You're Told a Bottle of Wine Costs "Thirty-Seven-Fifty"... (1 Viewer)

If you have to ask how expensive it is, you can't afford it.
And if you can't clearly tell someone how much something costs, you shouldn't be selling it.

Did she lie about the price? Did it not cost 3750? Did she say 37 and 50, thus indicating a decimal point? If the customer was unclear on the price, he should have asked for clarification.
So close...I had Page 6 for when someone would come in and ignore all the previous conversation and try to start the debate all over again.

You don't seriously expect me to read the whole thread do you? You are as naive as the wino here.

I asked how much a shot of Clase Azul reposado was last night and the server said "Fourteen."

I understand that restaurants have to make money somehow, but $1,400 for a shot of tequila is absurd. Something like $14 would be a lot more reasonable. (That'd be "zero point one four" in restaurant-speak, I suppose.)
Ra's Al Ghul Reposado?

So if you were selling something and it cost, say, $4.50, you would say to the buyer, "That will be four and fifty, please."

That's fine if you speak like that, but you'd be the only person I've ever encountered that would phrase it as "four and fifty" rather than "four fifty".

It's typically how they quote euros over the pond.

BTW, The Borgata is in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. HTH.

Context is key here - if she had said the bottle was Thirty-Seven Fitty - you could probably assume, the gallon of Mad Dogg is not going to run you 4Gs.

- The Borgata offer to cut the bottle price to $2,200 was paid “three way” among those at the business dinner, Lupo said. So the issue was resolved until the man who ordered went to the media, apparently. That’s relevant because a) Borgata accepted $1,500 less than the menu price;
But still hundreds of dollars above market price.

- The customer who ordered the bottle, his wife, and a friend all expressed shock at the bill. The one element that can’t be reconciled by an honest misunderstanding is the issue of the order-er himself: either he insisted on “the best,” or he didn’t. Wait, maybe there is one possibility: The customer thought a decent bottle was $10 and “the best” was $37.50. Maybe at a cheap liquor store, but not at a restaurant. Still, the man who ordered claimed he knows very little about wine, so….
They paid the bill because they were embarrassed - the guy who ordered 'the best' most of all. If he knew nothing about wine he could easily think $37.50 is 'the best' they had.

It's weird that this debate is still going. This takes almost a perfect storm of "misunderstanding" (indeed, if a misunderstanding happened at all). The guy who ordered had to not be able to read the marked price on the wine list. He had to be so ignorant of wine as to think that he could a sub $40 bottle at a restaurant off a casino floor. Everyone else at the table would have to be paying no attention.

Maybe all that stuff happened, but it's hard to blame that on the restaurant staff.

Yet they do indeed sell 50 different bottles under $50. IMO it all depends on if he stated "I want the best". If so, the server may not be a complete ##### for suggesting that wine to a guy who said he knows nothing about wine.

The steak dinners were $44. This place was fairly reasonable, so the expectation for a $40 bottle of wine is much more reasonable than a $4000 bottle.

Can we get a screenshot of the wine list again? What was the average bottle of wine priced at? Did the list go from $30, $40, $50, $75, $100, $135, $150, $275, $250, $280, $300, $365 and then jumping to $3750?

If so, it is seems very likely the waiter pointed in the general area of a bottle wine and said "thirty seven fifty" If you're a few drinks in, and not wearing reading glasses, I could EASILY see someone not realizing they were pointing to the most expensive bottle and just agreeing thinking it couldn't be more than $200.

IMO. First fault goes to the manager. I'm instructing my wait staff to not ever push a $3k bottle of wine unless its some Sheik( :hey: ) rolling up with gold wine goblets and ordering 50 Wagyu steaks. Second fault goes again to the manager for not double checking. It takes two seconds to introduce yourself and say,"it'll be our pleasure to serve you our finest bottle of wine" and slip in the prices somehow BEFORE opening it. COVER YOUR OWN ###. You're not going to offend anyone. It's not like they just ordered an $80 steak and you're asking them if they're okay with the price. This is a freaking MORTGAGE payment.

Lmao at anyone thinking the negative publicity will hurt the restaurant at all.
1 star reviews are piling up.
lol at people giving one star reviews without even eating there and assuming they know exactly what happened.
I'm not saying it's right but it does influence people. They've already lost more than the cost of the wine.
have they? Business is down?
If it lowers their rating on yelp it most definitely will in the long run.

I gave them a 5-star rating. Their rating is still at 4-stars, and they have a name brand, and located off a casino floor? yelp won't matter to them. People who order $3750 bottles of whine, don't check yelp....

Seems like there's more than 1 steakhouse in that casino. If i'm from out of town visiting, i'm probably going to whichever one is rated higher. If Flay's drops to 3.5 and the other one is 4 or higher then it's an easy choice.

Flay is a huge tv personality and has a rep to uphold. 2k is nothing to him. Shocked he hasn't stepped in front of this.

the place is in the middle of the busiest and best casino in AC, has phenomenal food, phenomenal service, and is always packed. It wont hurt them a cent. People arent gonna not go because of one person being tricked into an expensive bottle of wine.

So you're saying not a single person will decide not to eat there over this?

doubt it. I cant think of a single reason why anyone would let this influence their decision.

People have boycotted things for far less.

I checked Yelp and it's not even the only steakhouse in the casino. If I were there then Flay's wouldn't be the one I go to.

Wine list. Lowest price on that page is $780.

It's really a shame that since they offered up a bottle of wine more than $700 less expensive as "their best," this may really hurt their sales of the Pauillac, Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 for $4501.

LOL at the 01. I can only assume that's there so that the waitress can say "forty-five oh one" instead of "forty-five hundred."

If you really look at it, after the manager's statement, I believe the customer has a defamation of character lawsuit against the restaurant. The customer just told his side of the story in which you could see the blame on both sides. The manager on the otherhand made a definitive statement that there was no misunderstanding, which clearly implies the customer is a swindler and is lying. At first it was something that I would have probably dropped as a lesson learned. But with the manager's statement, I would throw a $1+ million lawsuit at them.

There's a $36 bottle of Merlot just below it...
Oh yeah. I had it zoomed enough where I thought the one is question was the last on the page.

That's a big deal, since if she pointed anywhere just beneath it, there's one very close to that assumed $37.50.

You have a better chance of catching ebola, than you do of winning that suit.

BTW - there has been exactly 1 review since I left mine - not exactly getting "piling up"

He didn't know nothing he knew "very little about wine". I also know very litte about wine, but I know the best at restaurant like that is not going to be 37.50.

:lmao: @ taking a 4.0 versus 3.5 rating on Yelp as a true indication of anything.
