McCarthy can have this kind of play calling and has shown in the past. What he needs to realize is that running shorter routes is a good thing as it eats up the clock, usually are more likely to be completed and keeps D rested. He just falls in love with these deep run routes and big play philosophy which has killed the offense over last couple years.McCarthy called a great game last night. That's the first time in a long time that I saw he thinking outside the box and try some new things. It's nice to know that he can still adapt to what personnel he has available to him. Not quite sure why that didn't happen last year and why Montgomery didn't see much action until the Dallas game. Maybe it's not all doom and gloom after all.
Isn't that what we saw Thursday night?Right, it's basic football 101. Draw the defense up by hitting them with jabs over and over, then bam!
Yes but can McCarthy drop his ego at the door and do it for the rest of the season. This will be very big if the Packers are to make the playoffs and have a deep run. With the Vikings loss now the division isn't even a reach of now.Isn't that what we saw Thursday night?

I'm not so sure that falls on McCarthy. My hunch is the guy calling the shots for the offense, #12, has more say over where the ball goes than McCarthy. Perhaps it was Rodgers that was patient and recognized where they could make the most out of the offense?McCarthy can have this kind of play calling and has shown in the past. Even if we have a RB threat he should keep using the short passing game and compliment it with a run and play action to keep teams guessing. He can get big plays off play action and double move routes that gets a CB guessing.
Why not? I'd take Montgomery one on one right now, and heck, Cobb too. They can make people miss in space. My concern is you can't consistently get all those yards after the catch against good defenses. But I guess we'll see how it works out.
If Jordy can't make plays down the field I'd seriously look at making him a third down and red zone package player only for now.
Might be back in December.Randall had surgery today on his injured groin. He's really taking this faking injury thing a bit far. What a coward.
I think he needs to do it, but if that's all he does, teams will solve it. I think this offense needs all hands on deck. I think that backs besides Montgomery need to deliver. We need contribution from Davis and whoever else they have. Jared Cooks and James Starks most likely won't be back until maybe the Redskins game.Yes but can McCarthy drop his ego at the door and do it for the rest of the season. I guessed wrong. He's still not a very good player. Maybe I was wrong to question his character to that extent. However he does not show much courage on the field. Doesn't mean he's a faker I guess.Randall had surgery today on his injured groin. He's really taking this faking injury thing a bit far. What a coward.
Have to have the corners back...this allows them to try and bring pressure (which is non-existent when Clay is out). They played better yesterday than they, and we, had any right to expect. I was proud of the effort given the gutting of the roster due to injuries. This season might yet be salvaged but we are going to need to see some good news on the injury front, and that damn soon.
Ted and Mike's bungled personnel management probably cost them in this one.
Injuries injuries injuries. At some point does this not fall on coaching or something?
This team probably isn't going anywhere this season. They couldn't beat an Atlanta team that was without it's premier weapon. I didn't watch the first half. But they looked mediocre in the second half to be honest. Rodgers missing guys left and right. The clock management at the end of the game was once again weak.
I just think this team is what it is. They are 30-17-1 and trending down over the last three season. Over the last two seasons they are 14-10. I'd expect they finish around 9-7, maybe get in the playoff, maybe not. They won't get past the divisional round.
This is why the Seattle debacle of 2014 is so tough for me to swallow. They just absolutely blew it. They had the team. They just gave it away. The team hasn't been the same since and I don't see them returning to that level of play (12-4) with McCarthy until they get some real true studs. They are playing with spare parts at DB, WR, RB right now. The starters coming back are weak at CB and RB (Lacy is decent, Starks is average at best). They really need a shot in the arm. Ted hasn't been able to provide that in about 5 years.
Julius Peppers' signing has been a two edged sword. On the one hand, he's a great player and I'm sure he's respected in the locker room. On the other, he motioned for Burnett to go down on the pick return vs. Seattle. His contract now is so large they had to let Heyward, House, and Williams go. The replacements for those players stink (looking at you Randall) and the window is closing (closed already maybe).
They probably win against Indy, but I don't know about Tennessee. Seems they match well with them. But when you are questioning whether they can beat bottom feeders, you have to look at everything.
Team needs.CB - If Shields is done, they don't have a good one.
RB - Come on Ted. This is just a terrible job here.
WR - We've probably seen the best from Jordy. Love him but he's older now and he just doesn't look the same. The chances of him returning to pre-injury form are slim. Did Adams break any tackles yesterday?
Agreed...and Adams did break several tackles yesterday as well.Oh come on. Really? Name an NFL team that would lose their top two running backs, then just have the next stud waiting in reserve? That doesn't happen in the NFL. At CB, based on what? You've ragged on a second year player that just had surgery. You have no idea about this position right now, you just don't. With three guys out, evaluate who is playing. Gunter and Goodson were solid against Atlanta. You always need corners in today's NFL, so I will agree there is no harm in adding talent.
At WR, I thought Allison and Davis showed well in the game, and both could have roles moving forward. Nelson is a work in progress. You can write him off, but most guys his age take longer to get back from an ACL. I still think he's got some left. As far as Adams, his strength is not the short passing game and making guys miss. He had to play there because their preferred players (Montomery/Cobb) were both out. He filled in admirably, but he isn't going to be needed there going forward. He'll get back to playing downfield where he belongs.
They just went toe to toe with "the most explosive offense in the NFL" and did it with a severely, and I mean severely, depleted roster. No reason for doom and gloom.
The offense showed well. The defense let them down in the end, but there was a lot to like.
No? KC, New England, New Orleans Pittsburgh, Seattle and Arizona did exactly that just last season.Man in the yellow hat said:Oh come on. Really? Name an NFL team that would lose their top two running backs, then just have the next stud waiting in reserve? That doesn't happen in the NFL.
You have to be joking with this crap. Keep rooting for this team's demise. One of the most successful GM/Coach combos in team history, and you can't wait to push them out the door. Be careful what you wish for.No? KC, New England, New Orleans Pittsburgh, Seattle and Arizona did exactly that just last season.
Those are just off the top of my head. Everybody gets injuries. Great teams have plan b, c, and d ready.
Hell do you even remember who started for New England in the Super Bowl? Was he even active until Dion Lewis got hurt?
lol oops. I get confused sometimes. My point remains. All teams have injuries.Well I do remember who was in the Super Bowl...
Plan B: James StarksNice deflection. You remind me of my wife. Pretty tough to argue facts so you attack the messenger.
You know what else they all have in common? None are quality NFL running backs.Plan B: James Starks
Plan C: Ty Montgomery
Plan D: Don Jackson
What do they all have in common? They all got injured and missed time. But by all means, continue to pontificate and make believe the situations are similar. You don't seem interested in facts, that's for damn sure.
Pro Football Focus disagreed, ranking Green Bay #11 at the running back position heading into this year, ahead of the Seahawks and Patriots. You know what else they all have in common? None are quality NFL running backs.
Lacy is quality. But it doesn't take a crystal ball to predict a 30 year old mediocre running back and a wide receiver aren't going to be adequate depth if your overweight starter gets hurt (again).

6. Green Bay Packers
If Le’Veon Bell was the most complete running back in the NFL last season, then Eddie Lacy was a close second. Lacy graded inside the top 10 at the running back position for running (+7.6), receiving (+8.4), and pass blocking (+3.6). The former second-round pick has started his career with back-to-back seasons with top-5 overall grades. While Lacy is a three-down back, the Packers still substitute heavily and James Starks is a more than competent backup. The fifth-year back has averaged an impressive 2.9 and 3.0 yards after contact per attempt the last two seasons.
Very easy to look back now and run down James Starks. However, he showed absolutely no signs of decline last year. And it is also clear Montgomery was part of the backfield plan all along, which is why they carried seven wrs and only two rbs. He was going to be involved in the pass catching back roll, just like Cobb before him.
I'd rather the team carry a 3rd RB rather than a 3rd TE like Jeff Perillo. I'd really like them to get a 3rd down back like a James White or Chris Thompson. Those guys are valuable weapons that can be had for cheap yet the Packers don't seem interested in adding such a player. Maybe Montgomery can fit that role when everyone is back healthy. No? KC, New England, New Orleans Pittsburgh, Seattle and Arizona did exactly that just last season.

While I'm not all doom and gloom I do think when you have the best QB in the league over a 5 plus year period 1 Superbowl victory and crushing playoff defeats every other year is a little underwhelming. I realize this book hasn't been completely written but if the trio of Ted/Mike and Aaron don't have another Superbowl appearance I along with most Packer fans would be extremely disappointed. You have to be joking with this crap. Keep rooting for this team's demise. One of the most successful GM/Coach combos in team history, and you can't wait to push them out the door. Be careful what you wish for.
Depends on a few things...I think ST plays the biggest role in whether they kept a TE or RB.I'd rather the team carry a 3rd RB rather than a 3rd TE like Jeff Perillo. I'd really like them to get a 3rd down back like a James White or Chris Thompson. In fairness they did try with Jonathon Franklin. Me, I love a Darren Sproles type. I kind of thought TT and MM were hoping to fill part of that as have the Patriots, with Montgomery, Cobb, and Abbredaris. Fairly quick guys running short, precise routes in combination, like Edelman and Ammendola.I'd rather the team carry a 3rd RB rather than a 3rd TE like Jeff Perillo. Not if he's pissing blood after heavy usage.Depends on a few things...I think ST plays the biggest role in whether they kept a TE or RB.
I agree with liking to have a 3rd down type back...but basically, Montgomery is that now and probably more dangerous than most 3rd down backs.
After a hit...sure. i guess we ahould cut Cobb took after his injury took him out of the playoff game last year. Not if he's pissing blood after heavy usage.
No idea what that means. I just try to hold people accountable. Most fans don't. The rah rah fans on this board think Mike and Ted and Aaron can do nothing wrong. It makes me roll my eyes when fans have no objectivity.SAbertooth,
I thank you. Whenever you post I am put in mind of Positively 4th Street, and that is a good thing in my estimation.
Yeah that's what I said. Theres a reason the Bengals don't use AJ Green out of the I formation. After a hit...sure. i guess we ahould cut Cobb took after his injury took him out of the playoff game last year.
Because he is more suited as an outside receiver.Yeah that's what I said. Theres a reason the Bengals don't use AJ Green out of the I formation.
