2017 Summer Football Tournament- Tournament cancelled, everyone go home (1 Viewer)

I was under the impression a lot of that German B team has been playing in euro qualifying. No?
No, not really.

Twenty different players saw playing time in the Confed Cup:
Four player saw no playing time in the qualifying matches. (Demirbay, Ginter, Rüdiger, Süle)
Three were subbed in once in qualifying.  Two of those were against lowly San Marino. (Plattenhardt, Rudy, Werner)
Nine saw starts against San Marino.
-Goretzka (subbed in another time against San Marino)
-Mustafi (subbed in one other time)
-Brandt (subbed in two other times)
-Can, Henrichs, Stindl, Wagner, Younes
-Ter Stegen got both starts against San Marino, once after Neuer was injured.
Leno got the start against Azerbaijan after Neuer was injured.

Hector and Kimmich both started all six qualifying matches so far and Draxler started in five.

So, six qualifying matches ... 66 possible starts and 18 possible subs.
The Confed squad had 28 starts (11 if you exclude Hector, Kimmich and Draxler), and 7 subs.  Nearly all against San Marino in June.

Mama Mia!  Povera San Marino.

So the UEFA U-19 championship kicked off yesterday. How strongly does the rest of Europe pull against Germany in this one?

My German friends all discount Juergen's involvement in the "Extended Talent Promotion Program", in hindsight of course, but he was definitely part of it.

Great article by Uli Hesse for those who are interested: https://www.theblizzard.co.uk/article/learning-press
Good piece, some nice nuggets of historical info that we newer fans wouldn't know. The author kinda glossed over the fact that Germany is the second most populous European nation  (or third, can't remember exactly) but it was interesting to learn how the national association racheted up the pressure on the clubs 15 years ago to improve the national team. Still, though, Bundesliga remains about 50-50 German vs non (Switzerland was the biggest outside contributor of talent last season). I wonder if any other national association in the world wields the power in its home country that the German Federation does?

Also, Cletius, thanks for the GoT map in the other thread.

I expect that Neuer, Kroos, Hummels, and Ozil, at the very least will be 2018 starters. Reus too if healthy.  Mueller will have to work hard to lose his spot.  Of this group, only Kimmich seems a sure fire starter to me. Maybe Draxler.
If Werner keeps up his pace, it will be hard to overlook him as 1st choice in a year.

Striker is the biggest question mark for Germany, IMO.  Werner had a great year for RBL, but had stagnated with Stuttgart for two years before.  It's hard to know what Jogi is thinking at striker.  The Confed Cup is such a small sample size.  Of course, for all we know, Klose comes out of retirement to bang in a few 3 footers for Germany in 2018.

I loved seeing Klose on the field in russia after the game yesterday.

Nicaragua scores their first ever gold cup goal to go up 1-0 against Panama. :excited:

Panama equalized 60sec later

Guiana forfeits Hon match 3-0, Malouda banished.
Punishment for Guiana is fine, but the reward for Honduras is crazy. 3 points and 3 goals (which, btw, as the goals they have now) could easily impact the 3rd place qualifiers.

CONCACAF screwed this one up.

I had forgotten the 3rd place implications.  I had figured with Honduras playing Canada that it wouldn't really matter.  Still won't if Honduras wins (and they have a habit of curb stomping Canada).

So how much did H pay G to pull this off?

I didn't follow. What did they screw up?  Isn't a 3-0 result the norm for a forfeited soccer game?

They had plenty of time after the lineup was announced with an ineligible player to take some action. They essentially rewarded Honduras for their ineptitude.

God bless Concacaf

So Florent Malouda has a stadium ban. He just arrived at the stadium. #GoldCup2017

He's won Ligue 1, EPL, several domestic cups, Champions League and played in a World Cup final.*  Who can blame him for wanting desperately to add this last crown jewel to his collection?

* trivia time. It was Malouda who won the penalty in which Zidane Paneka'd Buffon 10 minutes in. Who fouled Malouda? Materazzi of course, setting up the bizarrely fantastic ending.
