00's Mixtape Draft (1 Viewer)

On Abrantes, I really liked the songs by Exploding Hearts, Bouncing Souls, and of course Secret Machines. Prolly my favorite mix thus far, but I'm only through 5 so far. I've liked all of them. As I wound up importing a bunch of duplicate songs into my itunes library, does anyone know any easy way to permanently delete songs? I know that Itunes can find dups and that I can delete them from my library, but they wind up re-appearing later as the MP3's stay on my hard drive. Deleting on both itunes and folder view is the way I do it now and it's a PITA.
So this may not be the best way, but it is how I do it:First I put the downloaded mix folders into my iTunes music folder. Then I create a playlist in itunes called "NV's mix" or whatever, and drag the folder there so that all the songs from the mix are in the playlist, and only those songs are in the playlist. Then if the mix creator didn't already uniquely tag their files, I select all and change their album name or genre or whatever to "NV's mix," in order to distinguish those music files from the duplicates already on my computer. To delete duplicates I then go to the main library view and search for "NV's mix" - only the songs from the mix show up. I select and delete the songs that I already have or don't want to keep. Since I am deleting from the main library and the songs are in my main iTunes folder, iTunes asks me if I want to delete the files as well, and I say yes.Having the tunes in the playlist also makes it easier for uploading them to my iPod, as I just drag the playlist onto my iPod.
Dangit- all I had to do was change my iTunes folder to the actual folder I am using for my music library. Thankfully, it didn't re-configure my superior filing system. I wish I had done this years ago. Thanks for the help.

I have mine and TUpside's coming up today. I had it all ready but they sprung a new laptop on me the other day, which is nice and all but I had a lot of crap I needed to get in order.

Nice!! Good job with the table scraps, ODR. Surprised you didn't go for the obvious Bravery song, and I love seeing Bob Mould on there. Downloading...
Hope you like. I'm a big Bob Mould fan. Most of the stuff he put out in the 00's was meh, but the Body of Song album is great IMO. Once you get past the fact that Bob Mould is doing electronic stuff, it's very enjoyable. While I lean toward rock and electronic music, two of my favorite songs from the decade were country and folk (last 2 tracks - Old Timers and Golden). Go figure.

Thoroughly enjoyed NV's mix.

Can't do it. Heard the autotune and almost hurled.

Abrantes' Mix

Real Good Songs I already knew well

1. Dinosaur Jr, "Almost Ready"

Great openener.

2. ...And You will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, "It Was There That I Saw You"

The most memorable song from this great album.

3. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, "Parallel or Together?"

5. Wolf Parade, "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts"

6. Les Savy Fav, "Hold On To Your Genre"

7. Queens of The Stone Age, "Sick, Sick, Sick"

So many good QOTSA songs/

10. Okkervil River, "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe"

Even though I've heard this song dozens of times before, for a half second when it started I got really excited because I thought it was Jimmy Eat World (The Middle) and Jimmy Eat World was briefly awesome. Anyway, this is one of the only Okervil River songs I still like.

14. The New Pornographers, "Letter From An Occupant"

Neko

17. Broken Social Scene, "Stars and Sons"

18. The Unicorns, "Sea Ghost"

As much as I like Islands/Clues, these guys need to get back together. I don't think it's gonna happen.

15. The Exploding Hears, "Sleeping Aides & Razorblades"

Great song.

My Favourite 00s Songs by these Artists:

23. The Secret Machines, "Nowhere Again"

4. TV On The Radio, "Wolf Like Me"

If I had taken a TVOTR song, it would have been this, "Staring at the Sun" or "Family Tree"

11. Guided by Voices, "Chasing Heather Crazy"

Such a good song.

12. Midlake, "Roscoe"

Their peak. I still haven't listened to their new one.

13. The Futureheads, "Hounds of Love"

Anyone who likes this (it's my favourite Futureheads song, despite being a cover - not sure what that says about them), the "Wolves at the Door Remix" is good as well

24. LCD Soundsystem, "All My Friends"

One of my very favourite songs from the 00s, not sure why I didn't have it on my list. I have a 4 minute single edit of this song that's pretty great for mixes.

New Songs/Haven't heard in a while

8. Man Man, "Mister Jung Stuffed"

This was definitely different

9. Sleater-Kinney, "Jumpers"

Had this on my iPod but don't remember why, apparently I've listened to it a few times before. Anyway, it's good.

16. Bouncing Souls, "Night Train"

Goes really well with the Exploding Hearts song, very similar feel.

19. The Avett Brothers, "Paranoia in Bb Major"

Good song. I like their new album better :goodposting:

20. The Wrens, "Ex-Girl Collection"

Somehow, I don't think I've ever listened to this band before.

21. Sonic Youth, "Unmade Bed"

Yes, this is a Sonic Youth song.

22. Portishead, "The Rip"

I like this more than I remembered, for the most part I don't get this band but this is good.

This one has the high probability of being my favorite. Several songs that I already like and a few bands I think I will. Never been a QoSA fan though and the selections I've already heard here haven't changed that.

You music drafters are INSANE. I love it. I'm going to start DLing now.
You gonna make your last 8 picks in the 09 Desert Island draft?
Can I still?????? Thought I was forcefully and well-deservedly given the cease and desist in that draft due to my unexpected and unannounced absence from the thread, FFA, FBG, computers and my home in general. For the 2nd time today(1st to you), my apologies for the inconvenience. So, can I?

Sure. Music nerds are a forgiving bunch.

rd 28 -- RZA -- Dead Birds (not from Afro Samurai. Same title, from the Ghost Dog soundtrack) -- :49 (no link available)
I was going through this mix track by track, but then my computer quit, so I'll try to summarize. The rap was 50/50 for me. I really liked the Roots and Danger Doom songs, the other couple rap songs, not as much.

A lot of new songs on here I liked as well. Specifically the songs by Burning Airlines, Gutter Twins, Mercury Program and Citizen Cope.

I knew about half the songs before listening (Modest Mouse, Thermals, Pinback, QOTSA, Interpol, Death Cab, BSS, Spoon , etc..). My favourite Pinback song, one of my favourite Thermals songs - I Turn My camera On, Autopilot and I Turn My Camera On all sounded good in the context of the mix.

I haven't listened to the Les Savy Fav or Dismemberment Plan songs in a long time, both are really good.

A couple of the heavier songs would have been better as instrumentals for me, the vocals didn't do anything to improve them IMO.

Overall, I liked that there were a half dozen new songs I liked on here and a few that I hadn't heard in a while as well.
:lmao:

Listened to my first two mixes today first up:

Abrantes

I knew most of the bands\songs on this mix, but that isn't a bad thing. I think Abrantes sniped me more than anyone in this draft (and other drafts as well)

1. Dinosaur Jr, "Almost Ready"

love this song and the entire album really. Comeback artist of the decade imo. 5 stars

2. ...And You will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, "It Was There That I Saw You"

I never really got into this band, but this one is ok. certainly not terrible. 3 stars

3. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, "Parallel or Together?"

love these guys. I think Ted Leo is the closest thing there is to Elvis Costello from my generation4 stars

4. TV On The Radio, "Wolf Like Me"

This is the song that really got me into TVOTR. I'm kind of glad you took this because it would have been a tough choice between this one and Radiohead in the 1st round. 5 stars

5. Wolf Parade, "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts"

This would have been my 2nd or 3rd choice by this band. 4 stars

6. Les Savy Fav, "Hold On To Your Genre"

Know the band, but not their earlier stuff. "Pots&Pans" was on my shortlist, but just missed the cut 3 stars

7. Queens of The Stone Age, "Sick, Sick, Sick"

not one of my favorite QotSA songs, but still decent. 3 stars

8. Man Man, "Mister Jung Stuffed"

These guys are great. I wanted to take "Engrish Bwudd" but I ran out of time 3 stars

9. Sleater-Kinney, "Jumpers"

I've never been able to get into Sleater-Kinney. I know it's crazy, but just not my thing. 1 star

10. Okkervil River, "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe"

Another snipe. I didn't know much about this band until one of the DID drafts a few years back great song. 4 stars

11. Guided by Voices, "Chasing Heather Crazy"

This is a newish band for me that I need to explore more. I like this one quite a bit 4 stars

12. Midlake, "Roscoe"

And... yet another snipe. This is by far their best song. 5 stars

13. The Futureheads, "Hounds of Love"

Haven't listened to much from these guys, but I liked this one even though it's a cover 4 stars

14. The New Pornographers, "Letter From An Occupant"

Fantastic. not much else to say about these guys. 5 stars

15. The Exploding Hearts, "Sleeping Aides & Razorblades"

yet another snipe. I wanted to put this one next to "The Bleeding Heart Show." I always wondered how big these guys could have been... What a tradgedy. 5 stars

16. Bouncing Souls, "Night Train"

Never heard these guys before. Didn't care for it. 2 stars

17. Broken Social Scene, "Stars and Sons"

love the band, this song is not my favorite though 2 stars

18. The Unicorns, "Sea Ghost"

New band for me. I'm not a big Islands fan either though, so this was below average for my tastes 2 stars

19. The Avett Brothers, "Paranoia in Bb Major"

Love the banjo on this one. how can you go wrong with good banjo? I wanted to take "Die Die Die", but again ran out of time 4 stars

20. The Wrens, "Ex-Girl Collection"

these guys are pretty good. I need to listen to more of them 3 stars

21. Sonic Youth, "Unmade Bed"

I feel the same way about these guys as I do about Sleater-Kinney. Never been able to listen to them 1 star

22. Portishead, "The Rip"

Portishead makes me want to cut myself, so I don't listen to them much. That said, I do like them quite a bit 3 stars

23. The Secret Machines, "Nowhere Again"

I somehow have never listened to these guys. I like this one a lot though so I will have to explore further. What album should I start with? 5 stars

24. LCD Soundsystem, "All My Friends"

One of the best songs from a top 10 album of the entire decade. 5 stars

Great mix, just a few throwaways for me. This one will stay on the iphone (minus SK and SY).

Overall 4.5 stars

gotta get back to work now, but I'll try to to Professor S's review later tonight.

OK guys, I think my ibook is finally dead. It's been having issues for the last several months. I've been mostly using a work laptop for the last couple of months, but I'd turn to my trusty mac to stay on long enough to create a playlist, dl an album, or check out some pron. I moved recently, and I've tried about 30 times to fire her up since the move and no go. :goodposting:

I went ahead and created a playlist on lala. Not ideal, but hope it does the trick:

http://www.lala.com/#memberplaylist/-82865...gToken=1H821863

I don't have much of a theme, other than a lot of these bands are the ones who've gotten me interested in new music over the last five years or so (special thanks to the hoof!). Most of the music nuts probably have most of this stuff and I don't know #### about flow, but I gave it a shot. Enjoy!

P.S. Let me know if there are any problems.

P.S.S. Also, not sure if the time worked out. Possible I went over because I noticed some differences in my iPod track lengths and the listings on allmusic.

:goodposting:
REALLY liked this mix as well. I liked the hip-hop/rap songs, as I've never heard of any of them. I think there were only a couple of the songs I didn't like b/c they were a little repetitive, but overall this mix was the ####.

MIA = not good. Another one here that doesn't understand all the critical fawning.
Maybe it's because you're too old? Also, if anyone listens to my mix, please let me know. The need-for-approval suspense is killing me.
:wall: Noticed tonight that my mix had 12 downloads. :popcorn:Seems to be that these mix tape drafts are picking up steam. More of the drafters are getting mixes up, more people downloading, etc.. IMO these drafts are one of the best things that's happened to the FFA.

I'd agree.

Future Draft Options

1) - KP's Mystery Mix (KP to Commish)

60's Mixtape (No Commish volunteered yet)

Pre 60's Mixtape (Uncle Humuna to commish?)

Desert Island 00's Album Draft (Complete Decade) (No Commish volunteered yet)

Desert Island Billboard No.1 Album Draft (JML to Commish)

Any other draft format people can get enough drafters for.

I'd love to but you didn't put it in order and two of the files are broken. You should order them and reupload it.
Trifles.

How do I put them in order? I guess the order doesn't really matter.

Damn it. I don't think I know how to do this, either. Just looked at my folder and they're alphabetized.

To keep the files from coming down alphabetized, change the file name to have 01, then 02, then 03, etc at the beginning of the songs in the order you wish for them to appear.

http://www.mediafire.com/?z2nzummtgmdNo theme for this mix--just songs from the decade that I like. I tried to order them with some semblance of flow and separating genres to some degree.

01 LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge

02 *****'s Basement - 21st Century Pop Song

03 A Place to Bury Strangers - To Fix The Gash In Your Head

04 Autolux - Turnstile Blues

05 TV on the Radio - Staring At The Sun

06 The Notwist - One With The Freaks

07 Cloud Cult - Take Your Medicine

08 The Go-Betweens - Darlinghurst Nights

09 The Wrens - Happy

10 Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet

11 The Veils - Jesus For The Jugular

12 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!

13 Ike Reilly - Last Time

14 McLusky - To Hell With Good Intentions

15 Frank Black - Threshold Apprehension

16 The National - Abel

17 Silver Jews - Punks In The Beerlight

18 The Glands - I Can See My House From Here

19 My Morning Jacket - The Way That He Sings

20 Neko Case - Deep Red Bells

21 The Buttless Chaps - Water By The Wayside

22 Hem - When I Was Drinking

I guess I have to retag the songs? Put "X" as album for all of them and renumber the individual tracks to get them in order?
Not sure you have to change the album name. Assuming your filenames are "Now We Can See.mp3", "The General Specific.mp3", "Black.mp3", etc.I would change the filenames to "01 Now We Can See.mp3", "02 The General Specific.mp3", "03 Black.mp3", etc.

That should do the trick for someone who wants to download the RAR file, throw it in a folder, and run that folder on a player.

The only downside is that the files now all contain that number at the beginning - but even my old Archos 504 and my Droid could then play the songs in the correct order.

The other options are for the person to setup a playlist (that is what I did for NV's mix) or for someone to use an MP3 tag editor to get them in the correct order.

(Great MP3 Tag editor is MP3 Tag)

I see what you're saying. Thanks. I'm going to reupload it in a while. Digging the "flow."
