**2017 Preseason Observations Thread** (1 Viewer)

I think Ertz could put Gronk in a dark shadow this year. I know it won't actually play out that way but he looks like he could be targeted 10+ times every game in this offense and he's good enough to get the TDs.

That being said, I know how it goes.  When it comes to the RZ, they will want to get Alshon involved and Blount will probably somehow score 10 TD in November and December but Ertz really could be a mismatch nightmare.

I agree Ertz is a very good TE play this year. I don't think he is capable of Gronk type numbers though.

Wentz generally good: showed off his athleticism, field-awareness, and intelligence. Accuracy....a bit less impressive as several times his WRs had to leave their feet instead of making catches in stride. Still...a good showing....he's being under-rated in fantasy as this team will throw a lot.

Ajayi is a beast, barring injury will make his owners very happy. Parker looked good too and obviously has the trust of his QB. Cutler is an upgrade in that offense, and I actually like Tannehill. Philly backfield is a crapshoot, plenty of depth but nobody truly standing out. Smallwood appears the best bet right now, but it looks likely to go hot-hand week to week. No star there but Eagles are going to have trouble hiding any of them on the practice squad too. Maybe Pumphrey gets some phantom injury to land on IR? Eagles suddenly deep at WR, even after moving Mathews. I had thought Agholar would step up, but Smith still has it, and the other young WRs make nice depth. Agholar just won't have the targets unless someone gets hurt...too many quality mouths to feed.

Brandon Allen comes in - lights it up - surprise starting QB for Jaguars week 1
They've honestly got nothing to lose. Henne isn't the answer. If Henne was a starting QB in the league, wouldn't we know it by now?

There's 18MM reasons Bortles isn't the guy.

Why not let Allen go chuck it around the yard?

Tough to say that when you have one of the most talented rosters in the league.

Keelan Cole, UDFA from Kentucky Wesleyan, started and played almost the entire time with the Jags starters. Played ahead of Hurns and Westbrook.

I know nothing about this guy, though Hurns early in camp compared Cole to Victor Cruz.

Except at the most important position. Henne didn't move them at all against the Panthers defense. Bortles is atrocious and gets his option guaranteed if he gets injured.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I should add Henne has made some nice throws down the field. One dropped by Cole that would've been 40 or so yards. Then a 34-yarder to Robinson.

Oh yeah I agree. I'm just speaking from the perspective of the Jags coaches/players/management/owners. There is a lot for them to lose. They haven't been well run though. High pick on a RB, $40 million for a 4th string WR and they picked up the 5th year option on the 1 player that is holding them back.

Wish Jacksonville would just get Kaep in there already. Even if he only throws 15 times a game, his ability to run would make the rin game with Fournette so much more effective. Plus, his passes can't be any more errant that Bortles'. At least he has the decision making to lead a good team.

Between the crappy qb play and his foot I probably wouldnt target LF at all this season.  The Jags look to be bad again this year

Seriously, they would probably be better off with Kap/Tebow type and just play a college offense with lots of read options, lots of runs, multiple backs and then a few times a game go deep on play action. With their potentially very good defense, they probably win more games than with the current approach. Hell Tebow won a road playoff game with that offense.

Westbrook is injured.

Westbrook is injured.

I see that now - said he was sore in pre-game so they held him out.

This situation is interesting though.  It's a plausible argument that the receiver opposite A-Rob for this team is going to have a lot of opportunity to make things happen.  If you're a DC facing Jacksonville right now, you bracket A-Rob, shove everyone else toward the LOS, and play man on the outside until they prove they have another WR that can make you pay for that.  Whether that's Westbrook or Keelan Cole, someone's going to get a solid chance.  It could still be Hurns too, but Cole played ahead of Hurns last night in what's supposed to be the dress rehearsal game.

ETA - apparently Cole played with the starters in the 2nd preseason game too, where Hurns didn't play a single snap (though Hurns was fully dressed).  Hurns played last night, but only in 3-wide sets (at least from my casual watching of the game).

Picked Keelan Cole up last week. Word out of Jacksonville is they love the kid and he's been playing out of his mind in camp.......

Jarrad Davis got abused on that drive. Welcome to the league rookie. The Lions desperately need him to help in coverage.

Gillislee got the short yardage TD and 2 point conversion. Lewis started and there has been plenty James White.

What's up with Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell?

Haven't heard a peep this off-season.

Edit: So Hogan is ripping it up after Edelman left?
