Learned a new rule today
A rule which has never been enforced even once during my 35 years of watching soccer was enforced today, and wiped out a goal by Palace.

Funny how these things never come up during, say, Liverpool v City. Or after a free kick into row ZZ193 at the top of the stadium. It's always some small club, after they actually score.

Well, OK. Good I guess?

The timing for the first-ever enforcement is still stupid. Call it a million times week one after the new rule goes into effect and the free kicks aren't in the net. Let everyone know it's a thing that's actually going to be called. Don't ignore the rule for literally 1000s of games and then pick this moment to unveil it, years after the fact.

I watch a lot of soccer, but I know you see way more than I do. Have you ever seen this whistled before? Guys routinely mess with the wall and I've never seen it.

I'm just saying it's pretty hard for something to not be enforced for the time period you say when for 90% of it it wasn't an offence in the first place

Sure, ok. I get that, and you're right.

But whether it's 2 years or 3 years or 35 years it's still 1000s of games. That's kind of the point. Something that is NEVER called (and players mess with the wall all the time) is called for the first time in this moment?

Can't say that I've seen players "messing with the wall" much at all since the rule was in place, hence I've never seen this given either. I suppose the way we should handle it is to just let players start doing it more and more, then change a yard to four feet, an IFK to a corner, and declare the new rule an amazing success

And yeah, having just seen the incident I've not seen such blatant interference with a wall since the rule came in. Which is a bad rule and I have no idea why it came in, but can't just disregard it because you don't like it

I'm as far out on the limb as I'm going to go, and I'm arguing way more than I care (maybe I should have been a lawyer?), but there are incidents in that vid not whistled that should have been if the rule was being enforced consistently (IMO most of the goals involve a player breaking this rule).

Just call it a foul if you think he fouled him -- but don't cite this not-really-a-rule.

Switching gears... I knew they were on a run, but this is really impressive. For any club:

Crystal Palace's last 10 games have included Arsenal away, Liverpool away, Chelsea away, Spurs away, FA Cup semi-final vs Villa, FA Cup final vs Man City, Community Shield vs Liverpool. They are unbeaten in all those 10 games.

My main issue with your comments is calling Palace a small club. C’mon man!

And I don't understand the United lineup, so lets see what happens.

They played well. Very soft goal to give up but otherwise they were the better side slightly all game.
I watched the first 20 before I left to go play a game myself. From the radio announcers and the feedback I've seen they had chances just didn't convert. And the goal was terrible. Doubt Onana does better either. They need a keeper badly.

Is any one watching the Leeds Everton game? I have not watched but just checked in online to see what was going on.

Everton's stat line, at almost half time, reads: 0 shots on goal, 0 shots taken, 0 corner kicks, 35% possession

:sadbanana:

His work rate is something for Poch to behold! Such a harder worker than Sargent.

Oh wait, WRONG THREAD!!!???

LEEDS LEEDS LEEDS!!!

Although I am not sure that should have been called a handball and a PK. Just saw a video on my phone. Anyone confirm the call was correct?

I am not going to pretend I understand the rule because it appears to change meaning more often than what a "catch" is in the NFL.

What I saw clearly was:

The ball 100% hits his arm and not his body, and clearly blocked the shot.
The arm was NOT extended away from his body but hanging close in a normal fashion
He tried to get his chest in the way but could not in time.
Had his arm not hit the ball, it would have been through for a shot on goal (no way to tell how dangerous though).

In NewlyRetired's Law Book, this would be a PK since I don't care about intent, I only care that the arm blocked the ball and cost a possible scoring opportunity. I acknowledge again that I have no idea what the correct call here is though since I think arm position is suppose to come into play.

Ball hits Tarkowski's arm. Position looks natural enough, issue is that he is moving towards the ball and not in a stood still can do nothing situation. From my view it's fine but can see why some are livid with it

I saw more of the handball later last night. I think the thing that got him was moving his shoulder down, more of a side bend that put his arm into the path. Had he stayed more straight up it probably wouldn't have been given. By bending the way he did it appeared to move his arm to the ball. Still not sure I agree it should be given but I can see why it was and why Everton fans are upset.

But hey, wouldn't be the return of the European season without VAR controversy!

In Liverpool to catch the first Everton home match in the new stadium tomorrow. Spent my paycheck at the team store and now having a pint at the pub across the street enjoying the City loss. COYB!

Edit: Having a second pint surrounded by a bunch of crusty scousers. Stay tuned for more updates!
