I think a natural consequence of the playoff system is that people realize bowls are meaningless. There are too many.
But the biggest issue I have with college football is the horrific way they design their schedule. New Years day should be THE day for college football, end of discussion. One big day is better than 10 crappy days. College bowls just aren't relevant enough to be on every single day, and they start to lose their luster. Less is more.

Agreed but so many of them exist only to provide programming content for ESPN and the like.

I remember talking with friends back in the mid-80s and saying how there were too many bowls. I specifically remember laughing about the Cherry Bowl (name struck us as funny 
) . How many bowls were played after the 1985 NCAA football season? 18.
How many were played after the 2017 season? 40 counting the title game. For 2018, there will only be 39 -- I guess one of the minor ones went away.

I have no problem with the number of bowls. If I want something random to watch on 12/27, I'm happy there's an option.
As long as no one is required to watch the Belk Bowl in order to be able to watch the Rose Bowl or the playoff games or whatever else you want, I can't understand why people complain.

What are your thoughts on the 6-win requirement? Why does that even exist? Any reason 5-7 or 4-8 teams shouldn't go bowling if all other parties (stadiums, broadcasters, advertisers, etc.) foster the extra games?

Maybe way down the road, minor-bowl season will be a good time to schedule rivalry games that had to go away due to conference realignments (e.g. LSU vs. Tulane, TCU vs. SMU). Or games featuring Big State U vs. state directional schools that never happen due to politics (e.g. Ole Miss vs. Southern Miss, Florida vs UCF).
Yeah. It is a pretty dead period for fantasy football and the soccer I follow. Not exactly any TV shows coming out that time of the year either.

There actually is something to this (go talk to a Hogs fan about Arkansas State or vice versa). In reality, scheduling in the SEC is crap and the risk/reward for both schools just doesn't match. Texas couldn't put Arkansas on theirs because losing to them would be too great of a wound while a win gives you nothing. Arkansas has played TCU recently.

I don't complain about the large number of meaningless bowl games. I understand its a by-product of amateur football programs that pay assistant coaches $1m+ and have budgets in excess of $100m. But I do lament the fact that the January 1 bowl games have completely lost the sense of tradition and excitement they once had. The college football playoff system, and BCS before it, didn't solve any problems that needed solving and have ruined the most exciting part of the game, with no benefit other than financial.

People are weird and/or dumb about the number of bowl games. Do you guys go "Beer is bad now, there just too many flavors. I liked it better when it was just budweiser and pabst". Watch the games you want and don't watch the games you don't want. Let me know if you need anymore pro life tips.

The tie ins are creating sleeper matchups. It's quality, not quantity that is the problem.
The playoffs are part of the issue also, making the tie-ins a little more lopsided at times.
Add that with lots of players opting to not even play, and you get a pretty meh bowl season. I don't have any great solutions, and increasing the playoff so we can watch ND get slaughtered every year instead of every other isn't the answer either.

Too many Alabama and Clemson fans would equate San Francisco and San Jose to Soddom and Gomorrah. They wouldn't want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Of course that message board is like 3% people that attended any college, 4% that have a kid or distant relative that attended, and 93% that use the internet for sharing Facebook news, saying snowflake, and looking up Wikipedia articles about their rivals to denigrate them on other message boards.

You typically get ad buys on ratings, not viewers. Viewers will always show higher than ratings right? When do they release the rating?

I didn't consider going, but even people who booked flights months ago said the prices were already insane, and they're even worse now. Even in 2009, you could get tickets cheap at the game in Pasadena, but that was weather related. I took a beating on an extra ticket I got for the playoff game against Ohio State in New Orleans. I sold it on the street for like $65, and the guy who eventually sat in it said he paid the scalper $60 (paid $2-300 through the school). There were people last week already asking for half of face value for the tickets they knew they were getting, and it's comical that others have theirs listed for face.
I don't see how it can continue this way. People have stopped ordering tickets through the school, knowing they can get a better deal in the secondary market.

Ohio State in the Rose Bowl is money. Makes no sense to the rest of college football fans, but Buckeye fans love that bowl.

i dont get the people who say no more bowls there are too many bowls blah blah blah if you do not like a bowl then do not watch that bowl but there is probably someone somewhere who does like it remember when we used to sit around and talk about the beef o brohan bowl well there were proababaly about a billion people who thought that bowl was stupid but we liked pitbull at half time and so we watched and it was totally awesome so brohans just bowl and let bowl that is my motto for life take that to the bank bromigos

Of the 25 or so people I went with to the Rose Bowl BCS Champ in ‘09...I only know of 2 going this trip. First time in 17 years vs now, fantastic football destination vs not, cheaper to LA, etc. It’ll be back to close to 25 if we make it next year....so I think it’s mostly just not an exciting location.Capella said:

San Francisco is great. First time my wife and I went we took the train from the airport and got off near some market she wanted to go to. Climbed up the subway stairs to get our first glimpse of being in downtown.... just as 100+ naked people rode by on bicycles. I laughed (probably louder than I should have) while my wife was:

They do. It's not well known but the CFP has an agreement with a "consolidator" to push tickets through the secondary market. A consolidator is a partner broker who either gets exclusivity to inventory, or sells based on a consignment percentage where the rest is given back to the team/venue/promoter. They did this starting last year and were fooled by the market that UGA playing in Atlanta against Alabama caused. Nobody knows exact numbers but some in the industry feel it's around 12,000 tickets. Everyone, including large retail site execs have bragged about how well that went. They are dumbfounded when I tell them this year was going to be a problem and that had they not tried to push so many tickets through that the ticket last year could have reached Auburn/Oregon heights nearing $5000 a seat at one time. The fact that seats stayed just over $1000 for most of the time leading up to that game was lower than it should have been IMO. The secondary just can't handle that kind of volume efficiently in such a short time period. There's no way this inventory sells through, none. There were 8000 tickets on Stubhub this morning and I guarantee you there are thousands not even listed by the consolidator. The days of open markets where the fans get these through onsales are over. The bowls and pro teams today only want these type structures as they want to be involved in secondary profits and don't have to worry so much about donors and repercussions from them and open records requests the way a state funded university would.
