WR Zay Flowers, BAL (1 Viewer)

My gut reaction live was that this was an immature kid who had a bad penalty followed by a bad play. Followed by some time to reflect, I think it was an immature penalty followed by a competitive player's drive to score at all costs...followed by a lot of frustration (when he hurt his hand on the bench). I'd rather see that kind of fire and frustration than someone who just went and pouted about it. He was impressive - and I believe him when he says he'll learn.

I agree with this. I'm okay with a guy being pissed at himself for screwing up. The reaction i hate most is when players get that cheeky smile and half-laugh when they screw up. Like Josh Reynolds after dropping the 4th down pass in the Lions game.

Agree with most of that, but he should have known to not taunt in a game this important. Not like it was one the officials were going to overlook. Pretty blatant to not only stand over the DB and yack at him, but then to spin the ball basically in his face. Just stupid. But apparently the coaches didn't cover this during the week because Van Noy took the bait when he pushed Kelce. It was so obvious what Kelce was trying to do and I hate that shiot, but he fell for it. Penalty shouldn't have been called but still should have just walked away from that D-Bag in that situation.

There was a game a few weeks back when Flowers scored and did an elaborate celebration and then went over to the sideline and found Lamar and it was like a little brother trying to get his big brothers approval about the celebration dance. Lamar just rolled his eyes like he was trying to get across to him that it really wasn't important.

He can say he will learn, but costly lesson for the rest of the team. They had a great chance to win it all and you never know if that chance will come again.

According to reports from The Baltimore Banner, Ravens WR Zay Flowers is being investigated for his involvement in alleged domestic assault.
According to the article, Baltimore County Police are “investigating an alleged domestic assault” involving Flowers. The investigation also includes a police department in Acton, Massachusetts, per the report, which “acknowledged a domestic violence incident report related to an incident in Baltimore County” involving Flowers. Acton police did not release the report under laws that keep communications between victims of domestic violence/sexual assault and police confidential, so we don’t have many details on the exact nature of the matter. Flowers has not been charged with a crime at this time.

What are people expecting out of Flowers this year?

Finishing as a top 10 WR.
😲

I'm expecting more good things from Flowers, but you're even higher on him than I am my friend.

I am, but I was a loyal and devoted reader of Peter King for years and years and he RAVED about Flowers his rookie year in camp. Said he was one of the most polished receivers he'd ever seen and, well.....that was enough for me to load up on him in dynasty drafts. After seeing his playoff performance (the good parts) I made a decision to back my bets, like a hot roller on a craps' table. I'm all in on this guy.

When the Baltimore Ravens drafted Zay Flowers in the first round of the NFL draft, many knew what kind of talent the AFC North franchise had on its hands.

But now, as the grind of training camp continues, Flowers is still going out and making play after play. And everyone has taken notice, even NBC's Peter King.

"The most impressive rookie I have seen in six camps is Zay Flowers," King said on NFL on NBC. "He lines up across from a corner and unless they literally interfere with him or hold him, he has tremendous separation on almost every cut. His quickness, his speed out of cuts is going to be a thing to watch in the NFL this year."

No doubt to me he has the talent to finish top 10. I just don’t know that the volume and consistency will be there in this passing attack.

That's really cute of Peter King.

Now imagine if someone (me) told you this pre-draft? Now that'd be super ruggedly handsome!!!

Zay Flowers looking like clear-cut No. 1 for Ravens through two games:

16.6 fantasy points per game
98% routes
30% targets
29% air yards

Nice aDOT bump in Week 2 (11.0) with 37% air yards.

If that continues, more big days to come.

A month in, he's not been good.

He had 10 and 11 targets the 1st 2 games of the season, both losses. He's had 6 in each of their last 2 games, both wins.

He' averaging 4.25 receptions per game and less than 40 yards per game.

You do realize that's all game planning and using what's working. If the Ravens can run that effectively every week, it has to affect Flower's number of targets. I believe this is more about that then Flowers.

100% it is.

But the problem is that it IS working so well.

He'll have some good games here and there. But the Ravens seem to have figured things out. I expect them to win lots of football games. This is how they want to do it. And I expect to see more frustration with the pass catchers as a result.

When I say he's not been good I'm speaking in fantasy terms.

That is something as fantasy players we will always have to deal with from time to time. I think Flowers is a great dynasty asset gong forward, but I get it, they like to run the ball right now. Hell, he could be Mark Andrews.

Sure.

I think 4 weeks in though, we have an idea of how the Ravens want to play and win. And they just SMACKED a very good Buffalo team. They're a good football team that had a bad first 2 weeks. They seem to have righted the ship. I think they're going to win a lot of games this year. And I worry several of those wins look like these last 2. So I worry about the inconsistent usage all year.

The other concerning issues for 2024: His ADOT is 6.6. He's not getting the ball down the field for 10+ yards. I get the idea that he can use his speed and elusiveness to break big gains. But when that's the main way they seem to use you over a season it seems problematic.

Long term: I'm probably still buying, but tempering expectations in the short term.

It's pretty hard to be a good fantasy asset when your team is throwing only 18 times total. BAL is winning games running the ball. A lot. And now that have an elite RB along with an elite rushing QB. BAL isn't going change things. Run the ball and play defense.

Flowers is a good dynasty asset but he is going to disappoint this year in redrafts. He's a WR4 at best right now.

He could be part of a good trade bundle with someone in need of a WR, e.g., Rasheed Rice owners.

Zay Flowers generated a career-high +41 yards after catch over expected vs. Commanders. His +72 receiving yards over expected is the 4th-most by any wide receiver this season, per @NextGenStats.

Love this route chart. He had the Commanders DBs running. 😮‍💨

One thing is certain, he gets fed targets as their #1 when the Ravens don't run away with Henry dominating the game script.

Queue him up again vs the Bucs.

How hurt do we think he was last night? Looked electric on his long catch and run but got rolled up on at the end. Looked like an ankle sprain, whether low or high, but he toughed it out the rest of the game.

Not sure he even had another target all night, tbh. Looked like the gameplan shifted to Bateman deep shots and Andrews underneath.

Anyone else keep an eye on Flowers last night? What's your take?

I was wondering the same thing. Aside from the injury, I just wonder if it's similar to the Detroit situation in that the offense is so unstoppable that from one week to the next there is a randomness to which pass catchers eat. Flowers isn't Amon-Ra and Goff doesn't run like Lamar so in one sense they're very different offenses but I just think there will be this kind of variance and that Henry and Lamar are the only 2 Ravens with safe/elite floors. I was expecting a lot more from Flowers last night that's for sure. He had that bad fumble too not sure if that played a part.

My take is I lost by one point due to his 1-11, 19 rushing. Another catch or another yard on the run and I tie. Pretty much sums up this season for me.

I think FF managers who have any Ravens besides Jackson, Henry, & Tucker are gonna have to get used to this. Flowers and Andrews are the next two best shots, but they are script-dependent.

Yeah, the offense is too powerful and going to get too far ahead too quickly against 95% of NFL offenses for anyone besides Lamar/Henry to be dependable each week.

When it first happened I thought we'd lost him for awhile. Checked Dr. Chao and he was dead on with it. He was tweeting he had an eversion/high ankle and I don't know how that is different from a normal high ankle injury but he correctly predicted they would tape it up, he would return but struggle to be effective.

Again I have no idea how this is different from a normal high ankle, why Chao felt so confident he'd return when this normally takes you out 4-6 weeks and what his prognosis is going forward. I can only assume an "eversion" sprain is less severe, and I might be assuming wrong.

Not to get into a big debate on it but IMO he's every bit as good as ASRB in real life but as you said very different offenses and different style of players which makes a comp not so easy. ASRB tougher and more consistent at the catch point, Zay more explosive and multi-faceted is how I see it. He's easily the best WR that Lamar has ever had and his use in totality was actually almost dead even with ASRB's entering the game last night. I know he had two low usage games b2b but his usage the other 4 games, discounting last nights game as a mulligan, was really high. He will occasionaly have a low usage game like those two but I truly think it's more of the exception for him going forward, his role is on the increase. All that of course based on him being healthy which I don't know about and at this point I take the approach of planning on him being out and just be happy if he can play.

Yeah I agree about his talent assessment - I have been comparing him to Tyreek in his shiftiness (others have said that as well) - When I said he isn't Amon-Ra I was thinking from a target-commanding perspective, and yes even though they're different they are certainly on par in terms of talent or close enough. My gut said last night was mostly about the injury. Thanks for sharing that eversion info, I've never heard of that either.

Yeah I invested bigtime into Flowers this year and am a big believer - this doesn't stop me just yet from wanting to autostart him but in some leagues I have some really good other options as well and so for really the first time this season he's a question mark for me at least as I sit here on Tuesday. The injury not the usage is really my biggest question. I'd assume since they taped him and he played that it really isn't that bad. But certainly bad enough last night to limit him.

I really think their script/plan got all jacked up as well due to the rampant penalties. Anyway as soon as someone figures out eversion let us all know!

It's not just coincidence that he just blocked and ran decoy right after he was injured and then returned. He had 2 touches on their first 8 plays which tells you he was a part of the game plan prior to going down.
