2022-23 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the Heat did”, Miami fan says to giant pile of cocaine (14 Viewers)

This Heat culture thing is starting to get ridiculous. The Heat are very good at developing players, the culture got them Jimmy Butler, Dragic and a 35 year old, way past his prime Kyle Lowry.

D-Wade is to thank for Shaq and that 06 title.
D-Wade, the Miami weather and his friendship with LeBron and Bosh is to thank for the 4 year run in the early 2010's. If it was all culture LeBron wouldn't have jumped ship after 4 years.

Other big cultural factors are no state income tax and the most hookers per capita in all of North America.
Yeah. That too. Miami has had a lot of things break their way over the years and some really bad career threatening injuries to players at bad times as well. The ups and downs of a franchise I guess. It also doesn’t hurt that a lot of NBA guys call miami home in the off-season (and that the heat keep the arena open for guys who want to come in and hoop no matter the team).

Living down here is paradise. A congesTed, loud, and annoying paradise but still paradise. Same reason a lot of guys want to play on the west coast.

game one tonight. LFG HEAT!

There are several Miami-Denver connections. Demarius Thomas and Butler became good friends. Coach McDaniel was a big Nuggets fan growing up in the Denver area. And my brother lives just outside of Denver!

Denver in 5. They're playing great and a tough matchup for the Heat.

>>Jimmy Butler was in Denver this weekend cheering on his good friend Demaryius Thomas and the Broncos. It seems like he’s extended his stay. Butler is a free agent next summer.<<

>>I’ve become extremely invested, so I don’t lose any sleep by saying, you know what Denver Nuggets, why don’t we wait 48 years not 47.”<<

Riley always at least gets in the room.
This. Some players like the boat trip from the arena to Zo's house and some don't. Some players love the wine and dine, with Riley slappin' his ringzz on the table. Some guys like the structure of their weight being taken every week and constantly being held accountable like a college team and some don't. Overall, it's better than what ~25 other franchises do to win.

Living down here is paradise.
Aside from, you know, the people the area tends to bring in, the ever increasing threat to the coastline and big storms, and a shift to a non-sensical educational system. Outside of the NBA, "Heat Culture" doesn't really have a great rep.

You are forgetting your history here. Dragic at the time of the trade was not "just a guy" and 5 teams were on his tail.
I’m not forgetting anything. Dragic was a nice player but signing him was not some coup. He’s not that kind of player. Probably a slightly better version of somebody getting Fred Van Fleet this summer.

I have tickets for game one tonight with my dad who is a lifelong Nuggets fan. We are both out of town next week, so we would have been forced to sell our tickets if the Celtics had won. I am absolutely pumped for the game tonight.
Have a great time tonight, that's awesome and an experience you have been waiting a long time for.
I got to enjoy the World Series, Stanley Cup and Super Bowl (all Tampa teams) with my son in recent years, some of the best memories you can experience together.
Good Luck tonight but I will be hoping the Heat steal Game 1

Ehhh there’s a lot of freaks and weirdos here and the school system is in absolute shambles and every time you get on the road there is a chance you are going to get run over by a maniac in the biggest truck you’ve ever seen, but the beaches are nice.
I'll ride with you on a couple of these and since I don't have a small child in school, I'll just listen but from what I hear when other parents speak, that's your POV and to say anything else would only derail things in here.

-Driving has become nightmarish event around where I am but I'm assume it's a combo of me approaching 50 and the influx of folks from the North that can't seem to understand why we put in 25-35 mph signs all over town. You want to drive fast then hop on 95 or the TPike, I have to avoid at least one potential accident every time I leave the house and for whatever reason whenever workers are present, a school bus is 500 feet away, anything that people can show how little they know about driving and right of way. I love when Amazon trucks park in a neighborhood street creating just 1 lane to pass from both sides and people traveling the same way as the Amazon truck just fly into oncoming traffic without a care in the world, god forbid they tried to stop and wait their turn.

(Freaks and Weirdos)...have you been to a Walmart recently? Home Depot? The Mall?

He told them no once and they are trying again. It may not work, but I am very happy that they are trying.
it .... worked?

Amazing. If you make the a guy the highest paid coach in NBA history it tends to work. Lol

Game 1 is set up for Miami to steal
I don't think Miami has a great chance in this Series BUT...if they were going to make it interesting then they must steal the 1st one.
Denver has had a long vacation since the Western Conference Finals and teams traditionally do not well in Game 1 of the Finals after a prolonged time off.
The Golden State Warriors managed to win Game 1 of the Finals in 2016 after a lengthy time off, or maybe it was 2018 with Durant but they are the only team to do it after 8-9+ days off before the Finals.

-Miami did not fly home, they went straight to Denver, seemed like they were focused on what they needed to do to win Game 1.
-3 Days between Game 7 of thee ECF and the Finals should be enough for Miami to get rested. I don't think they should look fatigued tonight.
-They flew in directly from Boston to get acclimated with the air, not sure it's going to help.

If Denver comes out strong and wins the first couple games at home, this likely will only go 5 games in that scenario. Even if Miami steals game 1 and somehow comes back with a split 1-1, still could see them having issues at home trying to beat Denver. As a Miami fan I'm hoping for a 2-2 split going back to Denver for a best 2 out of 3 for the Title and see what happens. I doubt seriously that Miami can win the Series without it going to Game 7 and that would be bananas in Denver.

I heard a stat about that which I can't find right now... teams with more time off have a losing record over the last 20-something years in game one, but the higher seeded team in those situations is something like 8-1 with more time off, vs the lower seeded team being something like 2-10 with more time off. Turns out the better team with homecourt advantage wins most of the time.

I think if the Heat are going to steal one on the road it'll be game 2. I think Denver comes out laser focused and well rested tonight and rolls to an easy win. Then the Heat have to hope that makes the Nuggets relax a little too much and they do those weird Heat things and win game 2 also capella is the one who works at wendy's.

-They flew in directly from Boston to get acclimated with the air, not sure it's going to help.
This could be an issue given the age of MIA players. I think Bam is the only guy 25 or younger that gets playing time. Most are over 30. They are all in great condition, but still, there's a reason distance athletes train in high altitudes

As opposed to Tampa?

Freaks and weirdos are part of the appeal to be quite honest and it is a pretty awesome international city. My kids are out of school but managed to get a great public education. (Mind you this was before the book banning started down here). I am one of the Maniacs driving so to me it is comfortable, and yes the beaches are nice.

My wife photographed his family about 15 years or so ago when he was an assistant for Portland. She said he was one of the nicest guys she has ever encountered and was very patient during the photoshoot, which isn't something a lot of dads have patience for (myself being a prime example). My MIL is in town and she's pretty excited about the hire. Hope this works out.

These statements are complete fiction. Teams with 9+ days off are historically 5-3 in Game One of the NBA Finals. Denver has had 9 days off.

almost definitely through the '23-'24 all-star break

maybe

Caleb Martin is pretty young and a lot of the role players for Miami are young.
Tyler Herro is expected to return Game 3, he's also a young lad.

Tampa sucks too lmao. I hate this state but I have too many friends and family I love to leave.
I felt similar until I went on the road about 6-12 months into the pandemic, traveled thru some of the bigger cities along the way, happy to have a home in Florida for the foreseeable future.
I invite you to rent a Winnebago or camper and take to the road to all the places you feel are infinitely better locations with your family and drink it in, be in the moment in these better spots.
I'm not trying to put Florida on a pedestal, i'd love to have a 2nd home in a couple spots, I love the Smokies in the Western NC/Eastern Tennessee area.
I'd like more RE in the areas between where I am and say North Georgia/Western NC but I'm happy to have what i have right now.

And I understand about family and friends, most of mine have moved here in the last couple years
Can you not work remote? Mrs and I get to travel a lot, Miami pays us to be anywhere in the continental United States for weeks at a clip.
Still have to work but can be in Smokemont near the main gate of the Smokies for evening walks and morning strolls in between.
Maybe you just need an extended retreat, I think you would eventually miss things in Florida.

Go Heat!

So there's that
I lived in Los Angeles/Santa Monica the better part of a decade starting 2000, but yes I am originally from Florida.
Miami is chaotic and expensive, I get it.
Broward can be nutty in a lot of spots but once you get to that Palm Beach County line and head North all the way up the Treasure Coast, it's delightful.
And god forbid you like to boat, golf, play tennis and enjoy outdoor activities, Florida would be awful for any of that.
It's about lifestyle, you can have the same lifestyle in other parts of the country. New Mexico/Arizona, the Southwest is absolutely stunning.

Go Heat!

The real question I have is what everyone is drinking tonight?
I have an assortment of Hazy style IPAs and also a Drouble Dry Hop Pseudo Sue from Goliath, really like this beer.
Stone 7.4.23, Woven Water had 2 new IPAs, one was a West Coast so I grabbed a single of that to try.
Oh yeah, and Ever Haze for the Heat tonight, that's been a pretty lucky go to thru the Playoffs, see if the trend can continue tonight

Go Heat!

Lifetime Heat Homer. I have been a fan since their inception. And was a 30 year original season ticket holder with my dad. We gave up the tickets in 2017….he just lost the love for the NBA along with me. But man we had enjoyed so many amazing moments and memories with this organization.

The moment Pat Riley came aboard in 1995 everything changed.

The Heat on paper are not a “better” team than the Nuggets. I know that.

However…..with Coach Spo and Jimmy Butler….anything is possible in this series. Obviously they have to steal a game and to me I am with MOP….game 1 is the one to steal.

Heat in 7

Thanks...but it's Nuggets Culture to rely on primary research when presenting facts and not regurgitated regurgitation. YMMV

Good luck tonight. ;(

1st Playoff berth was against the Bulls, early Heat years were rough.
Then it was Hardaway/Zo and those epic 90s battles vs Knicks setting up the 2000s under Pat Riley both as Coach for the first title and then as President.

fingers crossed tonight

ESPN only went back 5 and they had 4 of the 5 losing, I mentioned it was the Warriors who won, you have 3 of the 5 losing, either way that's over 50% so there must be something to it.
2001 Lakers 2003 Nets 2019 Warriors, it's credible to ask if Denver will see any blip because of the lay off.
It's obvious you think it's a moot point and shouldn't even be discussed, got it

Still remember the Rockets almost traded Olajuwon for Seikaly and some other scrubs prior to their back to back championship run. Best trade never made.

is "Sacramento" too long of a word to say? what about "Kings"?

used to think it was only a thing John McLaughlin used to say, but now i hear every NBA player, media talking head, coach, etc. calling the team "Sac" and it's just.... not great.

Most likely outcomes in order.
Nuggets in 5, Nuggets in 6, Nuggets in 4, Nuggets in 7, Miami in 7.

The Nuggets are a fun team to watch when both Jokic and Murray on on. The beat down of the Lakers made me like them a little more.

I've got a growler with Koo'pa Trooper, it's a Pilsner from Tripping Animals

You give the Heat a fighting chance tonight? I'll understand if the answer is pretty much no
-Still almost 2 hours until tip off, trying to pace myself
-And there's the whiskey and bourbon in the bar

You might call them epic battles against the Knicks, but those were back alley bum fights.

My preferred brew from Ghost River is their Rocket '88 stout.

Don't know much about the Heat, but I'm kind of pulling for the Nuggets (as a Spurs fan, I'm partial to old ABA teams this late in the season). Love Jimmy Butler though and hope he averages 50 ppg.
