Only 5 teams have allowed more points than the Packers. Hard to believe that some people thought this defense was legit.
I agree letting Woodson go was a huge mistake. His play was slipping but he was still solid for the Raiders but his locker room value was grossly underestimated and sorely missed.Sabertooth said:Would you be in favor of releasing Gunter today? They could easily just pull somebody in off the street or a practice squad to replace his "performance". Just to show the team that there is some modicum of responsibility here. What's the worst that could happen?
He's such a disgrace to the 36 jersey. Heck get Leroy back there. He would be better than Gunter.
I said it before and I'll say it again....Charles Woodson could be signed today and he'd be the best defensive back on the team immediately. I'll never understand letting him go like they did.
Can anyone name a singel true "Leader" on this team. Peppers maybe. Can't think of another one.
Most the people Jordan ever played with thought he was a tool also. Grow up and act like a pro, who cares if your QB isn't your friend, it's not what he gets paid for. I don't think Rodgers is playing at the level we got used to, but he's still top 5 easily. when teams win QBS get too much credit but when they lose they take too much blame also. Rodgers wasn't out there giving up 400 Yards and 3 long scores.Sabertooth said:All that #### is just soap opera. I'm not really interested in that part of the game. Rodgers might be a tool. So what? Doesn't mean you should take this route off. Or miss that tackle. Or, oh I don't know, cover a guy from 10 feet away.
I hated the Datone pick as well. Reminded too much like Nick Perry, who's playing pretty good right now. I'd love to see the Pack get Dalvin Cook...this team could really use a weapon out of the backfield, amongst other things. Also if you can snag us a Reggie White clone, and maybe a Julio Jones, I'll be happy. Lol. I don't even give a #### what the position is. Heck if Aaron Rodgers 2.0 is there, pick him. But they really needs to quit whiffing on these early picks.
Realistically it looks like they probably end up 6-10 or 7-9. This will probably put them somewhere in the 10-18 range.
Looking back through the drafts and I hate the Datone pick even more. Leave aside the fact that DeAndre Hopkins was the next player selected. They also left Alec Ogletree on the board. Also Darius Slay and Travis Frederick went within the next 5 picks. Ouch. It's like a mini-Mandarich situation. Ted should be ashamed of that pick. Good lord.
You'd think so. They seem to be on the same page. I wonder if Mike is concerned yet. He apparently thinks they can win if they focus on fundamentals. Maybe having NFL quality talent would help too.One thing I'm not seeing is should McCarthy be getting a pass for this roster? I realize Ted's the GM but does he really go into the season with 2 HB's and a boatload of mediocre WR's without getting any input from MM? I would assume, and maybe incorrectly, that the head coach has major input on the makeup of the roster he must coach.
You're missing the point. At any point in a season the #4 and #5 guys could be forced to be the #1 and #2 guys (see: this season). That is how a draft and develop team needs to function. My point is they don't have the necessary physical skills to ever be those guys (see: this season). I'd rather have raw guys with physical skills like Shields was than Gunter who runs a 4.8 or Goodson who looks to have no understanding of football concepts and lacks the physicality.Psst...Hyde is a safety, Gunter and Goodson are #4 and #5 guys. Of course when they are out there as #1 guys they won't looks that good. You must have watched a different game with Spriggs...he looked much better at Guard than he did at tackle and a marked improvement over Barclay.
Well, part of it is they picked at the top half of the draft four straight years. 12, 5, 4, and 14. Your odds of an impact player go up pretty dramatically there vs. mid twenties. Mack and Cooper were two of those picks, both in the top 5.Watching Oakland and I am left wondering how they can build a team from scratch in 3 or 4 years while the Packers consistently slide backwards from super bowl champ to whatever it is on the field this year.
Oakland made great use of free agents to supplement their excellent drafts. Khalil Mack, Amari Cooper and David Carr are on their rookie deals still. That's huge. But the rest of their defense is constructed of free agents at Corner, safety, and line.
I would absolutely love this though I'm guessing 1 & 2 will be the likely scenario along with Capers hitting the road. Here's what I think needs to happen this offseason:
1. Thompson needs to "retire." He's had a nice run, but Murphy needs to move on. They have his replacement waiting in the wings (see #2). At this point Thompson has taken this team to a certain point and this season has especially showed the Achilles heel of building through the draft is lack of impactful depth; when your starters go down and you get to the 3, 4, 5 guy on the depth chart and they're year 0-1 guys who don't really have a clue. I see benefits of staying young and developing through the draft but the absolute refusal to add any impactful FA to push this team over the top is concerning.
2. Hire Eliot Wolf as GM. He would be an amazing change of pace. The bar will be set high given his father's legacy, but I think that's a good thing. I think it's time to move on from the draft and develop and go more with draft/develop with some supplementation of free agents. He has been groomed for this for the last several years, time to go for it.
3. Fire McCarthy. His schtick is just old at this point. His team lacks any identity. The team has just given up under him. As mentioned earlier in this thread, he is doing the same predictable stuff he has the last several years and never seems to change it. Some of it's not his fault (injuries), but a lot of it is.
4. Hire Josh McDaniels as HC. He had a rough run in his last head coaching job mostly, IMO, because of the Tebow disaster and feeling the pressure to play him. He obviously knows what he's doing and given the talent on the Packers I think he could really do well. A young GM with a young coach would provide a huge boost to this team that is just lacking any kind of identity.
Just my 0.02
Interesting on Capers Can you post a link? I do agree with the complexity. That's been brought up many times by the Packers beat writers. Hard for rookies to come in and learn it, which backfires when you keep pushing young players into key roles early.Sabertooth said:The two best players Ted Thompson has ever picked were in the bottom half of first round. There's plenty of talent in the late first. Ted just isn't identifying them and/or picking them. And he needs to be absolutely fantastic at the draft if he isn't going to fortify through free agency.
Also read a great post on Reddit this morning in regards to Capers D. Apparently Dom has never had a D in the top half of the league after he's been in a city for more than two seasons. Meaning he starts great, but teams figure him out and he's totally predictable at that point. Another point was that his defense is complex and this works against the Packers "we want to be the youngest team in the league" strategy for player acquisition. If you want to start youngsters, you have to keep it simple. They are trying to play chess with checker pieces.
Just a total mess. I hope they totally clean house from Ted right on down the line. Team is stale. Has been since the Seahawks debacle.
Honest question...if this team lost Aaron Rodgers for the season, could they win another game? Are they Cleveland + Rodgers? I tend to think so. Maybe they beat Chicago but that's it.
Agreed.I would absolutely love this though I'm guessing 1 & 2 will be the likely scenario along with Capers hitting the road.
I see that as a possibility as well, just because McCarthy's last year on his contract is next year. But, you have an MVP caliber QB (who hopefully hasn't lost it; is it the play calling and the poor play around him or is it him), so why waste another season with McCarthy if you know you are probably going to move in a different direction.Agreed.
I think Ted is gone and Capers is fired.. Wolf is hired. McCarthy is given the "vote of confidence and extension (just like Sherman)" Then he coaches next year and then is canned. At that point I think we see a true search for a coach. I have no preference on that. I basically see this as history repeating itself in terms of Mike Sherman. Sherman was stripped of the GM job and fired the next season from the coaching job if I recall. I want to say he was getting paid a ton of money by the Packers to coach TAMU.
It isn't going to be a mass firing. Packers are too classy for that. It should be though. Might as well give Aaron one more shot. It's harder to replace Rodgers than it is to replace anyone else in the organization.
I agree 100%. I just don't see it going down like that. I wish they'd just broom them all. They won't. Hell after 4 crappy seasons they still have Capers. He alone has probably cost them 2-3 playoff wins and a Super Bowl. But yet he remains.I see that as a possibility as well, just because McCarthy's last year on his contract is next year. But, you have an MVP caliber QB (who hopefully hasn't lost it; is it the play calling and the poor play around him or is it him), so why waste another season with McCarthy if you know you are probably going to move in a different direction.
If you clean the slate and start fresh with new coaching and GM, you can have this team looking at a superbowl in 1-2 seasons. Honestly. I would see next year as a down year given a new coach and a new scheme, but these guys are professionals, it's what they do. You hire a new coach in January and you're looking at 8 months of learning new playbooks etc. That's not impossible. Heck, what else are they doing for those 8 months besides working out?
Why waste another one of Rodgers' prime years (yes, debateable if he's past), when you still have a chance at a "dynasty" of some kind with Rodgers in his early to mid 30s? Brady's still doing it at 39(!!!!!). There's no reason this franchise can't have 5 continuous years of success and growth... well, maybe two reasons and those are the two changes I would make as I've posted above.
I either want 10-6 or 4-12. Nothing in between.Wow. This thread really died. I guess we just play out the string at this point. Are we hoping for losses yet?
Houston is about middle of the road. Rushing D is not as good as their passing D.i dont know, 4 of next 5 are against teams with pretty stiff Defenses.
Last year they were decimated by injuries at WR. So they went in with more WRs than they needed and not enough HBs. Now watch next year as we keep 4 HBs and go with less of something else and get bit in the ### there. One thing I'm not seeing is should McCarthy be getting a pass for this roster? I realize Ted's the GM but does he really go into the season with 2 HB's and a boatload of mediocre WR's without getting any input from MM? I would assume, and maybe incorrectly, that the head coach has major input on the makeup of the roster he must coach.
Doubtful...his job is more the off the field stuff. And like Harlan before him, he has done well keeping them relevant in terms of revenue.Three sub par seasons in a row, and Murphy is going to be looking for a job as well.
As bad as the D has been, the offense going three and out so often and so early has not helped.I'll be watching with interest tonight. I'm not optimistic, especially with all of the injuries and O line shuffling. Biggest thing is the O needs to start better than last week.
Win or lose, I'm curious how the desire will be. Will we see this team fight? Or, has McCarthy lost them?
McCarthys best game of the year?Offense looking good early...maybe they haven't packed it in yet.
yesMcCarthys best game of the year?
Ball control offense, keep the D off the field.
Adams looks so much better this year over last year.
Wasn't Randall back or no? I heard he might be back. didn't watch the whole game and when I did, thankfully, GB had the ball most of the time.I thought the DBs and the defense in general looked much better tonight than they have the past couple of games. What or who was the difference tonight? Did they get somebody back from injury that was a difference maker?
