WR Quentin Johnston, LAC (4 Viewers)

why would his field speed be higher than his drill speed?
Because most NFL players aren’t track stars and some don’t master the technique of running out of the blocks properly.
These one-off, point-in-time speeds are why many players drop in the drafts, as scouts are wedded to the metrics. Clearly Quentin didn't drop because the Chargers scouts saw considerable potential in him, but happens all too much.

is there any proof this guy is actually fast or is it just people believing he has worst 40 time technique ever
I answered your specific question. Guess you didn’t really care to know the answer. Good luck to you.

You didn't try very hard, did you? I Googled "Quentin Johnston speed" and this was the second article: Quentin Johnston runs sub-4.50 40-yard dash at TCU Pro Day

Wide Receiver Quentin Johnston ran a sub-4.50 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, posting an official time of 4.49, with some scouts timing him as fast as 4.46.

This was Johnston’s first time running the 40-yard, as the 6’3” 208 lbs receiver decided not to run the event at the NFL Combine, where he put up a 99th percentile result in the broad jump and a 95th percentile result in the vertical jump.

I Googled "Quentin Johnston speed mph" and this tweet was the first result:

Quentin Johnston clocked in at a max speed of 21.39 mph near the end of this playThere were only eight wide receivers in the NFL last year with a single play clocked faster than that (Campbell, Jackson, Watson, Waddle, Duvernay, Bateman, Atwell, Claypool), according to NGS.

He's clearly not interested in real answers to his questions and just looking to argue for whatever reason.

Johnston has reportedly “shined” since the start of training camp.Johnston has been one of Justin Herbert’s favorite targets since day one.Johnston was also reportedly running at a “different speed” compared to Keenan Allen during agility drills. The Chargers rookie WR is SPECIAL.(Via chargersxcountry/IG)

This dude excites me more, and more especially with that injury prone receiving corps. They are the only thing standing in his way, and I am not even sure that is going to matter as the season goes on if they stay healthy or not.

I’m not sure it will even take an injury to get him on the field a lot at the expense of Williams.

As a Chargers fan, that would surprise me a lot. I like Johnston, but if Williams is healthy, I fully expect him to be #2 on the team in targets behind Allen.

Got him at 1.19 in a 24-team 2-copy-of-each-player league. It's a 1QB league but lots of people took QBs early. I was surprised he was there so I moved in to get him.

If all players are healthy, I expect Allen to be #1 in targets, Williams to be #2, and Ekeler to be #3. That was the order of targets last season when the named players were healthy, and, furthermore, I expect Ekeler's targets to go down in 2024 (new OC, more/better WRs). Johnston would probably be #4, but we're probably talking 6 targets per game max if Allen, Williams, and Ekeler are healthy.

Agreed. This is why he is a great WR #4. If either one of those injury prone WR's gets hurt that changes to 8-10 targets, with big play potential, and red zone targets. Herbert has already shown great chemistry with him in camp. I hope Allen/Williams stay healthy atleast until the season starts because if not his value will sky rocket, but right now his value is awesome

Fair points - in my keeper league, I'm all over this guy as a stash away. I can easily see Johnson being the top dog next year in a prolific passing offense.

FWIW, Johnston had 4 drops in the last practice. Pretty sure that was noted as a negative in his draft profile. If he doesn't correct that, he will absolutely lose snaps.

“[Quintin] Johnston, overall, had an up-and-down game. On top of the drop on the deep ball, Johnston also dropped a comeback route on third down on the first drive of the game. His hands are going to be a work in progress. That playmaking is obviously there, though. On his touchdown catch, Johnston ran a stellar route out of the slot, breaking the ankles of Rams cornerback Richard LeCounte III with a shifty release.”

Chargers WR Quinton Johnston caught two passes for 15 yards in Friday’s preseason win over the 49ers.
Johnston led the Chargers in receiving in a game they threw for only 38 yards. Third-year WR Joshua Palmer has been repping in behind Johnston with the first-team offense, but Johnston started all three preseason games and should have the inside track to the No. 3 role. Johnston closes the preseason with an 8/62/1 line on 11 targets.

Quentin Johnston caught 2-of-3 targets for nine yards in the Chargers’ Week 1 loss against the Dolphins.

Johnston was a distant afterthought in the LA offense as OC Kellen Moore called a run-heavy attack against a vulnerable Dolphins front seven. Johnston had one more target than Josh Palmer, so he has that going for him, which is nice. The rookie won’t be a reliable fantasy option until he establishes himself as an every-snap player in the Chargers offense.

Can confirm this as well. Quentin Johnston will be called on to step up. The rookie first-round draft pick has only had 5 receptions for 26 yards through three games this season.

Yes, Joshua Palmer is expected to be the big factor here, as he was last year when Williams was out.

However, I expect they will call on Johnston to step into a more significant role as well.

We will talk to Brandon Staley at 3:30 PT and hopefully get more details.

The Athletic’s Daniel Popper said Mike Williams’ season-ending ACL injury will force the Chargers to use Quentin Johnston as a downfield pass catcher.
The Chargers, according to Popper, “wanted to bring [Johnston] along slowly.” “That plan is out the window” after the team lost Williams to an ACL injury he sustained in Week 3 against the Vikings. Popper expects Johnston to inherit the deep 50-50 balls Williams had seen in the LA offense. Without Williams, Popper said, teams will be more likely to double team Keenan Allen, who has a career day Sunday against Minnesota. Through Week 3, Johnston — a first-round draft pick — has run a route on just 29.8 percent of the Chargers’ drop backs and managed five receptions for 28 yards. Johnston should be picked up in all 12-team leagues as a volatile fantasy producer who will likely play behind Allen and Josh Palmer.

One of Johnston's weaknesses was 50/50 balls.

Despite how he appears, his talent is taking shorter passes and turning them into something more with his RAC ability. Deciding he can suddenly do something he was rubbish at 3-4 months ago because the guy who does it in his current team is injured, simply because he's a similar build to him, doesn't really track for me.
