2017 Summer Football Tournament- Tournament cancelled, everyone go home (1 Viewer)

Maybe it was being around a significant amount of arrogant English fans in the late 80's and early 90's always having to listen to them talk about how they were gods gift to the soccer world and that US Soccer would never amount to anything, but this might be the only team I enjoy watching fail time and again and again and again.

After so many underwhelming performances over and over through out the years, I think we need to put to bed the idea of upsets, choking, or any other term one might use to soften the blow.

England as a international footballing country is really no better than a large group of countries that sit outside the top 8-12 teams every year.

True.  But they'll be one of the favored countries again in Russia.  Same as it ever was.

They are a legit top 10-15ish team (a whole level/tier or two above the US for example) but they can't get out of their own way once they get out of Euro qualifying for either the WC or Euro's.

The record stands for itself.  It is not one group of players or one set of coaches.  This lack of achievement seems systemic and they have had their fair share of bad luck as well losing on PK's so many times too.

It would be different if they were like Holland.  They have no major championships in the last 25 years either but in that time period England has been to one semi final (in which they hosted) and Holland has been to 6 (including 2 finals), one of the semi finals they co-hosted.

I guess the Hodgson resignation was relatively meaningless.  I thought he was signed through the WC but his contract was up in 2 weeks.

The way England exits major tournaments always adds to the fun.  In the past two decades, they've been eliminated on penalties (of course) but also with Beckham and Rooney sent off, Seaman flapping at Ronaldinho's free kick, Lampard's disputed non-goal, early losses in the groups and failure to qualify.

Maybe England should just delete their Soccer account

This group of exits included the worst save in WC history in 2010 by Robert Green against the US when Dempsey's dribbler some how went in which caused them to eventually come in second in the group and get fed to Germany in the round of 16 in which they got smoked.

True but Lampard's disallowed goal would have tied the game going into the break.  England would have only had to hold Germany scoreless for 75 more minutes and they could havecrashed out on penalties again.

Both Spain and England looked poor today. A collection of talent playing under their potential. Blame falls squarely on the tactical setup for both managers, IMO. For example, I don't recall either Juanfran or Alba playing anywhere near this poorly over the last two seasons, and that's just the defense, let alone the soft play from Cesc and Iniesta. No one had any steel in the middle of the pitch. Like I said, they made a big mistake not taking Gabi into the team. The dude would be right at home against Italy, getting stuck in just right.  Everyone thinks Busquets is better, and maybe he is technically better, but Jesus Christ the guy is a ####ay of the highest order. No one would say that about Gabi.

Del Bosque relied on the players that won things 8 years ago. They can't play that way any more. He had the chance to select a younger, more energetic, and more direct team and he chose not to.

As for England, I love when they crater out of a tourney. It's great that it happened to Iceland too, although France crushing them would have been awesome too. But Hodgson got it really wrong tactically. Why is Kane taking corners and why is Rooney starting? Just stupid IMO.

Anyway, I love the way Italy plays. Bunch of "mediocre" guys with a stout and well drilled back 3 + Buffon. It's like a club team that has been playing well and winning for months. Everyone knows exactly where they and their teammates should be. Plus, it looks like they are having fun doing it. Spain and England looked like they were in pain, even when the score was tied. No joy, just the mechanics of play under immense intense pressure.

Good riddance to both teams. Neither deserved a result today, nor in this tournament.

Vive le bleu! It's theirs to lose IMO.

9.8 million viewers watched the Copa America final.  It was the most watched soccer game ever on FS1 that did not include a US National team.  And Univision just killed as usual in its big markets.

The game on Univision out drew ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox COMBINED in a handful of cities and Univision demographics as always skewed young.  No wonder they crushed their revenue projections.

There is no way this tournament does not happen again in the future here in the US.

E A S Y

I forget again, who won the group that year?

Seriously, what a great day of soccer today.

I don't know that I've see the Azzurri play this well since 2006.  They were gassed at the end but ### #### those guys play hard.  Gigi is a god.  Conte's strategy of high press and not letting Spain build from the back was amazing.  Cesc, Iniesta, Busquets were all totally and completely anonymous.  Honestly, I did not realize Busquets was even in the game until close to the 75th minute.  I thought Silva had some moments.  That Pelle goal reminds me of a certain other insurance goal, one that we're sure to see in the buildup to the Germany game.  Onward and upward, forza, etc.

And what a great win from Iceland.  I always, always think England is massively overrated, but there's no way they should've lost this game.  They looked absolutely horrible.  They got that first goal and it seems like they took their collective foot off the pedal immediately.  You could see it in the players' eyes in the second half, how terrified they looked.  They almost looked resigned to their fate.  I know some people hate on Macca, but he wasn't wrong when he started talking about how you can't conflate the richest domestic league in the world with the best international team.  They're not related, and it showed today.  Just a calm and collected effort from Iceland, desperate defending and finishing when it counted.

college teammates have been on an email frenzy, including our two icelandic alums, both of whom were at the game. one just sent a pic of him, front row with beardeymcbeardson running by shirtless after a goal or win.

eta: the pic rules really a lot.

With Euros kicking off tomorrow, some numbers on the squads:

Three nations have zero players that play domestically - Ireland,  Iceland and Northern Ireland.

One nation has every player with all 23 playing domestically - England.
Even with England's 23 players gone, the PL is still the most represented league at the Euros among the final 8 with 45 players remaining. Italy has 30, Bundesliga 18, Ligue 1 14, Liga 12. An additional 6 players are at English clubs in the Championship, and 2 more are in League 1, the third tier of English football (Simon Church at MK Dons and Johan Gudmonsson at Charlton At.) bringing the total players who are at English clubs to 53.

Some interesting numbers before the Germany v Italy match on Saturday.

There have been 20 World Cups, Italy and Germany have won 8 of them.  4 each.
At least one of them has been in the finals 13 of the 20 times, and in the semis 16 of the 20 times.
Both were in the semis 5 times, and met in the finals once.

There have been 14 Euro tournaments, Italy and Germany have won 4 of them.  3 for Germany, 1 for Italy.
At least one of them has been in the finals 9 of the 14 times, and in the semis 10 of the 14 times.
Both were in the semis 4 times.

In these competitive tournaments (not friendlies) they have met 8 times and Italy has won 4 and they have drawn 4.

That means Germany are 0-4-4 against Italy when it counts.

Can't wait for the streak to continue.

Forza!
Unfortunately, it looks like DeRossi & Candreva will both be out (injury) as well as Motta (YC's), along with Veratti & Marchisio (pre-tournament).  This MF is now very thin; interested to see if this forces Conte to adjust by abandoning his beloved 3-5-2.  DeRossi is a huge loss; his defensive cover & ball distribution have been integral to Italy's counter-attack.  Looks like Sturaro will get the start  .  Doesn't  matter, no excuses at this stage..."Survive & Advance!". Forza Azzuri!

lower left guy is my old teammate. who also lied to all of us about what the icelandic national bird was. I will exact revenge someday.
some more shots from a different guy (left), who played after I had graduated.

for four years my team struggled to win the Ivies and just barely failed every year (after winning 8 straight before I got there)- we were pretty stacked top to bottom (couple of Jamaican internationals, Icelandic, Israeli, couple of All-england schoolboys) with a deep bench. a couple of years later- the team was empty... worst talent I had seen there ever.... until this icelandic kid comes along. my team would pass, move, intricate ####... this team- not one guy would've started for us. their gameplan was just bomb the ball upfield as best they could and hope the viking beats 3 or 4 guys to get a goal. which he did- over and over... they won the freaking league riding his shoulders. He ended up playing pro ball around Scandinavia and even spent a couple seasons at Stoke where he scored a fair bit. google tells me he scored a goal against France in a 1-1 game in Euro qualifying in 98' after the WC.

btw- I've loved the color coordination of the Euro fans this cup. I don't recall seeing it so well delineated before- with everybody wearing the same jersey/color... huge swaths of blue, green, yellow, red... etc.

who are you?

I like Bon Jovi and I like the thought that I could one day, potentially, send my spouse back to someone else.  While I am indifferent to DirectTV, I like the spot.

ETA:  EFFF Portugal.  Not sure why I dislike them so much, but they suck asscock.
