Dobbins. TE premium and Flacco might actually find his TE here today. But......I'm going MT. I have Gabriel Davis as something for a backup if the Titans Bills do play. I have one other league where I think I am benching him in a flex for Jefferson tonight.

Double dipping KC and now pairing Watkins with Hill. Had Edelman in over Thomas already. Feels like classic decoy if he suits up.

"Team discipline" reasons per James Palmer.

eta- Lifted from Saints site. "The change in game status is not injury related-team discipline."

Wait wut?

Per Schefter:

Saints’ WR Michael Thomas had an altercation with a teammate at practice this weekend, per league sources. Saints now disciplining Thomas by sitting him Monday night, when he was being listed as questionable with an ankle injury.

Regardless of the bad injury luck involved, one of the very worst first round picks ever in redraft. Half the season shot after a stupid accidental injury by his own teammate and now this. Useless.

Tom Pelissero
@TomPelissero · 2m

#Saints star WR Michael Thomas punched teammate Chauncey Gardner-Johnson during a fight in practice, per sources. That’s why Thomas was ruled out for Monday’s game against the #Chargers for what the club is calling team discipline.

He's the next Antonio Brown. Cares more about stats than winning, and is a complete idiot (which we have seen on Twitter already a few times).

oh come on now.  They couldn't have released this info before 1:00 today?  I'm stuck starting him now - guaranteed goose egg.

According to ESPN, Michael Thomas was designated as "OUT" because of an altercation with a teammate.
I am glad you clarified this because I had no idea what the article I read meant by "disciplinary reasons".  I am wondering if they are using this as an excuse to give him an extended rest since the Saints are on bye next week.
