2020 (now 2021) Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Closing ceremonies 8/8 | USA finishes with most gold, silver, bronze AND overall medals (1 Viewer)

Men's 50k walk is about to start - no spoilers please.  This will be the last time this event takes place at the Olympics.  In Rio  2016, over 30 of the 80 participants did not finish (typical numbers), and many of those who finished or dropped out needed immediate medical attention.  The early race leader in 2016, Yohann Diniz, opened a huge solo gap early and was lapping stragglers by 15k, but then stopped at a water station for over a minute.  The following pack caught him shortly thereafter when fell over backwards on the street, requiring medical attention. He resumed walking a minute later, but stopped several more times and ended up finishing 8th. There is typically over a one hour gap between the race winner and the last finisher in the 50k.  There will be excrement on the track and vomitting during and after the race. There are no US competitors in the 50k. There is no women's 50k walk.  I think its the most brutal event at the summer Olympics.  GL to all the heroic competitors in this epic race today.

edit - meant to specify, Diniz is the current world record holder, but is not competing this year.

This is fascinating.  Disgusting and fascinating.

I'm rooting for the French guy, Diniz.

He's the guy who hits every rest area on a long trip and still somehow manages to get there ahead of you.

The sashaying hips are mesmerizing

i wish this was the women, lots of junk flopping around

The women and men do a 20k. Its practically a sprint compared to this monster. There is an American couple that do that distance in the Olympics.  I think they're planning to replace the 50k event with a mixed relay of some sort - probably like they did with the triathlon.

Very true. On the coverage I'm watching the lady commented that one of the Japanese competitors didn't look well. Then she followed with "He's having a bit of a vomit" and as they show a close up of him doing it and hitting the ground with his hand in frustration, she states "And he's not happy about it!"

Gable Steveson has the chance to win gold in the Men's Freestyle Wrestling without giving up a point throughout the competition. He is legitimately debating between returning for his senior year of college at University of Minnesota or to turn pro.

For WWE.

Actually true.

This 13 year old Chinese girl in the 30 meter platform dive is an absolute beast. Crushing everyone.

She goes in the water like a dart.

Crazy to go 50k and lose the bronze medal in the last few meters.

That was rough.  Going through all that suffering to see your medal chance evaporate so close to the end has to be gutting.
Or...

How amazing to pull out a medal after being in 4th or worse for the entire race until the very end.

Just thought of this, but a photo finish for this sport must look absolutely ridiculous.

I missed the speed walking, but I imagine it was very similar to the Malcolm in the Middle episode where Hal (Walter White) was competing with a neighbor and they were going to slow motion replay to see if both their feet were on the road at the same time to make sure they were walking and not running.  And they both had the super aerodynamic cycling helmets on.

Watched that last night while in bed. Totally insane. I would make a bigger splash throwing a dart into the water.

Interesting fact. The Canadian walker (Dunfee) that got the bronze in Tokyo was bumped by a Japanese athlete as they jockeyed for position during the last 500m in the 2016 Olympic event and finished 4th. The Japanese athlete was later disqualified due to the bump. The Japanese athlete appealed the dq and won, so he remained the bronze medalist. So, maybe karma owed Dunfee one?

The typhoon was downgraded to a tropical storm but he final round of the Olympic Women's Golf Competition may be canceled tomorrow.

After 3 rounds:

  • 🇺🇸 Nelly Korda 67-62-69 (-15) put a stranglehold on the gold medal in the 2nd round; she played the 5th through 17th in 11 under. The Rolex Ranking #1 (ladies equivalent of OWGR) has 6 LPGA Tour wins including this year’s PGA, her first major. Longtime tennis fans might remember her dad Petr 🇨🇿, winner of the 1998 Australian.
  • 🇮🇳 Aditi Ashook 67-66-68 (-12) Shades of Men’s Silver medalist Rory Sabatini, Rolex Ranking #200. First Indian player on both the LPGA & the European Ladies Tour. Qualified for her tour card for the former st age 17 (youngest ever) and won three times. Still, her form has been off the last two years and she has zero major starts in her career.
  • 🇳🇿 Lydia Ko 70-67-66 (-10) The 2016 Silver Medalist is having a bit of a comeback season. Won her first professional tournament at age 13, her first LPGA win at 15, her second a year later, ascended to World #1 at 17 - all youngest ever records. Spent 85 consecutive weeks as Rolex #1 with 14 LPGA wins & 2 majors. Now 24, she went through winless droughts of 2 years and 3 years. This year her play has been far more consistent and she’s 2nd on the CME Race to the Globe (akin to the FedEx Cup.)
Not sure how they’ll handle the 4-way tie for the Bronze if they shorten the tournament? Hannah Green 🇳🇿 Emily Pederson 🇩🇰 and Mone Inami 🇯🇵 are also at -10.

Ashook was okay tee to green but was putting lights out.

Golf channel had somebody on last night saying models had storm further away and they'd start at first light. She also said if 72 couldn't be finished, they'd revert to 54 hole scores. My guess is all 4 tied for Bronze would medal, especially with host country involved.

That would be a popular decision.

The Japanese girl went long on #18 & couldn’t get up n down, so she dropped out of solo bronze position. IIRC she was in the penultimate group.

womens olympic tee times pushed up to 530 pm Eastern. Leaders tee off 718 pm Eastern. Going off both tees in threesomes.

To be fair, when you did a relay race in grade school, you would wait until you had the baton before running.
Even after the botched handoff the USA anchor moved into 3rd place at full stride with a chance to close to at least silver.  He was passed by three other guys to finish 6th.  The handoff was awful but he did have a chance to medal.  Just got smoked.

sorry if this is a Honda

San Marino sent five athletes to the Olympics this year. Three of them won medals; two in Trap Shooting and one in Wrestling. They finish their campaign with one Silver and two Bronze.

Historic Games for the country with just 33,600 inhabitants.

Very cool...knew nothing about the place.  When they showed it on the map in opening ceremonies...it looked like just be Italy.  Read the wiki on it...kind of interesting actually.

Sweden/Canada appear to be heading to extra time in the women's final ... Sweden was in control most of the way, up 1-nil at the 34' mark ... Canada tied at 68' on a pk.

🇨🇦 them Canucks are a tough bunch, eh? 🇨🇦
