2016 New York Jets: Kotite-like (1 Viewer)

It seems like yesterday that the Jets were saying the Patriots would be looking up at them once Brady got off suspension and this was the year that NE was ripe for the picking. Not looking to mix it up with Jets fans, but they went off the tracks pretty quickly this year
FAKE NEWS!!!!!

lol... Really doubt anyone here.... Even the Craziest Jet Fitz "win Now" "Window" ppl said that....

I googled it and found some "AFC east could be open to Bills, FIns, Jets" type stuff by some whackos

I don't remember who said it or the context, but it was bulletin board material and in the news around Boston a few months ago.

Again, not looking to start a holy war on this, but things went south this year regardless.

From my estimation..... the amount of Jet fans who predicted things going South was 1000/1 over those who thought NE was "Ripe for the picking"

Personally I Overpaid and Drafted Brady in most of my leagues knowing he'd come back rested and pissed off...

Yeah none of those articles (that actually quote any "jets") come close to saying "the Patriots would be looking up at them once Brady got off suspension" - all they say is that it presents an opportunity - which should be obvious even to dullards or Patriot fans.

You're thinking of Jets beat writer Manish Mehta who is hated by Jets fans more than anyone else.

I don't really care all that much or follow the click bait headlines, whether it be beat writers with an axe to grind or players making some odd quote. Only the games matter, not the locker room talk. Bottom line, the Jets contingent (whomever that may be) had higher hopes this year than where they are at, especially given their record from last year.

Thanks for pointing that out. Obviously you weren't "looking to mix it up with Jets fans" by posting in the Jets team thread how poorly the season turned out despite the team having hope during the preseason. You were likely just trying to present info that those that frequent this thread weren't aware of.

I predicted a 7-9 season.  I guess those "higher hopes than where they are at" makes me a looser Jets fan.  Thanks for pointing that out.  It's much appreciated.

You know what they used to say about Pats fans around here ;)

Thanks, anarchy99, for pointing out what nobody in here even remotely said, nor was it in the papers, nor was it...

anywhere.

And yet you don't want to stir the pot.

Sure.

eta* Maybe Seattle can give you a non-cheating Super Bowl win this year, too.

Jesus - I wrote this almost 2 years ago...... lol... 2 Wasted years - And THIS is also why you play your young QB's over terrible journeymen Or at least be good enough at watching tape to see the difference between a good QB and an outlier, miracle year and plan accordingly....

So......  The New York Jets start All over.... Just like Macc should have done on Day 1, it's time to rip it down and analyze young talent..

So Sad.... But, Hey, beating crap teams last year was a load of fun... Almost making the playoffs was pretty cool too.... "Win Now - Window"...lol

The part that angers me most is "Part of Maccagnan’s reasoning for not just doing a complete rebuild was his belief New York fans would not accept that."

Where did this thing every come from where NY fans can't grasp a rebuild....... as if decades of dancing around it is better????  Stupidest thing ever to believe or say and to actually operate like that, if that's from the Owner - OH GOD!!!!!

http://nypost.com/2016/12/07/mike-maccagnans-jets-plan-has-been-flawed-from-day-1/

Mike Maccagnan’s Jets plan has been flawed from Day 1

The Jets 2017 preseason gets underway Sunday in San Francisco.

That is the message coach Todd Bowles delivered by handing the keys to Bryce Petty. After a month of talking about how Ryan Fitzpatrick gives the team the best chance to win, he now is prioritizing evaluation over execution.

It is the right move and begins a critical period for the Jets. This is going to be a team in serious transition this offseason and there is no doubt the No. 1 priority as usual will be figuring out the quarterback position. But there are plenty of other questions to answer this offseason other than quarterback for Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan as they enter Year 3 on the job.

Though it is premature to fire Bowles or general manager Maccagnan, there are legitimate questions about both of them.

The biggest is: What direction is this thing going in? The Jets still have no quarterback, no pass rusher, a bad secondary and an offensive line in desperate need of a rebuild. The team has looked uninterested and undisciplined at times this year.

It feels like Year 3 of Bowles/Maccagnan will be more of a rebuilding year than Years 1 or 2 as they try to rid their roster of overpriced players and bad guys.Maccagnan’s plan when he got the job in 2015 was to try to remain competitive while rebuilding through the draft. Two years with no playoff appearances, that plan looks flawed.Part of Maccagnan’s reasoning for not just doing a complete rebuild was his belief New York fans would not accept that. All he has to do is look at what Mets fans put up with in the first years of Sandy Alderson to know he is wrong.

If Maccagnan had come in and been honest — this was going to take a few years — fans would have been patient. Instead, he spent a ton of Woody Johnson’s money (in his defense, he did have to hit the salary-cap floor, but he could have spent wiser) and put together a roster that was good enough to go 10-6 in 2015.

That might have been the worst thing to happen to the 2016 Jets. The success of 2015 turned out to be a mirage thanks to a career-year from Ryan Fitzpatrick, amazing team health and a soft schedule. That record raised expectations for this season and basically forced Maccagnan to bring back Fitzpatrick, even though it was clear from the prolonged negotiations there was skepticism inside the organization about him duplicating his 2015 performance.

Instead, they got teased last year by nearly making the playoffs and this season 3-9 feels like a complete regression when it actually is probably just a market correction based on Fitzpatrick’s return to earth, more injuries (notably Eric Decker) and a tougher schedule.I don’t think Jets fans would have demanded a winner in 2015. They would have understood if they had to endure a 3-13 season in Year 1 as long as progress was made this season and the plan was evident, as it was with the Mets and their young pitching.

Now, Maccagnan has to hope his draft picks are as good as he thinks they are. Leonard Williams is the only clear-cut home run he has in these first two draft classes. The jury is out on the rest. Darron Lee and Jordan Jenkins have shown promise, but it is too soon to tell what they will be. He has drafted two quarterbacks, and both are a mystery. We’ll have a better idea about whether Petty can play in a month. The bubble wrap remains on Christian Hackenberg, who may ultimately hold Maccagnan’s fate in his right arm.

It is going to be tough to fill too many holes in free agency this winter. The Jets are projected to be over the cap, but will make space by cutting some players. The problem is those cuts will create more holes. Maccagnan can get rid of Revis, tackle Ryan Clady and center Nick Mangold and get nearly $30 million in cap space, but then they would have holes at cornerback, left tackle and center.

The argument to keep Maccagnan and Bowles beyond this year is they deserve more time to turn this team around after years of bad drafting. This is fair. But how long will Johnson give them? The Jets have now missed the playoffs for six straight years. The fans are restless.

I don’t think Johnson is ready to blow this thing up, but the fuse is definitely lit and the clock is ticking on Bowles and Maccagnan.

Jets beat up and traveling cross country to face the awful 49ers....what an awful game....hope they lose to help draft position but want to see the kid do well....hoping for a 42-41 loss!  lol

I would like to see Ryan Fitzpatrick wear street clothes the rest of the season. If Petty were to get injured and Hackenberg cannot play (due to mechanical concerns), Nick Marshall could play quarterback. Marshall wouldn't do much worse than Fitzpatrick.

This is an awful franchise for a reason....I expect the fans will be hear the last 2 home games......

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Jets aren't expected to fire Todd Bowles.
This falls in line with a report that owner Woody Johnson "remains behind" Bowles. The Jets aren't planning on making any changes to their current power structure. Bowles has two years left on his deal and should return for a third season.

Enunwa made a catch that was so good, the officials decided to review it because "There is no way he could have possibly caught that."

Yeah, I think it's a myth that New York fans will not accept a rebuild. Sure the stadium will be less filled, but that happens everywhere during down years. New York fans are smart enough to realize that sometimes you have to take a step back to move forward. People could get excited to see some young talent and watch it grow - sell them on that. Honestly I think they should boot Bowles, and bring in a young offensive minded coach to grow with them, but if Bowles sticks around sobeit. He's just going to be fired after next year anyway.

I still can't blame them for bringing back Fitz - I know last season was partially a mirage for him, but let's not act like he was terrible (or that journeyman can't evolve into more in their later years) - the team was coming off a 10-6 season, and there weren't any better options. Not to rehash the Geno Smith debate again, but the brain-trust, at least, obviously didn't see a future with him. I'm glad they limited the major impact of the signing to 2016 at least and didn't totally cave. Watching Geno Smith go 6-10 wouldn't have moved the franchise forward either.

Personally I hope they do this the right way. They need to tear it down, take their 2-14 lumps, and build it back up through strong drafting and smart signings. Grab some o-linemen next season (assuming there's no real QB worth taking) in the draft and get some secondary help and let Powell and Khiry Robinson run the ball while Petty or Hack grow. Even if their are cap hits dump Revis, Forte, Marshall and some other guys that will just halt the growth of the young players. I actually think a wide receiver corp of Decker (for vet leadership), Enunwa, J. Marshall, Peak and Anderson could grow into something.

Please do not sign/trade for Romo or Cutler and hope to pull of some more magic.

Well, I don't think Petty is going to be a franchise level QB or likely not even an above average starter, but he played reasonably well and at least he's a decent stop-gap and backup option for the future.

Good stuff Doc....I was torn by the win but PEtty looked decent and they only dropped a spot or 2 so no harm in winning that one....but I hope realizes it took OT to beat an awful SF team...only Bowles positive is that there seemed to be a halftime adjustment made and the players didnt quit like last week.  I think Woody will keep Bowles which I completely disagree with but it is what it is....he also said Mangini was safe so the last 3 games will matter....if he stays odds are he'll be fired at the end of next yr so it wastes a yr of coaching which I hate.

Unfortunately I think they win 2 of the last 3.....they always play Miami and Buffalo hard and the Fish have a backup QB and Bills may be quitting worse than Jets on last game....I think they'll also play the Pats hard but come up short...so looking at a possible 6-10 year.  Probably a pick in the 10-12 range which would be a bummer but I've come to grips with it....at least there isnt a no brainer franchise QB like the Mariotta draft.....

Completely agree with the rebuild...Jets went on a nice run after spending 2 high picks on the OL (Brick and Mangold) - they should go that route again.  Skill positions are tolerable at this point although if a true game breaking talent drops to them I'd love the grab one - but OL, secondary and pass rusher should be the main focus.  I'd also roll the dice with Petty/Hack next season - maybe add a young vet with upside like Glennon....under no circumstances should they bring in a Romo, Kap or other high priced or older QB....see if the kids develop, if not it will be a reload yr with  bad record to hopefully draft the franchise QB but this time have a nice team around him to build.

The focus should be on the post-Brady run..he's got only a few yrs left then the AFC East becomes wide open.....you can rebuild in NY if it's done right....it's time.

Was cautiously optimistic with petty, showed guts and a big arm, made a lot of rookie mistakes, but man it's been such a horrible season it's nice to have a sliver of something to watch.

He didnt look overwhelmed and showed some heart running in that conversion...definitely has a gun but has to learn how to read defenses better and touch passes.....let's not forget SF D is putrid...the real test starts next 3 games....it's unrealistic to have him light it up but I just hope he shows enough progress to keep on track.  Going up against a Belichick and Rex Def is a great test....I'd love to see Hack get the reps at least as the #2 as well.....can't keep the dirty secret chained to a clip board through an entire lost season.

 - maybe add a young vet with upside like Glennon
He's actually a guy that intrigues me. I like what I saw from him as a rookie. Obviously he would need to come at a reasonable price, but I'd love to bring him in and have a true competition with him, Petty and Hack during camp.

and I really hope they give Powell one full season, at least, as the feature back. The guy has improved each season and has always shown well when given carries. Let him, Robinson and perhaps a late round rookie carry the load next season.

would love this - but I have heard a lot of teams are high on him....worried that the hype may make him too expensive nor would he want to compete.

I am not 100% certain but I do not think anybody who posted in this thread has anything to do with the Jets having won on Sunday, so I am really not sure who you are thanking.

I doubt that anybody working for the Jets actually reads this thread.

Yeah, I don't understand the "NY won't accept a rebuild" theory at all. The Jets haven't won anything in decades, so they really don't have throngs of casual fans that are all of a sudden going to bail when things get REALLY bad. Most Jets fans I know are pretty knowledgeable and very realistic (often leaning negative if anything) about the short and long term state of the team.  The fan base knows that doing something stupid like bringing in Romo isn't going to suddenly make the team a contender.

Last year's Fitzpatrick performance was indeed a mirage. And then they lost some pretty good players off last year's team (Brick, Snacks, Ivory). But based on what was coming back and some expected improvements from a few younger guys, it was reasonable to think that they could compete for a WC again if Fitz was even 80% of what he was the year before. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. Some guys got hurt, others played like crap and they had a much tougher schedule.

But yeah, its time to blow it up. At this point, the only guys that are un-tradeable/un-cutable are....

Leonard Williams (real solid 2nd year)

Wilkerson (only because they've invested too much and I have to believe his poor year is at least partially injury related)

Enunwa (big jump from year 1. Excited to see where it goes)

Powell (deserves an opportunity to be the # 1 guy unless someone like Fournette makes sense at whatever spot they pick)

Darron Lee (he's shown something)

Petty/Hack (don't know what we have yet)

Carpenter and Winters (both have been solid this year and you can't rebuild the whole line overnight)

Jordan Jenkins (too early to make a judgement)

Pryor (was decent last year. Have to give him another shot)

The rookie WR's and DB's (again, its just too early to judge)

Everyone else anyone wants can be traded. Revis can be cut.

Well that was awful....another nationally broadcasted horror show....stadium had more Fin fans than Jets fans....I was resigned to Bowles coming back but these kinds of performances may get him the boot after all....we can dream!

Sean Payton rumored to be available via trade....would LOVE him for the Jets...offensive established coach....I'd deal a 2d rd pick to lock him in...Jets never do well with those 2d rd picks anyway so might as well get a good coach for it!

I'm all for it.  I don't buy people making this argument that the Jets cannot fire Bowles because then you risk "becoming the Cleveland Browns."  Bull****.  We just got done keeping a guy around for too long in Rex.  Prior to that, you had Herm and Mangini with decent 4+ year runs at a clip, which I would imagine is around the normal life cycle of an unsuccessful NFL coach.

I have no problem with being proactive in this instance and getting rid of Bowles a year too early rather than hoping he just gets it.  Much like players, coaches have to PROGRESS in their careers - get better as they gain more experience.  This is obviously even more important with our ever present D-coordinator-turned-first-time-HC that we always seem to have.  If coaches are making the same mistakes in year 4 that they did in year 1, they aren't getting better at their jobs.  Just as Rex never progressed as a head coach - continued making the same bone headed clock management mistakes all throughout his tenure, maybe even moreso towards the end - Bowles seems to be traveling down that path.  Couple that with his seeming lack of control over the players, the perceived lack of effort for him in the field, and perhaps most damning, his completely gooberish Idzik-like personality and inability to ever admit to a mistake make him an easy fire IMO.  Guy sounds like a ####### cross between Cleveland from Family Guy and Jerome Boger.

This team needs (among many, many, many, many, many other things) an actual, real, in the flesh NFL head coach.  I second the trade for Sean Payton.

^ Yes to that. Also, if the franchise was smart they would try to get Gus Bradley as defensive coordinator as soon as possible.

I'd change Complete Organizations with the Browns today.....

Young Talent, No cap issues, Lotta Draft Picks... Do the Jets have a better roster??  I say No.

Exactly where this jets team should have been today after 2 years of Macc Rebuild instead of the magical garbage they bought into.

IMO It's the Jets, San Fran and Chicago in the discussion as worst 3 Situations in the NFL today.

It's pretty bad.....besides Leonard Williams there is not 1 player that I find indispensable......they could cut the entire team except Leo and I'd be ok with it....that's scary.

The one constant is Woody....how he allows this to happen is ridiculous....there are no shortcuts or competitive rebuilds....strip it down and do it the right way!  This includes risking embarrassment to play your 2d rd pick in a meaningless game at the end of the season vs the Bills....I know exposing Hack to the media and fans petrifies everyone there but there is no excuse not to play him.....quite frankly if they wont play him in a meaningless game then fans are justified to call him a bust.

And in typical Jest fashion, we won't even have the according draft pick to show for it.  We're bad enough (long term situation-wise) to justify having/needing top 5 picks, but we will win out and pick 12th or something.  Oh well, just gonna draft a D lineman to replace Sheldon or a DB to replace Revis anyway.

It is annoying that the Jets are awful but find a way to finish outside the top 5......and in every draft they are in a position to draft a franchise QB there is never one available.....read some good things about Shell...if he can look good the last 2 games at least one side of the OL would be decent....need to draft a LT and C of the future ala the Brick/Mangold draft.  Make whatever QB is back there's life easier...build a great OL...decent running game and WRs are in place.

Seeing as they're 16 point underdogs at NE that doesn't seem likely.

Turning the Page on Disagreeing with Almost All of what this GM has done since arriving....

I keep seeing these Vet QB's being linked to the Jets..... @#$!@$#*#!!!!!

I wish the Owner would just say "ya know what, you picked 2 QB's since you've been here - You play them next year, we're not buying a few extra wins for 12-16 Mill it might take to get a Romo or Cutler"

I'm open to drafting another QB in this draft but, the way they handled the past 2 years I doubt he'd be in the mix anyway.

Hackenberg and Petty - those are your QB's for 2017 - Either they flash and develop or we position for a top Pick again. (Same as my Geno Plan)

Cut most of the Old dead weight - Slashing and burning these players that tricked you into thinking there was some sort of Window to Win now.

Really 1 Player on the entire team team that needs to stay (as stated above)

Merry Christmas

MERRY FITZMAS Jets fans....

My impromptu poll from this time last year till start of season tells me Majority of Jets fans got what they asked for.....

Starting Fitz in the last meaningless game is akin to kicking a FG down 41-0 - stupid.

This is a final kick to the nuts of every Jet fan....If they cant start Hack in a completely meaningless game vs a team that just fired their coach I have no choice but to believe Hack is another colossal bust and Mac should go too....

I would say clean house but Woody is such a dumb wuss I dont think he'll do a thing.....what a disaster.

So now buff cleans house and benches the qb before the final game, looks like jets will back into a win and slip down the draft in a meaningless game.. Typical

So word is out that Bowles is safe....shocker.....clueless organization that wonders why its a laughing stock
