DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

23a - Fabolous - "Breathe" (2004)

Pretty much the epitome of early-mid 2000s hip-hop, but it has held up much better than the rest of the stuff I listened to when I was 17.  Video featuring a young Bodie Broadus.

What is the ruling on a song that is released and doesn't do well and then is remixed and  re-released later and becomes a big hit? Can we use either date or does it have to be the original release?

I would say a remix is a new song but I am not making the rules.

It's not a remix like a rap song remix with different rappers on it, but it was remixed and they changed the actual name of the song for the re-release. I am going with it and if people don't like it, I can change.

similar question - song gets released at the end of a year as a single, then released on an album in the next year.  Unless someone vetoes it, I'm going to draft it in the year the album was released.
Either year is acceptable
Sorry for the bother and you've probably already answered this but what if the song appears on an EP in one year and then on an album the next year?  Are both those years acceptable?

Is this Jeopardy?  "What do you say when Chris Brown walks in the room?"
Wonder if I can squeeze a Chris Brown song on my mix at the end here.  Whitney/Bobby and Rihanna/Chris on the same mix, the domestic violence mixtape to end all mixtapes.  Hell even that Kanye song is about a guy hitting his girl and going to prison.

Any open early year spots open for Tina/Ike?

I have a Rihanna song in the bullpen, but it's going to have to wait for tomorrow.
Her music is generally very good.  It's heavily produced and poppy, but very good nonetheless.  I considered probably close to 10 of her songs but 2007 was the best year to take now that I'm whittling down my years, and "Umbrella" was my favorite song off of that album.  You have a lot of good options.

Time to snag 2 artists that I thought would have been drafted by now as they both have a few songs that I hear in jukeboxes all the time. Both might be a bit corny, but I can't deny they are catchy as hell.

23.x

1974- Bachman Turner Overdrive   Let It Ride

23.x

2011- fun. featuring Janelle Monae     We Are Young

Oh, yeah. I'm a rockist, but there's a serious hip hop and R&B influence that rolls through my stuff. Not like you, Eephus, or Bender, but I love New Jack, neo-soul, Motown, hip hop, rap, etc. Especially hip hop.

Differing stages in my life have led to different forms of music being loved by me, and she was pretty darn impressive from '07-'09.

It's tough to just give Rihanna credit because her songs are so produced.  There's nothing wrong with that or particularly new about it.  Phil Spector >>> hey.  But when I hear a Rihanna song (and I drafted S.O.S., so I obviously enjoy them) I'm almost always caught by the beat.  Her voice is unique and works well in that context, but you don't get the sense that the song is a result of her particular vision.

Totally true. She's a pop star, and all that entails. Personality and voice carry the day.

I agree with all of this.  She's pretty much a pre-packaged and marketed pop superstar with a bit of a hip-hop flair.

I was reading about "Umbrella" before drafting it today, turns out it was written for Britney Spears, and her label turned it down.  So it's not like Rihanna is in the studio putting these songs together.  But hey, they're super catchy, she's pretty and has a distinctive voice and style, and people like to dance to them.  That works for my jukebox for sure.

Zilla, how many songs have you not been able to add to the Spotify master juke because they aren't available?

Btw, thanks for setting that up. I've been listening to it a lot and hearing stuff I ain't ever heard before that I now like.

Round 23a - Kick Out the Jams - Presidents of the USA (1995)

The Presidents covered this 1969 MC5 song on their first album.  And it's one of my favorite albums.  I love me some Peaches.
I have a poster and a shirt from their These Are The Good TImes People tour. Love this band. Groovy, funky, jammy, punky.
