2020-21 NBA *Playoffs* Thread: Man who claims to not watch the NBA at all somehow able to recite last 3 years of NBA ratings at command

i really do love how Celtics' fans have loved to crap on the Sixers for the past 3 years, yet the one year the Sixers have the better seed and the C's don't meet pre-season expectations the fanbase flees. Pleasantly surprised that some of the C's fans are creeping back in to say how they want to play the 6'ers since they own "real estate" in their head (quote is from a recent Celtic's podcast, which is happy to steal that line about owning real estate from Embiid).

Have to say for the 6'ers, i think the best match-up would be the C's too. In all honesty, i can see the Sixers taking the other 3 a little light and maybe giving up a game or so. With the Celtics' you have to think guys like Embiid and Tobias remember the sweep, specifically the embarrassment,  from last year. I don't know if Doc cares about the C's anymore, but i would think he wouldn't mind the 6'ers using the C's as a stepping stone to the Eastern Conf. finals.

I would be worried because i do think Brad Stevens is one of the top coaches in the league. Fortunately the the lead players on the team seem to have tuned Stevens out and would rather just focus on padding stats. Ben can lock down Tatum, and has for the past 2 years, so i don't see a reason to feel any concern. Only thing for me is i think i might lean on betting the Money Line more then the point spread because the games are always close and Celtics' players like to turn it up a bit in the 4th Q.

GUESS WHAT I AM DOING TODAY??????                 Going to see the Knicks @ Clippers in staples -- wooot wooot, been so long. then... heading for mali

Hickory dickory dock, Ben’s 3 bounced off the shot clock. OH!

Guys, this thread sucks every year.

I would add the Knicks having a winning season above .500 as well as a prediction i don't think anyone predicted.

Biggest guess for me with Jazz and Suns is how far they may make it in the playoffs. I have not heard anyone on the national podcasts predict either to make the finals, let alone the WCF, so i have to think there is plenty of material to motivate the teams if they need any of it.

is Lebron going to be healthy enough to even play on Wednesday?

much less make it through the playoffs at 80%?

He seemed ok at the end of the game and said he’s good to go. With how cautious LeBron / the Lakers have been with his ankle, I would have expected more comments like “we’ll take it day to day”, etc if it was bugging him more.

He was probably faking the ankle tweak so that he has an excuse if they lose to GS on Wed night.

Could have made a case for the Jazz as a top seed. Klay out for the year so it took the Warriors out. Lakers and Clippers were going to be resting guys a lot and with the shorter season and the Jazz are super deep and good defensively. The Suns were just amazing. After the finish they had last year I was expecting them to be a 5 at best, but probably in thr play in.

You won't have to worry about the Celtics.  After they lose to the Zards they will lose to the Hornets and can all ditch the dump that is Boston and head South.

It has nothing to do with PHI.  Losing to the Nets means that they have to face the realization that haul in draft picks they got resulted in a massive failure and that they will be looking up at the franchise whose lunch money they stole for the foreseeable future.

Then that whole post series dab fest with Kyrie and his ex-teammates

Option 1:  stay up late

Option 2:  DVR the game and watch some of it at night, the rest of it the next morning

Option 3:  do option 2 except fast forward through the painful portions when Curry is on the bench  (which is what I do)

All good suggestions, but really still do NOT totally understand it.  Most of these teams have essentially national followings.  For the same reason that the most popular tv shows have generally not been on at 10pm Eastern, I wouldn't think that's optimal for playoff games.  That's doubly true with a fairly large number of people working from home and easily able to watch starting at 5pm or 6pm local time (not to mention those who can watch while working).

The East doesn't rule the world.  You need 2.5 hours between the games.   Move the Lakers game back an hour and you end up having the Memphis/SA game during work hours and miss out on all that audience.

I agree it's a national audience, but this is TWO California teams.  The entire state is going to be watching.... so in this case the West coast audience is more important than the East.

If you move it back to 5 or 6pm like you want (let's say 530pm Pacific time), what time would you have the Memphis/SA game?  I know its not nearly important of a game, but what time would you schedule it?

Nobody out East is watching Lakers-Warriors anyway.

My quick playoff predictions for play ins. Bet the opposite.

Warriors over Lakers and Lakers over Memphis.

Wizards over Celtics and Celtics over Pacers.

I have the same picks.  Would make for the best possible first round in the East.

BOS VS PHI and WAS VS BKN would be fun series' and story lines, and the other 2 series' will be close.

the Wizards getting the Nets in the 1st round will be fun. I am guessing the over will be a bet that many are on for those games. Hoping Beal can heal up a bit if they win on Tuesday, because seeing a healthy Beal in the playoffs will be enjoyable.

And if they lose, it will be pretty funny if Heyward can make it back for that 2nd game, and everyone can see Rozier and Heyward look to torch their old team

hmm, certainly will be something to consider. He ti give credit to the Sixers reddit page, where they often talk about wagers they put up and donate to various charities the Sixers support.

Wish my bookie would do that when i have to buck up after my losses

i've done it 3-4 times in this thread, and a few more times around the board, something i started doing 20 yrs ago when i worked in a casino and wasnt allowed to make actual bets with my customers, so we started making them for charity. i remember we ended up sending almost 10K in phone cards to soldiers deployed in the Persian Gulf as a result of interest in our charity bets

my FFA baskeball bets include one with the master of our NBA threads, when i bet @Capella early in 2018 that LeBron would sign with the Lakers, which IIRC was a greater than 5-1 proposition at the time of our wager. to my knowledge, no one has welched so far

Well when you fish and exaggerate by saying the 1 seed isn't great, and isn't even 'good', then it might come from that.  I put the Nets above the Sixers in the East, and heck I'll even put the Bucks on par with them.  Tied for 2nd in a div and you're considered a 'good' team.

Will happily take your charity bet if it comes to that.  Let's bump it to $1000.

Vegas is smart enough to jack the over number huge in those games.  I don't think it will be that enticing.

But yes, Russ, Harden, KD on the floor at once will be awesome.  Add in Kyrie and Beal too.

Not disagreeing with you, just found it funny you use the blowout word since there was an ESPN article the other day mentioning exactly that.  Part of it reads:

I've heard from partisans of both Ball and Edwards suggesting the race is a blowout. Nope.

Advanced numbers suggest a blowout -- for Ball. Edwards is 12th among 34 rotation rookies in PER, 26th in value over replacement player, and 29th in win shares. Ball is first, second, and ninth, respectively.

Ball has made positive contributions to a team with real stakes since day one. He has been the better shooter, playmaker, and rebounder. His statistical edge in everything but raw points and minutes is overwhelming.

Ball wins here, but it's close.

It’s really impressive that the Clippers were able to field a squad that was bad enough to lose to the Thunder on Sunday. Might be more impressive than if they were to win it all. Patrick Patterson played 42 minutes!

I own the foolishness of being a degenerate NBA gambler (only sport I gamble on) and I won't touch either game. Indy with still unknown injury status throws me off. I think if they get a good game from Sabonis and Brogden's 5 minute "stints" turn into more cuz he's good to go - Indy can get this. Celtics dealing with mental healthy issues lately, but it's playoff bball today. Smart, Brown, Tatum - gamers all the way. Boston at 90% power handles the Wiz, but they're just a mystery.

No bets, no confidence, I'll go with Indy and Boston.

In playoff games I used make tough calls based on the best player in the game. As good as Russ and Beal have been, and as fun as Lamelo has been, the best players in these games are Tatum and Sabonis. Smart and Brown are not a good matchup for Russ and Beal. I'm going to talk myself into throwing a fraction of a unit on Boston.

Boston will be favored, but I'll go bold (and homer) to say that without Williams and Brown the Celtics are done.  The Cs have no rim protection except for ... gulp, Tristan Thompson.  Ha.   The Ws can throw three different types of centers at him.  Ish Smith will be on the court a lot w Westbrook, so Smith can guard Walker.  Even if Beal plays an average game I think Wiz win by 8+

This is about what Charlotte has looked like for the last third of the season sadly. Very dependent on the catch and shoot three to fall, and it isn't tonight (4-19 from deep).

Jeez, my addled mind typed that forgetting about Brown's wrist. I would love to see more Wiz ball. I'm such a Westbrook fan. I think it will be a helluva game, unlike the current one. Boston is -2. Beal's hammy cannot be fully healed, but he was good going 80% in the last game.

I'll change my pick to - not a clue, but go Russ go.

Here are the players who played in at least 50 games as a 19 year old and scored more points per game than Anthony Edwards did this year (19.3ppg):

  • Luka Doncic 21.2ppg
  • Carmelo Anthony 21.0ppg
  • Lebron James 20.9ppg
  • Kevin Durant 20.3ppg

  • Capella changed the title to 2020-21 NBA Thread: The quest for sport’s most anonymous trophy begins

Pretty disappointing end to the season for Charlotte. As they mentioned in the broadcast, the Hornets played the second highest percentage of minutes from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year players. Some, like Bridges, really showed another gear at times. Jalen McDaniels stepped into the void when injuries piled up.

Still, was an exciting but flawed team. A lot of the most flawed players in the rotation (Monk, Zeller, and Biyombo) will be off the books. Someone will pay Graham more than he is worth. Rozier has elevated his game going into the last year of the 3/60 contract, but Hayward's injuries really make his contract stick out. Should have signed a real big instead.

Getting a better lottery ball is probably better than getting destroyed by Embiid and Howard in round 1. Ball should be a stud, but they'll need a lot more to be competitive. Will be pleasantly surprised if Kupchach and MJ don't mess this up....
