🐎 *OFFICIAL 2022 Horse Racing Extravaganza Traveling Road Show Thread - Life Gettin' Better At Big Sandy* 🐎 (1 Viewer)

Looking at the end, Tawny Port (purple jersey, I think) moved off the rail because it looked like he had some horse left and the jockey probably didn't think it would open up like it did.  He ended up bumping with another horse as he was trying to go 4 wide.  I wonder if he would have had a chance if he stayed on the rail?  Was closing nicely until he ran into traffic with the horse that was 5 wide.

passing inside another horse at top speed is a highly counterintuitive activity for the most intuitively-stubborn higher animal of which i'm aware - never a given.

Yep, you’re the only reason Rich Strike was included on all my tickets.

:hifive:

wish i woulda listened to .... myself

so i love to do the tri keybox - it's my go to wager, especially on those big pool days, like the Derby.

now, had one (me?) just used that angle for yesterday - there were 10 horses that fit, and Richy was one.

Epi & Zandon were also in that lot, so ... if one loved either of them, they play them as the keybox over the 9 others.

for the $1 play, that will set ya back $268 - so ... using the angle, keying one of the faves, well ... that's a $14,500 profit.

the game works, sometimes - and when it hits like that, it's the most golden moment imaginable.

✌️

Right at the :23 mark, purple jersey comes out of the final turn into the straightaway and drifts away from the rail by just enough... the seas part right in front of Rich Strike right then as purple jersey makes a few other horses take it a bit wider, only Messier in his way after that drift. One deft move by Leone and it was done.

That early pace tired all the other horses out, but, Leone stalled #21 at the start so he could maneuver sideways behind all the other horses and beeline to the rail, happy to be in the back in the early stages. Leone kept #21 on his own pace while everyone else got caught up with #4 Summer Is Tomorrow's insanity. Seems like they all lost sight of the pace except for the one jockey that didn't care.

Crown Pride was right there with the #4 most of the way - that horse worked lights out, and spent a ton of time on the track leading up - he (CP) was on full friggin' throttle since he landed - was surprised to see him go so urgently - was like the two of 'em wanted to show that the UAE shippers meant biz this year ... they sure did, and that biz was giving us an old fashioned donnybrook up front - haven't seen pace like that since 5.5f specialists with a ton in the bank qualified.

they absolutely cooked Mess, who was squarely in front hitting the stretch - but, ferchrissakes, ol' Johnny V had nothing left ... i knew he would be out there early, but i'm very shuked by the strategy - JV had to know the pace was way too scorching to find anything left once the stretch was looming.  damn shame.

all credit to Epi & Zandy, they are clearly the cream of this crop, and they both ran huge yesterday - Simplification showed well, also.

Preakness is gonna be LIT - we gonna get Secret Oath, Early Voting (for more pace shennanigans) - i would expect a full 14 horse field, can't wait to see who the shooters are gonna be.

Monmouth ****ery

so i was under the impression they were running fixed odds down the shore ... uh, that's gonna be a no, dawg.

- was hot on this cat, best speed in the field by far, and he won by 7 lengths -

i plopped on him because at ZERO minutes to post he was at a ridiculous overlay of 5/2 - hedged my ### with place dough just in case ...

qtr mile in, he's stalking the lead pair, who are setting a brisk pace - then the odds appear ... he's now 4/5.

look, i seriously doubt my 20 spot tilted this   so, c'mon man ... wtf happened to fixed odds?

the second i hit "submit", the wagering closed ... so what should've been roughly $105 payout gets noodled to $64.

:deadhorse:

Let's be clear.  The dude that started the topic ripped on Bob Baffert.  Go read his first post.  It is a Kentucky Derby thread, right?  How is that not part of the conversation?

The same guy now says, "was he juiced?  i really don't care".  Well, otb_lifer, you seemed to care before.

Are we not allowed to bring that up?

was tied up earlier, didn't get a chance to drop the pick in here ...

needed the 17/1 #9 horse to bring this home for a $224 profit, and it was by a nose, if that

Paleo's Princess 👸

... and that's a wrap for today.

💰👍🐎

see ya tomorrow.

It's brought up. Now please drop it and stop talking about other posters and please keep it on the topic of horse racing and please stop derailing the thread.

Can the 80-1 shot repeat in the Preakness?  Of course he could but between him closing from off a hot pace and this one being a shorter race,  I'm not sure if he will have the time and space. 🐎           🐎

That last half furlong Strike had another gear that none of the other horses had. Just incredible burst of speed after being holed up in that cluster at the turn.

Really unbelievable

i had mentioned on Saturday that the majority of races were finishing down the middle of the track ... closers were getting a very fair shake, but, still - i saw most winners coming straight down Broadway.

the rail was temporarily shut for Richy, but Leon found the seam Tawny Port vacated, and zipped right up, saving ground.

he came up the rail, yes ... but once he establishrd his "giddyup" he veered out from the dead inside and got into some better/faster footing.

i don't think he came home blazing, but the jock had all his horse at that juncture ... the others, not so much.

Leon may have just piloted the greatest major stakes run we've ever seen ... i think it tops Bo-Rail.

If Epi comes out of the Derby in good form I think he should race in the Preakness. He’d be the favorite and his style is perfect for that race. Zandy looks more Belmont to me but I think they’d be in the tri again if they ran. The Derby horses who did run well have a huge edge on new shooters in the Preakness. They are conditioned. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the same 3 in the tri if they all go. Rich Strike even looked more dominant on the gallop out. We’ll find out fluke or not in 2 weeks

Shows you how good Epicenter’s race was..

To appreciate the toll of this wicked pace, just look at where the front-runners finished compared to all of Rich Strike’s slow-footed pals biding their time in the back.

The first seven horses to hit the quarter-mile mark finished: 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 18th and 20th.

The last eight horses at that quarter-mile point, including our new hero, finished: first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 14th (and you can disregard the 14th-place finish because that horse, Happy Jack, was rather unhappy as the race began and never got involved at any point).

The only horse near the vanguard early to survive the blistering pace and battle on in the stretch was Epicenter.

i ran across this breakdown of the splits ... Richy was the only sub :25 finisher - Mo, Simp, Zandy, Epi in that order behind him, in terms of quicks in that last qtr.

Mo ran himself into the picture, matching Richy/Tiz for the fastest giddyup hitting the stretch - all at the same 24.08 - pretty remarkable for all 3 to hit that same fig.  had 9 horses sub :25 for that portion, they all picked up those staggering, exhausted pieces.

Epi's fractions clicked up with each qtr, until the finish - indicative of that friggin' suicide mission the UAE cats were on ... yet he still damn near pulled this out.

grueling race, this was not the dogwalks we've been used to seeing past decade or so.

no more cheap speed due to points system? HA! we broke the cycle on Saturday ...

SiT goes out in 21.3 for his first, labors home in a glacial 35.5 for his last ... that animal was spent, to say the least.

the Rich Strike ride reminded me a lot of what Smith used to do on Zendaya.  but that Zendaya.  the seas parted for this horse in every needed spot and that move in the stretch off the rail to the right of that horse where he splits them to continue is crazy.  how this horse never had to really check is amazing.

One other note. I think the new starting gate was a home run. Much fairer for all horses. Because you didn’t have the rail horses breaking out to get out of the chute or the horses outside bolting in it might have been the cleanest start I’ve seen for a Derby. Everyone had a chance. Not the usual pinball

Just heard a live interview with Eric Reed on tvg. He said when he realized they were going to win that he grabbed his dad and yelled we are going to win the derby then “I guess I kinda passed out…I never saw him cross the finish line”

we can likely add Un Ojo, Blackadder, Skippylongstocking to the IN group - all very likely to hit the gate.

would love to see the full complement of 14, Richy & Secret Oath will take a ton of money, big underlays - sweetens the potential score(s).

Early Voting is primed for this one - another Cloud Computing strike for Brown ... if Epi goes i'm gonna beat the cold exacta to bloody mutha jumpin' hell.

we'll see about the rest.

as great as Richy's strike was for the game (and, man, did it need this kinda positive buzz - the most "viral" horse evah), i'm not buying him just yet - love that it happened for the jock & connections, they deserve every bit of good fortune they've earned - GB those fellas 🙏

Waiting on line for my Dunkin Donuts coffee and bagel (Long line)

Shooting my TVG free bet.

Ok, Hong Kong Happy Valley 5th race.

$2 Ex box  1/8/10/12...$24 total.

(yes, i know, I need help)🤣

See ya at the window 💰🏇

Epi is IN - emerges from the Derby in good shape, here we go ...

🐎

The horse looks great,” Fiske said. “He almost looks like he never ran. He was tugging at the rider this morning just cruising along through the stretch.”

One offshore racebook made Epicenter the 5-2 favorite in its Preakness futures.

“It was always, like, we’re going,” Fiske said. “It was just a matter of whether he, the horse, wanted to go. He looks like he wants to go, so we’ll go.”

Zandon, the third-place finisher from the Derby, is still a possibility for the Preakness. Trainer Chad Brown said Wednesday morning he still had not decided whether to send the Blue Grass (G1) winner to Baltimore. So as it stands with Rich Strike, Epicenter and Simplification expected to be entered, three of the top four finishers from the Kentucky Derby will be rematched.

For Fiske and the rest of the Epicenter team, it will be a chance for redemption after 80-1 long shot Rich Strike poached a Derby victory that looked certain until the last 10 strides of the race.
