2014 NHL Offseason Thread - Free Agency Starts July 1st (1 Viewer)

Here’s why the NHL left HBO:

1. They wouldn’t do a second series, which the NHL wanted. HBO was actually cool with doing the Kings and Sharks, but wasn't interested in revisiting the Capitals for a Winter Classic "24/7."
One of the side effects of having the same teams in the Winter Classic over and over.

Dekeyser signs a 2 yr 4.375mil deal to stay in Det. I like the signing. It may be the end for Alfie though, as I think the Wings are near the cap, and his recent injury may be the end.

Teemu lays into Boudreau

Teemu Selanne has a book coming out in Finland. It’s a 320-page tome called “Teemu” that chronicles his life at and away from the rink. It appears to very much capture the essence of Teemu: Captivating and jovial, with occasional bursts of intense, aggressive professional pride.

One target of that pride: Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau, whom Selanne blasts as an ill-prepared oaf who lacks the respect of his players and, basically, was the reason Selanne both considered leaving the Ducks and eventually retiring after last season.

Finnish journalist Juha Hiitela translated a number of quotes from Selanne from the book, which was obtained by the LA Times. Among the most damning ones:

Selanne on Boudreau and the Ducks:

“It would have been wrong if we had won the Stanley Cup with coach like that.”

“You are as good as you your coach wants you to be. If we had any other coach, I’d still be playing.”

Selanne said that his feud with Boudreau ran so deep that he considered leaving the Ducks in 2013 to sign with the rival Los Angeles Kings or – and that sound you’re about to hear are thousands of hearts breaking in Manitoba – the Winnipeg Jets, the city where he first played in the NHL.

[ ]
He said Boudreau promised him power-play time and an average of 15 minutes of ice time in 2013-14, and that he wanted to see Selanne reach the 700 goal plateau.

“Season started well, but after that my time on ice declined, just like previous year. He didn’t keep any of his promises,” said Selanne.

According to the book, Selanne texted his wife and friends during intermission that the Ducks’ Game 7 performance against the Kings in the Western Conference Semifinal was “a f—king joke.”

Selanne and Boudreau clashed all season over his usage and ice time, although there was a bit of a reprieve after the star winger lit up the Olympic Games in Sochi. "I got to play with [Ryan] Getzlaf the next four games, scored two goals and four points. After that everything went back to way it was before."

Selanne spoke about confronting Boudreau after Game 4 of the Ducks’ series vs. the Dallas Stars last season.

"I yelled him right to his face what I was thinking. I ask what he has against me. I told him that since he became our coach, he has not respected me one bit. You never put me on ice when we play 5-on-3 or 4–on-4 or when we are one goal behind in the end of the game,” he said.

"Be honest for one time and answer! He just stammered that decisions we not his alone and it was a group decision."

This did not sit well with Teemu "I ask which group and he said GM and scouts. I yelled him ‘wow, what kind of a coach you are if you don’t even decide lineup!’”

Selanne continued: "He tried to skate away but I just yelled I wasn’t finish. I told Boudreau if you ever want to win something in a playoffs. you’re going to need me. Nobody else wants to win as much as me. It felt really good."

Finally, Selanne said for the first time in his career, the head coach didn’t meet the players at exit meetings. “He probably sensed that there was so many guys who would have just wanted to yell everything to him."

Anybody find it strange that Kessell said he's skated "10 times maybe all summer"? I assumed these guys worked out way more than that in the offseason.

offseason for NHL players is pretty short. I assume most don't skate much but train in other ways.

Ryan Johansen just scored 30 goals as a 21 year old while playing under 18min a game, why should he sign long term for under 6m? 6.5m doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

$32MM/6 or $46MM/8 years seem like pretty good offers for a young player with 1 good year under his belt. Not sure why they can't get something done if Columbus is already offering that much.

Does seem unrealistic to use guys like Kane, Toews, and Stamkos as comps.

the $6MM/2 offer that was reported does seem insulting though. Why not give him a better option for a bridge deal and give him a chance to earn the big long-term deal he wants?

Yeah if his agent is using those guys as comps already that's definitely unrealistic, but at least he's not using them as financial comps for his asking price for Johansen.

You don't hear much about incentive laden contracts and I'm not sure it the Collective Bargaining Agmts provide for such (perhaps they say you have to assume all incentives will be paid in figuring the salary cap number), but if they are, this seems like a good example for it to apply. Can base in on various statistics/ice time.

So the Hawks have less than 3 weeks to drop ~3M in salary. I figured they would have done it by now....little :oldunsure: over here.

What happens next year when those Kane and Toews extensions kick in?

Kind of tough when Duncan Keith is your 5th or 6th highest-paid player. That Hossa contract looks pretty crazy now.

The thought is that Sharp is traded at some point this year or the off season next year, Bickell might be in the same boat as well.

Regarding Keith, his contract is a few years old and he gave a hometown discount. If he signed now he would be in the 8s and Seabrook is due up in 2 seasons....going to be interesting that's for sure.

They'll just have to find a way to dominate with other role players surrounding them...

MIN G Josh Harding's off-ice injury is significant, likely to be out months as opposed to weeks. On crutches/in a boot. Tough break.
Harding reportedly kicked a wall and broke his foot in an off-ice altercation with a teammate. Russo said GM Fletcher was pissed that Russo knew about it before him and that they're already having to discuss the goalie situation again this early. Harding is suspended without pay. Dummy. Did anybody mention that the Wild finally agreed to terms with G Kuemper on a two-year one-way deal $1m/$1.5M?

Lol, guy's gonna be an above average starting goalie and he'll be barely making a mil a year.

Kuemper was already holding out so when he gained the Harding injury leverage I thought he'd get more. There has been talk on KFAN that Backstrom is 100% healthy. I hope so.

And we got Bryz back too. Practice? Who needs practice? http://www.hockeywilderness.com/2014/9/22/6826769/rusty-bryzgalov-impresses-in-wild-training-camp

Caps Winter Classic jersey(rumored to be)

Not terrible but I'm sure it will grow on me meaning I will own one. :lmao:
Just the W would've been cool, too much going on with Capitals, Stars and Stripes all thrown in there.
More on why they went with this style

The 2015 Capitals NHL Winter Classic jersey includes many elements from Capitals jerseys worn during the past five decades. The "Capitals" wordmark on the front of the jersey has been a hallmark of Caps jerseys throughout the past four decades, even through several redesigns. The stars on the front are also an element seen on many Capitals jerseys through the years, including the Capitals current jersey.

The primary color for the Capitals’ NHL Winter Classic uniform is vintage deep red to symbolize hockey’s deep roots in Washington. The stripes on the shoulders, waist and legs brings in elements of Washington professional hockey jerseys from the 1930’s, predating the Capitals’ formation in the 1970s. A large “W” on the front of the jersey, offset in blue to contrast the white Capitals wordmark, offers a unique look never seen before on Capitals jerseys. So they mashed them all together because they couldn't decide on one?! ;) They're ok, just very busy. Cool touch making the center of the W the monument.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Carolina Hurricanes center Jordan Staal has been helped off the ice with a right leg injury late in the third period of a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres.Staal was hurt Tuesday night when he was checked hard into the boards by defenseman Josh Gorges inside the Buffalo zone. Staal fell to the ice and lay on his side for several minutes while being treated by trainers.

He required help getting up and was unable to put any weight on his right leg.
ETA: broken bone in his leg. No timetable for return.

I know it's early, but word out of Blues training camp is that Jori Lehtera and Vladimir Tarasenko look like they've been playing together for years. Insane chemistry.

Something to think about if you guys do fantasy drafts. :coffee:
