2020 (now 2021) Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Closing ceremonies 8/8 | USA finishes with most gold, silver, bronze AND overall medals (3 Viewers)

Sydney may end up running a sub 51 at some point, something that would have been unthinkable just 3 years ago. Muhammad won the Gold Medal in Rio with a 53.13

Man, our USA female wrestler is DEFINITELY in the top 10 of female wrestlers I've ever seen on a world-side stage.  Especially considering her opponent apparently doesn't quite understand the rules or even the sport.

There was a really just now between the Dominican Republic vs USA women’s volleyball that was amazing. Many digs were had

That's, um, interesting rules. I can see why some would be upset over this:

Mboma's silver stoked controversy after the runner was disqualified from the 400-meter race for elevated testosterone levels.

The complex testosterone regulations in track and field have become an issue again at the Olympics after Namibian teenager Christine Mboma won a silver medal in the 200 meters after being banned from some other events because of her natural hormone levels.

Mboma was one of two 18-year-old Namibians to surprisingly qualify for Tuesday’s 200 final. Her teammate, Beatrice Masilingi, is also affected by the testosterone rules. But their bans only apply to races between 400 meters and one mile, allowing them to run in the 200 at the Olympics.

Mens 200m final was fun.

The pairs synchronize swimming was mesmerizing.  I can't even tread for 5 seconds and they're doing that!

Shame. Shame. Shame.

Only the second US woman to ever get gold... the other lost in a semi final this morning to another defending gold medalist.

Such a beautifully refreshing athlete.

America needs more people like her representing.

Loves her country.  And we're loving her back.

Am I the only one whose mind was completely blown yesterday by the revelation that a runner's foot crossing the finish line in track does not count as finishing the race?  I'm struggling to think of the last time something shocked me to this degree.

Didn't know that either. Which race was it?

Acting like the world's most well-toned college students, several Olympic athletes partied on their way out of Tokyo, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Or at least, a broken bed and the kind of mess that needs a mop to clean.

Australian media is reporting that members of the men's rowing and rugby teams left their rooms in Tokyo's Olympic Village in “a messy and unacceptable state,” according to the Australian Olympic Committee. Crimes against decorum included a hole in a wall, a destroyed cardboard bed, and vomit in a location where vomit is not supposed to be.

I believe this begs the question......where exactly IS vomit supposed to be?

2nd heat of the men's 200m semi-finals (the one with Noah Lyles in it).

Others posting about this are correct - it's based on the torso breaking the plane of the finish line.  I would have bet a lot of money that it was just whatever body part crossed first (presumably only as long as the body part was still connected to the rest of the body).

I say it's supposed to be exactly where it HAS to be

The trash cans at the end of a rollercoaster ride.

Definitely all over the bathrooms/kitchen sinks/hedges of any frat house throwing a party.

And in the nasty green bowl that mom gives you when you're sick as a grade schooler to keep by your bed "just in case", only to then see the same bowl used for that weird salad the next Sunday after church and the contents suspiciously look nearly identical to the vomit that was in it the previous Tuesday night.

For some reason they changed the name to artistic water dancing or something dumb like that.
Personally, I find it creepy cuz of the heavy makeup and robotic movements.

I'm definitely unqualified to make this assessment, but if I'm a 28 year old ex NFL WR I'm putting a handball team together and obliterating these European "athletes."

Sport seems ripe for disruption.

I think they changed the name to "artistic" because there's a solo event now. Agree on the creepy factor though.

I generally have a hard time with sports where your makeup or sparkles on your clothing can affect your score.

I absolutely LOVE this speed climbing.  Best part is the climber who screws up and falls and is just hanging there by a rope flailing around like a kid throwing a tantrum on a swing.  Hard to look tough when you're suspended in air. :lmao:

That or some recent grad division 2 football and basketball guys.  People that didn't necessarily make it into the big leagues (hell, baseball guys too).  Doesn't seem to be much reason other than we aren't that familiar with the sport...that we can't be damn good at it.

There's a good (and short) Ringer podcast on this topic: https://www.theringer.com/2021/7/27/22595375/handball-rules-why-isnt-team-usa-good-at-it

The short summary is: The US sucks at handball and always has.  Not like we suck at soccer or rugby or other sports, we suck in handball to a historically bad level.  Like, losing to Greenland bad (population, 60,000).  There is no question the US would benefit if basketball/football, etc. athletes played handball.  However, they'd have to invest some time to learn the game, because its more than just stepping on the court, learning the rules, and being fast/strong/hops.

Sure, my strategy would be find DBs and WRs in their 20s recently retired from the NFL.   Practice together for a few years.  Dominate the 5'9" 225lb guy from Belgium.

that would work too...I was thinking NFL guys might have the means to do it, but you could find some rich college athlete kids too I suppose.

There is skill, but it's not like Golf or ping pong type skill.  Athleticism matters as far as I can tell.

When I played my JC ball back in the early 90s, we had two guys get invited out to Colorado Springs to try out for the team. They had zero experience.

I’ve always thought basketball skills would transfer better because handball is a court game that involves catching and throwing a ball, dribbling, jumping/hanging in the air, and fast transitions up and down the court between offense and defending. There is some contact, but it’s not violent hitting, more of a soccer/basketball level of contact.  If a group of college level athletes would commit to a couple years training together, I’d agree we could likely compete. The thing referenced in the podcast is that not only do we not have clubs or teams or coaches playing the game here, we don’t have courts.  Basketball courts aren’t helpful due to the dimensions.

All we need is an uber-rich benefactor to finance the whole operation.

One not named DuPont

that guy who crashed into the long jump pit and got carted off made me laugh just a little. i know i’m not supposed to, but that oooof sound he made when he face planted had me and the mrs. chuckling.  almost as much as the woke commercial telling me the wnba will become more popular than the nba, as if the nba’s popularity is somehow an offence against all women.
