Buzz builds for Taylor Lewan to Oakland at No. 5Posted by Michael David Smith on April 23, 2014, 4:50 PM EDT
Former Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan is looking like a candidate to be the Raiders’ first-round draft pick.![]()
Oakland owns the fifth overall pick, and Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune reports that the Raiders like Lewan better than either of the other top offensive tackles in this year’s draft, Greg Robinson of Auburn or Jake Matthews of Texas A&M.
That’s surprising, as most draft analysts view Robinson and Matthews as superior prospects to Lewan. It’s also surprising that we’re even talking about the Raiders using their first-round pick on an offensive tackle, seeing as they’ve already signed left tackle Donald Penn to a two-year, $9.6 million contract and signed right tackle Austin Howard to a five-year, $30 million contract.
But the Raiders are often unconventional, so if their draft board looks different than most teams’ draft boards, that’s par for the course.
Most mock drafts haven’t had Lewan in the Top 5, but ESPN’s Mel Kiper suggested today that the Rams could take Lewan with the second overall pick. So it’s possible that Lewan won’t even be there for the Raiders at No. 5. But if he is, don’t be surprised if the Raiders take him.
That writer needs to do more reasearch. Austin Howard is going to be playing at RG. So Lewan would more then likely be competing against Menelik Watson for the RT position. Which may not be a bad thing. Give Watson a bit more time to develop. Who knows maybe one of them could start at LG this season. Something like, Penn, Watson, Wis, Howard, Lewan.Buzz builds for Taylor Lewan to Oakland at No. 5Posted by Michael David Smith on April 23, 2014, 4:50 PM EDT

I would chalk this up to being a smokescreen, esp. given this follow-up:That writer needs to do more reasearch. Austin Howard is going to be playing at RG. With week 4 being in London as well.ICON211 said:Really seems like the Raiders get screwed every year with the schedule. This year 3 of the first 4 are at 1 p.m. eastern.
ESPN's Paul Gutierrez believes Denarius Moore could be traded if the Raiders select Clemson WR Sammy Watkins in the draft.
Gutierrez called Watkins "Moore 2.0" and hinted the Raiders are fed up with Moore's inconsistency. Moore also may be surplus to requirements. Oakland added veteran James Jones in the offseason and has two young breakout candidates in Rod Streater and Andre Holmes in need of snaps. Moore finished 2013 with 47 catches, 695 yards, and five touchdowns in only 13 games.

Wow, just looked at the schedule...so, who do you guys like at QB - Mariota or Winston? With week 4 being in London as well.Really seems like the Raiders get screwed every year with the schedule. This year 3 of the first 4 are at 1 p.m. eastern.
True, but I do not think Donald lasts until 10.Atomic Punk said:I love the idea of a trade down with the Lions, getting Donald at 10 and an extra 2nd. Perfect scenario for the Raiders.

I don't think it is as much about need as it is that Donald is an impact player.. That is obvious from his body of work.Possibly, but not really sure if anyone picking before #10 really needs DT - TB, Min, Buf - so you would need another trade up for that to happen.
He'll likely be yours. As a Chargers fan I'd prefer your team wallow in mediocrity (I'm rooting for you guys to go 8-8) instead of getting the #1 pick but it looks like you may get it.HundleyWow, just looked at the schedule...so, who do you guys like at QB - Mariota or Winston? With week 4 being in London as well.Really seems like the Raiders get screwed every year with the schedule. This would be a great scenario. I've said it 1,000 times and I will say it 1,001..........I will take any scenario over Derek Carr at 5. Please God do not let this happen. My latest dream scenario...
Raiders trade with Tampa/Minny/Buff to move down from 5 to between 7-9, getting the other team's 2nd round pick in return. Use the new, lower 1st rd pick to take Aaron Donald.
Then if Teddy B drops, as many seem to be predicting now, they use the 2nd rounder received in the deal above as ammo to package with their existing 2nd rounder to move up into the tail end of the 1st to take Teddy. If we somehow were to come out of the first two rounds with Donald and Bridgewater without having to give up any of our later picks, with both on 5-year rookie deals, I'd do backflips.
Okay, back to reality. With the #5 pick, the Oakland Raiders select... Derrick Carr. Doh!
It was out before the draft last year that they loved Hayden.Watkins wouldn't surprise me (or disappoint me) but if recalling last year, Reggie did a pretty good job holding his cards close to his vest. NO ONE had them taking Hayden. I am smelling a smoke screen to bump up the value of the pick, then maybe trade down a couple slots and pick up second rounder. Lot's of interest in Watkins if he slips to 5 according to NFL Sirius.
Correct, came out the day before I believe. It was out before the draft last year that they loved Hayden.Watkins wouldn't surprise me (or disappoint me) but if recalling last year, Reggie did a pretty good job holding his cards close to his vest. Thanks for the post, S+B. Much appreciated. My only complaint is you don't post more.
Cleveland is the only team that might take Watkins, I think.
I'm pretty excited about Watkins. He plays WR like a linebacker, man. Just .....hair on fire. Looks like a savvy pro already.
I don't claim to have any of S&B's inside intel. But I think there's zero chance of that. It would require a future #1 pick and probably another good pick this year. With only their four picks in each of the first 4 rounds and the 3 7th rounders, picks are at a premium. If anything, like S&B said, look for the Raiders to wait on Watkins or trade down.Any chance the Raiders move up for Clowney?
