Beating UVA, Louisville, or UNC would be huge, but isn't necessary. If State wins the bolded games, they would be 20-11 (11-7)using this view of the RPI, State would be 9-11 against the RPI top 100. Considering that includes a win against a top 10 team in Duke (who may end up top 5), that should be enough.
I'm not saying it will be easy or should be expected to finish 7-3. But I think they would be in with that finish, and that does not include another marquee win. Like someone else posted recently, that season ending Syracuse game could be a big one for both teams.
In general I like Gott as our coach, but that has to reflect poorly on the coaching staff. Gott has proven he can draw enough talent and coach them well enough to compete against the best teams in college basketball. But he can't seem to coach them well enough to win many of those games.in games this season where State is up/down by four inside the 3:00 mark, the Wolfpack is 1-6
Using GT as an example, I'd rather have the guy that can get talent but can't coach (Hewitt) over the guy that can coach but can't even get the talent (Gregory).Haven't verified this but read this at SFN:

I lean this way also. Especially having seen State get burned in a coaching search in the not too distant past (Lowe). I assume the program's appeal to coaching candidates is higher now than it was after Sendek and Lowe, but not enough to assume certainty in getting a better coach than Gott.Using GT as an example, I'd rather have the guy that can get talent but can't coach (Hewitt) over the guy that can coach but can't even get the talent (Gregory).Haven't verified this but read this at SFN:

He is a rising star for sure but I think as long as Yow is there and Gott maintains the minimum standards (NCAA) then he is set for life.Archie Miller on future radar?I lean this way also. Many fans who have decided Gott isn't the answer want Archie. But, as with most fan bases, many State fans are unrealistic about the situation.Archie Miller on future radar?I lean this way also. He's in his 4th year and has made the tourney every year after a long absence under Lowe. He's shown he can recruit. He's won some big games. He was a couple points from an elite 8 appearance. The team looks pretty stacked for next year.
Yes, losing these close games sucks, but... perspective.
I defended Gott after the Miami game, i thought he put them in a good position to win and coached a good end game but they didn't make their shots.Haven't verified this but read this at SFN:

UNC has really surprised me this year, I thought they were middle of the pack talent and they're right in there (and they get UVA at home). Their front court is way tougher than I thought they would be.Good win for the Heels. Nice to see Britt stepping up off the bench.
Huge stretch for some of the top teams coming up.
Next 3 games:
UNC - @Louisville, vs Virginia, @BC
Duke - @ND, @Virginia, vs GT
Virginia - vs Duke, @UNC, vs Louisville
Louisville - vs UNC, @Miami, @Virginia
Virginia and Louisville have some HUGE games coming up. A darkhorse to win the conference could be ND. Outside of their 2 games left against Duke and 1 against Louisville, their schedule is pretty favorable the rest of the way. While the rest of the top of the conference is slugging it out, ND has it pretty easy.
The 3/4 court chuck play worked, except for the fact that Ralston Turner didn't do his job. If you watch the replay, all 3 other players, including Turner, are supposed to come towards the ball. Someone set a screen for Martin and he went long. His guy was way beat, but Turner didn't do his job coming back to the ball, and Grant (who was covering Turner) was able to read the play and make up the distance.I defended Gott after the Miami game, i thought he put them in a good position to win and coached a good end game but they didn't make their shots.Haven't verified this but read this at SFN:

The ND game was ridiculous. Putting aside the huge comeback, how in the world does a guy chuck the ball 3/4 of the way down the court inbounding with a 2 point lead, 12 seconds, and in the bonus? Just get the ball in and make your free throws, the game is yours. That was the lowest percentage thing you could possibly do. They got one more shot at the end of regulation and I know they didn't have a lot of time but it didn't seem like they even had a play or a plan, just another heave down court. I was pretty disappointed. I was hoping the Pack was going to make the tourney this year but they're just unable to close close games. They're getting killed in the last 2 minutes in close games and that really points to coaching.
Carolina battled through their early season struggles and seems to have righted the ship. They can really make a statement with wins over L'ville and Virginia. Both are going to be tough games, but if they can just get 1 of those 2, I'll be really happy.UNC has really surprised me this year, I thought they were middle of the pack talent and they're right in there (and they get UVA at home). UVA still has the inside track but I'm pretty surprised that ND and UNC are sitting in a better position than Duke and Louisville. Gonna be a great double header on Saturday.
No, Gott called a much lower percentage play instead of inbounding and shooting free throws, that's why he is an idiot. If he calls a play to set a pick and inbound to Turner who shoots almost 90% from the line and Turner misses his free throws and then ND comes back and ties or wins with 7-10s left then he made a good coaching decision and the guys didn't make the plays. The 3/4 court chuck play worked, except for the fact that Ralston Turner didn't do his job. If Martin catches the ball and goes in for a slam Gott is a genius. Instead, a player makes a mistake and Gott is an idiot.
That was on Lacey and Turner, not Gott. That doesn't excuse Gott for plenty of other lousy decisions in this game, most notably not putting Cat Barber on Grant to open the second half or at least much earlier in the second half. The 3/4 court chuck play worked, except for the fact that Ralston Turner didn't do his job. I still don't see how the right coaching move there is not to inbound the ball and shoot the free throws? You're up 2, 12 seconds. Why take that chance? Oh, I know why you don't take that chance, because it increases your chance of losing the game which is exactly what happened. Gott's fault. That was on Lacey and Turner, not Gott. "Well, you have to get the ball in, we talked about that in the timeout," said Gottfried. "We've got a two-point lead, and the play that we set up, the first look is to see if we can get a breakout layup. If it's there and it's wide open, we want to go to it. "The problem we had is we didn't execute the other guys on the floor. Both guys on the sides of the floor, Caleb and Ralston, those guys have to do a great job of coming to the ball because if they aren't guarded we need to go right to them. Get the ball in Ralston's hands, he's a good foul shooter. Cat set the screen for Cody going deep.
"Notre Dame didn't have a timeout left, we knew that in our timeout. If you can get a layup out of the play, you go up four, they have no timeouts left, it's sayonara ... it's going to be difficult. The problem we had is we had poor execution. Our wing guy, Ralston, instead of going to the ball he went backwards and his guy was able to take off from the sideline because the two defenders from Notre Dame [in the middle of the floor] bit on it pretty good and Cody was open."
"It's one of those things as a group we have to do a better job of," Gottfried added. "I have to do a better job as a coach of making sure in practice we execute it better. it just so happens in that particular game it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to turn out."
Gottfried added that it was probably Grant's biggest play of the game.
"He played it like Richard Sherman from the Seahawks. He went across the floor. I would have loved to have Jerian Grant closer to the baseline... but like I told our guys, one play doesn't win or lose the game for you. Not at all."
At first glance, that statement just seems so absurd, but it's also oddly understandable. Hard to believe a guy can put up 22-17 and you're asking, "can you do any more."Damn...that hurt.
Not putting it all on the big man but damn...Okafor missed 3 of 4 free throws at the end and then missed on a great matchup against a guy who's six inches shorter than him.
Then Sheed missing free throw with 9 seconds hurt.
But ND should've never been close or even up at that point...10 point lead that late should've been enough.
Team seems to have some focus issues at times.
ND hitting that miracle with a minute left...with clock expiring and ball being poked out...ugh...luck of the Irish.
All things considered probably one of his worst losses since he's been here. Are we still defending Gott in here? Dude is a piss poor coach and always seems to lose the x and o's battle. I wonder if his off the court stuff will eventually get him canned.

Pretty frustrating.
DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon has been dismissed from the Duke basketball program as announced by head coach Mike Krzyzewski Thursday. Sulaimon remains in good academic standing and is expected to finish the spring semester.
“Rasheed has been unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program,” said Krzyzewski. “It is a privilege to represent Duke University and with that privilege comes the responsibility to conduct oneself in a certain manner. After Rasheed repeatedly struggled to meet the necessary obligations, it became apparent that it was time to dismiss him from the program.”
