NFL Network Fan text vote had who had the strongest draft with some choices and Eagles were one of them. 39% the winner of Strongest draft goes too (I can't believe I'm even saying this) YOUR PHILADELPHIA EAGLES!!!!!!

Pay no attention to Mike Lombardi when it comes to the Eagles. He has a major chip on his shoulder with them after being let go in the FO early in Reid's tenure. I've heard him enough on Bill Simmons podcast to know he's a pompous jerk. When he said that the reason Asomugha went to Philly was because they paid him the most, I knew anything else out of his mouth would be a complete waste of time.Other than Peter's Achillies, this offseason had been an A

Roseman did a great job in this draft. I really liked how they gave up their 4th to pick up Cox and then moved down to reacquire a 4th that allowed them to draft Boykins. Got their guy with their tradeup and seemingly loss nothing with the trade downs. Great job.

Eagles reportedly add 7 undrafted free agents

By Daily News Staff

Even before the draft ended, teams were working the phones to line up undrafted free agents.

According to reports, the Eagles have agreed to terms with seven players already -- Miami tight end Chase Ford; Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris; UMass tight end Emil Igwenagu; Tulsa wide receiver Damaris Johnson; Washington running back Chris Polk; Syracuse safety Phillip Thomas; and Arizona State wide receiver Aaron Plufgrad.

RB Bryce Brown

The team has not confirmed any of the signings to this point.

The most interesting name among them is Polk, whose numbers are eye-popping – 4,049 rushing yards in his three-year career, second-most in school history. He ran for 1,341 yards last season and caught 29 passes for 324 yards. He had 15 touchdowns.

Some draft analysts had Polk going as high as the second round and no lower than the fourth, but injury concerns had teams shy away from him. According to the Seattle Times, Polk dislocated his left shoulder two games into the 2008 season and then had season-ending surgery. He had a torn left labrum in 2009, having surgery after the season. He'd also had arthroscopic knee surgery shortly before the 2011 season. There also was a report of a hip injury.

"I will just have to go out there and show them I have a lot of great football left in me," Polk told NFLDraftScout.com. "I know teams are concerned about my shoulder, but I also heard somebody say something about a degenerative hip, and there is just no truth to that. I had labrum surgery on the shoulder a year ago and it didn't slow me down last season."

Polk chose the Eagles over the Redskins.

He could have returned for another year at Washington, but decided to enter the draft after his junior season. According to reports, his performance at the Senior Bowl causes some questions among draft analysts, but he rebounded at the school’s Pro Day.

"Of course I would have preferred to be drafted and drafted high," Polk told NFLDraftScout. "But the main thing now is that I am with a great offensive team and I will get my opportunity to show what I can do in the NFL …

Polk would join LeSean McCoy, Dion Lewis, Graig Cooperand seventh-rounder Bryce Brown as the running backs on the roster.

Among the other players:

· Ford is 6-6, 245 and spent two seasons at Miami after playing in junior college. He started six games as a senior. He finished with 16 receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns in his 21 games as a Hurricane.

· Harris was an All-American for Oregon in 2010, but was suspended for part of last season and eventually dismissed from the team for a variety of legal issues. According to reports, he began collecting a substantial number of traffic citations, including driving while uninsured, speeding and driving without a license.

· Igwenagu was selected first-team all-CAA last season when he had 38 receptions for 375 yards and three touchdowns. He was a two-year captain for the Minutemen.

· Johnson, who also returns kicks, is another player with off-the-field issues. He was suspended near the start of the 2011 season after being charged with embezzlement for only playing $14 for $2,600 worth of merchandise from a store where his girlfriend worked. He pleased guilt and got a one-year deferred sentence. In 2010, he set an NCAA record for all-purpose yards with 7,796 and career kickoff return yards with 3,417.

· Thomas led the Syracuse defense in tackles and led the Big East in interceptions with six. He was suspended late in the season for an undisclosed violation of athletic department policy and decided to enter the draft after the suspension.

· Plufgrad is 5-10, 183 and had his most productive season as a season when he moved outside. He caught 44 passes for 665 yards and five TDs, starting all 13 games. He originally began at Oregon, before transferring. He is the son of a coach.

Draft grades from the experts.

What they're saying about the Eagles

Here's a roundup of what the national media are saying about the Eagles' draft:

John Czarnecki of FoxSports.com gives the Eagles a B:

Fletcher Cox can anchor the interior of Philadelphia's wide-nine approach with its pass rushers. Cal linebacker Mychal Kendricks was the second-best middle linebacker in a 4-3 scheme. Kendricks has some injury issues, but is a rock-solid football player. Georgia cornerback Brandon Boykin can handle the slot, while defensive end Vinny Curry had 26 1/2 sacks at Marshall. Curry is a street kid from New Jersey who has turned around his life despite a learning disability. He has tremendous upside. ... Of course, Reid couldn't help himself with the pick of Arizona quarterback Nick Foles, who broke Drew Brees' records at Westlake High in Austin, Texas. Unlike Michael Vick, Foles has feet of cement, but he does have very good arm strength.

ESPN's Mel Kiper gives the Eagles an A for needs, an A- for value and an A overall:

One of the best drafts in terms of lining up needs and getting guys at spots where I didn't think they'd still be around. They moved up to get Fletcher Cox, an immediate starter. Mychal Kendricks is a perfect fit, and at No. 46, a really good value. The Eagles look a lot better up the middle after this weekend. If Vinny Curry came off the board really early in the second round, nobody would have been surprised, so to get him at No. 59 is a steal. Nick Foles has the upside of an NFL starter, and Andy Reid could turn him into something. Brandon Boykin is my No. 9-ranked corner, so I love the value as a fourth-rounder. I thought they might get a tackle earlier, but it's hard to quibble given the value they got with every pick early on.

Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com gives the Eagles a B+:

The Eagles landed three good defensive players with their first three picks, including top pick Fletcher Cox. They had to improve that side of the ball. After that, they picked up some quality players in the latter rounds. It was a good weekend for the Eagles.

Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com gives the Eagles a B+:

It's safe to say Andy Reid and Howie Roseman approached this draft with defense in mind. The best four picks (Cox, Kendricks, Curry, Boykin) play on Juan Castillo's side of the ball, and at least two of them are Week 1 starters. Boykin could make it a trifecta if he unseats slot corner Joselio Hanson and the nickel package counts. Surrendering picks 114 and 172 to slide up three first-round spots for Cox seems like a lot, but the Eagles made an offsetting move by dropping eight selections in round two and adding pick 123 in a trade with Green Bay. The late-rounders were impressive as well. McNutt has requisite size and straight-line speed, and college tackle Washington is a potential future starter at guard. While this draft group fell just shy of an "A" grade, it makes Philadelphia's roster considerably more impressive, particularly on "D."

Tony Pauline of SI.com lists 11 steals from the draft, and three are Eagles picks:

The Eagles' desire to acquire Cox was well documented before the draft. The fact they gave little away to move up three slots and choose him makes this a huge coup for the organization.

Clark Judge of CBSSports.com thinks the Eagles' draft made sense:

Then there's Philadelphia, a club intent on returning to the playoffs. It made four of its first five choices defenders -- with the Eagles jumping up to take defensive tackle Fletcher Cox with the first pick. That's the urgency you should have when you blow five fourth-period leads, something the Eagles and Dallas had in common last season.

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy was 'overplayed' last year

LeSean McCoy is just 23 years old, but Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid said it's probably about time the team backs off on the amount of touches per game it gives him.

"I probably overplayed (LeSean) McCoy a little bit, even though he doesn't want to hear that. As he continues to get older and have the number of reps under his belt that he does, you'll want to back off the number of reps that he does," Reid said at a news conference Saturday after the draft, according to the team's official website.

McCoy started 15 games for the Eagles and carried the ball 273 times for 1,309 yards and a league-best 17 touchdowns in 2011. He also caught 48 passes for three touchdowns and 315 yards.

McCoy is in the final year of his rookie contract and is scheduled to make $615,000 next season, but he and the team have failed to come to an agreement on terms of an extension.

Reid noted that he would have liked to have gotten the ball in backup Dion Lewis' hands more often last season. Lewis had 23 carries for one touchdown and 102 yards -- although most of those took place in Week 17, when the Eagles had already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Philadelphia picked up Kansas State running back Bryce Brown in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Brown played one season at Tennessee in 2009, amassing 460 yards with three touchdowns on 101 carries. He then transferred to Kansas State, where he carried the ball only three times for 16 yards.

... homer alert

If drafted to different teams, each of these players could be starting Week 1 of this NFL season:

Cox, Kendriks (Eagles), Curry, Boykin

Thats a lot of starters, ESPEICALLY for the Eagles. I cant remember the last time we drafted this many Week 1 ready players

funny little note. The Kolb trade has now run it's course, and this is what it ended up being. For Kevin Kolb, the Eagles got Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Vinny Curry, and Brandon Boykin. Not too shabby for the Eagles front office there.

Haven't commented on the draft yet. Everyone else summed it up pretty well. They did good. Its the first time in a long time I've come out of the draft thinking we have multiple guys that could start week 1 for this team. The best part is they took BPA but also addressed the glaring needs on defense. The offensive picks are projects but to be honest our offense wasn't the problem last year. They did have turnovers but that can be corrected. Our offense is very talented and there wasn't much room to fit another guy in the group. I don't have any qualms about the Tackle. I assume Mudd saw something he liked and could develop. The QB is just another Aj Feeley, Kevin Kolb project that they could flip for a 2nd rounder in a few seasons if he progresses. The WR could be a Red zone threat or he could be McMullen 2.0. Either way that late is not worth losing sleep over.

Very good draft for the birds. Ray Didinger's analysis has me salivating for the season.

They even hit the UDFAs out the park. Cliff Harris and Polk --- both worth a flyer. A+ draft. Kudos to all.
That's how I feel. Very happy going to sleep tonight. Saw Lombardi give the eagles a C and the Cowboys an A earlier today. I almost threw something.
Pay no attention to Mike Lombardi when it comes to the Eagles. He has a major chip on his shoulder with them after being let go in the FO early in Reid's tenure. I've heard him enough on Bill Simmons podcast to know he's a pompous jerk. When he said that the reason Asomugha went to Philly was because they paid him the most, I knew anything else out of his mouth would be a complete waste of time.Other than Peter's ACL, this offseason had been an A

How do you guys see the LB core ending up? Assuming Kendricks is the SAM, Ryans obviously at MIKE, who gets the WILL spot? Rolle? Matthews?

If I had to guess. Rolle right now but Training camp will obviously decide it.

I see it starting with Rolle but I'm not sure he can finish there. I think it ends up being Ryans, Kendricks and Chaney.

I'd be fine with rolle or chaney but I think rolle showed a lot at the end of the year. I just see him taking another step up after getting a taste. Nothing against Chaney but Rolle played at a big program and knows how to play in big games. I just see him going further in his career. Chaney is great depth though. Hopefully Matthews develops a little this year also. Would be nice to have a solid LB corps for a change.

I like Chaney in there too. Kendricks, Ryans, Chaney/Rolle gets me pretty excited. One of the top in the league maybe not, but not a bottom feeder any more. VERY excited to see what those guys can do, with great press man coverage from 2 probowl cbs, 2 pretty solid slot cbs, and... oh ya... one of the most aggressive and best Dlines in the league. Finally back to some D in Philly! Juan's got a year under his belt and has great secondary and D line coaches... I think our D is gonna be one of the best in the league this year.

not sure I would call DRC a probowl cb. we really need our safties to play better too. but no doubt the LBs are the best they have been in a long time. no more running on us all game long. I cant wait to see the other teams try.

Interesting. Just read an article quoting Rolle as having the most missed tackles, and being at the bottom of the league in the stat.

I don't want to come off like a dark cloud but I am still not liking Juan as DC. He still worries me a lot.

Whoa whao wahoo there big fella! The Eagles were #29 in the league covering the RB, unless our OLB's all of a sudden are that much better I think we need to slow down a bit. We did well against the TE, but I wouldnt call our slot corners great. We did well against the TE's because Aso covered them since we had Asante and DRC on the outside. Thats going to change this year.

How about we end this with: We upgraded our LBs at the cost of a slot corner. We do have some nice rookie depth coming in from the draft.

:highfive:

Now that the draft is over, I feel like this is probably the biggest area of concern on the team.

:highfive:
Not trying to get too ahead of ourselves, but it's just exciting what we've done on D. We also had DRC play slot (he was awful) and Nnamdi (He at times seemed lost in there), so overall, shifting to a press man which works better with washburns D (love how everyone calls it washburns D and not Castillos). As for vs the Run, Cox is gonna be a huge plug and command some double teams at times. That Dline is improved a lot with him in it. All this aside, that new LB corps is gonna vastly improve stopping the run.

Well he WAS a probowl CB. Has potential to be again now that he's a year into our system, has LB help, a stud on the other side, and gets to play man coverage on the outside. I think DRC will impress people a lot this year.I like Chaney in there too. Kendricks, Ryans, Chaney/Rolle gets me pretty excited. not sure I would call DRC a probowl cb. we really need our safties to play better too. but no doubt the LBs are the best they have been in a long time. no more running on us all game long. I cant wait to see the other teams try.

Interesting. Just read an article quoting Rolle as having the most missed tackles, and being at the bottom of the league in the stat.
Ya he struggled early... but found his game later in the season. Remember he was a rookie last year with no OTA's and camps. I think he'll greatly improve this year and Chaney is always there too

I don't want to come off like a dark cloud but I am still not liking Juan as DC. He still worries me a lot.
I don't think he's a Great DC by any means. I think a first year for anyone is tough... guy works his ### off and probably learned a lot the hard way last year. Remember, Washburn OWNS that Dline, and we just brought in a GREAT secondary coach. He's got lots of talent, everyones bought into the scheme, and I think Juan will do a great job this year. Wishful thinking maybe, but if he fails this year then it really was him that was the problem. He was great near the end of last year.

I am not saying he will fail but ultimately it all comes down to him and the position he puts the players in. I like the DL coach and I like the DB coach as well and I think they'll help but IMO, as position coaches, they can only do so much. You hear a lot about how the guy works his ### off...well, this is the NFL...there's isn’t a coach employed who doesn't have that on their resume as well. How much he learned is key and having OTA's this year will help with that. Lets just say I am very cautiously optimistic when it comes to him.

This is where I think Boykin, with a full offseason program, is going to excel as our slot CB this year. He may not be as talented as Aso or DRC but he has better ability to play the slot. Slot is more about agility than pure speed. I think Boykin is going to be a huge step up from trying to shoehorn DRC or Aso in that role last year. Kendricks should be a big step up as well. His speed should be able to pick up the RB out of the backfield better than what we had going on last year. I'm also excited to see what Rolle can do with a full offseason.

A lot to look forward to this year. I actually feel better this year than I did going into last year and its only May.

I am rooting for Rolle to win that WLB job. I may be in the minority, but he just seems like one of those players that is always around the ball. Turnovers, big hits..etc. I just have that feeling about him...

Eagles Claim OT Welch Off Waivers

Posted 2 hours ago

By Chris McPherson

The Eagles bolstered the depth of the offensive tackle position Friday when they claimed Thomas Welch off waivers from the St. Louis Rams.

When Organized Team Activities get underway, the Eagles will have starters Demetress Bell and Todd Herremans. At backup, the Eagles have King Dunlap, D.J. Jones, fifth-round pick Dennis Kelly and Welch.

The 6-6, 300-pound Welch played in eight games in 2011 - five for the Rams and three for the New England Patriots, one of which was a start as an extra tight end. He also spent time on Buffalo's practice squad last season.

The 24-year-old Welch was originally drafted in the seventh round by the Patriots in 2010 out of Vanderbilt where he converted from tight end to offensive lineman. He quickly adapted to the level of play in the SEC and started at right tackle in 2008 and left tackle in 2009. Welch spent most of his rookie season on the Vikings practice squad after he was released by the Patriots. He was promoted to the Vikings' 53-man active roster late in the season, but did not play in any games.

Here is the NFL.com scouting report on Welch when he was a draft prospect in 2010:

"(Welch) is an adequate athlete for the position but lacks the kind of initial quickness, agility and lateral range to play on the left side at the next level. He is still learning the nuances of the offensive line and will need a few seasons, probably as a practice-squad member, to get it all figured out.

"He is not a natural knee-bender and tends to lunge out after blocks and generally goes to the ground too often. He struggles when trying to mirror better edge rushers at this level and will need to move back to the right side if he has any chance to make it in the NFL. When things go according to plan, he appears comfortable and confident, but when faced with something he hasn't seen in practice, he can look lost."

STRENGTHS

"Welch has prototypical size and very good length. Solid athlete who has some versatility after playing tight end and both tackle positions in college. High-effort kid who shows a bit of a mean streak and fights to the whistle every play."

Same. He passed the eyeball test for me at the end of last year. He looked like a player. Always around the ball making plays. That was him as a raw rookie late round draft pick not expected to contribute anything with a shortened off-season. Polish him a little more and lets see what he can do.

Well I wanted to do a little post draft analysis; enjoy (if you enjoy this kind of thing).

Round 1 Fletcher Cox DT 6'4" 298 Mississippi St.

Probably the best DL in the draft, fits what the Eagles do with their DTs, just beginning to realize his potential. Trade up was almost surely needed to secure him. Will at least rotate with Jenkins/Patterson immediately and provides insurance for both. Grade: A

Round 2 Mychal Kendricks ILB 5'11" 239 California

High impact, blazingly fast, 3 year starter who was always in the backfield. A little on the short side, but powerfully built. Will start from day 1 on the outside. Grade: A

Round 2 Vinny Curry DE 6'3" 266 Marshall

Value-wise, could not pass him up at the point where he was taken. Quality DEs just shouldn't be there. So I completely get why, but the fact is that even in the best case scenario he will be the 4th DE on this team not only this year but probably 2 or 3. If Brandon Graham lives up to his massive potential, will push Curry down even more. Value: A, Need: C-, Overall Grade: B.

Round 3 Nick Foles QB 6'5" 243 Arizona

There were 7 QBs in this draft with starting potential IMO and Foles was one of them (Cousins was not). In fact, the top 8 on my list were drafted in exactly the order I had them ranked, go figure. Foles is worth developing as he put up great stats with virtually no supporting cast and seems to have the arm and smarts for the next level. Something different for the Eagles as he has prototypical size and is not overly athletic. The fact is that we needed a QB to bring up behind Vick to possibly start. Kafka is not NFL caliber and deserves to be #3. I was literally thanking Andy for not taking Cousins instead. Grade: A-

Round 4 Brandon Boykin CB 5'9" 182 Georgia

Love this pick, he was my 5th rated CB overall in the draft. Granted it was necessary due to trading Asante Samuel, but Boykin is an ideal slot Corner and is an immediate upgrade to Hanson. He will do other things on STs and provide great leadership as well. Should see time in Nickel situations right away. Grade: A

Round 5 Dennis Kelly OT 6'8" 321 Purdue

No value here at all. Completely off the radar by nearly all accounts. IE big reach. If it was any earlier than round 5 it would be an F. He has no chance to contribute unless both Bell and Herremans go down, that's even if he makes the team. Grade: D.

Round 6 Marvin McNutt WR 6'3" 216 Iowa

Watching him the past few years in the Big 10, McNutt is a player. Not WR1 talent, but has the size hands and route running abilities to push Reilly Cooper right off the roster. Could become the "Red Zone WR" right off the bat. Is still developing (was Iowa's QB as a freshman) and is very intelligent; could replace Jason Avant in the next year or 2 if everything goes well . Would have greatly preferred Juron Criner in the 5th round, but McNutt will be interesting to watch. Grade: B

Round 6 Brandon Washington OG 6'3" 320 Miami

Unlike Kelly, this is a guy with a high grade who slipped for various reasons. Great value for the Eagles here and could develop quickly into a spot starter if needed. Grade: B

Round 7 Bryce Brown RB 6'0" 223 Kansas St.

Incredibly raw, insanely talented, and probably a diva headcase. That's the kind of chance you take in the 7th round IMO. Was VERY surprised they passed on Chris Polk this late, but 24 hours later he was signed as an UDFA so they will likely compete for 1 roster spot; should bring out the best in both. This should help ensure the Eagles have one of, if not THE best young RB stables in the entire league. Brown + Polk Grade: A

So that's 4 A's, 1 A-, 3 B's and 1 D. Pretty spectacular overall - looks like an A for the draft as a whole. It seems like they filled many needs with quality ascendant football players. Let us hope and pray this is what finally brings the Lombardi trophy to Philadelphia.

Really liked the Eagles draft. Got lots of value and patched up that defensive front 7 with 3 good players.

Excellent write-up, Zadok. I agree with almost every point except for Kelly. At the 5th round, if Howard Mudd saw something he liked in the kid and Andy took a chance, I'm willing to wait and see. He's not going to kill you at the 5th round though. 4th or higher and thats a disaster waiting to happen.

Agree with everything except a little nitpick on the Curry "Need" Grade. Cole will be 30 this year, Babin is turning 32 in a few days. Whatever Graham gives you at this point is a bonus so adding a young quality DE to the mix there is needed.

Agree with everything except a little nitpick on the Curry "Need" Grade. Cole will be 30 this year, Babin is turning 32 in a few days. Whatever Graham gives you at this point is a bonus so adding a young quality DE to the mix there is needed.
Thanks. You're right to bring up their ages, but don't forget Tapp and even Hunt at DE though...

Well I wanted to do a little post draft analysis; enjoy (if you enjoy this kind of thing).
Thanks dude.

Grade: D.

without seeing any of these guys play on sunday yet, I feel this is the best draft I have ever seen by the eagles. you can tell they felt the defense needed help and they made the best choices imo at the positions they needed. I admit I did not know much about the LB kendricks, but from what I have read/seen on him I am impressed. at the very least our defense got a major shot in the arm
