2017 Summer Football Tournament- Tournament cancelled, everyone go home (1 Viewer)

Ok.  This is my first big tournament since I made the jump to full-fledged soccer fan.  I was pretty excited for the Euros and the Copa America, but overall I've been quite underwhelmed.

I can't decide why.

First of all, the team's seem to be disjointed and many don't play with any identity, and those that do are just great defensive teams (Italy)

Second, I don't seem to have a rooting interest.  I suppose this may be the bigger issue.  I usually find a team to pull for in each game, but it honestly doesn't matter to me who wins.

Third, it's not Liverpool.  For some reason in my journey to soccer fandom, I've latched quite strongly onto my club team.  As silly as it sounds for someone that has only followed a team for two years, I've strangely developed my "sports passion" for LIV quite quickly.  When they win, I'm pumped and I'm devastated at a loss.  As such, a weekend of EPL football is easy for me to enjoy.  I passionately pull for LIV and pull against rivals.

I'm rambling, but I do wonder what you guys think about the club v International football.  Do you care more about one v the other?

I've very much enjoyed both the Euros so far and I'm just a casual fan.  I've been highly entertained.  I'm sure deciding games by PKs doesn't do much for true soccer fans, but come on....that Italy/Germany game was awesome.

I am not sure if it is the booze, or the Portugal... but I really want to see a Welshman break Ronaldo's nose with a swift elbow to the face.

That's pretty much the way it goes with the international game when the players don't play together all year. Sometimes there are exceptions with European powers who draw many of their players from one club - Spain/Barca, Germany/Bayern, Italy/Juventus - but for the most part tactics are built to be defensively solid and counter attack rather than trust unfamiliar faces to put together long strings of passes.

Despite losing to Portugal, Wales will be ranked ahead of England in the next FIFA rankings (11th v 13th).

Reasons why club level produces more attractive games than international matches

  1. Limited practice time with international squads
  2. Inability to plug roster gaps via transfers
  3. Tendency to play conservatively in tournament formats
  4. Pepe
In spite of all this, international tournaments can produce the greatest games that will be remembered for generations by even casual fans.

Counterpoint:

1. Colombian girls

Hopefully a better game today that we saw yesterday. The only real excitement for me was waiting for Ronaldo's reaction when Nani stole another goal from him. At least he was onside this time.

It seems Loew may start Schweini in midfield with Kroos today, with Hummels out (https://sendvid.com/naozu6yc) and either add adding Mustafi for a back 3 or bring someone like Draxler or Sane up front. An early goal either way will help, as usual. GLLLL

No way.  This seafoam Portugal uniform is the best of the tournament.  They should wear it all the time.
:goodposting:

Note- They were supposed to wear the red, but the refs were wearing red and made Portugal change.

Really looking forward to this game...France has seemed to grow into the tournament, while the Germans are seemingly fielding a reactionary line-up.  Pogba, Payet & Antoine can make an indelible mark on French football history with a win here.  French "aristocrats" vs the "sans culottes" of Germany...(maybe not a fair assessment, but let me run with it...)

I expect Battiston would agree with your assessment.
