2014 NFL Free Agents (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Speaking Thursday, Lions coach Jim Caldwell was noncommittal about free agent Brandon Pettigrew's status.
"We have to look at every option," Caldwell said. "We've got to have contingencies for every single thing. So we look at it on both sides of it, and we'll see how things work out." Coaches are typically a little more sunny if they expect a player to return, but there's still not much to read into Caldwell's comments. The sides are meeting at the Combine.

Pettigrew seems like he might be someone the Giants would take a look at in FA.

Rotoworld:

USA Today's Tom Pelissero passes along Combine "buzz" that free agent DE Michael Johnson could head to the Vikings.
The dots connect, as ex-Bengals DC Mike Zimmer is now the Vikings' head coach, and Minnesota is needy on the defensive line with Jared Allen a virtual lock to leave in free agency. Johnson just turned 27, and is a solid pass rusher with plus run-defending skills. Minnesota is $28.8 million under the cap.

Rotoworld:

GM Martin Mayhew said the Lions "definitely" are interested in re-signing free agent Brandon Pettigrew.
"We had our free agent meeting and the coaches liked him, liked what he can do," said Mayhew. "He's an all-around guy." New head coach Jim Caldwell was far less certain of Pettigrew's future earlier in the week, but perhaps he was just playing coy. Pettigrew is our No. 4 free agent tight end.

Broncos GM John Elway confirmed at the Combine he expects free agents Eric Decker and Knowshon Moreno to test the open market.
"I think they have to hit the market, especially when you look at where we are and what we have coming up," Elway said. Decker is expected to command at least $8 million per season and the Broncos don't have the cap space to afford him with Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, and Wes Welker all up for free agency after the 2014 season. Denver is also expected to let free agent LB Wesley Woodyard test the open market.

A source tells the Daily News that Matt Schaub is not interested in being Geno Smith's backup.

Schaub is expected to be released by the Texans shortly. He likely fancies himself as a 2014 starter somewhere, so he doesn't want to put the word out that he'd be OK with backing up a turnover-prone second-year man like Smith. But once teams get through their evaluations, we suspect Schaub will lack for shots at starting gigs. Even a desperate team like the Raiders should aim higher.

Coach Gus Bradley gave free agent Chad Henne a lukewarm vote of confidence.

Bradley was asked about finding a franchise quarterback. "That's really difficult," he said. "I guess Chad Henne is ours, and he's our starter if we get him re-signed." The Jags hold the No. 3 overall pick, meaning Henne could very well be a mentor or bridge to a rookie. Blaine Gabbert will compete for a backup role.

GM Jerry Reese confirmed the Giants will be looking for running backs in the draft and free agency.

David Wilson (neck surgery) is tentatively expected to be ready for training camp, but Reese won't be taking any chances. "Obviously, we can't put all our eggs in that basket," he said. The easiest move will be to re-sign in-house free agent Andre Brown, who won't cost a ton of money as a 27-year-old injury-prone back.

Rotoworld:

The Cowboys will not tender restricted free agent RB Phillip Tanner, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Cowboys are $20 million or so over the 2014 salary cap, and can't afford to pay Tanner the lowest possible RFA tender ($1.389 million). They'd probably take him back at the NFL minimum cost. Tanner turns 26 years old in August and has below-average running ability, but is an effective special teamer.

The agent for Chris Johnson met with the Titans this weekend and the veteran's status remains unchanged.

In other words, Johnson is still fully expected to be released. He's repeatedly said he has no intention of taking a pay cut on his scheduled $8 million and word has been out for more than a month that the Titans want to move on. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has been talking up Shonn Greene at the Combine.

Rotoworld:

According to NFL Network, "it's clear the Jets are viewed as a legitimate possible landing spot" for free agent Michael Vick.

This flies in the face of a Sunday report from plugged in New York Daily News Jets beat mean Manish Mehta, who is hearing that a Vick signing is "unlikely." It's possible that both reports have validity. The Jets are a legit possibility for Vick because he has ties to Marty Mornhinweg and could mentor Geno Smith. But it's unlikely because they're not interested in the distraction Vick inevitably brings.

Excerpt from Peter King's MMQB:

Everywhere you turned in Indianapolis, you saw front-office men chatting with agents. Drew Rosenhaus tweeted he met with all 32 teams here. That’s because the start of free agency is 15 days away, and the crop could be very good … and the average NFL team is about $17.8 million under the projected $130 million cap number. That should mean that after three years of an essentially flatlined NFL salary cap (2011: $120.4 million; 2012: $120.6 million; 2013: $123 million), teams will be tempted to spend like they haven’t in the past couple springs.

It’s basically a time of implicit tampering, when agents are taking the temperature on their potential free-market players. No deals are supposed to be made before the March 11 opening of the market, but it’s naïve to think deals aren’t discussed. Not by every team, but certainly some.

The heightened activity this year is also because the meter is running on the salary cap in every NFL front office. There was a provision in the 2011 collective bargaining agreement that most in the public have forgotten but that’s soon going to come into significant play. In the four cap years 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, each NFL team must spend a minimum of 89 percent of its cap money. And the league must spend a collective minimum of 95 percent of its cap money. That was put in to stop teams from hoarding money and not spending it. Oakland, for instance, has a substantial amount of cap money available—about $70 million—and the Raiders will be almost forced to spend a large amount of it or deal with onerous league sanctions at the end of the four-year period, in 2017.

There’s an estimated $470 million in cap money available to teams to spend this contract season, and GMs know they can’t hoard that money for long.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline reports the Cardinals will make a "big run" at free agent LT Branden Albert.

If they don't land Albert, Pauline reports the Cardinals will "look offensive tackle" in the first round of May's draft. Albert has several durability concerns and is entering his age-30 season, but Pauline isn't the first to indicate the Cards want a piece of him. Rumors of Arizona's interest have also appeared on the Cardinals' own team website, as well as FOX Sports 910 Phoenix.

He finished last season with over 1,400 yards and 10 TDs behind a not very good o-line and a below average passing game.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Bears have "strong interest" in re-signing free agent Josh McCown, and that the Jets and Bucs are also interested.

Rapsheet lumps the Bucs in with the Bears' "strong interest." Chicago's interest should go without saying after McCown flourished in Marc Trestman's system as Jay Cutler's backup last season, but the Bucs and Jets should be careful not to overpay. McCown is a 35-year-old (in July) journeyman who was managed and manipulated to success by an offensive guru. New York and Tampa Bay likely don't have the coaching-staff horses to keep McCown's resurgence going.

$30M guaranteed over the first 3 years. He averaged 1400 combined yards and 6 TD's a year, so it could have been a whole lot worse. He did manage to not miss a single game in that time frame, so it is arguable if he was worth that much money.

Only $13M of that deal was fully guaranteed, the rest was for injury. They could have cut him last year ($10M salary) and taken only a $6M hit. The truth is it was only a two year guaranteed deal but they kept him for three.

No no no. SB was 10m.

2011 base was guaranteed at 3m.

2012 salary was 8m, unguaranteed until the fifth day of the league year, except for injury

2013 salary was 10m, unguaranteed until the fifth day of the league year, except for injury

2014 salary is 8m, unguaranteed until the fifth day of the league year, except for injury

2015 salary is 8m, unguaranteed until the fifth day of the league year, except for injury

2016 salary is 7m, unguaranteed until the fifth day of the league year, except for injury

While he was paid 31m over the past three years (and it is arguable whether he was worth it), only the 2011 salary and the SB was guaranteed.

Each year the Titans could choose to cut him at the beginning of free agency.

You could argue they should have, and that's on the FO/coaches, but at least the contract was structured so they had that choice, something the Vikings and Eagles did not have considering the guaranteed money they gave AP (36m)and LeSean McCoy also in 2011 (20m).

The Miami Herald reports the Bucs, along with the Dolphins and Cardinals, are believed to have interest in free agent LT Branden Albert.
Miami and Arizona's interest has been well documented since last April's draft, but this is the first we've seen Tampa Bay connected to Albert. Bucs LT Donald Penn graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 19 left tackle last season and has two years left on a six-year, $41.7 million deal. His name has been floated as a potential cap casualty, a move that would clear over $7.4 million. Albert isn't going to come cheap, however. He's our No. 3 free-agent left tackle.

The Florida Times Union wonders if the 49ers could be interested in free agent Maurice Jones-Drew.
It seems like an extreme long shot. The 49ers' backfield doesn't appear to be big enough for both Jones-Drew and Frank Gore. Plus, San Francisco has talented backups in Kendall Hunter and Marcus Lattimore ready to assume larger roles with Gore seemingly destined for fewer carries. Jones-Drew spent his entire life in California before being drafted by the Jaguars in 2006. We don't expect him to have a hot market. He's our own Evan Silva's No. 85 free agent.

Curious where Kenny Britt goes, for real!
There will likely be a very soft market for an injury prone head case that hasn't been able to put anything together for the past couple of seasons. He is a talent, but I wouldn't be shocked if he's still not signed by the time training camps start up.

The more I think about it, the more I think his career, at least for FF purposes, is over. He may wallow around on a team or 3 for the next 2-3 seasons as a #4/5 guy and then meander his way outta the league.

I was very high on his talent at one point, but I agree.

CBS' Jason La Canfora reports the Raiders are "mulling" free agent Michael Vick.
La Canfora also reports the Texans are "seen as a likely landing spot for (Vick)," but it's unclear if he's simply spitballing. Per La Canfora, the Jets are an unlikely landing spot, while the Eagles remain in play. There haven't been many concrete reports on a soft market's "top available quarterback," but that should change in the run up to the March 11 start of free agency.

Free agent Plaxico Burress hopes to continue his playing career.
Burress is back in the news after Knicks guard Raymond Felton was arrested on gun charges. Going on 37, Burress missed all of 2013 with a torn rotator cuff. Burress has made only four appearances since he appeared in all 16 games for the Jets in 2011. He's almost certainly played his final down.

Free agent Terrell Owens said "there's no doubt I can still play."
It's the same song and dance we've been going through with T.O. since he last played in the NFL in 2010. Owens says he's still in outstanding shape and can run a 4.43 forty-yard dash. T.O. hasn't received any interest from the NFL since the Seahawks released him in August 2012. That's not going to change. T.O.'s agent needs to start preparing his client's retirement papers.

Rotoworld:

The Tampa Bay Times considers the Bucs a possible landing spot for free agent Jared Allen.
It's easy to connect the dots here because Leslie Frazier is now the defensive coordinator of the Bucs and he's in desperate need of pass-rushing talent. However, at age 32 with a ton of tread on his tires, Allen should be signed as more of a situational player than a solution. He'd be a better fit with the Broncos, who reportedly had interest in trading for him at October's deadline.

According to NJ.com, the Giants are planning to attack the guard position in free agency.
The Giants have holes all over their offensive line, including at guard where Chris Snee is coming off hip surgery, David Diehl retired, Kevin Boothe is an unrestricted free agent and James Brewer has not performed well enough to project as a starter. Geoff Schwartz is our top guard available, one that is capable of playing on both sides as well as filling in at right tackle if needed. General manager Jerry Reese must ensure that Eli Manning is protected after taking a career-high 39 sacks last season.

ESPN Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco believes the Jaguars will offer free agent Maurice Jones-Drew a two-year deal with a lot of incentives.
It would be a low-ball offer, but we wouldn't be shocked if the Jags don't offer Jones-Drew anything at all. Either way, as DiRocco puts it, "he's gone." Jones-Drew is going to test the market and will likely get overpaid on a three-year deal based on name value. The rebuilding Jags won't sink money into a declining veteran at the game's most replaceable position.

Profootballtalk reports that free agent Riley Cooper is more of a priority for the Eagles to re-sign than Jeremy Maclin.
It's PFT's Mike Florio's understanding that "it's not even close." This contradicts a Philadelphia Inquirer report from last weekend that the team would prefer to re-sign Maclin over Cooper. Florio has been all over Cooper this month. Last week, a source informed PFT that Cooper will be in "significant demand" once free agency opens March 11. Cooper doesn't have quite the injury history Maclin does and broke out in coach Chip Kelly's offense in 2013. Maclin is still an unknown to the current Eagles staff. Both players would have suitors on the open market.

The Nashville Tennessean expects the Titans to show interest in free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson.
Jackson was released by the Browns on Wednesday. He played for new Titans DC Ray Horton in Cleveland last season and racked up a team-leading 141 tackles. When Horton joined the Cleveland coaching staff ahead of the 2013 season, he called Jackson a "coach's dream." With the Titans expected to implement more 3-4 concepts, Jackson could help teach the defense and be a nice fit at inside linebacker next to third-year pro Zach Brown. Jackson should have plenty of suitors.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports seven teams reached out to free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson following his release from the Browns on Wednesday.
This is probably a bit agent-driven, but NFL Network's Jeff Darlington, who is a high school pal of Jackson's, also confirmed that Jackson was drawing heavy interest. Darlington reports Jackson, 30, will start his tour Thursday. He's going to have plenty of suitors and can play in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes.

ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim considers Washington a potential landing spot for free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson.
The Redskins are in the market for a starting inside linebacker with London Fletcher done and Perry Riley a free agent. Jackson, 30, has a tie to the coaching staff in outside linebackers coach Brian Baker, who held that position with the Browns last season. He also went to the University of Maryland and would bring some of the leadership qualities Fletcher had. The linebacker-needy Vikings are also a potential option.

According to ESPN Boston, there's mutual interest between free agent LeGarrette Blount and the Patriots.
Although Blount averaged 5.04 YPC and and graded out as PFF's No. 9 back in terms of strict running last season, the Patriots shouldn't open their wallet too wide here. Blount is a 27-year-old two-down pounder that is a liability in the passing game, and the Patriots would be bringing him back to share the early-down work with the far more capable Stevan Ridley. They should also be looking to get passing back Shane Vereen as many touches as possible. Blount may very well end up testing the market if he's unsatisfied with New England's offers. All their focus is on getting free agent Aqib Talib locked up right now.

A source confirms to PFT that the Bengals have no interest in free agent Michael Vick.
When Vick first got out of prison and Andy Dalton was a rookie in 2011, the Bengals reportedly had interest. But now that Vick is an injury-prone 34-year-old, rocking Dalton's boat wouldn't make much sense. Vick would be a far better fit as a bridge quarterback with a team like the Raiders, Jets or Texans. Meanwhile, there have been whispers that the Bengals are looking to extend Dalton's contract, which expires after the 2014 season.

Rotoworld: the far more capable Stevan Ridley
Here's what happens when you back yourself into a corner by saying something over and over again and insisting it's god's own truth without any evidence to support it. You end up saying stupid things like:

This...

178 carries for 773 yards (4.5/rush) and 7 TDs with four fumbles

is "far more capable" than this...

152 carries for 772 yards (5.0/rush) and 7 TDs with three fumbles

Same offensive line, same role in the offense, same liability in the passing game, same stats -- but one guy did it on fewer opportunities.

CBS' Jason La Canfora reports free agent LB D'Qwell Jackson will visit the Titans and Broncos this weekend.
La Canfora has had the ear of Jackson's agent since his release. The Nashville Tennessean opined shortly after Jackson's release that the Titans would likely have interest. Jackson stuffed the stat-sheet under new Titans DC Ray Horton in Cleveland last season. With Wesley Woodyard also a free agent, the Broncos are in the market for inside linebackers.

ESPN's Adam Caplan stated on NFL Insiders that free agent OLB Jason Worilds could command $6-7 million on the open market.
Caplan reported that as many as "6-8 teams" could be in the hunt for Worilds, who is a 26-year-old pass rusher coming off a breakout, eight-sack season. Caplan believes it's very unlikely Worilds re-ups with the Steelers. Worilds is our No. 18 overall player eligible for free agency. Only Brian Orakpo would be a more desirable signing at the 3-4 outside linebacker position.

Signing Ken Whisenhunt seems to have taken Nate Washington off that owner's cut list. IIRC He was scheduled to make 4.8 mil and the talk just shifted from release to how he'll show the youngsters Whisenhunt's offense. Assuming Hunter is OK, the Titans aren't pressed to get a WR then.

They are expected to release David Stewart-once a pro bowl and 2nd team all-pro RT. Both Tackles were due to make a similar amount of $ with one year remaining (and each over 30 years old) 6.5ish.

It's important they address the Tackle position in so many ways. Young QB Locker or drafted QB, can't be without a decent Tackle. Next year, if they don't re-sign Roos, things could get bleak quick. Yet if they do, they have an older LT that needs to have a replacement ready, so...some movement at tackle will surely be in their offseason plans.

I fully expect Rams, Bills, and Steelers to have a conversation about Stewart. Whether there is a need or the $ to sign him...but he's been a gem for the Titans so there will surely be a conversation with former Titans coaches and their new teams.

Roos only allowed two sacks last year and is still a top lineman despite his age and some contrary critiques.

I suppose just some of the basics. Titans haven't used hot routes since Heimerdinger. They forced the QB to adjust. Nate was saying (article) that Whisenhunt's offense is more complex for the WRs but he looks forward to it etc.

Worded that poorly...haven't used them in a long time. Heimerdinger had QBs and WRs act like they were the hot WR and most of the time they weren't. Seems like a silly scheme against a blitz, but it was fairly effective.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Cardinals have reached out to free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson.
Arizona is trying to arrange a visit for next week. Jackson may never make it to the desert. He has visits scheduled in Tennessee on Friday and Denver on Monday. The Vikings and Redskins are also said to be interested in the 30-year-old linebacker. The Cardinals top priority is re-signing free agent ILB Karlos Dansby, but Jackson wouldn't be a bad fallback option.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the salary cap is expected to be set "at about" $133 million this season and may rise over $140 million in 2015 and $150 million in 2016.
Those would be huge increases compared to the minimal jump we saw last March. The 2014 cap could be set as soon as Friday. The $133 million cap would be a $10 million increase on last year's $123 million. With the reports of major leaps down the road, we could see fewer cap casualties and big spending next month with an eye toward the future. It's welcome news for the free-agent class.
