2022-23 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the Heat did”, Miami fan says to giant pile of cocaine (1 Viewer)

Oh Lakers. Up 102-97 with 1:52 left and the ball. Next 3 shots: Patrick Beverley well-covered no chance 3, Lebron well guarded step back fadeaway three, and Westbrook open 16 footer. And like that it's Blazers up 104-102 with 12 seconds left.
And the best part is that they ended up with 66 points in the paint. They were feasting in the paint—and that’s the shot collection the elected to finish the game with. The Lakers are doing a wonderful job beating themselves this year with their poor shot selection.

Most points in a half in NBA history:

107: Suns vs. Nuggets, 1990
I remember being in middle school for this and it’s all we talked about on the court the next day or whenever we all heard about it.

Obviously tv was different then but the few times the Nugs showed up on tbs or tnt were must-see. I couldn’t understand as a kid why they weren’t the best team in the league - they could score at will!

Argggghh nice win by Utah, but we made a 20-3 comeback run to get it to overtime, which had my son and I yelling in the living room. Olynyk and Markkanen were having their way for most of the game. Our offense wasn't clicking like usual. Brandon Ingram possibly concussed early on, early foul trouble (dumb calls IMO) for Zion and JV, and we still had a chance at the end. Zion looked a little more like a rookie today. Just out of place a few times on defense, etc. CJ stepped up big time once BI went out. Alvarado still a dog, he gets a roar from the crowd every time he makes a play and the place was rocking last night. It was hard to hear the TV announcers at times. Still an overall solid performance despite taking the L.

I wonder if Embiid's face injury really held him back over the summer. He had a good game, but the first two he looked terrible -- slow and lethargic in every way. Wasted good performances by Harden and Harris.

The only team in history that's shot worse from 3 with the volume the Lakers have had over three games (100+ 3PA) was the 2018 Atlanta Hawks who shot 21.0%. The Lakers are shooting 21.2% on 118 3PA.

Right. And obviously they'll aggress back to some reasonable mean. So, as much as I dislike the Lakers, there's been some bad "luck" to their start and they should rebound.

Some reasonable mean is probably still a really bad percentage in comparison to the rest of the league. They shouldn't be running an offense that results in almost 40 3PA per game. Problem is other teams know the Lakers are likely a historically bad outside shooting team and have already started packing in around the basket, so they'll probably still take way too many 3PA. You'd think a 2-3 zone shouldn't work for long stretches against an NBA team, but here we are.

any chance of sanctioning Lakers talk for this season?

it's absolute overkill for anyone who remotely pays attention to the NBA. i'm a casual fan by comparison to some of you but every time i tune in.. to NBA coverage in any format.. it's just endless beating a dead Lakers horse.

we get it. can this be a sanctuary of not beating every last cell from the dead Lakers horse, please? we get it. we got it. Westbrook is the worst NBA player ever. Lebron is the worst GM ever and maybe bottom 5 NBA player ever because they're 0-3. AD is hurt a lot. they might trade for Hield and Turner. they might be a play-in team.

It’s not an either/or thing but I’d rather talk about the Lakers than have a bunch of boomers tell me how Bill Laimbeer would shut down Lebron.

What I’m trying to say is we have a lot of terrible talk in here and it’s glorious.

fair point

while we're on the topic, i have no doubts that Bill Laimbeer would outshoot Russell Westsbrook and probably body slam him through the floor without getting a technical simply because the refs would support his actions.

every pundit's darkhorse, those Kings

i'd be interested to hear what you think of the team if you're a Kings fan

Me too.

My bet already looking pretty dumb...

Should we roll straight into Celtics talk then?

I've watched a total of like 15-20 minutes and read some articles and looked at a lot of stat sheets. Tatum seems to be good at basketball.

doc said over the weekend that Joel was dealing with plantar faciatis over the summer, which is supposedly not an issue now, but messed up his offseason work and conditioning.

Thanks Jayrod, this is a great example of the hard hitting, detailed insight you can only get in the FFA NBA thread. :D
There's more where that came from, GB. Stick around for when I have time to talk about what a good shooter that Steven Curry kid is and the superior passing skills of a couple Euro white boys.

All I hear is about how bad the Lakers are. I for one would like to counter that it's simply the fact that the Portland Trail Blazers are really good. No shame in losing to that team. They are undefeated.
The 2021-22 season doesn't matter much, but since mid-season last year to now, the Lakers are a combined 12-33. They didn't play the Trail Blazers every night. It's very possible Portland is a good team, and the Lakers aren't that great.

It’s unfortunate that the Thunder have been and will be in tank mode for Shai. That dude is one of the best players in the NBA—but has been spending much of his premium seasons playing in basketball purgatory.
He feels a lot older - he’s only 24. I don’t think the Thunder are going to actively tank this year like the last two. There is really no need to, they’ll lose plenty enough, and I don’t think they can be as bad as the bottom 3. Giddey, Dort, and SGA need to start learning how to win games together. That’s more worthwhile than 5-10 extra losses, particularly with the lottery odds smoothed out like they are now.
They will absolutely tank this season. The past couple of seasons—the Thunder have basically made up/exaggerated injuries to key players solely because the team was too competitive. Even if all of their guys played every game this season-I’m not saying they are playoff caliber—but they are a team that is pesky and will be in a position to win enough to where they wouldn’t have a high likelihood of the first pick. The Wolves are a really good team this year—and the Thunder effectively played them super tough for like 44-45 minutes. I don’t think it’s easy or healthy for a great player like Shai to waste 2-3 of his really good years for an organization that is losing by design.
I am a fan of the team and follow them closely, trust me I’m well aware of how the last couple years have gone. We will see how this year plays out. I expect SGA, Giddey, Dort, and Williams to play a ton all season.
So far your prediction doesn’t seem to be panning out. Shai and Giddey already ruled out for Tuesdays game and could go possibly past that. They have enough talent to not be a bottom 3 team—but if they bench that talent with fake injuries—they are playing to be bottom 3.

Where are all the 76er fans?
I posted this morning!

Apparently Embiid had a plantar fasciitis issue that prevented him from doing much physical work for the two months prior to camp. And it shows.
I could see that. As long as the plantar fasciitis doesn’t pop up again and embiid can stay healthy from other ailments—I think we should see his play improving as the season progresses. As bad as the 76ers have started the season—I think they are a scary team. Harden looks in great shape and looks motivated. He’ll probably dominate the ball until Embiid is fully back and healthy—but I do think that if this team can figure out an optimal chemistry once it’s fully healthy—-they are a scary team. A healthy Embiid, a healthy and motivated Harden, an upcoming star in Maxey, the sometimes boring but generally solid Harris, the defense of Thybulle..etc. If this team is still struggling in 2-3 weeks where their NBA future bets become more appealing—I might have to roll the dice on them.

Ha - I actually thought of you/this thread earlier today. Not to turn this into r/Thunder, but these are not fake injuries. Williams has an orbital bone fracture, dude almost got his eye poked out in his first game. We’ll cut him some slack for missing time.

I know outside looking in it doesn’t seem like it, but SGA is legit injury-prone. In 2020-2021 he had plantar fasciitis (it’s not just for fat guys GM) and missed Olympic qualifying in addition to all the NBA games. Pretty sure Canada isn’t tanking their Olympic qualifiers. That’s not an injury you play through, the only cure is rest. So that’s what they did.

Last year SGA played 56 games. They only truly shut him down for the last 10. Right now he’s coming off a grade 2 mcl sprain and whatever the hell this hip thing is. Given the circumstances - why rush him back? That is way different than fake injuries.

Did you watch the Minnesota game? Giddey rolled his ankle pretty bad, tried to play through it but was clearly hobbled. It would be idiotic to play him tomorrow night on what is clearly a sprained ankle.

As bad as the Thunder have been - they would have to lose every single game this year to equal Philly’s worst stretch during the process years. The idea that this is unprecedented tanking is wrong. I stand by my statement - I expect SGA, Giddey, Dort, and Williams to play a ton this year.

The most egregious thing the Thunder did during this run is tell Al Horford thanks but no thanks, you can stay home. The SGA stuff is an abundance of caution at worst.

You mention Thybulle, but he hasn’t logged more than 3 minutes yet. They should use him more.
