2015 Oakland Raiders Thread (1 Viewer)

Remember all of the pre-draft talk (from Mayock and others) about how the Raiders should take Kevin White over Cooper? Well let me just say..... WHEW!

We never would have heard the end of that.

Classic case of people falling in love with measurable so rather than on field football ability. Copper is a stud.

It was never even close IMO. If you couldn't tell Cooper was a better prospect than White then you have no business scouting.

Don't give a second thought to the low YPA for Carr. Too much was made of that last year as it is.

That was the worst set of weapons in the league, and as terrible as they were, they were even worse at YAC'ing. Their unquestioned YAC superstar was McFadden, who was 67th in the league. One other guy on the team cracked the top 100. Barely. He had nobody who could do anything with the ball, anywhere on the field, except for the handful of plays Murray was on the field.

Just by virtue of having something resembling a varsity OC, together with radically improved targets at almost every position, that number's coming way up this season.
I understand all of that, as well as the fact that this was just the first preseason game, and I agree that this year that metric should increase significantly however to start off exactly where you left off, worse actually, is just...disappointing.

YPA is a pretty significant indicator of QB success, IMO he has to get it over 7 at the very least.

San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor said the city is willing to host the Raiders if the team needs a temporary home, should they decide to move forward with the Carson, Calif. stadium plans.

Sources reveal that Raiders owner Mark Davis is “beyond frustrated” with the City of Oakland’s efforts to retain the franchise.

Patience grasshopper.

All you needed to say.

Good times ahead for Carr and the gang. A nice, efficient, effective passer with improved targets literally everywhere on the field, and an improved OL to boot. Try to go wrong. I dare you.

Cannot wait to watch some football.

My life circumstances have changed, I'm living in jolly old London now. Sky Sports has the NFL package (and it's cheap as heck) but it's not getting hooked up until next week. :wall:

Having read everything I could tho, I am happy they started well this preseason.

Really hoping we can get a pass rush going. I really liked Shelby Harris last year, I thought he flashed more than Mayowa in the preseason games, and thought he could have made the final roster. Looking forward to watching the Heeney kid as well.

If you can check out the games at Wembley this year. Its a cool stadium with shopping around it. the NFL sets it up quite nice with surrounding activities on game days and the tube is just down the street. I saw the Raiders get pounded by Miami last year there. Surprisingly, the Raiders are the most represented team around in London during my last year here.

Steve Corkran has resurfaced, looks like he bought into a half-a##ed site called RadierBeat (brutal name), and has a final roster preview (my pointless drivel in RED):

Quarterbacks: Derek Carr, Christian Ponder and Matt McGloin.

Comments: Carr is the unquestioned starter only one year after he entered training camp as the presumptive backup to Matt Schaub. Ponder is far more experienced than McGloin, and he has played in offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s system before. McGloin has a decided edge over undrafted rookie Cody Fajardo.

Update: Carr still has nothing to worry about in terms of his stranglehold on the starting job. McGloin outperformed Ponder in the Raiders exhibition opener, when he completed 10 of 11 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Ponder fared well, too. It’s still too close to call as far as who the primary backup is going to be, but Fajardo remains the odd-man out.

Not too shabby at QB, really. Begins and ends here to see if this team can push for .500

Running backs: Latavius Murray, Roy Helu Jr., Trent Richardson, Taiwan Jones, Marcel Reece and Jamize Olawale.

Comments: Murray has been anointed the heir apparent to Darren McFadden, who signed with the Dallas Cowboys in free agency after six years as the Raiders lead back. Helu Jr. is being envisioned as the third-down, situational back. Richardson was brought in out of curiosity and the fact the former first-round draftee doesn’t cost much if he makes the team. Jones’ ticket to the roster has nothing to do with his ability as a running back and everything to do with his skills as a standout coverage guy on punts and kickoffs. Reece and Olawale are versatile players who have carved out spots based upon that in recent seasons. Michael Dyer and George Atkinson III are long-shots.

Update: Murray showed flashes of brilliance against the Rams and did nothing to change anyone’s opinion about him being the clear-cut starter. Richardson didn’t look particularly sharp in a reserve role. Jones showed nice burst and explosiveness. Helu Jr. is battling an undisclosed injury that has cost him several days of practice. Don’t be surprised if the Raiders go with only five backs and use the other spot elsewhere. If they keep six, it’s conceivable that Dyer gets the nod over Richardson.

I really don't see the angle in carrying two fullbacks. We could use another DL or DB instead. Screw TRich, where's the upside? Give me some Dyer or Jones as 3rd back.

Wide receivers: Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, Rod Streater, Andre Holmes, Brice Butler and Trindon Holliday.

Comments: Cooper, Crabtree and Streater are locks. Holmes and Butler showed enough the past two seasons to merit roster spots this season. Holliday gets the nod over undrafted free agent Josh Harper, who caught passes from Carr at Fresno State, based upon his punt and kick-return skills. Harper also is eligible for the practice squad. Kenbrell Thompkins, Seth Roberts, Kris Durham, Milton Williams and Austin Willis are on the outside, searching for a way on the roster.

Update: Cooper and Crabtree looked the part as starters in the Rams game. Streater just returned from a mysterious injury, and he hasn’t played in a game yet. Holmes is out for a month or so with a broken hand. Butler caught a touchdown against the Rams. Those five seem safe to make the roster. The final spot either goes to Holliday, who is the leading candidate to return kicks and punts, or from among a group that includes Kris Durham, Kenbrell Thompkins and Seth Roberts.

Probably won't be popular to say this, but I'm in favor of keeping Holliday for returns. If we have injuries, we can pull Thompkins, Durham , or whoever off the street.

Tight ends: Mychal Rivera, Lee Smith and Clive Walford.
Comments: Rivera’s receptions jumped from 38 to 58 and his yards from 407 to 534 last season as compared to his rookie season in 2013. He still has room to grow as a receiver, with Carr certain to rely upon him more and more. Walford was selected in the third round, and the Raiders envision Walford pushing Rivera for playing time, if not the starting spot, before long. Smith was signed in free agency to provide the kind of consistent and effective blocking that Rivera isn’t capable of doing on an every-down basis. Brian Leonhardt and rookie Gabe Holmes face an uphill battle at a position that seems well stocked.

Update: Not much has changed with this position group, even though Walford has been healthy enough for only two practices and the Rams game. Holmes is making a push for a roster spot, but he likely will get caught up in a numbers game.

Big fan of this group, Rivera always probably made more sense as a receiving 2nd TE, although I think we haven't seen his best. Practice Squad for Holmes I hope, but with Rivera and Walford, tough to see a long term payoff here.

Offensive linemen: Donald Penn, Gabe Jackson, Rodney Hudson, Khalif Barnes, Austin Howard, J’Marcus Webb, Jon Feliciano, Menelik Watson and Matt McCants. Comments: This marks the end of the line for Tony Bergstrom, who was the first player drafted by general manager Reggie McKenzie the year McKenzie joined the Raiders, in 2012. Bergstrom hasn’t panned out at guard or tackle, and he isn’t bound to get much better at the age of 28. Lamar Mady, Mitch Bell, Dan Kistler, Quinterrius Eatmon and Anthony Morris aren’t long for the Raiders, though Morris is a prime candidate for the practice squad.

Update: Penn, Jackson, Hudson, Webb and Watson are penciled in as the starters, from left to right. Howard is competing against Watson at right tackle, but he isn’t making much of a case to this point. The only possible change in the original projections is Bergstrom, who has been working as a backup center. If Bergstrom makes the team, he does so at the expense of McCants, Howard or Feliciano, and in large part so that McKenzie saves face.

Corkran showing a little of the shade that lost him all credibility in the Bay Area. I'm feeling pretty good about this line, clearly the right hand side is weaker, and I wonder if the plan of Webb/Watson holds up, or if it winds up being Howard/Watson, or Webb/Watson. Feliciano, it would be great if he made push to start by next year. It looks like one of Reggie's moves won't work, either the Howard signing or Watson pick. Left tackle is the early leader for priority #1 next offseason.

Defensive linemen: Justin Tuck, Dan Williams, Justin Ellis, Mario Edwards Jr., C.J. Wilson, Denico Autry, Benson Mayowa and Max Valles.

Comments: Tuck, Williams, Ellis and Edwards Jr. are locks. Linebacker Khalil Mack’s pass-rush prowess and edge-setting ability against the run lessens the need for the Raiders to keep another natural defensive end on the roster. Williams and Ellis are the only players listed as defensive tackles to make the roster. However, Wilson can move inside if needed, and Edwards Jr. played inside at Florida State. Third-year tackle Stacy McGee gets caught up in the numbers game. Rookie Leon Orr is an intriguing prospect, but he likely winds up on the practice squad so that he gets much-needed time to develop. Shelby Harris, Gary Wilkins and Ricky Lumpkin simply don’t make the cut.

Update: Harris and Lumpkin looked good on a few plays against the Rams. McGee and Orr aren’t going quietly, either. Still, for any of those guys to make the roster, one of their current linemates has to go. Don’t see any change here.

I think this may be right, but I'm rooting for Harris, hope he gets some PT in the next two weeks. Orr to the PS makes sense. I know Wilson is versatile, but at some point, I'd like to see a young DT boot him off the team. Don't have a strong feeling on Autry or Mayowa, just haven't seen much.

Linebackers: Khalil Mack, Curtis Lofton, Sio Moore, Malcolm Smith, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Ben Heeney and Neiron Ball.

Comments: The Raiders signed Lofton and Smith in free agency with the express purpose of using them as key defensive players. Lofton is slated to fill the void in the middle created by the departure of Nick Roach (concussion) and Miles Burris (released). Moore is back in the starting lineup as long as his surgically repaired hip holds up. Smith and Armstrong make the roster because of their versatility and special-teams prowess. Josh Shirley, Horace Miller and Chase Williams are practice-squad eligible. Look for one or more of these four to land there and get a longer look down the road..

Update: Mack now is listed as an end. However, for the purposes of this exercise, we’ll keep him as a linebacker. Rookies Heeney and Ball looked impressive in their debuts. Shirley had an impressive sack-fumble play against the Rams. He’s going to need to do a lot more than that to carve out a roster spot. The original seven hold on to their spots, unless Moore keeps having difficulty bouncing back from offseason hip surgery.

Best our LBs have looked in years. I thought Ball was going to sit out all year, and he's been practicing and playing well, go figure. I wonder if Heeney can push for the MLB job at some point.

Defensive backs: DJ Hayden, Charles Woodson, TJ Carrie, Nate Allen, Keith McGill, Brandian Ross, Larry Asante and Jonathan Dowling.

Comments: There isn’t a lot of depth here, but keep in mind that Taiwan Jones is available in a pinch. Also, at least one or two defensive backs likely will be stashed away on the practice squad. Going light on numbers at defensive back owes to the need to keep Jones and Trindon Holliday on the roster for their special-teams ability. Far more defensive backs hopefuls get cut than make the 53-man roster — James Dockery, Neiko Thorpe, Dexter McDonald, Rob Daniel, Ras-I Dowling, SaQwan Edwards, Jimmy Hall, Tevin McDonald and Chimdi Chekwa. Dexter McDonald, a seventh-round draft pick in May, is another player seemingly headed to the practice squad.

Update: As expected, this position group is the one in most flux and subject to surprise moves. Hayden, Woodson, Carrie, Allen and McGill appear to be locks. Thorpe and Dexter McDonald are making strong pushes for inclusion on the opening-game roster. For now, we’ll go with those two over Ross and Jonathan Dowling.

Maybe the most questionable part of the roster? Lots of youth, and by the end of the year, we'll know where we stand. Need to find a replacement for Woodson next year--I think. He may play forever.

Not too crazy about sharing a stadium with the Chargers, would much rather share the Rams. But the city of Oakland and its fan base are stuck in the denial stage of grief. It's sad.
I think we're stuck in the "we're not giving one more dime to you dweebs" phase.
More cities need to take this attitude. Let the billionaires finance their own stadiums.
Agreed. The shame is, Mark Davis isn't Paul Allen, and would like to stay in Oakland, I believe.

I don't believe the Davis family can build their own stadium.

@VicTafur: Told #Raiders now over 40,000 season tix sold for this season in Oakland. Most since team came back in '95. Impressive w/ future up in air
I was up in No Cal back when we were good, early 2000's. For the life of me, I could not figure out why the stadium was so empty with a team doing so well. I did not have the money then to pony up for season tickets but I got GREAT tickets for the KC game that Tim Brown returned the punt return on. 45 yard line 8 rows up. It was like Tim ran to me and then cut up the field for the TD. Freaking awesome play. Those tickets only cost me like $200.

Derek Carr with 80 plus yards rushing in 5 games last year.....7.0 YPA

Derek Carr with less than 80 yards rushing.........4.8 YPA

I'm telling you, getting Latavius Murray going is the key to developing the gunslinger we know Carr can be.

I don't believe the Davis family can build their own stadium.
How was Al Davis - an owner from the beginning of the league - not a multi-billionaire?
The beginning of the AFL, yes. Al Davis owned the Raiders in a partnership and used clever, perhaps underhanded, means to gain executive control over the others. He wasn't a guy who just bought a hugely valuable team. He was a coach/GM/commish. Without selling the team, the family is poor relative to other owners.

That was me diggin' at Chaka a little bit. :P

I just don't get the sense from Carr that he doesn't trust his arm, the way other dink and dunk guys seem to. I think they wanted to keep him healthy and played it (maybe too) safe last year. Plus his targets last year were awful, not to be understated.

Raider Twitter is killing Hayden. I'm rooting for him. Hasn't gotten the benefit of the doubt from the jump. Corkran isn't even worth reading.

Hayden got picked on mercilessly. Didn't see much pass rush with the first team either. It was nice to see an active MLB like Lofton flying around the field.

I'm pretty excited for Carr/Cooper/Murray trio. Anyone know why Crabtree wasn't playing?

Anyone know why Crabtree wasn't playing?
I'm pretty sure I saw him in the huddle once (with the starters). But he got no targets that I saw. I was thinking he would be a value very late in drafts but is he going to be a factor in this passing game or not?

I wouldn't use the 1st or 2nd preseason games as a way to determine if someone is going to be a value or not in fantasy land. He did get a target on 1 play that was designed to go to him but it was incomplete. The 3rd preseason game is the one to watch as the starters typically play into the 3rd quarter.

Levi Damien:

The first roster cutdown date is fast approaching which means the Raiders will have to make some tough decisions about who stays and who gets the ax. No decisions will be more difficult than those which must be made along the defensive line.

It's rather unexpected that the Raiders would have tough cuts along the defensive line considering how weak the entire group seemed to be this offseason. But while this group may not be considered one of the best in the league, they have proven to be quite deep, making the decisions on who to keep all the more tough.
Here is what the Raiders are looking at:

Justin Tuck and Dan Williams are for sure starters with Khalil Mack playing a lot of defensive end as well as linebacker.

Then there is second-year nose tackle Justin Ellis and this year's second round pick Mario Edwards who should see time at defensive end as well as defensive tackle.
After that things get more muddy.

The remaining defensive linemen on the team currently are DT Ricky Lumpkin, DE Benson Mayowa, DE Denico Autry, DE Shelby Harris, DL C.J. Wilson, DT Stacy McGee, DE Max Valles, and DT Leon Orr

Mayowa and Wilson both started games last season, mostly due to injuries, with both having their moments. Autry, Harris, Lumpkin, and McGee all appeared in games last season. Valles is a rookie sixth round pick and Orr is an undrafted free agent.

Typically you see a team carry no more than eight defensive linemen. However, Mayowa and Mack have been working at both DE and linebacker this year so let's bump the number up to nine.

With five of those positions set, that means the Raiders must pick four from the other eight defensive linemen.

If you go based solely on NFL experience, Wilson, Mayowa, and McGee would be shoo-ins. Wilson in particular signed a new 2-year deal this offseason to return to the team.

On the other hand, the coaching staff is brand new and they are going to put a lot of weight into what they have seen this training camp and preseason.

In the first two preseason games, Ricky Lumpkin, Denico Autry, Shelby Harris, Benson Mayowa, and Leon Orr have all had their moments. And Max Valles was a draft pick which usually afford some leeway in terms of immediate impact.

You see the dilemma? Four spots for eight players and a case can be made for all of them.In my 53-man roster projection I have Mayowa, Lumpkin, Autry, and Harris as the ones who make the roster.

Mayowa is a former undrafted free agent who came up with the Seahawks under Ken Norton Jr. He is being used in a variety of ways, including as a special teams ace, and has looked very good in those roles in training camp and preseason. He is the Raiders' leading tackler this preseason along the defensive line. He leads in tackles (5) and QB hits (2).

Autry has also shined all through camp and carried it over to the preseason. He is tied for second among Raiders' defensive linemen in tackles (4) this preseason and has a tackle for loss as well.

Lumpkin was called up to replace former sixth round pick Stacy McGee late last season and outplayed him. In just three games, Lumpkin eclipsed McGee's stats over the first 11 games. Lumpkin continues to win that battle this preseason, and earned early snaps on the defense because of it.

Harris was a seventh round pick in 2014 and showed some flashes in last year's camp. He was put on the practice squad most of last season and looks to have stepped up his game this offseason as well. He has been around the ball all preseason and is the only player on the team with a sack, tackle for loss, QB hit, pass defended, and fumble recovery.

Valles may be a draft pick, but he has not stood out in camp or preseason from what I've seen. He went in the sixth round because by most accounts, he was very raw. Another year of college would have done him a lot of good. The NFL equivelant is the practice squad. But if the team decides they want to keep him, they would have to decide whether to cut Shelby Harris or Denico Autry.

Orr's situation is he could just be an odd man out. This undrafted rookie has played well at times, and he looks deserving of a roster spot. But he would have to beat out more established players to do it. He could be the wildcard in all of this. Then again, so could many of these guys.

I took my best shot in predicting who the Raiders keep along the defensive line. They too will take their best shot at keeping the right 8 or 9 guys, while hoping a couple of them make it through waivers to be placed on the practice squad.

The third preseason game could help make that decision easier. Then again, it could make it even more difficult.

If this offensive line continues doing the right things, I might get pretty excited.

In watching that Vikes game, Feliciano was clearly better than the scrubs he was pushing around in the 2nd half. Not saying he's ready for starting job, but he looks like a keeper.

Cutting Jonathan Dowling felt like a statement to me. He got released, and there was immediately some buzz about attitude. They didn't NEED to cut him, but I wonder if they figured he was a long shot anyway to make the 53, and thought maybe he could do some good on the way out the door by scaring a pretty young, impressionable tream. Del Rio's comments about Sio make me think the same thing, like it's all about motivation. Sio is probably a tad overrated by Raider fans, Del Rio putting a scare in him could be him letting Sio know he's no superstar yet.

It's probably wrong and premature and delusional and likely indicates that I am off my meds but I am becoming increasingly optimistic about drafting Raiders at fantasy skill positions.

Is it crazy to think Carr could finish close to QB 1 value (my league is super flex) or Murray the same as a RB? Cooper keeps landing as a WR 2 on my boards AND SO DOES CRABTREE (well he comes close)!!!

WTH?!?!? These are Raiders. When did I land in Bizarro World? Or is it the 70s again and no one told me?

Sorry Chaka,

I think you may be delusional. There is some real value on the Raiders relative to ADP, but if you are expecting anything like the badasses of the 1970's, you're in for a big letdown.

I like the Raiders this year. I particularly like Murray as a potential RB1 and Cooper as a potential WR2. I think these guys have surprising good seasons.

Carr I'm more cautious about. He could be a decent QB2 but I don't see QB1.
