Forever and ever and ever I've been a 3-QB guy and maybe this ends up being a massive regret but the way the QBs are priced in the contest made it way too tempting to not take Allen. Did occasionally get cold feet and look at 3-QB combos (and like many of you yeah I liked Carr and Cousins - I actually was very close to going with 3 cheapies with a combo of Lawrence and Goff and Daniel Jones. But I just couldn't do it. It was tough as a Bengals fan not to take Joey B - if I had a 2nd entry I'd probably just throw all my $ on my Bengals. Goff feels like value here - he has a solid offensive line with a ton of weapons.

As usual RB is a tough place to find value. I really like Mixon this year - I think he may ultimately be the biggest beneficiary of the massive upgrades the Bengals made to their offensive line in the offseason. He's got my home dollars. Barkley obviously is a nervy pick - but they are going to use him a ton and ya gotta take big swings in this contest. He has the best prospect of the top-tier guys to score way above his cost. Pierce - he's gonna be on every rooster and mine too. Houston is terrible but they are going to base their offense around the young stud and a clear #1 RB at that price. White looks like he has a path to carries in a committee already and given the regime change he seems like a nice cheap option here with upside. Wilson was one of the last 2 guys on my team and I'm sorta surprised to see him there. He took the place of another late add from SF (Davis-Price) but the latter has had a pretty rough camp it sounds like. I don't trust SF at all but Wilson seems like he's more in the mix. Dicey bye-week work here (2 RBs off week 6 and 2 RBs off week 9) but I took care with other byes to hopefully compensate for that.

Was at 8 WR for a long time but at less budget - decided that might not be the best idea. This is a group where I went stochastic - a bunch of guys who hopefully will get their share over the season - they aren't exactly sure things but hopefully they all are in line for opportunity. I've got a sinking feeling even typing this but it is what it is. I like Sutton with a real QB. Brown will have a great opporunity to get established with the suspension of Hopkins. I settled on JuJu as much for bye diversity as anything - not carry a lot of $ on week 8 and he should have his weeks with KC. Pickens is maybe a guy I've gotten to talk myself into - Steelers looking like a team trying to win 16-13 rather than 38-35 but the reviews have been great and the chances should be there at that price. Berrios was the last guy I added using the extra $1 I got from the Davis-Price switch to WIlson, he takes the place of Nelson Agholor. At that price range I'm taking shots really - maybe he gets lost in the shuffle or maybe his time with Wilson from previous years gets him look. Shenault is just a matter of the Panthers not really having much in the way in the receiving room. At $3 all you really want is a guy that gets a chance and given the modest investment the Panthers made to get him and his draft pedigree maybe he surprises.

The TE part of my rooster was a journey. Hurst at $8 has been the guy I stubbornly held onto throughout and for the longest time I felt like I had settled on a group of Ertz/Knox/Hurst and Otton. Then I turned around and went extra heavy with Pitts and Goedert - ballooning the budget at the position to $50. Ultimately that seemed a bit too high. Decided Pitts being the cheapest of the triumvirate of 3 true studs at the position was the guy to keep and dialed it back to Higbee who seems to have a lot of good ink. Otton is the dart throw but if Gronk stays retired this is a guy who could start to gobble up targets as the season goes along and Brady gets a chance to get more comfortable with him - worth a shot at $3.

I am a 3 PK guy and almost universally I have a budget of either $10 at the position or $9. Usually I put $10 or $11 at defense and usually one of those defenses is the Bengals. But looking at my guy Money Mac and how much confidence the coaching staff as in him (rightly so) and given the scoring system for the contest I switched it up and put a couple extra $ into the kicker side instead of the defense side. Looking at the $3 kickers and the bye weeks at hand Blankenship was a pretty easy pick (I expect a million teams to have him) and opted for Seibert over Fairbairn given that the Lions should be able to move the ball a bit better.

Went through the paces looking at all of the $3 defenses and ONLY the $3 defenses once I decided to go with Money Mac. These 3 really seem to be the best of the crop - pretty surprised to see 11 defenses listed at the minimum price and I suppose it will diversify the choices a bit but given the spread in byes this was pretty much set in stone once I settled on them.

After being locked on Carr/Cousins for the longest time, I decided the additional $5 for this combo was worth it to get Allen's much higher weekly ceiling. In theory could save $2 and have Trubisky who looks likely to hold the role at least a half season if not longer after being named a captain, but Mills had a couple 3 TD games last year which suggests higher upside to me.

On the one hand, he definitely seems like given opportunity he could have a high ceiling, but on other hand when healthy I think Mostert is the better back and even their RBs 3 and 4 (Gaskin and Ahmed) have had their moments... so the committee concern here is very high. In the current iteration, I decided to go for it... in other iterations I've had Christian Kirk instead (and obviously a few other pieces to shuffle around for the $2 delta).

Appreciate it, but 99.9% gonna be invalid. I've already made changes even from my midnight roster. I like Herbert, but after adding Chase Edmonds felt I didn't need to spend $9 on a guy who will probably only have big-game contributions if there's an injury... a number of guys in similar situations can be had cheaper (e.g. Eno Benjamin, Chris Evans, Hassan Hankins, etc.)... and I'm not really interested in his frequent 5-10 point weekly contributions if an RBBC continues as expected.

Extended Commentary

QB Pool Overview

With Josh Allen at $25, there’s little justification to spend $21-$23 unless you think one of QB2-QB6 will outscore him. I flirted with Joe Burrow at $21.

In the range $17-$19, you have mobile QBs who can provide the combination of rushing floor and passing upside. I’m investing in Jalen Hurts for this reason, but not without reservation.

$13-16 includes the two most likely popular QBs in Cousins and Carr. The value screams at everybody…I’m just not convinced that either can crack top 3. I’m also not convinced that the two might be outperformed by (a) Aaron Rodgers, or (b) some cheaper option like Trevor Lawrence or Jameis Winston.

Of the remaining QBs likely to approach 16-17 games played, I like Mills, Ryan, Tannehill, Mayfield and Mac Jones in roughly that order. Mills is my QB2.

Below that, Mariota, Brissett and Kenny Pickett with or without Trubisky are interesting to me. Pickett is my QB3. If this is a mistake, its because my QB1 bye is week 7 and my QB2 bye is week 6 and it will take X weeks for Pickett to take over. Brissett would be a lower risk choice but whatever.

RB Pool Overview

The easiest way to summarize without figures, tables, etc. is to say there are very clear tiers that split after top 2, top 4, top 6, top 9, top 13, top 16 and top 20. Within the top 20, the names that sing to me are Taylor, Henry, Cook, Chubb, Fournette, J Williams, J Dobbins. The names that don’t are Mcaffrey, Eckler, Mixon, Harris, Swift, Kamara, Barkley, Jones, Connor, Elliot.

While I landed on Cook, Fournette and Dobbins as my top 3 roster RBs, I spent a lot of time thinking Derrick Henry and/or Chubb would be on my roster. I suspect RB1 will either be Taylor or Henry at the end of the year…yet I have neither. Floor and bye week were/are apparently more important to me.

Most of San Fran’s running attack is available through Mitchell ($18) plus Wilson ($3) and I’m buying. There are questions here with Trey Lance and Deebo, etc etc but the running game is foundational to San Fran’s attack. The same can be said of NEP and Harris/Stevenson but the split distribution is guesswork. I also like / heavily considered Pierce in Houston and Rashad Penny in Seattle, with some additional thoughts about Edmonds vs Mosfert in MIA, as well as Michael Carter in JY, Williams in ATL and Byron Scott in PHI.

Kupp, Chase and Jefferson are their own pool ($35+, 325-350 points). I prioritized my RB budget and other squad needs over a willingness to invest $35+ here.

This year was strange in that it was difficult to get excited about any player between $20 and $28 at their projected value. I experimented with Godwin, Gabe Davis and Mike Williams as my WR1, and in the end settled on Mike Williams.

I also had limited interest in the large number of options available in the $12-$19 range, and focused on Davis, Jeudy, Renfrow, Lockett, D Smith, Lazard, Boyd, and D Hopkins (PED suspension W1-W6). Notable players in this range that should interest me but don’t (it’s a long list) include Metcalf, Thielen and JuJu among others.

In the bottom of the pool ($10 and under) I considered Obsorn, Parker, Pickens, Robinson, Landry, McKenzie, Jefferson, Palmer, PeoplesJones, Julio Jones, Nick WestbrookInkines, Watkins, Agholor.

There are two names that are irritatingly not on my roster: S Schultz and Albert O. I think I might prefer Schultz over Kittle this year and think Albert is undervalued, but I couldn’t make these roster picks fit with the rest of what I was trying to do. In theory I could replace Kittle with Schultz but I can’t make myself pull that trigger.

This year I prefer the $15-$18 TEs as an investment over the higher priced $21-$30 studs.

Similarly, this year, I prefer the bargain bin TEs over the $8-14 TEs, considering specific situations.

Didn't want to have my fake $448 roster be my most current team, so here is one I just came up with. It's at least a legal roster.

QB - Kirk Cousins - MIN/7 - $14
QB - Derek Carr - LV/6 - $13
I still think Derek Carr is going to be the best QB value of the contest. And Cousins is going to be a close 2nd. I toyed with adding Pickett ($3), but then I thought, if I'm so confident in the Cousins/Carr duo, isn't adding an insurance policy like betting against myself?

Sorry. The minute I posted it at the last second I changed it. I'm addicted I tell ya.

The way I see it the real fun and joy of this contest is the constant tinkering and different combinations and ways to get to a hopefully competitive rooster. Why would I cut that fun short by two days? I knew I wasn't go to keep the same lineup for another two minutes, let alone two days, so I deleted it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got several dozen more roosters I'd like to try before my 10:00 a.m. FBGSCA (FBG Subscriber Contest Anonymous) meeting

A few things....
- thanks for the kind words.
- you should consider the lack of intersection a good thing as I'm a contrarian investor with a bad contest track record
- I like your QB1 and your TE1 picks
- nothing that you have done in your roster is sketchy...you just have a bunch of expensive players I don't think much of (again, that's not necessarily a bad thing )
