2021 Las Vegas Raiders - PLAYOFFS!!!! (1 Viewer)

I'm with you - give the receivers a chance.. I'm tired of seeing Carr throwing checkdown passes 3 yards behind the LOS, on every 3rd and long..
GAWD, I am sick of this BS.

Carr has one of the highest yards per attempt in the league. How does he achieve that checking down non-stop?

1st in the league with 20+ yard plays.

7th in the league with 40+ yard plays.

Just stop the silly talk about check downs.

1st in passing yards and tied for 3rd in YPA, so painting Carr as Capt Checkdown in 2021 is a lazy narrative born of many seasons ago.

That said, to be fair, that poster we're piling on was referring to 3rd down plays and I am too lazy to check out Carr's 3rd down numbers, lol. Maybe he's right too, I dunno.

The biggest problem with the third downs is the play calling.

Funny thing about that... I was wondering to myself on Thanksgiving "is there anyone launching that thing that deep that often on 3rd down?" I mean, I was happy since we got like 20 PI calls but it was like... run, short pass and then LAUNCH! Like every set of downs.

Average per attempt is a lame stat.

Carr isn’t the problem. I’ve said it over and over, playcalling and the OL are the issue. Carr moved much better in the Dallas game.  He seemed to bail out the pocket much earlier and had success with it. Carr is an above average qb that doesn’t like to take chances.

Davante will never be a raider, unless it’s 5+ plus years from now.  🤣. GB will franchise him.  The raiders will go after someone like Robbie Anderson, that really makes no sense. 😜

Ok, you don't like that yards per attempt... but total yards, number of 20+ and 40+ throws all show the "check down" crap as being crap. Anyone saying anything about checkdowns isn't watching the game and isn't looking at the stats.

Easy big fella....

i said nothing about capt check down.  I just think ypa is a lame stat. For EVERY QB In the NFL.  you defend Carr like he’s your kid. :lmao:

It isn't a defense... it is just being sick of the attacks/comments on him which is demonstrably false by both watching the games and looking at stats. This narrative of Carr being a bad QB has been going on forever and anyone with any amount of football intelligence can see that is such BS.

The Las Vegas Raiders waived wide receiver Dillon Stoner. The team also signed safety Kavon Frazier to the practice squad and released tackle D.J. Fluker from the practice squad.

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver DeSean Jackson has battled a calf injury this week and was limited Wednesday, but NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports the injury is believed to be minor. Las Vegas designated cornerback Trayvon Mullen for return from injured reserve.

Great numbers, sure.  Ask Dan Marino how that worked out for him...  Don't get me wrong, I love Carr as a person, player, and leader of this team but dude needs to channel his killer instinct when this team needs it.  He does take his shots, but overall, he is cautious - nearly to a fault.  That being said, he is still better than 2/3rds of the league QB's and with any semblance of a defense, would likely lead the Raiders to yearly playoff berths.  Just my opinion.

I get why you say this b/c Carr does come across as 'too safe' too often. But oddly enough, in the clutch, when it's actually winning time (late comebacks, game-sealing drives, etc.) he has been one of the best in the NFL. He's such an odd figure. So much to love and yet there's just something missing at times that makes people continually doubt him. For me, it's the running, or lack thereof. He needs to emulate Gannon, who knew when to run to keep D's honest and how to protect himself when he did. Carr has similar wheels and almost never uses them. He has similar brains too. But his arm is leaps and bounds ahead of Gannon's. If Carr ever figures that part out, I think he'd become a superstar.

Hit 20 mph on that run on Turkey Day. He does have the wheels to go and could do more that way, agreed.

From Coach B's press conference this afternoon:

Waller is doubtful, Nassib is out.
DJax, Nixon, and Kwiatkowski will have a final decision made tomorrow, currently all marked as Questionable.

Washington not at full strength either. Hopefully Raiders can exploit their O-Line issues and Collins' absence.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32779582/washington-football-team-landon-collins-jd-mckissic-ruled-sunday

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Football Team must try to extend its three-game winning streak without two key players -- safety/linebacker Landon Collins and running back J.D. McKissic. Both were ruled out of Sunday's game at the Las Vegas Raiders because of injuries.

Both players were hurt late in Monday's win over the Seattle Seahawks. Collins injured a foot, while McKissic suffered a concussion. Coach Ron Rivera said he didn't know how much time Collins would miss.

It's a pivotal blow for Washington (5-6), as its recent hot streak vaulted it into the seventh and final playoff position in the NFC.

Collins has become a key defensive player while transitioning to a hybrid safety/linebacker role. He has rushed the passer a lot more out of this look -- 20 times in the past five games combined compared to 10 times in the first six, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. He also handles a lot of the communication in the back seven.

Washington's defensive turnaround has been helped in part by Collins as part of a three-safety alignment along with Kam Curl and Bobby McCain. With Curl and Collins, Washington expected it could disguise coverages better, with offenses not always knowing who might be breaking where -- whether in coverage or blitzing.

Rivera said they'd fill Collins' role by committee. Washington could opt to use more three-corner sets in nickel, or it could use a linebacker such as Khaleke Hudson or David Mayo in other spots where it wants more size.

McKissic serves as Washington's third-down back and has caught 43 passes for 397 yards and two touchdowns. He has also carried the ball 48 times for 212 yards and two scores. He is adept at picking up blitzes in protection.

Washington still has Antonio Gibson as its primary back, but McKissic offered a veteran backup when needed. Rookie Jaret Patterson, with 32 carries for 104 yards, also can back up Gibson.

Wendell Smallwood, who is on Washington's practice squad, will be signed to the active roster and serve as the third-down back. From 2016 to 2019, with Philadelphia and Washington, he caught 56 passes for 452 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball 233 times for 931 yards and five touchdowns.

Making matters potentially worse for Washington: Veteran left guard Ereck Flowers missed the past two days of practice with a foot injury. He's listed as questionable, though Rivera expressed confidence he'd be able to play. Veteran backup Wes Schweitzer, who would have started at center this week, is out because of an ankle injury.

Receiver Curtis Samuel (groin), center Tyler Larsen (knee) and tight end Ricky Seals-Jones (hip) all are listed as questionable. Samuel is expected to play, though he remains on a snap count.

Play calling has been bad and Carr won't throw the ball down the field for some reason today.  This does not look good so far.

It seems like some weeks they prepare for the wrong team. Like they read the schedule wrong or something. Its definitely weird and a sign of mediocrity.

If you can't stop Heineke, how can you expect to stop Mahomes and Herbert 2x a year? If this team doesn't get defense figured out, they won't go anywhere. You can't expect Carr to have a great game every week. Bottom line.

The defense had given up 7 points going into the fourth quarter.  I can't put this game on the D today.  In general they have been bad though so I agree with your post to some degree.

They just let him drive right down the field when it mattered most. All Moehrig had to do was catch the ball. They need more playmakers on D. A playmaker would have caught the ball!

I commented on this last week but I think Zay Jones has serious difficulty tracking anything over the shoulder. Bad angle on the missed TD and he overran the deep ball on the first play of the last drive. Hit him on the outside shoulder/helmet.

This is demoralizing

I know its beating and beating and beating a dead horse, but, aside from Jalen Reagor, if we have any 1 of the other 6 WRs drafted after Ruggs we're feeling alot better.

Still, no excuse for another c**p performance at home. 3 of last 4 at home and only win is on road. And for this we had 10 days to prepare of a huge win. Pathetic.

Don't forget Cle, Abram and the whole 2020 draft class. None of these guys are making an impact or even rostered. I realize no GM is 100% but man, that's too many misses, especially at the top of the drafts.

From ESPN:

What happened to that aggressive, take-no-prisoners approach Carr and the Raiders offense showed in Dallas on Thanksgiving? Indeed. Carr is, by nature, a patient quarterback, one that infuriates fans who recall his more swashbuckling days under Del Rio in 2016. But when he's not taking deep shots -- and firing high to open receivers -- in a game for the taking it stings. Simply put, he had to get comfortable against a defensive coordinator who knows him well and it took too long. Carr averaged 10.1 yards per attempt in the second half after averaging 4.5 yards per attempts in the first half. And the Raiders, with the lackluster 17-15 loss, are 6-6 and sliding in the AFC West. -- Gutierrez

This is the story of the last 4 Raider losses.  Carr refusing to throw the ball down the field in the first half of games.

Like many of us have been warning about for the last year, the poor drafting was bound to kill this team.

It’s time to look towards the offseason and the future.  Mayock needs to go and a new coaching staff is a must to begin the process of rebuilding the team.   The next couple of years are going to be ugly but at least we can put the Gruden chapter behind us.

I hate how every loss falls back on Carr. When will the defense step up and take a win? If Moehrig would have just caught the INT the game would have been over. Instead it's another night of Carr-bashing and not looking at the REAL issues of this team. Lack of playmakers on D (a playmaker catches that INT and seals the win IMO). Carr can't carry the whole team week in and week out, no QB can consistently. There has to be defense,  and important, must have defensive stops when it matters most, at the end of games.

This is true, but Carr's approach has also been very inconsistent and no team is going to win games scoring 16 or less in 4 of the past 5 games.  And in the first half of the last 4 losses they have scored 13-7-6-3 and gotten behind.  I don't view pointing this out as Carr bashing.

Carr isn’t great but his receiving weapons are below average.   The crummy o line doesn’t help Carr or the run game either.  It all goes back to Gruden and Mayock sending talent away and drafting horribly.  It doesn’t matter.  Carr is gone as part of the upcoming tear down and rebuild.

I think everyone needs to remember that beyond the loss of Carr and Ruggs the replacement coaches are just as weak as the replacement players. Olson & Bradley are still retreads who don't really have reputations for innovation and/or creativity.

Couple that with a receiving corps.that includes Hunter Renfrow and no one of consequence. They have a decent running back tandem without an offensive line that cannot consistently open holes for them (although they may be improving and they deserve credit for exceeding expectations in pass pro).

I don't see this roster as a three year rebuild project. The secondary absolutely has talent, the d-line is in place, the LB corps is where the void exists behind Perryman.

This team is a WR, a solid OL player, who may already be on the roster in Leatherwood and a legitimate OLB away from a good  coaching staff taking them to the playoffs consistently.

Heck they have been close to that level all season even with all the #### going on.

Brian Daboll???

Thinking about who the next coach will be is interesting.  I usually have a couple names that I would like, but there is no one that stands out that I definitely want right now.  I'd say the only name that comes up that I know I definitely do not want is Eric Bienemy.

You think Davis is going to let Mayock choose the HC?
No guarantee of course but he's not the hands on owner his father was. He turned over the keys to the entire organization to Gruden.

It's certainly possible he lets Mayock do his job.

But let's definitely consider the alternatives. Davis is not going to hobble, or fire, Mayock only to bring in a Bieniemy or Daboll or a subordinate front office guy to run the organization. He would eliminate Mayock from the process to make another big splash.

So, who fits the bill for that? There isn't another Gruden out there. Who are the big splash guys? I haven't done a deep dive but the one that jumps out to me is Sean Payton. To which I say YES! PLEASE GOD, YES!!!

Who else we got that fits the bill?

Daboll is an obvious candidate.

Leftwich deserves consideration but it's tough to gauge when he's coaching Tom Brady. Adam Gase & Mike McCoy rode Peyton's coattails to failed head coaching tenures.

Leslie Frazier?

Todd Bowles?

Josh McDaniels is an interesting option IMO.

Who else do we like?

I just hope the coming rebuild will begin and end with the defense, or at least the trenches on each side.  We have gone cycle after cycle of interchanging pieces here and there, signing lackadaisical FA's, and missing on draft picks, but never getting any of it right.  Missing on the recent 1sts and the whole 20 class is going to set us back further than we realize.  Attended my first game in 1976, but even the team of 2001 seems like ages ago..

Chiefs game tonight is a perfect example of the point I'm trying to get across. Mahomes and the offense are having an off night. But the difference between KC and LV is the defense is able to pick up the slack. The DB just had a pick 6. Whereas the Raiders DB had a game ending INT, possible pick 6 slip through his hands. That's difference between really good teams and mediocre to bad teams.

Another example: the Ravens last week, Jackson had 4 INTs and they still won the game thanks to defense and special teams.

The Raiders have not been able to have a respectable defense in 20 years, McKenzie missed the window with Mack, will they miss it with Crosby too?

If you can’t score in this league, you can’t win.
to me, the loss happened when they drove deep near the end of the game and couldn’t get a TD out of it and they settled for a field goal. I just looked back at their season results and, jeez, it truly is Jeckle and Hyde.
in our wins, we scored: 33,26,31,34,33,36

in our losses we scored: 14,9,16,14,13,15

Lack of consistency is killing the Raiders

This is why I expect Davis to replace Mayock and the coaching staff.  Mayock had to have some involvement with the horrible drafting and dumb moves in FA.   Building from the inside out is a must.  You can’t rebuild the o line with old and often injured players like Incognito and reach for a left tackle in the first round who may be an average guard.

I don’t see many pieces to build around when you look forward to a couple of years.  It’s time to move out any players of value that are 27 years or older.  Waller is 30 next year and should be traded sadly.  Jacobs is already hurt on a weekly basis and is probably going to be very unreliable in 2 years.
