Sober February (1 Viewer)

I'm back in this year.  If GM can do it with his 8 kids, I can do it with my 3.  Giving myself an exemption this saturday (6 year olds birthday party, house full of my in laws and screaming kids).
:hifive:

Day 2 in the books.  Been 60 hours now since I last had a drop.  I equate this to a drive across the country, from Oregon to Maine.  Feel like I'm just about to cross Oregon into Idaho by the time I fall asleep tonight.  Long f'n way to go, but too far away from home now to turn back if I forgot anything.

Irish Twinkie mentioned TV and chilling being a trigger for him to imbibe.  For me, it's grilling (we grill year round).  Last night I threw some chicken on the Weber and enjoyed a glass of Kombucha as I tended to the poultry.  No cravings yet, but the weekend is coming.  This will be the hard part of the road trip for me, but I'm resolute as of now.  Trying to plan out some family hikes and other activities to stay busy.

Also back to walking and taking the train to work in hopes I can shed a few pounds.  It's not Orange Theory Fitness, but it's 5 extra miles of walking per day.

I am in.  On day 6.  First Super Bowl I can remember not pounding beers from 4pm on.

I usually work out every morning but now have added a evening workout..something light just to keep me from wanting to hit a happy hour.
I wish I could add this.  But with 3 little needy kids and a stay-at-home wife, I just can't justify leaving the house in the evening for a workout.  I usually help with cooking, cleaning, bathing and bedtime so wife can have a bit of a break.  But I like your plan and would implement it on a going forward basis when the kids are older.

If I don`t do something and it gets dark at 5pm and zero outside I want to drink.

Plus I live close to a bunch of pubs that have good happy hours.  Wed is usually the day I hit happy hour  between weekends. Place by my home has a vibrant happy hour where I know a bunch of people. 2 dollar drafts and half off apps 4-7 ..makes it tough as I could go for a beer soon.

6 days in and sleep is slowly improving. Definitely snacking more but still less calories than the multiple high abv craft beers I was consuming. Just had a really good workout.

The good/bad news is that because I work the federal compressed work schedule I have 3 consecutive 3-day weekends left in February.  Weather is warming up so I'll have plenty of yard work /home improvement stuff to keep me busy.

Last time I did this, the second weekend was the toughest. The novelty had worn off and I couldn't see the end. Good luck everyone.

Yeah, I've been a little hungrier lately and it's no mystery why.  Refilled a growler tonight with Lemon Ginger Kambucha and bought club sodas with limes for the house. Was pleasantly surprised when the cashier rang up $13.86 as my total.  Also haven't been charged a penny at the bar this week, so just tip my gal a few bucks each day for the steady stream of club soda and limes.  Didn't even consider the cost savings of doing this. Bonus!

Alright, settle down, Malaise.  It's only been 3 days. Lotta road left and the hard stretches are coming...don't stain your steering shoulder patting yourself on the back now.

Heh heh, yeah....genes.

:oldunsure:
lol

Plus I can't lose weight.  I know part of it is getting older, part because I was on the shelf for 6 out of the last 24 months with foot surgeries BECAUSE I EXERCISE TOO MUCH!!!  I eat very healthy most of the time too.  Sucks.  Again, genes.  I've had a gut my whole life even though I played sports year round through HS.

Anybody know anything about this Coolscuplting thing?

You mean like everyone who is doing a sober "February" but not starting till after the Super Bowl?  I said I am giving myself one day.  Pretty sure one day of drinking is better than an entire month.  Also, you haven't meet my MIL or been in the same house as her and my wife.
When I started this thread SB was in January.  I go into March to make up for lost days.  Usually.

Yesterday I wanted to go to happy hour so bad..I actually got dressed and was ready to go.  Wed is always my Happy Hour day as I workout  S-M-T-W and feel I deserve it as I always takes Thursdays off from the gym.

I noticed if I have not had dinner yet I want a few beers even more because you get a nice buzz.   So I made a protein shake and drank it and it totally killed my thirst for beer because the shake fills you for a couple of hours and beer would taste horrible after. So instead of happy hour drank a shake and watched Family Fued.

BTW was in Champagne a few months back and got caught in a speed trap.  Goes from 50 to 35 in a literal blink of the eye and the cop was sitting right at the transition.  He was a young cocky #####.  Then the dickwad told me there wouldn't be any points which was a lie.  Glad I looked into that but cost me $600-$700 to take care of it.

So far so good... work happy hour looming on monday to celebrate the launch of a project... that one is going to be tough.

Between my office and the train stop is a BWW which I get to usually with an hour or to spare before my train arrives.  I use that hour to decompress between work and home and know all the bartenders and have a few bar pals that meet me there a few times a week.

Been there every day this week.  Club soda and limes.  Still enjoying the time and haven't been tempted to cheat yet.

You got this, man.

Day 4 just about in the books.  And now....the first weekend.  F|_|ck.

We got this GB.

Today is much better, but not perfect. I realized how overweight I'd gotten. But I'm no longer shaking and not really cramping too badly.

And I feel more with it, yes, like coked up but with munchies as St. Louis Bob so eloquently put it.

Well, crap.  My wife has been making tea at night so I asked her to fix me one, only I didn't want her passionfruit bags, I opted for green tea and lemongrass and guess who is wide awake like a barn owl right now?  Hint:  IT'S ME!

:hot:

You got this, though. Just think about how green tea cleanses -- or is good for -- your liver (it's recommended in studies by doctors and nutritionists for people with fatty livers) and you'll remember that there are health reasons for this. Good luck.

Little whiskey on the gums ought to take care of that.

I finally tapped out at midnight, which is fine but past my normal, old man bedtime.  I did enjoy it and have really liked this lemon ginger Kambucha which also has some green tea.  I just don't drink coffee (my only source of caffeine for 20 years) past 10ish am.  Body wasn't expecting it.

Didn't have any spare Panera Gift Cards laying aorund to give him?

I think everyday this week I have remembered my dreams, only my stupid alarm keeps waking me up at the wrong times.  This morning I was about to beat the snot out of someone for picking on some kids.  Just putting this out there incase one night I end up sleep punching my wife.

Day 8 in the books. Off today. I got an early workout in then did some yardwork. Beautiful day. Home alone. Problem was I was itching so bad to crack a beer after the yardwork. Instead I hurried into the shower so I could run some errands and stay busy.

Friday night conquered. Boy, that's been a while.

Supposedly a giant snowstorm coming and I've always associated those with hunkering indoors and boozing hard.  This might be rough but at least Friday night is behind me.

Filled my growlers with Kambucha tonight and bought some chai ginger tea.  Buckle up....

Welp, made it through Friday without incident.

Fingers crossed, hoping for the best on Saturday and Sunday (helps that there is no football).

eta* I should say I feel confident today. What my body went through the first few days let me know that it was time to cool it with the alcohol intake. It was pretty ugly.

Football and grilling are two enormous triggers for me.
Last night was very difficult..had a long week at work, got home worked out and then picked up my wife at her work.  My wife says a few of her friends are meeting for a drink so lets go for awhile.   I am already dying for a beer and we walk in and everybody has frosted mugs of beer sitting on the table, music playing and people having a good time...I dam near said screw it and ordered a 22oz beer, but then ordered a tall soda and lime and guzzled it along with a big glass of water and it passed.

Good work, GB. It's tough to be around people drinking when you're not. I spent six months sober I think the year before last. My sister-in-law, brother, and I went to a Metallica show. Needless to say, I was tempted. I hung out half the show at the merchandise tent because I was so craving a beer in general admission at the show. It's tough. It's why a lot of places helping you get sober talk about people, places, things as triggers.

Dinner tonight with friends

Buckle up buttercup

Need a kambucha recipe if anyone has a good one. That stuff is supposed to be good for you.

Made through the casino party.  Brought Cal with me so we could keep an eye on each other.  I was there literally  5 minutes when GB's were asking me to go grab a drink and gamble.

We're supposed to get freezing rain for the next 3 days thought which will shut down anything outside which sucks.  Plus I love having a few glasses (bottles) of wine and sitting around all day watching movies when everything is shut down.  House is going to *sparkle*.

It is and it should be easy to find.  At least, it is out here. My local grocer has two kinds on tap and I can fill a 64 oz growler for $9.99.  A lot of bars/restaurants have them on tap out here.  All your grocers should have them bottled, especially the natural grocers. It's a solid replacement for beer.

I don't touch soda pop.

That was a long long long day.  Didn't leave the house once which wasn't wise.  Snow never really did hit hard nor stick so we could have done something.

But, not all bad.  Had some good family time. Built forts, goofed around and later, my older boys joined me and my 6 year old daughter for Apples to Apples and Uno, which was cool of them.  Made her whole day.

And we had a great family dinner with homemade pasta, gnocchi and meatballs.  All 7 of us ate together for the first time in a long time (older boys busy with theatre and basketball plus we usually host bigger family dinners on weekends for my dad/sis).  So that was quite nice.

Important thing is I made it absent a drop of booze.  I make it until 10pm tonight and that's one full week.  Embarrassed to admit the last time that happened.

Had a really good day yesterday. Watched hockey all day because it was Hockey Day In Canada and games were on in every time slot imaginable. Hockey never triggers me to drink, so it was pretty chill, pretty mellow. There's a pace and flow to the game I find soothing.

Went out to eat with family and gorged. Fish and chips and mussels in a great sauce. Good bread. Had fun. Starting to sleep deeper, have vivid dreams again. All in all, this is a big change from the norm. Let's see what today brings.

Toughest week to start this for me. On the road for the week in meetings with a bunch of bureaucrats driving me nuts with their BS. A couple of dinners drinking water with these buffoons and dying for a drink. Home Friday with Mrs. Punk and our usual routine is one bottle of wine making dinner followed by one bottle eating dinner, followed by a night cap. Needless to say, it was tough but we got through it! To top it off it is -30 (Celsius) or -50 (with the wind chill) and even the dog doesn't want to go outside. Being stuck in the house doesn't help much.

Trying to enjoy my Sunday morning coffee without Baileys ....

Celcius????  Holy crap.  Do you live on Hoth?

Why wouldn't it be?

My dad drinks those now. Taking chemo pills so he can only have 1 or so real beers a day.  He has moved on to NA beers.  Think you're good.
I know they don`t taste very good.

Last year my buddy quit drinking and brought over a 12 of Labatt NA.    My daughters came over and wanted a beer so I go in the garage and pour the NA beer in a frosted glass and give it to them.  They drink the first one and want another..about halfway through the second one my one daughter says 'WTH is this?"     I just started laughing.
