Scrambling to CYA is the MO of any decent attorney.

What a horrible situation. I hope drugs and alcohol weren’t involved - I’m guessing a high rate of speed was involved.

I’m reserving judgement, but I’m reasonably certain that the Prius wasn’t the fastest car out there that evening. 💡

Yea, I am not reading much into a lawyer... if you have that much money and are well known, any accident whether you do everything right... still would have a lawyer running interference and protecting the client. That is what you pay them to do.

He is looking at 2 years Minimum. As a Nevada attorney I know there is no leeway if he is convicted. If he's above the limit the Court can't let him just walk.

"The charge for DUI causing substantial bodily harm or death is a category “B” Felony, which is the second most severe level of Felony in Nevada law. In this instance, such a crime is punishable by imprisonment in Nevada State Prison system for a minimum term of 2 years and a maximum term 20 years. It also carries a fine of between $2,000.00 to $5,000.00. More importantly, DUI causing substantial bodily harm or death is a non-probationable offense, meaning if you are convicted, you must go to prison."

This could be career ending.

I would hope not, if he takes the right steps from here. But this is almost surely going to derail the rest of this season and may take years to fully come back from. But much bigger things to dwell on in this instance. Prayers to Ruggs and the families of the deceased.

10:53 AM PT -- Cops tell us Ruggs was behind the wheel, driving his Chevrolet Corvette, when he crashed into a Toyota Rav4 around 3:39 AM. The Toyota caught on fire ... and first responders located a deceased person in the SUV.

Ruggs was transported to a local hospital for treatment on non-life-threatening injuries.

Yes, he’s a very young man.  But seeing as he’s being charged with DUI resulting in death, he could see many, many years in prison.

but you’re right. I’ll pray for the victim’s families. It’s a horrific & unnecessary tragedy.

Also, all this happened about 500 yards west of me. Crazy. What a #######. He as a little girl too.
first thing i thought of, was his little girl.  then i wondered about the deceased person and their family.  just awful, all the way around.

i was a 22 year idiot once, i always wonder why these guys drive anywhere when partying.

I drove myself and my employee home from our county fair on Sunday night at 01:20 AM.  A sportscar doing upwards of 130 blew past us weaving in & out of the sparse traffic & was literally an inch from hitting the front of my van.

At those speeds, split second decisions result in life & death.

i was a dumb 22 once, too. Fortunately I never drink & drive, and also fortunately I lacked the means to own a sportscar.

I am scared to ask - what is the BAC limit in NV? Is there any chance for a suspended sentence if he was only slightly past the limit (pure conjecture - no idea yet if he was actually inebriated and if so, to what degree)?

Two years in prison may be justifiable in this instance, all things considered - but it is still an absolute tragedy on all fronts.

This sucks. Someone lost their life and many people's lives changed forever.

The Raiders will still have to play Sunday though and the rest of the year.

John Brown is available. Would make sense to bring him back.

I can't see Ruggs playing again this year with a DUI charge resulting in death.

same.  i work nights.  i've had multiple brushes with morons.  the one that scared me the worst, was when i had a mercedes AMG GT S 63 blow by me at well over 100, and then 5 seconds later, a cop, going faster than the mercedes, blew by me in pursuit.  all on a canyon road that was narrowing from 2, to 1 lane.  about #### my pants.  cop had him pulled over about a mile down the road.

Rotoworld just laid it out:

the charge has a 2 year minimum sentence & a 20 year max. Category B felony.

Just spoke by text with an attorney relative (and Raider fan) who said in these cases it’s never the minimum sentence.

Could definitely be the end of Henry Ruggs as an NFL player.

Was having a discussion just this morning before this broke on how sports in this country usually brush DUIs under the rug and result in little to no punishment. See Mark Few and Tony LaRussa as recent examples. There is no brushing this off. He'll be in jail for a substantial length of time.

I doubt that would make any difference since it resulted in loss of life.

it’s a serious charge & if he indeed showed signs of impairment he was likely past the minimum BAC. Nevada is the same as CA at .08, which isn’t enough to show impairment. And since he’s being charged I have to assume he tested above that (and regardless of breathalyzer, they blood tested him at the hospital.

Two years in prison may be justifiable in this instance, all things considered - but it is still an absolute tragedy on all fronts.
it will likely be much more than 2. They like to make examples out of DUIs like this. Nevada is especially harsh with drug & alcohol stuff IIRC.

It's .08. I don't see the State backing down unless he come in under the limit. And it's a 2 year minimum, probably more. Yeah, it's a disaster all around.

As a practical matter there is no replacing him.

His speed was such a threat that it altered defenses. Edwards has been a great deep threat and has made clutch catches but his ability to do that without Ruggs is questionable.

There is nothing available that replaces what Ruggs represents. The offense will need to adapt to tighter coverage. That's the reality.

For the season... this worries me. Aside from Carr, Ruggs is the most important player to this offense IMO. Waller is the better player but Ruggs speed stresses the opposing defenses on a way that Waller can not. It stretches and opens the field up. Waller goes out Moreau can come in and play well. This will be a significant downgrade for regardless of who takes his spot.
