2020 (now 2021) Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Closing ceremonies 8/8 | USA finishes with most gold, silver, bronze AND overall medals (2 Viewers)

While you may now be questioning doing golf play by play at 3am, just want you to know I appreciated it this am gb @BobbyLayne

I tried to stay up and watch it - fell asleep around the 10th hole and woke back up to see the last two holes.  A 7-man playoff sounded fun but it was like 3:30 or something at that point and I turned the TV off.  Nice job Xander!

South African-born Slovakian patriot

Sounds completely altruistic

I know he's up there in age and probably wouldn't be picked or make it on his own but I'm curious if he would be eligible for the Ryder Cup based on this.  I believe he's played in the Presidents Cup in the past.

Its a Ryder Cup year so I’d say no

He is hated on a Patrick Reed level by other players so tbh I think he’d have to play his way on

presumably at OWGR #201 he’s not close on the Euro list (& pretty sure wouldn’t be eligible bc I think it’s UK or the European continent)

This. Also why struggling Rickie Fowler might have a better choice as a selection than Billy Horschel. One is chill, one is a double pump espresso.

Plus rumors are that Paddy Harrington is going to use 2 of his 4 Captains choices on Ryder Cup stalwarts  Poulter and Sergio.

every player in the top ten went over to shake Xander’s hand after he finished

Sabatini raised his water bottle from 100 yards away

There's a guy named 'LOSER' on the Argentinian men's volleyball team.

Pronounced 'Loh-sair' so they say

Men’s volleyball just not good enough this year. Some great games, but they don’t deserve the medal rounds. Huge disappointment based on pre-tournament expectations.

Each match was a carbon copy of the previous losses - terrible job serving which prevented them from putting pressure on the opponent.  You can't give away so many free points at this level.  Very disappointing performance.

I saw it mentioned up thread, then I watched it on tape this afternoon.

How in the hell did the challenge get challenged and overturned in the women’s beach volleyball?
Even though I read about it here before watching I still couldn’t believe what I was seeing

wtf??

Huh...thought I posted this earlier- saw a quote from a 100m women's competitor that said the Jamaican winner switched coaches/teams prior to the Olympics which she thought cause their rift.

I totally don’t understand why the young American runner in the 800m who fell didn’t get to advance but the dude behind him who tripped him did.  Anybody have an explanation?

Men's team foil takes the bronze, giving the US their second fencing medal in the final event.

Had a lead against ROC in the semis, but Alexander Massialas - who just never looked comfortable, was beaten 6-1 despite taking a 40-39 lead into the final round.

Nice to see Race Imboden get in for the semis and finals, after not being able to participate in the individual event.

Massialas, Imboden, and Gerek Meinhardt were all a part of the 2016 team foil team who also took bronze.  Two Olympics in a row.

Overall, perhaps a minor disappointment for the US in the fencing realm.  They were the #1 seed in men's team foil and settled for bronze, and neither of the two star men's foil fencers could pick up an individual medal.  And no medals in women's sabre, an event in which US women have traditionally done very well.

All in all, though, proud of the fencers and the way they represented the US.

I was surprised by that too.  I guess they must have some how concluded the American was at fault.  The announcers didn't seem to have much to say about it after the decision was rendered.

To make it clear...I think all three women trained together, and then the one split off.

Looked to me like the American runner moved from outside to the inside, and didn't have enough room for himself.

watching the not so plausibly live track replay & Gabby Thomas is using four safety pins to put her name on the front of her uniform. Just struck me as absurdist. It’s the Olympics, world class athlete / Harvard grad, “richest nation in the world”...safety pins?

them Sheilas are giving Sweden one hell of a tough match ... dominating back end of the first half

No rainbow delays in T&F eh. Any safety issue?

Ya know if you’re running dead last in your 400M hurdles I think it’d be good schtick (& immensely satisfying) to just rage kick the last couple hurdles. FOUR FREAKING YEARS *thwack* TO GET DRENCHED *pow*

ETA Just me right?

Stayed up to watch the Women’s Indoor Volleyball team finish pool play last night. Couple tree things:

  • USA is ranked 1st in the World (20-2 this year)
  • beat Italy in last night exciting match 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12)
  • they won Pool A with a 4-1 record. They lost in straight sets to ROC in their previous game when their best scorer/spiker (Jordan Thompson) rolled an ankle
  • they ran into more adversity last night when their best setter (Jordyn Poulter) turned her left ankle badly, but came back strong the last two sets.
  • the two replacement players (Annie Drews & Micah Hancock) were great last night
  • they’ve been pushed to five sets only three times all year - two of them came in the last three games
  • moving to the quarterfinals; next opp TBD (4th place Pool A - winner of Japan/Dominican Republic today) - playing Wednesday Aug 4, Semifinals Aug 5/6, Medal games Aug 7/8
  • USA has never won Gold but have been on the podium the last three Olympics
  • Coached by the legendary Karch Karily since 2013, it feels like this has been building for awhile. They’ve won Worlds under Karily and perennially a top team.
You too can become a USA women’s volleyball expert at this website.

Have the Olympics on in the office w/ the sound off.  Women's weightlifting is on.  I didn't realize it was women's until they cut to commercial...

Think I'm going to find a different event to watch.

Similarly, Alica Schmidt should be allowed to run in the name of world peace.
Throw her off the 10m diving platform or something, she just needs screen time.

I've read a few articles, as I didn't see the event, but is the gist of it the U.S. women's soccer team got beat 1-0 by Canada, and Canada's only shot on goal was the penalty kick that resulted in their 1 point?
