WR Troy Franklin, DEN (2 Viewers)

Payton's love for lil Jordan has confused and frustrated Saints and now Broncos fans. I think he's mixed in here somehow.
Not sure which Broncos fans you're talking about but they must not be very well informed, because LJ Humphrey is an absolute monster after the catch.

Really?
No one wanted Mims to play more last year?
No one was boasting of Mims and Franklin developing together this summer?
Mims and Franklin are developing together now.

Mims playing more last year wouldn't have made a lick of difference because Wilson couldn't get him the ball anyway

LJ Humphrey is the team's best blocking WR
Oh no no
You claimed to be unsure of which broncos fans said something that was widely commented for more than a year

Um. No.

You made a blanket statement that Broncos fans were "confused and frustrated" why Payton loves LJ Humphrey.

I said was anyone who is "confused and frustrated" about why LJ Humphrey is getting playing time must be not very well informed. Then I listed multiple legit reasons why Payton likes him, including video proof of a skillset no other WR has.

I have no idea why you injected Mims into the conversation.

Anyone think Franklin could become Nix's go to in this offense? Sounds like Payton wants to increase the touches for their young guys at this point.

Troy Franklin caught 5-of-6 targets for 50 yards in the Broncos’ Week 7 win over the Saints.

Fresh off his first NFL touchdown, Franklin posted new season highs in catches, yards and targets. This, on an evening where Courtland Sutton was not targeted. We wouldn’t read too much into that Sutton fact, but coach Sean Payton is clearly trying to get fourth-rounder Franklin more involved in the offense following his slow start. There is such limited upside in this run-first attack with a shaky rookie quarterback, but you could see Franklin coming into WR5 relevance in deeper leagues. The Panthers are a plus Week 8 matchup.

PFF's Nathan Jahnke - NFL Week 4 Recap: Immediate fantasy football takeaways from Broncos-Saints Thursday Night Football

Troy Franklin’s role expands: Franklin set a career-high in receiving yards, breaking the 31-yard mark he set for himself last week.

Over the last two weeks since Josh Reynolds landed on injured reserve, the Broncos have generally used Courtland Sutton, Franklin and Devaughn Vele on passing plays, while Sutton and Lil’Jordan Humphrey are used on run plays.

During those two weeks, Franklin has led the team in targets (nine) and receptions (seven). Thursday night, he caught five receptions for 50 yards, leading the Broncos. While Sutton has constantly been on the field, he wasn’t targeted at all in this game. Franklin was the sixth-wide receiver on our big board between Brian Thomas Jr. and Ladd McConkey and now, he’s playing the number of snaps needed to be a fantasy starter. He’s worth a waiver-wire target because there’s a chance he will lead the Broncos in targets over the rest of the season.

Would love Troy to break out this season. Really liked him out of college, and last year was horrid.
It was but not really unexpected. Word was he was really raw as far as route running and wouldn’t be much of a factor his rookie season. I moved up to grab him when he fell into the 3rd round of my 16 teamer with zero expectations for 2024. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him move ahead of Mims and take over the #2 WR slot. That said, with them adding Engram and Harvey, not sure how valuable the #2 WR will be in Denver this year.

One of the messier rooms in the league, no idea who will rise and fall there. Vele getting good reviews and added Bryant in the draft on top of it.

Bo Nix said he thinks Troy Franklin is playing faster this year. Said his “natural gift” is getting open. Rookies have to learn new system, new techniques, new ideas from new coaches. Now he’s getting back to just getting open.

“I’m getting more ‘Hey, I’m open. Throw me the ball,’ from him.”

“That’s usually a good thing from guys who don’t usually do that.”

“The transition from 11 to 16 is good for him. He looks better.”

Possibly my favorite end of draft sleeper. There's a lot of room for someone to step up in the Denver offense, and ideally its someone with big play ability.

The thing with Franklin is you never know if it will ever click.
Well, to be fair, you can say that about virtually every 2nd year receiver drafted in the 4th round.

I like him as an end of roster stash who is virtually free right now. Going in, it was pretty obvious he had a lot to learn so didn't expect much his rookie season anyway. Also like the fact he played with Nix at Oregon. Ultimately, that may not matter, but it also can't hurt.

So draft him and Mims Jr to lock up the (dynamic) Broncos WR2?
I wouldn't count out Vele as WR2.....and the rookie may see some action.....chasing points at DEN WR2 might be tough...

This is my pick as the 2 in that offense. Another year to bulk up and be familiar with the system.

A legitimate case can be made for Mims, Bryant, Vele, or Franklin as the Broncos' second receiver. Because of the higher cost, I'm out on Mims. I've been grabbing Bryant everywhere I can, because his game does totally look like Michael Thomas's. And I just have fond memories of stashing Thomas in my last bench spot his rookie year, and riding his WR7 finish to the championship in my main money league.

Troy Franklin is a different player this year, man. You can see the confidence.

Two TDs tonight and high points it over a DB.

My goodness, Troy Franklin.

If he's has added contested catches — like that back-shoulder TD grab just now — to his repertoire to go along with his speed, he's going to be a big-time problem for opposing defenses.

Intrigued…but like a lot of these DEN WRs….not sure if there is enough target share to consistently produce FF points…
Yup, he looks good in preseason against second and third string defenders (Will Johnson and Akeem Davis-Gaither were the only projected starters on defense who played). But when the games count, Courtland Sutton and Evan Engram will command the lion’s share of targets, then you have RJ Harvey depending on his usage, and then it’s a revolving door between Marvin Mims, Devaughn Vele, Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant. I think it would take injuries to one or both of Sutton/Engram for that next group to have a chance of being consistently startable in fantasy. Franklin was an analytics darling prior to the 2024 Combine and has rapport with Nix from Oregon, so he’s worth keeping an eye on. But skeptic the opportunity will come without injuries to the guys ahead of him.

One less in the room..who benefits….Franklin/Mims/Bryant?

Vele backed up Sutton, Franklin backs up Mims, so Bryant benefits.
It is hard to say if Mims is ahead of Franklin. It seems like they are trying to expand Mims's route tree but it also seems like Franklin might (already has?) passed him for the team WR2. I like both and was in on Mims but now leaning Franklin.

Mims is a huge breakout candidate along multiple metrics IMO. After recently drafting him, I am biased, so discount away, but he's 3rd yr, came into the league hyped, had a mini WR breakout to end last year after going all-pro as a returner in his rookie year, has a legit offensive HC, and a breakout QB; he is now a starter, and his main competition is a low-end wannabe WR1, not a true alpha. He's a mighty mite, but mighty deserves emphasis with Mims! Maybe. Time will tell...

I agree but we will see if the snap % goes up enough for Mims to be the WR2 on the team. Maybe he gets there with production on fewer snaps, like his run last year. I'm a big fan but I am questioning if we really know the situation.

Listed as a starter on initial depth chart. I am sure there will a rotation, but like his chances of making a nice leap this year in production. Costs almost nothing still.

Starter over Mims?

Offense

Franklin is only listed as a "starter" on depth charts that choose to show three WR's and therefore list an extra slot guy (Franklin).

Depth charts that list two WR's have Sutton WR1 and Mims WR2. The ones below are reputable Broncos sources that "come straight from the team."

Wide receiver (5)

Makes sense, still think he is in for a good year. Payton mentioned he plays two spots, so I imagine there will be a good amount of rotation.

Oh yes. I agree on all counts.

One concern for Franklin might be potential difficulty with press coverage. He had a lot of trouble last year and really didn't face it much in preseason where he pretty much roamed free.

But if he can deal with that and maintain his new-found confidence he could have a major breakout this year.

Press is a concern, but I think Payton is pretty good at scheming to the strengths of his players so I am not overly concerned. Franklin did put on a little weight this off-season so hopefully that along with his release improvements will help combat the issue.

I don't know how much this comes into play, but Nix and Franklin had a U of Oregon connection. If Franklin has made strides as mentioned, Nix may very well favor Franklin over Mims, from past history.
