Yellowstone - Paramount TV (2 Viewers)

I think the tough part with the show is it started out so strong and as of others have said, I don't think it was meant to be a long lasting show. Getting into its 4th or 5th season and the storylines are really going downhill. It is still entertaining for stretches but overall the storylines are lacking the impact the early seasons had.

Another dud of an episode. Jamie has a child out of nowhere? Beth being constantly bitter and angry is getting old?

Best thing going is the hot trouble maker in town.

I'm about out.

That was the best episode so far this season. Firing the advisors. Lunch with sexy Senator. Pardoning new environmentalist and her then antagonizing Beth. Consoling Monica. Jamie lawyering the tourist. Beth Jamie baby conflict. Cowboy stuff. New hottie playing Jamie. Beth knowing setting up future conflict. They piled a bunch of good stuff in there I thought.

And it was still a bad episode in my opinion. You can tell my the lack of replies here that the show has lost its momentum.

I’m trying my hardest to still love it but yeah, I agree

Yeah, but clearly you don’t actually pay attention to what’s going on. No offense.

I do wish they’d do something with Beth to make her a more endearing character.

I thought her and Jamie were actually going to share a moment. When he said taking her to that clinic was the biggest regret of his life. I mean, he was just a kid. Awful, yes, but he couldn’t really understand the consequences of his actions at that point. Thought she might “forgive” him in some way.

Then Beth just doubles down and threatens to take his son from him.

Did like the potential hit and run moment too. Beth keeps messing with this dude. He’s already murdered two people. Keep pushing and he’s going to snap on her too.

Good suspense in that scene. Then the comic relief when the trucker Dad picks her up.

I guess I still don’t get what some of you are wanting or expecting from this show. It’s silly ridiculous fun.

I keep waiting for Beth to put on a cape to accentuate her super powers. She can start shooting lasers out of her eyes every time a waiter doesn't put enough ice in her drink and use her whisper voice to let him know how stupid every man except her father is, then turn around and brag about what a simpering wimp she's turned Rip into.
Comically bad is a great description for this show. At this point, I only watch it to laugh at how ridiculous it is, and because my gf likes it. Shouldn't they at least make Costner a chain smoking Marlboro man to explain how his voice is so raspy?

Can't really tell by posts.. People don't post much now days.. An example is the Minnesota Vikings thread.. 9-2 and barely any posts since week 1.. :kicksrock:

As for the show.. I think they are doing a good job of building up multiple showdowns.. I will say, as much as I enjoyed Beth in past seasons, this year they are spending too much time on her and Jamie's battle.

The trucker dad's kid had the line of the year...
"Mom is not going to be happy about this" look at Beth and says "she wears the pants in the family, if you know what I mean" :lmao:

You all that bailed because of Beth are missing out... The reason behind her nastiness comes out later and makes you fully understand the "why"..
Wife and I love her character now and are looking forward to the upcoming battle this season
We love hating her. I sympathize on the why…..but she is a miserable, vengeful human being.

Based on the current writing, and from what I've seen of Sheridan's story arcs in the past, here's my guess at the overall "twist"

1) Beth Dutton and Kayce Dutton are not "real" Duttons. Their mother, Evelyn ( Gretchen Mol) had affairs and John Dutton was too busy being a wannabe cowboy hero to notice. She loved Kayce more because there is hope he might be John Dutton's real biological son, but she is completely sure that Beth is the product of one of her affairs.

2) Garrett Randall (Will Patton), whom is presumed to be Jamie's biological father, is actually also John Dutton's half brother. John Dutton's own father ( Dabney Coleman), had some affairs of his own. This explains the anger Randall feels towards the entire Dutton clan ( i.e. he should have had some of the birthright to Yellowstone) and why he's angry enough to kill. And why he was willing to let John Dutton take Jamie away as a baby.

3) Evelyn suffered from mental illness, which explains some of her behavior and she passed on that tragic biological legacy to Beth. Being the product of an affair can also explain why Evelyn is so hard on her and was so cruel to her at the end during the accident.

Since Evelyn was a Dutton by marriage, and not by pure blood ties, it means Jamie is the only real Dutton heir left.

Lee Dutton ( Dave Annable) was killed in the pilot.

Rip Wheeler has no blood ties at all to the Dutton family.

Kayce Dutton will be revealed to be the product of an affair. Thus Tate has no real blood claim to Yellowstone.

Beth Dutton will also be revealed to be the product of an affair.

I think it would be shocking, tragic and hilarious, that all this time, Beth keeps spitting in Jamie's face, that he's not a real Dutton, when in the end, he's the only real Dutton left. And despite what everyone else hates about Jamie, and his poorly written character arc and "cowardice", no one has done more to try to protect that ranch than he has in the end.

In the last episode, Rip tells Carter that "orphans" aren't kicked out of Yellowstone. But that's not true. In many ways, Jamie has always been an orphan and was routinely ostracized. And much of John Dutton's anger at Jamie is really toxic guilt for letting his half brother, Garrett Randall, spiral out of control like he did.

As I said before, John Dutton is really "Fredo Dutton" He's actually quite incompetent and he only has power because he inherited it, and now the plotline will shift to show that weakness is why he got cucked.

So you're really into the show.

Sure I do. I acknowledged everything you said. "Best episode of the season" doesn't automatically make it a good episode. It's more telling on how bad this shows has become.
No offense.

How about this......Beth just happens to be hiding in the corner of the bar Jamie shows up at? Come on.

Beth = Thanos
She would defeat Thanos easily with a scowl and a hurtful remark.

VIDEO: A Dutton Car Ride | Yellowstone | Paramount Network Nov 22, 2022

In this highlight from 501, John (Kevin Costner), Jamie (Wes Bentley), and Beth (Kelly Reilly) share a memorable ride to the ranch.

Look how Fredo Costner treats Jamie. It's pretty horrible.

There is no doubt in my mind at all that Taylor Sheridan has come to hate Kevin Costner, and he's written him as a pure villain without Costner's huge ego figuring it all out.

There is a deep undercurrent of social commentary on racism in nearly all of Sheridan's works. You can see it most evidently in Wind River. But it shades out heavily in Mayor of Kingstown. In effect, Jamie Dutton ( really Michael Randall by birth) is no better than a "mudblood" to Fredo.

What did Fredo ever do? He inherited his wealth and his ranch. He didn't bleed for it. He didn't fight for it. Rip does all the fighting and killing. Beth has to do all the ugly big corporate deal dirty work. Jamie has to handle all the law. Before Lee died, he had to run the ranch. Kayce had to run the cattle enforcement. Fredo just shows up and yells at everyone and go into Rick Grimes style monologues.

At least when Coster was in DePalma's The Untouchables, that version of Fredo was only half a "Mary Sue" trope. Elliott Ness there had flaws and failed. He sustained losses. He have to lose a part of himself to win, and it wasn't really a win in the end.

John Dutton is a cautionary tale from Taylor Sheridan on how actual racists get into power.

VIDEO: Most Dramatic Dutton Meals Yellowstone | Paramount Network Sep 19, 2022

A look back at some of the most dramatic meals the Dutton family has shared.

You can see at the dinner table that Beth isn't a real Dutton. Notice her mannerisms and contrast it to Fredo Dutton. Not just the dialogue, but the actual mannerisms.

Taylor Sheridan is making it clear in a bright neon sign that Beth is not of Dutton blood.

I’m trying my hardest to still love it but yeah, I agree
I’m still enjoying it but Beth centric is a problem. Her rage is a nice interjection occasionally but as a centerpiece it’s made her extremely unlikable.

I’ve said in this thread before that I think Jamie is the most unlikable character in TV history, his weakness is insufferable. But the car scene with Beth where she learns he has a kid actually had me feeling for Jamie, that’s how tiresome her constant rage has become.

Nailed my thoughts on Yellowstone and Beth well. I enjoyed the first couple of seasons a lot but don’t care for the current season much at all. I keep hoping it gets better. The scenes and storylines involving the ranch hands have been my favorites throughout and are the only good parts at this point.

Thought that was a pretty good episode. Casey and his wife deciding it was time to start moving forward. And of course the all out fight.
Loved the throw back to a couple seasons ago when Rip made the cowboys fight it out.
Hopefully soon Jamie's sleeping with the enemy comes back to bite him.
Loved the last 10 minutes or so when they returned to the Cowboy life.. Need more of that

I look forward to your reviews of holiday meals in all the Hallmark Christmas shows.

Tonight was a new low for me. Such an awful show.
Could not agree more. There is no defending this garbage any more. It's terrible. Costner has pretty much mailed it in. Rip not being Rip. Centering on whiny Beth. None of it i working for me.

Critics seem to agree:

“Yellowstone has now become Dallas. Beth is Alexis Carrington. Kayce is the only saving grace. The rest are soap opera cartoons. Taylor Sheridan must have too many projects and is phoning in this show relying on tired plotlines. First 4 seasons were so much better”
“The show continues its slide into low grade melodrama soap opera seen in previous seasons. Keep hoping for more, but not a good start w/ this season. Taylor, you may reconsider your stance on that writers room and its existence. Come on dude, you are stretched too thin .. admit it, and go hire some writers.”
“Season 5 off to a terrible start. Did the writers run out of material? Two hours of re-run plot lines, with it's signature mail-in-moment being Beth at the bar verbally undressing some guy. We get it. There is no maturation...good or bad...in these characters. The characters are saying the same old things...doing the same old things...becoming incredibly predictable. We love Yellowstone, but these first two hours were D-R-Y.”

Decent episode. Hope to see more of the cowboying next episode. The fight between Beth and Summer was cartoonish. But it seems they have now developed some understanding and mutual respect for each other. Will be interesting to see where that goes.

I tapped out on this show as ridiculous after season 2 and my wife watched the rest. I watched the last couple episodes with her….yikes!!

Just move this thing to daytime TV where it belongs with the other “mommy’s stories” ….. only Montana style.

Last two episodes were Walking Dead type of nothing happening.
Yeah, last night in particular was odd. I had a sense of impending doom for 60 minutes with all the light hearted background music and ... nothing. Other than a 90 year old dying peacefully in his sleep, that is.

Loved the scenic wrangling.. Could have watched them bringing in the cattle for the full episode as it was the best parts. I knew the old guy was a goner the minute they laid down under the tree. The moment with the wife was heart breaking :sadbanana:
Tired of the whimpy Jamie getting used again and again every season. Time for Beth to finish him off for good.
The whole president coming to the reservation was stupid and a waste of time. They've been building up that storyline long enough, time to finish that one as well.
Give us more ranch time, and less soap opera stuff.

Reservation Beth has taken over as the most cartoonish villan now that the Market Equities CEO is out of the picture. Everything she says is cliché' evil speak with a comical raspy voice and evil scowl. It's like TS decided to make a real life Cruela Deville.
