2014 NFL Free Agents (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Jaguars could be interested in free agent Michael Vick.
Per Rapsheet, the Jags still want to re-sign Chad Henne, "but would be in" on Vick or Josh McCown. Vick has been linked to just about every quarterback-needy team, but a favorite for his services hasn't emerged. The Jags would have no need for Vick if they keep Henne as their bridge quarterback.

Rotoworld:

The Florida Times Union reports that the "expectation inside EverBank Field" is that the Jaguars re-sign free agent Chad Henne before Saturday.
Saturday is critical because that's when player reps can begin talking with other teams. Henne has been expected to remain in Jacksonville all along, but with free agency just five days away, it's possible he decides to see what he could get on the open market. Henne's near the top of a thoroughly underwhelming crop of QBs.

ESPN reports the Patriots and free agent Julian Edelman "discussed a new contract" on Thursday.
The Boston Globe reported late last month that the sides had yet to talk, so it's possible they're just now beginning negotiations. Edelman's rep can begin talking with other teams on Saturday. The open market is likely alluring for the former seventh rounder, but Edelman would be tempting fate if he moved on from a fit as perfect as New England. Of course, he may have no choice if the Pats make a low-ball offer.

I didn't watch much of BJ Raji last season. What happenned to him? His stats are terrible.
The system he plays in isn't stat friendly for DEs
Didn't he play in the same system last year? He turned down 8 million per season and he had 12 solo tackles.
His time at NT vs DE has varied over the years. Additionally, his snap count per game was scaled back this year.
True...but he also lacked any disruption we have seen in the past.
Didn't help him that Pickett was old and hurting and Raji was going to see the bulk of the attention in the middle as far as an offensive line is concerned.
The Packers are very lucky Raji turned down that deal. He's done nothing the last 2 seasons. In 2010, he had 6.5 sacks, 29 tackles, 3 passes defensed. In 2012 and 2013 COMBINED he had 29 tackles, 0 sacks and 0 passes defensed, 0 turnover plays as well.

The Packers were 26th against the run in 2013.

Pray your team doesn't sign him to anything more than the veteran minimum, because that's about what he's worth. Low effort, little results.
Apparently the Packers offered him 4 million on a one year deal yesterday.

Michael Vick could land with Bills, Jaguars, RaidersBy Dan Hanzus

Around the League Writer

It's becoming increasingly apparent Michael Vick will have no shortage of suitors on the open market.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the Jacksonville Jaguars are among the clubs interested in the veteran quarterback, according to a source informed of the team's thinking. Rapoport reports the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders are also options for Vick.

The Jaguars plan to re-sign Chad Henne and are looking for another quarterback to contend for the starting job. Blaine Gabbert won't be that guy, but Vick or perhaps Josh McCown represent two sensible fits.

The New York Jets and Houston Texans have also been linked to Vick, who is the best available signal-caller on ATL's top 101 free agents list. Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles have not been in talks and are expected to part ways after five seasons together.

Depsite Adrian Peterson's best efforts, the Minnesota Vikings are considered a long shot to land Vick, Rapoport reports.

The Jaguars will pick third in the 2014 NFL Draft and are widely expected to target a quarterback. It's unclear how their draft strategy could be affected if they landed Vick.

We imagine the Jaguars view Vick the way most of the NFL now does; he's a stop-gap solution or valuable insurance policy. There's a potential fit there.

Fresno State QB Derek Carr said "there are teams thinking about" signing free agent QB David Carr if they draft Derek.
"There’s so much positive things about having us both on the same team, that I don’t know why somebody wouldn’t think about it," Derek said. "And the truth is there are teams thinking about it, because they’ve been letting us know about it." The brothers have been working out with ex-Giants QBs coach Mike Sullivan to prepare Derek for the draft and try to get David back in the NFL.

Would someone actually waste a roster spot on David Carr? Or just sign him to their practice squad?

David would not qualify for the practice squad, but I have no problem with this. Tons of colleges hire a HS QB's coach as a "package deal" and that kid will only remain there for 4 years. I have no issue with a team bringing in David as a QB3 on a vet minimum contract to help his brother out. It would provide invaluable guidance/stability for a rookie in a new city, and small price to pay for bettering a potential face-of-the-franchise.

The Associated Press reports free agent Michael Vick could still end up re-signing with the Eagles.
According to a source, Vick could return if he "doesn't find the right fit elsewhere." Speaking in January, Vick himself said he'd be willing to return if "all else fails," so it's not exactly news. Vick has been linked to essentially every quarterback-needy team. He's likely moving on.

A source tells Profootballtalk that free agent Michael Vick could become a serious option for the Vikings if they fail to re-sign Matt Cassel.
Outside of Adrian Peterson, it's the first time Vick has been linked to the Vikings. He'd make the Vikes more competitive than Cassel, but would be a far poorer bet to stay healthy. The league's anonymous sources have yet to identify a favorite for Vick's services.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Bucs are "in the market" for a backup quarterback, and will be "looking at" free agents Josh McCown and Shaun Hill.
New Bucs GM Jason Licht recently said he's "absolutely" looking for a veteran to compete with Mike Glennon, and in theory, McCown is the best he could do on the open market. That ignores the fact that the 34-year-old journeyman may well be little more than a product of Marc Trestman's masterful coaching. ESPN's Adam Schefter doesn't expect McCown to re-sign with the Bears.

Lance Moore - WR - Free Agent
Saints released WR Lance Moore.

Moore hinted at his release Friday morning. The Saints tried to trade him, but nobody was willing to take on his $3.6 million. New Orleans saves over $2.531 million against the cap with the move but eats over $2.537 million in dead money. Moore was the longest-tenured Saints prior to his release. At 31 (in August) and a product of Drew Brees and Sean Payton, we don't anticipate a hot market.

Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio reported Friday that there could be a "bidding war" between the 49ers and Seahawks for free agent DE Michael Bennett.
Florio posted this on Twitter, then conceded on PFT's website that the Niners may be "feigning interest" in order to drive up Bennett's price tag for their division rivals. Bennett would be a bit of an odd fit in San Francisco's 3-4 scheme because he isn't a five-technique end, or a 3-4 rush 'backer. And the 49ers are strong at both of those positions. In addition to Seattle and apparently San Fran, the Bears, Jaguars, and Raiders are expected to pursue Bennett.

The Indianapolis Star reports the Colts and free agent CB Vontae Davis aren't close to a deal.
"No deal is imminent, and the sides are relatively far apart in negotiations," writes Stephen Holder. The Colts have roughly 12 hours before Davis' agent can legally begin negotiating with the other 31 teams. At this point, Davis may as well test the open market and see what's out there. The Colts badly want to re-sign Davis but seem unwilling to commit the top dollars he wants right now.

Free agent G/T Rodger Saffold's agent said his client will test the open market.
"Rodger definitely will be out in the free-agent market," Saffold's agent said. The Rams and Saffold talked this week, but Saffold likely wants to see if a team will pay him to play left tackle. The Rams want him to play right guard. Due to his versatility, we expect Saffold to have a healthy market despite injury concerns.

The Colts need to jump all over this guy, who is someone they should have drafted.

Jaguars re-signed QB Chad Henne to a two-year contract.
The Jaguars had expressed a desire to re-sign Henne since the season ended. Henne gives them a potential "bridge" quarterback should a rookie signal caller not be ready for the NFL. Henne, 29 in July, was one of the better options in a weak free-agent QB class. He started 13 games last season, completing 60.6 percent of his passes for 3,241 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 14 picks.

The Carroll County Times reports free agent LT Eugene Monroe is seeking $10 million per year.
Per beat writer Matt Zenitz, the Ravens are offering Monroe $8 million to $9 million per year. So there's a decent-sized gap to be bridged before next Tuesday's start of free agency. GM Ozzie Newsome surrendered 2014 fourth- and fifth-round picks when he acquired Monroe via Jacksonville last October. If Monroe hits the market, the Dolphins are expected to pursue him aggressively.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to sign him as assistant qb coach?

USA Today's Tom Pelissero has heard free agent TE Dustin Keller (knee) is "on track to return."
Keller was having a huge camp in 2013 with the Dolphins before tearing his ACL, MCL, and PCL, dislocating his right knee in Miami's third preseason game. There's no telling what Keller has left -- the injury was gruesome and he's entering his age-30 season -- but it's good news for him. NFL teams would probably want to see Keller work out before entertaining signing him.

Rotoworld:

Cardinals signed TE John Carlson to a two-year contract.
Concussion-plagued Carlson finished the 2013 season with 32 catches for 344 yards and one touchdown, appearing in 13 games with eight starts for Minnesota. He turns 30 in May. Although Carlson has never been an effective blocker or overly productive pass catcher in the NFL, teams seem to always hold him in high regard. His addition isn't good news for Rob Housler. As tight ends have never been a big part of Cardinals coach Bruce Arians' vertical passing offense, Carlson landing in Arizona has little or no expected fantasy impact.

Rotoworld:

The Indianapolis Star reports free agent CB Vontae Davis is looking for a deal in excess of Brent Grimes' four-year, $32 million contract.
It's not a surprise considering Davis is younger than Grimes and coming off an equally dominant season, grading out as a top-three corner by Pro Football Focus. The Colts remain interested in bringing Davis back, but he appears set to test the open market and could very well command over $8 million annually. Davis is 16th on Rotoworld's top-150 free agents list.

@AdamSchefter: Then again, 15 of the 44 starters in Super Bowl XLVIII were acquired through free agency. So, gentlemen, start your checkbooks.

In today's NFL, it's difficult for top CBs to lead the league in INTs as QBs throw away from them. Edelman's 105 receptions make him a fine WR. QBs stink which i think increases the rookies' value in the draft

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns, Raiders and Jets would be interested in Matt Schaub "if (when)" he is released.
There are rumblings the Texans are considering keeping Schaub, but he is most likely gone. The lack of available talent could give Schaub a shot to start in 2014, but he will more likely find himself in a back up role next season. Houston could save $3.6 million against the 2014 cap by releasing Schaub.

Philly Mag: Birds 24/7's Tim McManus reports the Eagles are interested in free agent DE Michael Johnson.
The Vikings are seen as the most likely landing spot for Johnson, but Philadelphia has cap room and needs a pass rusher. Free agent Mike Neal could be a more affordable option if Johnson's price proves too high. The Eagles only managed 37 sacks in 2013.

Free agent Ben Tate said that when healthy he is a "top-five running back in this league."
"When healthy" is an important caveat. Tate already has two IR stints in his four-year career, and has yet to survive a 16-game slate despite playing primarily as a backup. Tate is the best available running back in an underwhelming class, but his injury history makes it unlikely he breaks the bank in free agency.

Free agent Michael Vick is unlikely to sign with the Jaguars or Vikings after they re-signed Chad Henne and Matt Cassel, respectively.
PFT's Mike Florio reports that the Jaguars' "interest" in Vick may not have been genuine, and may have been floated to the media in an effort to get Henne to agree to terms. The Vikings were never really thought to be a realistic option, either. Other teams that could have interest in a veteran quarterback include the Jets, Bills, Texans, Bucs, and Raiders. The Jets make a lot of sense for Vick.

The Nashville Tennessean's Jim Wyatt "wouldn't be surprised" if the Titans "poked around" free agents Donald Brown and Ben Tate.
Both Tate and Brown have spent the past four years in the Titans' division. Brown shredded Tennessee in two games with the Colts last season, and would be a more logical committee partner for Shonn Greene. Tate would figure to become the Titans' clear feature back. He has far more talent than Greene.

The Miami Herald confirms the Dolphins have not had any recent contract talks with free agent LT Bryant McKinnie.
McKinnie was highly ineffective last year and isn't going to be re-signed before free agency, as expected. He looked to be near the end of the line with Miami and likely won't require more than a veteran minimum contract. Given his history of weight issues, McKinnie could struggle to find any interest on the open market.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins "reached out" to the representatives for free agents G/T Rodger Saffold and LT Jared Veldheer on Saturday.
LT Branden Albert is believed to be the Dolphins' top priority in free agency. They'd reportedly like to sign Saffold as a guard, though they're not opposed to Saffold playing left tackle. Veldheer and Eugene Monroe would be fallback options for Miami if it can't land Albert. We'd almost prefer both Veldheer and Monroe to an aging Albert. Offensive line is GM Dennis Hickey's main focus.

ESPN.com's John Keim considers the Redskins a possible landing spot for free agent Aqib Talib.
Talib has ties to secondary coach Raheem Morris, but wouldn't be a great fit with outside corners DeAngelo Hall and David Amerson both under contract. Washington may be better suited to make a run at Captain Munnerlyn for his ability to play the slot. Talib is reportedly looking to be paid as a "top-of-the-market" corner and could command over $8 million annually.

This smells like draft day trade and the new regime gauging Schaub versus a slew of former Pats QBs. Can you emphatically say Schaub isn't better than Hoyer or Mallett? To many a move needs to show improvement. With QBs though, at times a "dead man walking" attitude can mess up a team. I'm afraid, value or not, it's in their best interest to move on from Schaub. Please note I've read nothing of a bad attitude in him, just a vibe that the team is done with him.

Lance Moore was released so add him to this list of FAs. Jason Avant and Davone Bess too

Adam Caplan linking KC guard Jon Asamoah with ATL (the proverbial "NFL source" said it would be a small upset if he doesn't land there).

The NY Daily News reports free agent CB Alterraun Verner "isn't planning any visits," and intends to sign with a team "shortly after the market opens" on Tuesday.

It's possible he already has a deal in place with a team. The Redskins, Giants, Rams, Jets, and Vikings are among the clubs known to have interest in Verner. Verner had to love seeing the Packers give Sam Shields $39 million over four seasons on Saturday. Verner is younger than Shields, and a superior corner.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Colts are "nearing a deal" with free agent RCB Vontae Davis.

La Canfora says there's "every expectation" the sides will strike an accord by Monday. If so, Davis will never make it to Tuesday's open market. Davis is seeking a contract worth in excess of $8 million per year, and perhaps closer to $10 million annually after Sam Shields broke the bank in Green Bay. Davis is better than Shields. He's also younger, turning 26 years old this May.
