2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

As a matter of protocol doesn't Davis need approval from the league (just as a formality)?

Ya know, like that dog an donkey show Kroenke put on...

Giddy-up

The only thing this team is missing is a state-of-the-art stadium and an owner with deep pockets. This deal could facilitate both.

Yes, in January the league will come together and vote on if the Raiders can move to LV or not. They need 24 of the 32 owners to vote yes for the move. I believe that Jones, Kraft, Kroenke, and McNair are all in favor of them moving there. Obviously Kroenke doesn't wan't Raiders in LA and Jones and McNair don't want the Raiders in Texas (San Antonio).

I believe that ultimately the league could not stop the team from moving (didn't Irsay just roll up the moving vans in '84?) but yes it would be much better if they did it on the up-and-up.

Going back even further when Al moved to LA he sued for the right to move and won IIRC. So the other owners' approval is a formality, but playing by the "game" Davis may get more league money.

Yeah, I'd love for this to not be a "renegade" kind of move and have it all done on the up and up. Feels nice to finally be a modern organization when it comes to football operations, player evaluatoin, free agency, drafting, etc. it would be nice to get away from the Raiders always looking to throw the middle finger at the league.

Carr's worst game of the season. He seems to be getting more erratic as the season unfolds. And very poor decisions today.

Both KC CBs missed big parts of this game in 2nd half and we barley went after the replacements.

Put this one down to coaching. Big division game and we come out flat on D again and Carr making poor decisions.

At least Sooper Cooper went to work on his feet and it has paid off

I think we all knew that the Raiders were not yet in the top tier of the NFL. The O has to win the games. The D is awful. Still think it is coaching and not talent at this point.

The defensive scheme leaves a lot to be desired.  No creativity.  If you are a running team just line up and run the ball down their throat, if you're a passing team drop back and let it fly.  And if you can't get to the QB with four then please bring more people.

Is Norton going to be on the hot seat again? The guy has such a great pedigree as a player (3 rings) and a coach (one ring), proven LB coach at college and NFL level, but may simply not have the chops yet to full out coordinate effectively.

Maybe JDR has a bit of the rose-tinted glasses for Norton given that they went to war together for a few years as LBs on Dallas -- but may be time to put personal relations aside and get someone who can shape this raw talented D into something effective on the field, with more creativity and schemes to leverage the best out of his players.

Or maybe JDR doesn't want to expose the secondary with blitzing. We dont know. But at least others are now posting what I have been advocating for several weeks: more ceativity to the defensive schemes.

To the defense's credit they did have a goalline stand and several key stops in the second half. Unfortunately Carr left his game at home today.

That was ugly.  In all facets of the game, both sides of the ball... coaching, performance, field conditions, etc.  You name it it wasn't good.  Early reports from JDR gives me some hope that it will be used as a point of reflection and not turn into a blame game of any sort.

Next up two east coast games where the Raiders will stay out east, followed by a Thursday night division game.

Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug.  And we all knew that if Carr isn't carrying us we aren't winning a game.  We're still 4-2 with some strong wins though.

Really, really rough road schedule to open the season btw.  Five of eight on the road and all eastern time zone.

The second half looks better from that perspective but three of the last four are roadies.  Although SD is typically a neutral site game for Oakland and depending on how the stadium vote goes in November (and if the Chargers are tanking) it could be a true home game for Oakland.

Mark Davis said if the Raiders move is approved,"We would continue to play in Oakland while we're building a Stadium in Las Vegas."

Mark Davis says if everything works out, a 2020 season in Las Vegas sounds reasonable.

that game was horrible to watch.  so predictable on both sides of the ball  the coaching was awful imho.  the offense was so predictable!  i would say my  buddy and i guessed the play calls at about a 65% rate, from my living room.  the d was awful.  i really hope this is an outlier and not a regression to past.

Talked to Mark Davis, who made clear: He's not going to talk with Oakland. Made a commitment to Nevada gov. Full speed Vegas for #Raiders.

If I were a betting man (which I occasionally am...) I would invest in the Raiders +1.  Coming off a brutal loss to the division rival Chiefs and getting a point against the Jags is either a serious gift or a serious trap. Jacksonville has struggled against far less talented teams than this Raiders squad, and that Chiefs game brought a lot of "coachable moments" for Del Rio.

This has the look of a "come to jesus" game for the Raiders - IMO they're going to win by 2 scores. I was pretty surprised to see them getting a point.

Anybody else disappointed that Karl Joseph has not made more of an impact?
Early stages of his rookie year.  The defense in itself is having some scheme issues.

I think he has made some goods plays and adjustments; given the scenario, I'd give it time for the more spectacular plays to come about.

Trips east for 1:00 kickoffs are brutal, and the Raiders have a terrible history in them.  A coinflip sounds about right on the line.

I think it'll do them good to get on the road - stop listening to the local headlines about how great they are. Start listening to their coaches about how hungry they need to be.

They're either going to win this game 31-13 or they're going to get blown out. I don't see anything in between.

and Reggie Nelson not making more of an impact this year.
In IDP Nelson has been excellent for tackles and just got his 1st Int. Been a rock solid DB.  Surprised to hear criticism of his on-field play - I haven't been able to watch every game, but in the games I saw he didn't seem to be a huge problem, (though he did miss a big tackle against the Chiefs on a key 3rd down play)....has he really been that bad? I thought he was a great pick-up for the Raiders in the offseason.

I bet Nelson has been excellent fantasy-wise. I don't play anymore (burnout) so I wouldn't know. But in my opinion he's making too many tackles. Most of his tackles are being made 10 yards past the LOS. The front 7 should be making most of those plays before he gets there, but they're not. Reggie's tackles are a reflection of the their poor performance and lack of communication.

That doesn't sound like Reggie Nelson is the problem then?  I mean - he is doing his job cleaning up someone else's mess, but it's the defensive line that's allowing runners to bust through and it's also the D-Line not putting enough pressure on the QB so those intermediate passes are successful, no?

Agreed. That's the point I was trying to make. You said it better than I could.

No -- love the fire and the nose for the ball I see from him in every game he's played.

Way more disappointed in Sean Smith and Reggie Nelson not making more of an impact this year.
Taller/larger corners do not age well and they drop off very quickly.

Someone can fact check me, but I think Sean Smith is very close to the same age as Nnamdi Asomugha was when he went over to the Eagles and really started to struggle.  I wouldn't be shocked to see a similar transformation from Richard Sherman in a year or two.

You are correct. So far there have been two long pass plays over the middle (I think one in the Saints game and one in the Falcons game) where I immediately thought Woodson would have intercepted that ball.

After talking to a friend who's a jags homer, he thought this was a total trap game. Del Rio homecoming, long flight for an early game...

i dunno...I'd think Jack would wanna stick it to his old team.

i like the raiders in this game - to say it's winnable would be an understatement. Jags are improved but IMO this raiders team is much better.

The thing about the next two weeks that sticks out to me, besides two winnable games, is the TB game they will be essentially doing the WC trip back to TB.

dunno if it was said here but it sounds like the raiders will be in camp like conditions between games. Lock themselves away from distractions and work on the weak part of their game

I'm loading up on that +1.

Jalen Ramsey will get beat deep to blow it open.

I'm betting there was some colorful language in the locker room after that loss to the Chiefs.

If there's any such thing as a "good loss", that game might be it. Could light a fire under that defense. They've played way below their ability.

Shiuld be a good game regardless.

God the raiders got a messed up schedule.

Its hard to think it's by accident. I'm no conspiracy guy, but seems like every year they get the worst travel schedule.

At the very least we got thrown a bone with our request for and getting these roadtrips back to back and close to each other. Do they still count the not existent return trips, while we stay on the EC, in travel miles?

We also lose another home game, how a WC team gets a 'home game' in London is incocievable unless its LA, when we play in Mexico City. Against any other team it might make sense but against the Texans??

Fantasy points doesn't always indicate sound, consistent on-the-field play. And that's the problem with Nelson this year.

Signed as a high ticket free agent, he has been a see-saw this year, alternating solid games (tackles, creating turnovers) with games where he's muffed coverage, missed tackles, and not played up to his potential -- or to me, expectations.

While many of the defensive woes lie with the guys in the trenches (not being able to bottle up runs up the middle or vanilla scheming that doesn't allow our best players to get to the QB quickly and violently) it's the huge variance in consistency of play that is disappointing in Nelson who, along with Smith, was brought on to being an element of stability and higher level of play to our defensive backfield.

Joseph, on the other hand, looks to me like he is playing his heart out on every down, has a nose like a target-locked missile in that he is around the play more often than not, and shows tons of hustle, grit, and aggression. I never expected the rookie to be a Pro Bowler out the gate, but there is no question to me he;s been way more consistent than his FA acquisition peers.
