The Curious Case of Bryce Brown by David_Wyatt on Mar 31, 2012 4:47 PM EDTI recently posted up my final mock draft of the season, one of the selections focused on former Tenneessee and Kansas State running back Bryce Brown. A highly regarded recruit that has been forgotten and recycled like yesterdays newspapers.I think every football fan likes a good story and with Bryce Brown, there is a story and a half. First and foremost he is a prospect for the 2012 NFL draft, he likely will be selected in the 6th or 7th round if at all. He has bagage and he is a complete mystery. He could be a complete waste, or he could make one General Manager look like an absolute genius. So lets go back to the start and focus on how we got here.Bryce Brown was and still is one of the most heralded high school football players in history. He finished his high school career with 7,209 yards inclusing a 2,000+ Sophmore campaign. He won the 2008 Hall Trophy award which is pretty much the high school equivalent of the Heisman trophy. He was highly regarded as the best running back to come out of Kansas since Barry Sanders. However this is where it all starts to unravel. Bryce's recruiting was an absolute farce; anyone who follows college recruiting closely will remember this as 'The Decision', before LeBron James and ESPN ever thought up the ridiculous idea. He had what you can only describe as a manager in Brian Butler, who sold news in relation to his workouts and the recruiting process on his own personal website for montly or yearly subscriptions. This led to the NCAA launching an investigation into Bryce's amateur status as a student athlete in High School Bryce verbally committed to the University of Miami but continued to take visits and hesitated to sign his letter of intention. He was a Diva, he wanted the attention. He said he would not sign a letter of intent on National Signing day and would instead hold a separate announcement on the 16th of March 2009.The problem was that Miami's scholarship offer expired on February 18th, and they would not re-issue another letter. Miami is a proud school who I believe didn't want to pander to the ego of a high school senior who seemed to be played by the puppet master Brian Butler. Eventually after much hype and much criticism, Bryce signed with Lane Kiffin and the Volunteers. In 2009 Bryce started to show why he was one of the most heralded high school recruits of the last decade. He had 4.3 speed with power in his 200+lb frame. He had the patience, the ability to catch out of the backfield and by all accounts the work ethic on the practise field to improve. He finished the season with 460 yards on 101 carries for a 4.6 yard average per carry and three touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 137 yards for 13.7 yards a catch and the single score. At the end of the 2009 season, Lane Kiffin bolted for USC and Derek Dooley took over the reigns at Tennessee. Brown managed the whole off-season program however left practise on the first day of Spring. He remained enrolled through the whole Spring semester before transferring to Kansas State in August to join his Brother Arthur who had transferred to Kansas State from Miami. Tennessee refused to release him from his scholarship so he had to support himself for the entire 2010 season which he sat out in accordance with NCAA rules. In a Yahoo sports exclusive in 2011, Bryce Brown was one of a number of players named in a report alleging student athletes received benefits which violated NCAA rules from booster Nevin Shapiro. Shapiro is currently imprisoned for orchestrating a $930 million Ponzi Scheme. After just three carries at Kansas State, Bryce Brown left the Kansas State football team. With two years of eligibality remaining, Bryce has decided to enter the 2012 draft early. I've always been impressed with Bryce when he is just playing football. The problem is that he has never just been able to play football. He's always had some form of distraction.Bryce is 20 years old and as I mentioned at the start. He will either fall off the face of the football planet or make a GM look like a genius.
Kellen Moore. Seriously.Any particular players you're hoping we pursue as a UDFA? I'm thinking Ryan Steed... very surprised he wasn't picked.
Sounds like Ryan Leaf. Remember the game he had the 5 TO and then got into with a teammate in the locker room? Didn't want to put any responsibility on himself. They absolutely killed Burfict in a recent discussion on ESPN. Dilfer went so far as to say that there are two typs of players in the locker room, one that breaths life into it and one that sucks it all out. He said in talking to the ASU people Burfict falls into the latter BIG TIME. Selfish, "Me" player on the field and off. Plays undisciplined and takes no responsibility for the foolish penalties. Then he fails the drug test and runs 5+ sec 40 at the Combine. I'm all about a crazy LB but the negative energy stuff is a big turn off.
That Owusu guy WR from Stan and I would like to see them get Keenum if possible. I'd love to have a list of players in front of me that didn't go drafted. There should be a few good value pick ups there.Any particular players you're hoping we pursue as a UDFA? I'm thinking Ryan Steed... very surprised he wasn't picked.
Owusu had 2-3 concussions last year - that's why he didn't get drafted. That Owusu guy WR from Stan and I would like to see them get Keenum if possible. Unlike years past, it is oh so lovely to see almost consensus seriousHow can anyone have any issues with this draft? Awesome job IMO!!Great draft.
as we discuss our picks this year.I'm amazed that Lombardi gave the Eagles the worst grade in the division at B-.Ok, it is Lombardi. I'm not amazed.Eagles had at worst an A- draft.Unlike years past, it is oh so lovely to see almost consensus seriousHow can anyone have any issues with this draft? Awesome job IMO!!Great draft.

Just like the last pick in a fantasy league (aside from a kicker pick).... swing for the fences. Else why draft him - sign as a UDFA.Go big or go home. That's what Round 7 should be all about.I know nothing about this guy.ETA: From the description on ESPN...sounds like a perfect high upside 7th round pick thoughWow talk about RAW - Brice Brown should be interesting to watch this preseason...Best draft ever?
Im sorry, how is he NOT Kafka 2.0? Late round small'er school QB with lots of upside. Seriously, how is he any different than the day we drafted Kafka? At this point I'll take it. He's not Kafka 2.0. Not as mobile but a bigger guy, stronger arm with better pocket sense under pressure. Clearly not a walk in the door stud but at this point in the draft, give me an upside QB that can learn from one of the best QB gurus. No one else is as appealing or valuable. At 6'5", 245lb and not mobile, he is clearly different than any QB we've had here in a VERY long time.
THat would mean Kafka or a rookie would be the backup QB. I dont see itI think Edwards is gone if he doesn't win the back up job.eagles are taking cousins. not a fan at all, but has been good draft so far. would have rather taken the ot massie that felledit: foles.. also not a fan I guess we are dumping kafkaI can't see us keeping all four: vick, edwards, kafka and foles. so who is out?
Care to elaborate on why DRC is not a starter for a contender?Care to elaborate on why you "hate" Foles?LOVED our first three picks. Absolutely LOVED them. Hate Foles. But not surprised they took him.Still need a DB to compete, DRC is not a starting caliber CB for a contender.
I know that was the reason but I think he'd be worth the risk especially now that rosters are expanding from 75-90 for TC and all. You can take extra risks now.Owusu had 2-3 concussions last year - that's why he didn't get drafted. That Owusu guy WR from Stan and I would like to see them get Keenum if possible. Kafka was a very poor man's Kirk Cousins coming out. Very little upside.Im sorry, how is he NOT Kafka 2.0? Late round small'er school QB with lots of upside. No thank you. Guy can't throw at all. It's beyond me how LSU won so many games with that guy at QB. I watched him all through college. If the guy ever makes it he's a 3rd QB at best. He basically another Tarvaris Jackson.I'll throw another QB name in the mix. From a raw ability and skill set, I could see Jordan Jefferson from LSU being brought in as he could fit the Vick mold and run a similar offense.

Not sure why you're asking me to elaborate on something I didn't say.
Ive hated every Eagles draft I can remember ... until this one. Pretty amazing that every Eagles fan is only coplaining about our 4th round project QB and 6'8 312 project OT in the 5th.We should be burning couches people, this is a day to rememberNonsense. Philly had him in for a visit, they didn't pull this selection out of thin air. It's the 5th round, I love how you understand their draft board and the value they see better then they do. The story of this draft is their first three picks, if they can realistically contribute, which everyone seems to be categorically in agreement of, then they significantly upgraded a defense that showed us NOTHING last year. Some of us did know Heremans and Kelce and applauded their selections. There is no value at this point for Kelly that's all.Obviously their scouting department liked him since he was one of the 30 pre draft visits that came to NovaCare.http://skinnypost.co...delphia-eagles/Reading he didn't get invited to the combine because he was considered to be an UDFA and had a playing weight of 300lbs so many scouts considered him to be undersized. Then he bulked up to 321 for Purdue's pro day and was impressive (re: a workout warrior). He's a major project, but in 3 years or so, if he can bulk up more, he could be a replacement for Peters.6'8" , 304 lbs.. King Dunlap like....LOLNFL.com's draft tracker doesn't even have height/weight listed for him. Unreal.I have no idea who Kelly is. None.Uh...Kelly is a UDFA candidate, not a 5th rounder. :(
I didn't know who Todd Heremans was either, or didn't think much of the Kelce pick. Sorry, but I'm going to trust Hoawrd Mudd's judgement, seemed to do a good job last year.
Also he's A HUGE EAGLES FAN!!!If anyone has the time, the Eagles have two videos up of Vinny Curry (one press conference and one where he goes in studio). I'm already a huge fan of this guy. Great character. Big thumbs up for this draft. Can't wait for the season.
Shane P. Hallam @ShanePHallam[*] ReplyApparently the Eagles signed UDFA Chris Polk.
Where did you hear this.Apparently the Eagles signed UDFA Chris Polk.

Reid said he didn't want to get into a bidding war for Brown so they took him. Not sure why they just didn't take Polk though. Only have a limited amount of money you can spend to sign these UDFAs.As I posted in the Rookie FA thread, the Polk signing is intruiging from a fantasy standpoint. For a highly productive and seemingly talented guy that went undrafted, he's entering a fantastic situation on a high scoring team with a stud RB and no clear cut backup. He'll battle 5'7" Dion Lewis and Bryce Brown for the spot. Probably a medical red flag but very strange to see a guy like Brown get drafted and not Polk and then go to the same team.

Take that, Jacksonville!Kentucky P Ryan Tydlacka to sign with Philadelphia Eagles.
Punters and Kickers are people and having feelings too......Take that, Jacksonville!Kentucky P Ryan Tydlacka to sign with Philadelphia Eagles.
If Harris keeps his head on he'd be steal. They even hit the UDFAs out the park. Cliff Harris and Polk --- both worth a flyer. A+ draft. Kudos to all.
Review so far who has signed UDFA wise for The Eagles.Chris Polk – RB – WashingtonIf Harris keeps his head on he'd be steal. They even hit the UDFAs out the park. Cliff Harris and Polk --- both worth a flyer.
