Hindsight is always 20/20. When you have HOF talent, you do everything you can to keep it around.

But it's the 21st century Raiders, the defense was terrible with Mack and still terrible without him. So does it really matter? They were never able to figure out how to build around Mack anyway. This organization finds a way to screw everything up, no matter who's in charge. Al has been gone 10 years and it's like he never left.
The problem is that Gruden can’t draft.   He should be trading away draft picks for good players, not trading away great players for draft picks that he will waste.

I like the drafts since Mayock came in. I haven't done it, but I suspect if you were to objectively grade the last three Raiders drafts from top to bottom, you'd find more hits than the vast majority of teams in the league.

FA, OTOH, was an unmitigated disaster - at least in terms of the freed up Mack funds. Regardless of draft results, I still wouldn't have traded Mack - and have said that many times. That was a no-win move.

I give credit to Gruden for Kolton Miller which makes me feel better about Leatherwood. You can go all the way back to Matt Stinchcomb. Gruden knows how to draft slightly above average linemen in middle of the 1st round. I'm not writing off Ruggs yet. Yes, Lamb probably should have been the pick but that's not Ruggs' fault, he still has a chance to be a great WR.

After this season, there is not going to be any doubt that Lamb was the obvious and correct pick by a mile.   You don’t pass up a true potential WR1 for a little decoy.

Ateman cut

Darron Lee on IR

Stills waived with injury designation
i preferred ateman over doss   but this bodes well for turner

that LB room lookin empty :oldunsure:

do you know what the injury to stills was?  he looked very mediocre in the game, but i didn't see him get hurt.

Never disclosed from what I have seen. Stills had a social media post saying something along the lines of he would be ok.

I wonder if they will try to add him to PS. He was grabbing a lot of attention in camp. Adding McCoy made it harder to keep him though.

I expect Johnathan Hankins, Solomon Thomas, Quinton Jefferson, Darius Philon, and Gerald McCoy to be our DT's (damn deep rotation... and add Cle on passing downs). Stills would be a great add for PS. I don't know how the injury designation does anything one way or the other for that.

Lots of "Raiders should trade Cle to X team for X" type of chatter. Not rumors that they are but I have seen 3 different articles proposing trades.

Mark Barron brought in for a visit. Unsure how hurt Morrow is, I fear White is out for the year and Lee put on IR. KJ Wright is being patient and holding out for more money than anyone, including us, but interest seems to remain.

Unless they find a sucker, they’ll never get 4th overall value for him. May as well keep him.

Dolphins put WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR with a hamstring injury he suffered at practice last week. Bowden, a Raiders 2020 3rd pick pick, was going to have a hard time getting much PT in Dolphins remade WR group. Bowden’s season is done barring a release and injury settlement.

I'd like to say that news makes me feel better, but at the end of the day, it was still a bad pick at a time when we desperately needed defensive help.

tricksy gruden says that morrow will be out longer than white.  no exact injury or timeline given for either.  other than "a while"

For a 6th and we get a 7th back. Worth the swing for the experience and the knowledge of the system. Plus, I think this puts us in a better position with negotiating with KJ Wright.

Well..

That could be good news for White.

This is about making roster moves. Whether talking to FA's (Wright) or talking to teams about trades (Perryman) you don't want them to know how desperate you are. Just like you don't tell the car salesman "I love this car! I got to have it! What is the best deal you can give me?"

i understand the gamesmanship.  i can't imagine any GMs being fooled or tricked by this bit of gruden gold.

why do you think it helps with wright?
Wright is holding out waiting for teams to come up to his asking price. If he knows we are desperate... why move off his asking price? As the season gets closer suitors likely will make other moves and ge will hsve less options and maybe more willing to negotiate.

new guy is vocally anti vax.   :oldunsure:   wonder if that was a factor in car dumping him.
Going down from a 7th from 6th (hopefully very little difference in CAR likely not a playoff team and us being one) for a guy with starting experience in this system and was productive and still under 30? Yes please. Be a flat eaether for all I care. YES PLEASE.

agreed.  but it didn't make much sense for CAR to dump him. just made me wonder, if this was a factor.   we'll see if he passes his physical.

and he better not create any ridiculous covid protocols being imposed on the team.

Almost the entire team is vaccinated. I think one or two were not.

From what it seems they signed him to start and either beat the other guy out. His missed time with with a hip something or other and then someone stepped on his foot. Hard to beat out another guy when not on the field.

Overall, it sounds like CAR really liked what they saw in Carter and didn't want to pay him as a backup who hasn't had time to learn the system.

A little curious on the CAR side (they freed about a million this year but will eat a million now and next year) but works great for us.

I think we still need to hunt out KJ as he plays the SAM/WILL in that D. Perryman is a MIKE.

Mark Barron was brought in for a visit. He could be interesting being that safety/backer tweener they seem to like for SAM. But they didn't sign which either says he lost a stop off that injury or asking too much.

Their top LBs are Shaq and Chinn.

They run one LB sets all the time.

Getting rid of a Perryman is: neither smart nor dumb. No one would have blinked if they cut him.

I get not playing some starters in preseason, but why is Mariota not playing? Is it just insurance against Peterman ever actually getting the start?

Well I get that we have questions with out starters let alone depth, but man are we in trouuuuuuuuble if we have to go to our depth on D.

Me surprised?  No, I have huge Raider-size callouses.  It's just pretty striking how guys can be in actual NFL camps and look like that.

i'm an old slow guy.  pretty sure i could have started at db yesterday.

biggest take away for me, was that McCoy looked decent.  he was surprisingly trim.

It will take time for him to shake off the rust but I believe he will be a solid rotational addition for DT. I think we turned what was a position group that lacked starter quality and have turned it into a strength in depth.

Jefferson and Philon are good players. I believe strongly that Thomas will surprise this year. *note- all three are listed in the 1st team depth chart right now along with Hankins at NT. Speaking of which Hankins has always been an above average NT but just isn't going to ever consistently add pass rush pressure. These other guya along with McCoy and kicking Cle inside at times will.

I like our depth in all position groups except OL. We are going to have to cut some guys that I hate to see us cut but we can only keep 53.

I am feeling like Brown is going to get cut and either Stoner or Turner will round out the WR, making the team based off of being the designated returner. I don't see a return man on the roster. Stoner and Turner were both given chances the last couple of pre-season games. I don't know who gets the nod. If forced to make the pick, I will go with Stoner.

On the other hand, Brown has been 'knicked up' in camp per Gruden and that was given as the explanation as to him playing yesterday. I think that was his last chance to show them he should force them to make another move and I don't think he showed that. With his injury history on top of not showing much in camp... he could be looking for a new job soon.

I said before, I think Ragas makes the roster and they put Richard on IR.

As I mentioned, I think we will be looking at who the other teams cut from their offensive lines. After our starting group of Miller, Incognito, James, Good and Leatherwood... the only guy that I like is Simpson with Morrissey having upside. Another prediction is we cut Martin to keep Morrissey around. So, we likely will keep a G or T or both that we end up cutting to pick up someone else's scraps.

The Perryman trade has completed as he passed the physical. I am guessing Morrow and White get placed on IR. I think we still check in with KJ to see if he is willing to take less pay to play.

In a perfect world, we get a trade offer from a QB needy team but I don't see that happening before cuts so we have Mariota. I think it would be nice to cut Peterman for that roster spot and see if anyone wants him to put on PS but we know Gruden loves his QB's and I think we keep all 3... for now.... but I think Mariota will be on the block if someone's starter goes down early.

Those are my thoughts pre-53 man cuts.

carr, mariota, gruden's boy toy

jacobs, drake, richard, ragas, ingold

ruggs, edwards, brown, renfrow, snead, jones

waller, moreau, carrier

ngakoue, ferrell, crosby, nassib, koonce

hankins, jefferson, psilon, thomas, mccoy

littleton, perryman, morrow, kwiat, muse, deablo, bilal, white

haywood, arnette, hobbs, mullen, robinson
