Eifert will end up sending stone hands Gresham to the bench. We will see some 2 TE sets, especially in the redzone and that will be a matchup nightmare. I like the pick, especially factoring in Gresham only being signed through '14 at the same time a lot of contracts are up. This will allow the Bengals to focus on the big characters and not have to worry about getting Gresham back when the time comes.

I think if we see Cyprien available we will take him next. If not, I wouldn't be shocked at Lacy (not the guy I want). The Bengals have earned the benefit of doubt the last couple seasons. Looking forward to tonight.

I would like to see Cyprien at 37, Giovanni Bernard at 53.

How is +8 catches and +141 yards on +4 targets a "step back"?

Gresham may not be resigned after his rookie deal is up, but he's not going anywhere before then -- most certainly not to the bench. Eifert will be worked into two TE sets like NE uses. Unlike Gronk and Hernandez though there's no obvious 1a/1b -- they're fairly similar.

Personal opinion, I think Eifert will end up being instead of a WR at least until very late. He's another pass catching weapon, so he fills that void.

I'm not sure how much we'll really see 2TE, but it will happen at least once in a while and they'd still like the year to see what they've got with Sanu, Jones, and Hawkins. If WR looks like a problem, maybe the 2014 crop will be better.

In the mean time, I'm with the consensus. Cyprien, Lacy, Watson.... Maybe LB at 53 Te'o or ABrown.

 
Playing GM, I was hoping either Trufant, or Floyd if he's gonna drop that far.

Bur Eifert is a solid pick, and will help Dalton immensely.

Coming up, I have a sneaky suspicion the Honey badger will be in the mix for the Bengals, esp if they decide to trade down to a mid third.

Marvin was Bernard's Pro Day, if that means anything.

Would the bengals be crazy to take Geno if he's at the 2.7? I know we have Dalton, but his arm strength is so limited.

Give me Justin Hunter at the 2.7. Hunter on one side, and AJ on the other, with Eifert and Gresham in the middle, and Hawkins ........nice offensive nucleus.

 
I agree with the assesssment that Eifert probably takes us out of any WR picks until the very late stages. But a young WR really isn't a critical need when you have Sanu and Jones drafted last year and Baby Hawk still in the mix. If anything it'll help those guys develop too.

How many drops did Gresham have this year compared to last? It seemed like more. That said, I am in the camp that this doesn't have that much of a negative effect on Gresham as might be perceived. I think New England and the diversified offense has what we've been shooting for all along here.

Similar to the previous poster, even if S and RB are chalk I'd love to see Cyprien and then one of the RBs at 53. I would be all that shocked to see Watson at 37 (especially if Cyprien is gone) but I think the 3rd is a better spot for us to get a tackle since so many are already gone.

He took a step back as far as drops. I watched every game and he had some huge drops. He was horrible in the loss to Houston in the playoffs.
 
Hunt, a new project for Zimmer. Of course we've done well with DEs, so In Zim we Trust.

Outside of Safety in round 3 I really think we are in BPA territory for the rest of the draft :)

Margus Hunt was the first player to contact the quarterback on all eight of his sacks last season. His average sack took 2.36 seconds from snap to sack, fastest among BCS front-seven prospects rated 80 or higher by Scouts Inc. with multiple first-contact sacks.

Very happy with this draft so far. I love the Gio pick. Perfect compliment to BJGE. Icky and James Brooks? Solid pick at safety. Not a superstar, but steady and effective.

One of my favourite players in the draft, another excellent pick to go along with Eiffert.

 
So how do Bengal fans feel about Bernard going into the season? Just noticed he was the highest RB ranked on the Cowboys board that was leaked. Looking for some info on him for Dynasty.

 
I feel good about him. I'm not sure he'll be the pure bell-cow, but I think the Bengals will be moving away from that aspect of their offense and he'll be a great fit for a short passing game. I tend to think the upside is eventually for him to haveBrian Westbrook type numbers (at least that's what I'm hoping for anyway).

:pickle: I like the Dunlap re-signing :) I gather that MJ93 turned down a similar offer and will play out to free agency. It will be interesting to see if he's able to get the kind of money he thinks he will at that time. Good that we kept one either way (and I tend to think that barring a total collapse by Johnson he's gone) - very reminiscent of the JoJo/Hall scenario. Really hard to but massive $$ at that position long term (for 1 year it's doable).

Are the Benglas going to have Gresham, Eifert and Charles on the field at the same time?

I know they've moved Charles to FB and there's tons of chatter about the two TE sets, but you could create some nice matchup problems with three mobile, receiving TEs on the field at the same time. Especially with AJ Green requiring attention.

I think the formation of Green, Gresham, Eifert with Charles (FB) and Giovanni (RB) coming out of the backfield is going to be very tricky for opposing defenses to cover when they decide to throw the ball. Those are 5 very good pass catching options Dalton is going to have at each of their positions. Can't wait to see it in action.

 
Not really fantasy relevant but do any Bengal homers know if Dre Kirkpatrick is likely to win the CB2 spot? How's he looking at camp.

One thing to note is that the Bengals play Nickel a lot. Jones played CB3 last year and was on the field for over 1/2 of the team's defensive snaps:

The depth of this team is really incredible IMO. Most exciting I've been coming into a season in 20 years.

Would've like to have seen a little more from the 1's on offense, but playing a top-tier team like the Falcons to a draw is a good sign.

A lot of the guys we cut are going to end up on other teams - hopefully we might be able to squeeze a couple extra 6th round draft picks out of this situation.

It looks like the base formation will be 2TE no fullback. On running downs, Charles replaces WR2 and you end up with the formation you're asking about, but Charles is basically a pure fullback in that set.

 
I've followed the Bengals for about 40 years now, and even when they were good in the 70s and 80s they were a fairly soft team. Not this team. Aside from the lack of a battering ram at RB, this is a nasty team.

I still feel guilty about it, but when Harrison ran his mouth about hitting guys low last year before the Bengals game only to see the Bengals take out Heath Miller by going low it felt like something big had changed in a good way.

I don't really believe in Dalton, but he may be good enough with the squad around him.

 
I know it is only 1 preseason game so far, but I hope to see some better things with Giovanni Bernard, I like his 1 yard rushing TD on 4th down, he really ran hard for a little guy, but the line really helped him on that one too, but other than that, I saw him run into his lineman a couple times and he should of picked up that 1st down on that pass play of 12-13 yards, but he tripped.

I would of liked to see more from the 1st team offense, but I loved how Gresham crushed Trufant early on in the game, a welcome to the league moment for Trufant. I think a lot of people are discounting what Gresham will do this year because of Eifert, but I think he will still have a really solid year.

I do like what I saw from the 1st team defense last night. I think they played pretty solid, besides that 1 screen pass to Harry Douglas. I love the addition of Harrison so far, brings a different toughness and leadership to the defense, that we were missing. I cant wait to watch this D-Line during the seaon, they might be the best in the league all around.

 
Sounds like there's a gpod chance Hawkins starts the yer on IR (with the return designation). This probably opens up a spot for Sanzenbacher to make the team. Could be interesting down the line when Hawkins returns. Think this will put pressure on Tate to perform and make better decisions in the interim.

They can take their time with Hawkins rather than rsh him back since they figure to use a lot more 2-TE sets this year.

Will be interesting to see the post-game review/practices on hard knocks this week :)

I'm going to be disappointed if the Bengals don't take advantage of the opportunity they have here to not just win the game, but to beat these guys up. Been a long time since it was the Steelers reeling and the Bengals were the better team with a good, tough defense.

 
Perfect opportunity for the Bengals to give it to the Steelers on National Television this Monday night.

No Pouncey or Foote. Shayne Graham was just signed by the Steelers too.

 
I was listening to Jay Mohr talk about having a franchise QB and linking that to making the SBowl. Yes, he thinks Flacco is one, as evidenced by winning play-off games on the road. He conveniently forgot Dilfer. His point was that he doesn't think Dalton is a franchise QB - he may be "OK" or "good", but not good enough to get to the Super Bowl. What do you guys think? When is there enough evidence one way or another?

1. I do like Jay Mohr, but I don't think he knows all that much about sports, he is a comedian with mediocre sports knowledge. He puts a funny twist on the everyday sports shows, that is why I listen to him, not for his sports knowledge.

2. I don't know exactly when there is enough evidence one way or another, but in order to at least be in the conversation as a franchise QB, you have to lead your team to at least a playoff win, something Dalton hasn't done yet. I think in order to get the needed respect from critics and media, they are and most likely always will be judged by if they win the super bowl or not. I don't think you have to go that far in order to be a franchise QB. I think Matt Ryan is a franchise QB, but he hasn't gotten his team to the super bowl.

 
When you think about the tough men who made the NFL what it is, and getting fired up for a huge game against a rival, only one name comes to mind: Katy Perry.

Or, not. But someone in the Bengals' office decided that Perry's hit "Roar" would work perfectly for their games, including as the song to introduce the team. Bengals? Roar? Get it? Yeah.

This was not thought out that well. There has to be some context. Metallica is fine. "Until It Sleeps" by Metallica just before NFL game is not. To the surprise of nobody, Bengals fans were quite unhappy with the pop star's anthem, which played before, during and after its home opener against Pittsburgh on Monday night.

It's a nice enough song if you're a 12-year-old girl, but I would have paid good money to see James Harrison's reaction when he heard it playing over the stadium speakers.

I listen to Mohr because while he obviously knows little about sports he does not take anything too seriously. Some of these guys get way too serious about their opinions without actually knowing too much at the same time.

Yeah I would expect that to be the case. I think one of the Bengals blogs indicated that you might see Harrison at end sometimes too.

This will be a stern test this week. I like the way Dalton settled down after his tough start, he was much better in the 2nd half. Wonder if any other teams in the NFL have 3 TD drives of 85-plus yards so far this season like the Bengals do.

So we win the most ridiculous game I've seen in a long time :)

1) I can no longer ##### about MarvinChallenges. He's apparently sold his soul to the Devil and now knows the exact perfect plays to throw challenge plays on.

2) I literally can give up on no game now this year. If we can win one like this (where to be honest the Packers decide to one-up us in the stupidity department and make what we did vs the Bears look like child's play) we can literally win any game. I'm not saying we will, I'm just saying there is no game that I think we can't win.

3) this is the perfect scenario for Dalton-hating Bengals fans. They are free to ignore that he regained his composure and led two long TD drives b/c the defense came through at the end. The Bengals now have 4 85-plus yard TD drives now this year (and 3 of those were 90-plus) which I will unscientifically guess lead the league. But the we win and Dalton's a bum crew can continue to beat the drum. I expect to hear this at least 10 more times this year though so I'm ready.

4) Our defense made Aaron Rodgers look bad. They are scary good now. And now they've smartened up to draw penalties (which they did with a couple of those bonehead PFs by the Pack). They just need to learn to play to the referees - some soccer players should come and give us acting lessons. You can ##### or you can play to the refs as they see the game, ridiculous as that is.

5) I still haven't processed that we won that game.

What a crazy and exciting game that was.

Defense played their asses off yesterday, the score doesn't reflect to how good they played against one of the best QB's in the game. I haven't checked any of the official stats or anything yet, but the defense had to have had at least 10 batted balls close to the D-Line. I don't know the last time I have seen so many batted balls in one game. Wasn't sure if it was because of Rodgers throwing motion or just great timing on the defenses part. They were putting pressure on Rodgers all day and I loved it.

Gio Bernard needs to get more touches, the guy looks ridiculously fast and is shifty with the ball in his hands.

Eifert was a non-factor yesterday, I love Gresham after the catch, except for his fumbling problems, but he is always fighting for that extra yard and is very tough to bring down.

I like what I saw from Sanu and Marvin Jones, didn't put up great numbers or anything, but they both produced with what they were given. Sanu was good after the catch too.

Between this game and the Reds taking care of business against the Pirates yesterday, it was a great day for Cincinnati sports.

 
I agree Sanu looked very good on the few targets he got. Eifert played less in this game than he has in previous weeks - he was only in on 54% of the snaps. Marvin Jones got a bump in play (that TD catch was a beauty).

I am curious what percentage of the snaps Gio got once we were down 16 points. It seems like maybe all but 5 or so.

Whitworth played the whole game which was good to see (it was even better to see the offensive line play much better in the last quarter and a half).

Harrison only played 5 snaps and Hunt was inactive. So much for them picking up the slack for Geathers being out for the season. Instead Dunlap and MJ93 got a big bump in snaps and rose to the occasion.
