2020 MLB Spring Training (2 Viewers)

This whole situation reminds me of the high stakes poker scene in The Sting. Robert Shaw rigs a hand and Paul Newman ends up with four 3’s. Shaw ends up with four 9’s and is sure he will win (because the hand was rigged). But Newman reveals his hand . . . and has four J’s. Afterwards, Shaw asks his goons, “What was I supposed to do, call him for cheating better than me?”

That’s similar to what is going on in MLB. Teams don’t really want to point the finger at any other team because several of them aren’t completely innocent. But they aren’t thrilled someone had a scheme that was more effective than their own. So they are in a tough spot and it would be hard to really voice their outrage if they had their own ways to try to bend the rules.

Just read the Correa interview. Thought he came off great. He made excellent points about most of the runs in the 2017 WS at home being scored with men on second base.

You know. When stealing signs is ok.

Girardi’s quotes about it tell me pretty much all I need to know about NY and exactly what you’re talking about.

Will they get caught? If there’s a God, yes.

Except everybody on every team is voicing their outrage

Really? Correa came off horribly. If he came out and said I understand the vitriol against us but I want to make some corrections to the narrative, then maybe his points would be taken seriously. But to express indignation toward other players because they don’t know what players in the organization have refused to say just made things worse. There was a way to correct the narrative while being contrite and understanding of why people would think that way given the mistrust the Astros have earned. Now he just seems like a liar on the defensive, lashing out.

Why is he a liar?

Was reading the KC Star this morning, and it was refreshing to see the quotes from Danny Duffy (pitcher) regarding the Astros scandal:

“I’m not a perfect man,” Duffy said. “I don’t appreciate cheating in this game, but I know that they’re getting worn out right now. It’s hard for me to say. Obviously, you never condone that. It’s a bummer dude. I think that’s the best way I could put it without getting too in-depth. It’s a bummer.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how the league handles it. It’s going to be interesting to see how the commissioner’s office handles the possible repercussions, whatever they may be from teams that feel like they need to do what they have to do.”

Duffy said he and his catchers “knew enough” and made adjustments when playing the Astros because of the suspicion that they were stealing signs. He wouldn’t say exactly when he heard about the Astros’ tactics, but just said that it was “out there” among players.

“I have friends on that team. I’m not going to bury them here,” Duffy said. “I don’t like what they did. I think it’s horrible for the game. The game has a black eye right now. It’s not for me to say. I’m not shining my halo. I’m a flawed human being, but I’m bummed out about the way that World Series unfolded.”

I'm just glad he didn't take a holier than thou approach like a lot of guys are doing.

Jomboy now posting pictures of Altuve saying he had a t-shirt under his jersey in one and then didn’t when he hit the homer. Not sure when this lunacy is going to end. 😂

What if the tattoo is actually made of metal and by using some elaborate magnetic device, they can cause the tattoo to vibrate? I mean he wouldn’t take his shirt off, so this seems like the most logical next leap. BURN HIM!!!!

We have Manfred saying repeatedly that there is no evidence of buzzers or anything in 2019. Players all adamantly deny it. But the twitter lynch mob wants it to be true.

How can a negative be proven?

If I say that I don’t believe there’s a God, how can I prove that? (For example)

Jomboy is like religious people saying “you just got to have faith and believe me”.

Buzzer, no buzzer.  Your team cheated to win and got caught.  You sound like the husband who got busted having an affair but is loudly defending himself because he FOR SURE didn't do anal with his side piece.

Astros cheated.  The degree of cheating is irrelevant.  You don't come across any better by proving you weren't using buzzers.  Just stop.

I can’t prove they weren’t using buzzers. That was the point of my post...

It’s probably pretty relevant to Jose Altuve. What if he’s blackballed out of the HOF someday because of it?

Even if he somehow never cheated, he knew his team was cheating. He could’ve spoken up.

Whatever consequences come now...too bad

He's always going to associated with a team that cheated no matter what his level of personal cheating was involved.  He's tainted forever now, like it or not and his HOF candidacy should include it.

I find the take in this thread that, if this were the Red Sox or Yankees, the media wouldn't be covering it as hard all kinds of amusing.

Barry Bonds is the best baseball player I have ever seen play.  I might even argue he was the best hitter baseball has ever seen.  I have no problem with the HOF keeping him out for cheating.  Altuve has to live with his Scarlet Letter.

What if he wins the MVP because he was?
Correa yesterday said he wasn’t involved.

But we have a dude in NY living in mom’s basement who says he was. Lots of people seem to believe it. If he’s full of it, it seems kind of unfair to me.

But hey, call me a homer and pile on to me. It’s the easy thing to do.

You keep blaming jomboy, fans, and media but not once blame his cheating teammates for getting an "innocent" Altuve caught up in the mix or Altuve himself for not speaking up. You really do sound like a child sometimes.

You’re a homer and your views on this entire situation are terrible.

Again, he had how long to speak out about his teammates (at least) flat out cheating and chose not to

Screw him

They were doing it because they knew all the other top, contending teams were doing it and they knew they were.

Dear God I hope everything comes out. Especially about NY and LA.

You guys are insufferable lol.

Do you guys think it’d be fair if one of the top CFB teams had to play by the book?

Just give out scholarships and that’s it. Say, Alabama. How much of a mastermind would Saban be if it was that way for him and everyone else got to do what they do...

I can tell you that if it comes out that the Dodgers were doing what the Astros did i won’t be in here defending them

🤷🏻‍♂️

Idk what everyone wants me to do. I understand why it happened. Don’t know, maybe the Astros started the culture, maybe not. It’s not like I’m gonna disown them and go to another team when I’ve followed them since 1980.

There were 8 teams named, I believe, in the bleacher report article.

Even Washington was said to have “dabbled”.

If the whole story gets buried it’s bad for the Astros. For sure.

So are you saying there was nothing being said about the Astros before the report came out? I’m not the one embarrassing myself.
Nobody at all cares about Houston or any sports team in Houston. Houston has no haters because nobody has the energy to care. I couldn’t even find Houston on a map and I’ve been to that big dumb state a bunch of times. It’s there somewhere with all the oil rigs, burnt ends and Trump signs on the front porch of a house that looks like every other house in the neighborhood.

Boston on the other hand would create a firestorm if the situation were anything similar. It wouldn’t even be comparable.
