2014 NFL Free Agents (2 Viewers)

Rotoworld:

Free agent QB David Carr is attempting to "resume" his NFL career this offseason, working with ex-Giants QBs coach Mike Sullivan.
Perhaps inspired by younger brother Derek entering the NFL as a potential early-round pick, Carr will train with his sibling and Sullivan before Fresno State's March Pro Day. David turns 35 in July and spent last year out of football. He did receive in-season tryouts from the Titans, Raiders, and Cowboys.

I dont get the Kenny Britt ranking. 101 overall on NFL.com FA list????

Why they glamorize his mistakes is over my head.

Did anyone forget the beginning of the season he put up 289 (271 in 2 games) and 2 TDs the first 3 games of the year, then missed the rest because of injury.

2012 a few decent games.
2011, he put up MONSTER numbers. (A bunch of 9s, a 40 POINT GAME, 15 point game before his 3-4 games out, then to end the season 14,15,15.)

Is it just me or do I see a pretty good opportunity for production here, Time will tell wherever he goes, but seriously! I dont see who a better player to have would be in Free Agency @ WR, Call me Crazy but I would take him over Nicks ANYDAY. Dudes ceiling is CRAZY good! & to put him at the 101 FA spot.? The writer needs to lay off that "Haterade"

he reminds me of Braylon, tons of talent but just doesn't care.

Your years are off.

Even if you llllove his 2010 season with 775 yards, roughly a third against the Eagles in one game, that was still 3-4 years ago depending how you gauge years/seasons.

Rotoworld:

NFL Network's Charley Casserly believes the Redskins will "go hard" after offensive lineman in free agency.
According to Casserly, the Redskins main concern should be beefing up a diminutive offensive line that "only" averaged 308 pounds in 2013. New coach Jay Gruden said of the smallish offensive line, "You know they’re smaller, but they can get out and move in space. But sometimes on third-and-long they sometimes get pushed back in the pocket. That’s a negative." Robert Griffin III was sacked 38 times in only 13 games in 2013. If RGIII is to bounce back, the offensive line play in Washington will have to improve.

Rotoworld:

CSN Bay Area reports contract talks between the Raiders and free agent S Charles Woodson have hit a "snag."
It sounds like the Raiders are offering another incentive-heavy one-year deal, while Woodson wants a "more straightforward contract" entering his age-38 season. Woodson has threatened to retire if the club doesn't meet his demands. Woodson is obviously on the tail end of his career, but was one of Oakland's top defenders in 2013. He seems 50:50 to play football again at this point.

Rotoworld:

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora "would be very surprised" if free agent OLB Brian Orakpo did not hit the open market.
Orakpo has yet to receive a contract offer from the Redskins and could look to maximize his value in free agency. The franchise tag remains an option, but Washington has multiple needs to address and may not want to tie up $11.46 million in Orakpo. If allowed to reach the open market, Orakpo could command a contract in excess of Paul Kruger's five-year, $41 million deal last offseason.

Source: Jason La Canfora on Twitter

Looks like Sam Shields will be hitting the market.

Looked like they were close to a deal...then the cap went up and who knows.

He wants more than the $6-7 mil the Packers were reportedly offering him (or wants more up front).

Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter stated on the Ross Tucker Podcast that he "definitely" expects the Jets to be "in play" for free agent Michael Vick when the market opens.
Schefter indicated the Jets' interest in Vick is stronger than their desire to sign fellow free agent Josh McCown. "I don't expect Michael Vick to be back in Philadelphia," said Schefter. "...And then he's gonna have to decide what's the best circumstance for him moving forward. I think the Jets will be in play. ... I definitely think the Jets will have some level of interest in Michael Vick. Definitely." The Jets would view Vick as a training camp competitor with beleaguered sophomore quarterback Geno Smith. At age 34, Vick should be priced affordably.

Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter doesn't expect free agent Josh McCown to re-sign with the Bears.
McCown generated significant buzz among teams at the NFL Combine. "I don't expect him to be back in Chicago, because the interest will be that great in his services," stated Schefter. Schefter "doesn't think" McCown will sign with the Jets, whose interest in Michael Vick appears stronger. Angling for his final NFL contract, 34-year-old McCown now seems poised to go to the highest bidder.

Free agent Josh McCown said he has to be "willing to go somewhere else, if that's how it breaks."
McCown wants to re-sign with the Bears but acknowledges he has an opportunity to earn more money and play elsewhere. "This is probably going to be the last time I stand in free agency with this kind of leverage," McCown, 34, said. "So there's an understanding of an opportunity here to gain some more resources both to take care of our family and to do more good with." The Bucs, Jets, Raiders and Texans are just a number of teams that could show interest.

WGR 550 Buffalo reports the Bills are unlikely to re-sign or use the franchise tag on free agent FS Jairus Byrd.
"The two sides have had productive discussions, and while things could change, it seems at this point that the two sides will split," writes WGR's Jeremy White. White's colleague, Joe Buscaglia, is arguably the top Bills beat reporter and adds that the club "explored all their options, including a trade." GM Doug Whaley shot a "substantial offer" Byrd's way -- reportedly one that would've made him the NFL's highest-paid safety in the first two seasons -- but the 27-year-old seems intent on testing the market. Byrd may simply not want to play in Buffalo anymore. The franchise tag deadline is Monday at 4PM ET. Byrd is free agency's top safety.

Free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson is currently flying to Denver for his visit with the Broncos.
Jackson visited the Titans this weekend, but left without a contract in place. The Cardinals also recently reached out to Jackson. Jackson would resume playing 4-3 middle linebacker with the defending AFC Champion Broncos, in a situation that should very much appeal to him. Jackson is entering his age-31 campaign, and he's always been more effective in 4-3 defenses than 3-4s.

Free agent Plaxico Burress hopes to continue his playing career.
Burress is back in the news after Knicks guard Raymond Felton was arrested on gun charges. Going on 37, Burress missed all of 2013 with a torn rotator cuff. Burress has made only four appearances since he appeared in all 16 games for the Jets in 2011. He's almost certainly played his final down.

Source: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter
Free agent Terrell Owens said "there's no doubt I can still play."
It's the same song and dance we've been going through with T.O. since he last played in the NFL in 2010. Owens says he's still in outstanding shape and can run a 4.43 forty-yard dash. T.O. hasn't received any interest from the NFL since the Seahawks released him in August 2012. That's not going to change. T.O.'s agent needs to start preparing his client's retirement papers.

Source: Associated Press
Free agent WR Plaxico Burress is still rehabbing his shoulder.
Burress tore his rotator cuff during training camp last August and was hit with a 7-8 month rehab timetable. But he's just working on range of motion right now and his goal is to get medically cleared in time for training camp. Even if Plax does get healthy, we'd be surprised if he stuck on a roster this season. He's entering his age-38 season.

Source: Steelers.com

Plaxico is clinging to the faint hope that he can still play. He is competing against the free agent pool and a bumper crop of rookie draft prospects, so the odds are long.

Nate Washington is maybe the only honest critic of Britt-seemed that way at times. Anyway, here's a bit from an article. On the surface it's nothing, but I've never read of this before and it actually seems like maybe just maybe he grew up.

“Kenny was over at my house maybe three times this past week and I talk to him all the time,” Washington said. “I know he's been through a lot and a lot of people have their opinions. But football doesn't make us. That's a great friend of mine. He's been through a lot in his life. We still talk daily. I still treat him like a brother and he treats me like a brother.”

Washington said Britt, a first-round pick of the Titans in 2009, is doing well.

“He's made tremendous strides in his life and I'm pretty sure when he gets that opportunity again, he'll seize it,” Washington said. “But he's doing great. He loves his family. We all make mistakes, big or small, but all you can do is look forward to tomorrow. That's what he's doing, moving on and being a better man to his wife and his kids.”

Britt looked average at best in 2012, and was utter garbage in 2013. Then add in bad knees and his arrest record. If 2010 / 2011 Britt somehow shows up then yeah, whoever signs him on a veteran minimum deal is getting a steal. But it's far more likely that the multiple knee injuries took away what made him special in the first place. And I'm as big a Britt defender as you'll find on these or any other FF boards. If I were an NFL GM, I'd sign him to a cheap one year contract with no guarantees, but he wouldn't be a priority for me. If he still had difference making talent, we'd have seen some type of flashes of it the past two years. But he's been a complete non factor.

The Cincinnati Enquirer's "gut" feeling is that free agent DE Michael Johnson lands in Minnesota.
He'd be reuniting with ex-Bengals DC Mike Zimmer, who's now the Vikings' head coach. Defensive end is a big need in Minnesota with Jared Allen set to walk in free agency. In an ideal world, the Vikes would add Johnson, re-sign Everson Griffen, and place them in a three-man rotation along with LE Brian Robison.

ESPN's Adam Schefter would not be surprised if the Bills "made a run" at free agent Michael Vick.
This jibes with recent whispers that the Bills aren't sold on last year's first-round pick, E.J. Manuel. Schefter says the Bills have "always liked Vick" and "debated pursuing him in the past," adding that the 34-year-old could be ideal camp competition for Manuel and Thad Lewis. It sounds far-fetched, but the Bills are closer to being playoff contenders than most believe. They had the league's No. 10 defense and won six games in spite of Manuel's 42.2 QBR in 10 starts.

Free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson will meet with the Dolphins Monday night.
Jackson has been a busy man since the Browns released him Wednesday. He's already met with the Titans and Broncos, and has also been linked to the Cardinals and Redskins. In Miami, Jackson would likely step into the middle linebacker spot and kick Dannell Ellerbe to the outside. Weak-side 'backer Philip Wheeler was a disaster last season.

SI's Peter King suggests Tampa Bay as a potential landing spot for free agent FS Jairus Byrd.
With the franchise-tag deadline fast approaching, it's becoming increasingly clear that the Bills are going to let Byrd walk. He's rejected their latest offer, which would have made him one of the top paid safeties in the game according to CBS' Jason La Canfora. Tampa has a connection in Byrd's father, Gil, who is an assistant coach for their secondary. They also suffered through poor play from both Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron last season. However, Goldson signed a $41 million contract a year ago and Barron has two years left on the rookie deal he signed as the No. 7 overall pick in 2012. Safety is not a true need area for Tampa.

The Bills will not use the franchise tag on free agent FS Jarius Byrd ahead of Monday's 4PM ET deadline.
Various reports over the last hour indicate the Raiders will not tag DE Lamarr Houston, the Ravens won't tag LT Eugene Monroe, the 49ers won't tag SS Donte Whitner, and the Browns won't franchise SS T.J. Ward. Byrd is expected to hit the market, and has a realistic chance to become the highest paid safety in football. Seahawks FS Earl Thomas will be watching Byrd's market closely.

The Miami Herald confirms the Dolphins are "very intrigued" by free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson.
The Nashville Tennessean reported Jackson is meeting with the Dolphins on Monday. Jackson has also visited the Titans and Broncos. Jackson racked up a gaudy 141 tackles last season, but was actually frequently washed out against the run. His name is bigger than his game at this point.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Packers are expected to express interest in free agent TE Garrett Graham.
The Texans are reportedly working to lock Graham up this week, but RapSheet adds that the Packers have been fans of Graham since he came out of Wisconsin. Graham will turn 28 in August and caught 49 passes and five touchdowns in 15 games last season. The free-agent tight-end market is barren. Graham is one of the better options but won't be expensive. He's not a game changer.

The Detroit Free Press reports "odds are" the Lions and free agent Brandon Pettigrew won't agree to a new deal before the weekend.
Once the clock strikes midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning, all 32 teams will be able to negotiate with Pettigrew and every other free agent. The Lions hold exclusive negotiating rights until then and would like to get a long-term deal done with Pettigrew, but it doesn't look promising for GM Martin Mayhew. Pettigrew is said to be seeking over $6 million annually. That'd be a severe overpay.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson will visit the Colts.
Jackson is wrapping up a visit with the Dolphins on Tuesday and will hop back on the plane and head to Indianapolis. He's drawing a ton of interest; the Broncos and Titans have already met with Jackson since his release from the Browns last week. Indy is looking for a starter next to ILB Jerrell Freeman.

Free agent FS Jairus Byrd says he's still open to re-signing with the Bills.
"At this point I’m definitely keeping all my options open," said Byrd. "See whatever happens in free agency. The lines of communication are open with them as well. So no door is shut." GM Doug Whaley said Monday that the Bills also haven't shut the door on Byrd. Byrd will test the market when the free agency negotiating period opens this weekend and would have to be blown away to re-sign with the Bills before then. He'll likely become the league's highest paid safety.

Rotowolrd:

Free agent Jared Allen has every intention of reaching the open market.
"He’s going to see what 32 teams have to offer," were the words of Allen's rep to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Neither the Vikings nor Allen would have much to gain by agreeing to a pre-free agency deal. The Vikings are rebuilding, while Allen is going on 32. This could be Allen's last shot to not only get paid, but play for a winner.

Free agent T.J. Ward's player rep says he's had "detailed contract discussions" with the Browns.
Ward's rep says the sides have had extensive talks since the Combine, and that Ward "(remains) open to further discussions." It sounds like a deal could still be struck before Tuesday's official start of free agency, but that Ward is ready to hit the open market after he wasn't franchise tagged. The sides' exclusive negotiating window ends Saturday.

The Miami Herald reports free agent ILB D'Qwell Jackson will sign with one of the four teams he's visited.
That's the Dolphins, Colts, Broncos and Titans. Indy is getting the last crack after Jackson visited Miami on Monday. The Herald reported Monday that Jackson was "very intrigued" by the Dolphins, but his intrigue wasn't enough to sign on the dotted line without first giving the Colts a looksee. The fact that Jackson won't take any more visits is a sign he'd like to have a new home before teams can start talking with all free agents on Saturday.

Free agent James Jones suggested the Colts and Chargers as possible landing spots.
The Packers have made it clear that they're going to move forward with Jarrett Boykin as their No. 3 wideout, allowing Jones to walk. The Colts certainly have a need with 35-year-old Reggie Wayne coming off a torn ACL and only unproven LaVon Brazill/Da'Rick Rogers behind T.Y. Hilton. The Chargers are equally thin behind Keenan Allen. Jones would have a chance to step in as the No. 2 wideout in plus passing schemes in both locales.

Sources tell NJ.com that free agent Andrew Quarless is near the top of the Giants' list at tight end.
It's been a revolving door of late for the Giants at the tight end spot, with Martellus Bennett and then Brandon Myers both walking after signing one-year deals. There's an obvious connection to Quarless as new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who was the Packers tight ends coach from 2006-11. He'd be a low-cost, in-line option that could pair with unproven pass-catching specialist Adrien Robinson in a two-headed monster. The Giants are also expected to kick the tires on Jermichael Finley and Garrett Graham.

A source tells the Boston Herald that free agent Aqib Talib wants to be paid as a top-of-the-market corner.
As he should. Talib is entering his age-28 season and was the Patriots' most valuable defender last year, consistently dominating opposing No. 1 wideouts as a shadow corner. Brent Grimes is going on 31 and just got a four-year, $32 million deal from the Dolphins that included $16 million guaranteed. Although Talib has some off-field issues and a nagging hip concern, he's not going to hurt for leverage once he hits the open market. He was our No. 2 corner coming into free agency, behind only Grimes.

Free agent Jared Allen said he wants to sign with a "good organization" that gives him a "chance to win."
Allen, 32, also said he wants a "fair contract." He isn't looking to break the bank. The Broncos and Seahawks showed interest in Allen ahead of last year's trade deadline, and he's also been linked to the Bucs and Raiders this offseason. We can probably rule Oakland out. The other three clubs make some sense.

Rotoworld:

Vikings re-signed exclusive rights free agent RB Matt Asiata.
Asiata rushed for 51 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries in Week 15 against the Eagles before rumbling for 115 yards in the finale. He didn't touch the ball a single time all season other than those two games. With Toby Gerhart a free agent, Asiata could climb the depth chart and become the No. 2.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Vikings would like to re-sign free agent Jerome Simpson.
It likely wouldn't be more than a one-year deal. The draft and free-agent market are loaded with receivers, so it'd be wise for Simpson to sign quickly. Simpson wouldn't be anything more than the No. 3 receiver in Minnesota, behind Cordarrelle Patterson and Greg Jennings. Simpson played in Cincinnati from 2008-2011 when new Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was the defensive coordinator.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora "anticipate(s)" that the Texans will sign free agent Matt Cassel.
The dots connect, as new Texans coach Bill O'Brien was on New England's staff during Cassel's "breakout" 2008 season, and Houston could use a veteran bridge QB if it's to draft Blake Bortles, as expected. Bortles isn't ready to start in the NFL. Cassel already has a general understanding of O'Brien's offense.

This makes a ton of sense for Houston to do if they indeed draft their future starter in Bortles, Manziel, or Bridgewater. Cassel is a guy who can come in an mentor and take the reins for a year while his protege gets groomed for 2015. Most of the analysts are saying there's no QB ready to start from day one anyway. This only solidifies them taking a QB at #1 overall, imo.

Adrian Peterson tweeted his desire for the Vikings to sign free agent QB Michael Vick.
Peterson is never shy about giving personnel advice. This offseason, he's stated he doesn't want the Vikings to roll with a first-round rookie, instead preferring them to re-sign Matt Cassel. Now he took to Twitter to say he believes Vick would instantly make the Vikings a playoff team. Peterson's desire to win now is understandable as he enters his age-29 season. The problem is that Vick would be a heavy underdog to stay healthy long enough to reach a January game.

Colts signed ILB D'Qwell Jackson to a four-year, $22 million contract.
The deal includes $11 million guaranteed. In desperate need of a steadying presence next to Jerrell Freeman, the Colts have overpaid for linebacker help in free agency once again. This time they add a leader and one of the game's most prolific tacklers, but one that is entering his age-31 season, fits better in a 4-3 scheme and has struggled badly against the run over the last two years. Jackson also had visits with the Titans, Broncos and Dolphins.

The Arizona Republic says the Cardinals "can't afford to lose" free agent ILB Karlos Dansby.
Things on the Dansby front got harder for GM Steve Keim on Thursday as the Colts dumped a four-year, $22 million contract on a 30-year-old D'Qwell Jackson. Dansby is two years older, but is far more athletic and productive. Beat writer Kent Somers' suggestion of a two-year deal worth $10 or $12 million may not be enough to get the job done. Dansby is our No. 1 inside linebacker available.

The Houston Chronicle would be "stunned" if the Texans signed free agent Matt Cassel.
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora "anticipate(s)" that Cassel is Houston-bound, but reporter John McClain is much closer to the situation.
