2022 Philadelphia Eagles - Leave Gannon in Arizona and let’s run through the NFC again in 2023. (5 Viewers)

https://www.phillyvoice.com/10-reasons-eagles-will-be-dumpster-fire-season-2022/

Links to the other NFC East teams in the above link.  I always look forward to these every year .
Those first two are right on.  I mean I hope Hurts improves. He'll have another full offseason in the same offense, so it's possible. Sadly I don't think it's likely. I'd put it at around 70% chance we need a new QB next year.  On the good side though, we'll have plenty of ammo and a better WR corps to entice a QB.

And the defense... I'm still surprised Gannon got HC love. I saw nothing to indicate his defense would be a success.

Their predictions all at least have some serious thought put into it, I'll give them that.  Every year at least they are consistently biased against each team.  I reread them several times throughout the year to gauge their accuracy.

PFF ranks us as the #4 receiving corps in the league.  Is this the best group of receivers we've ever had?
We've got AJ Brown who has a career high receiving yard in a season of 1,075, paired with Devonte Smith, who had 916 yds. Goedert had 830. So - we're looking at ~2850 yds  for our top 3 receiving weapons.

The  Maclin/Matthews/Ertz combo in 2014 had better numbers, so they aren't even the best we've had in a decade. Potential to be the best? Sure. Not there yet. We'll see how it pans out.

I don't think receiving yards is the measuring stick here. Hurts could be awful and the numbers low and that wouldn't be a representation of how talented the receivers are at all.

I was just asking "best" and curious if other fans thought this was the best receiver corps we've ever had. Maybe from a talent standpoint.

Your bolded phrase above seems like a slam dunk pointing to the current  WR group.  A Heisman Trophy award winner(coupled with his production last year in a limited passing offense) and  AJB's track record seem like a no brainer, IMO>

No I get it's not the end all.  Kinda just saying these guys have never really done much to indicate that their talent is better then other combos we've had.
I'd probably put them top 3 right now tho (and I dont really count college production - that's more 'potential' NFL talent imo)

Ya I just think aj brown is a better receiver than maclin, Smith is way better than Matthews. Ertz gets the edge over goedert. Just can't think of a better corps we've had ever. Maybe in the 60s

The message was that the receivers from the 60s had a better QB throwing the ball, so today's WRs for the Eagles may suffer because of Hurts.
Well we haven't seen aj brown with hurts so that's irrelevant with him and Smith did great with him last year. But ya I agree this is the most talented receivers the Eagles have ever had.

This is a fair point and one I've made for real life as well as for people wanting to draft any of our WRs in fantasy. In fantasy if you want one of the WRs because I think these guys are build for '23. You check in with the owner see if he just isn't a Hurts fan and you might get the guy on the cheap even before the season. This is one of those situations you hope an impatient owner has one of the top Eagles WR's and sells on the low.

Anyone watching the USFL Championship tonight at 7:30 EST on Fox?
https://www.theusfl.com/the-usfl/usfl-championship-game-keys-for-stallions-stars
I did really fun match up and I think if Cookus didn't get hurt we're talking Philly Stars as the USFL champs. Fun team and their defense led the league in Takaways. Cookus was a fun player to watch and kind of reminded me of the Old Carson Wentz when he first came here.

I don't know what USFL contracts are like but there's a few players on both squads from that match up I wouldn't mind bringing in for a look.

It was only during early OTAs, but rumblings about Hurts' performance already surfacing.

I heard a few things about this. It also wasn't just one practice either it was poor all around. I'll go back to what I already said already but there's a reason the Eagles stockpiled picks for a loaded '23 QB class. They don't see Hurts as the future guy. If they felt comfortable already they'd have replaced him. However Lurie, Roseman and the staff love his intangibles, personality and is a good teammate and person they felt he was good enough they can take another year with him then replace him with much better options to choose from after this season. He's also on a rookie deal too.

At the same time people shouldn't fall head over heels over reports in controlled eviroments. D Gunn is very plugged in though and was just reporting stuff he heard to someone on the podcast who asked. A lot of people on both sides will take what he said completely out of context to fit their agendas. Some guys are just terrible practice players and better in an in game environment. For example Cam Newton is an atrocious practice QB. He's good on Game days but I think people for yrs overrated how good he really was. Point is some players just don't practice well period. This early into an offseason or training camp people should make hash decisions on their opinions

I hope AJ doesn't become TO 2.0!

AJ is just defending a friend and teammate. Id expect anyone to do this. He's right on people believe anything written on Twitter however he's barking up the wrong tree here. D Gunn is one of the most plugged into the team reporters out there and highly respected by many of the players who have been there for awhile including BG and Kelce.

eh, we all know this season is make or break for Hurts. Not in practice, but in games. Teams are gonna clamp down on the running and force the ball in the air. Getting worked up before training camp even starts is silly. Who knows what hes working on, what the play is supposed to be or what the coaches are saying. It's going to be obvious when games start if he's got it or not - 2nd year in the system, 3rd in the league - this will tell the story. If he's not then yea, we'll have to move on. But could care less about reports now. I mean - if I recall Carson Wentz had a GREAT showing in OTA's and training camp before 2020. Then the season started, and that lasted all of one half.

I'm old enough to remember Sam Bradford's perfect preseason game against the Packers and thinking Super Bowl. Let's wait for the season to start before burying the kid.

And remember how rookie Mariota went weeks in training camp without throwing an interception.

I know we all hate reagor and he deserves it but harry from the Patriots was even more of a bust.   Caught 12 passes.  Yuck

Way to go bill

Patriots have never really developed receivers though. For the exception of Gronk and Hernandez their best WRs they've had over the years are from FA or trades like Welker. Also I believe Harry was hurt and missed some time his rookie year where Reagor I don't think has missed a game yet. I think he also was put in Bill's doghouse and there's been murmurs of Harry wanting a trade out for awhile. NE is a weird team. If you aren't drinking the Cult like kool aid up there it doesn't seem like you'll have much success.

Despite all that I'd rather have Harry over Reagor and I wonder if NE would've been interested in a straight swap of players and teams swapping a picks. Both need change of scenery at this point.

Check out who is standing next to AJ Brown when he is being drafted by the Titans...
https://youtu.be/pd-x6qo9g7k?t=670

No surprise they became friends when Hurts was being recruited and AJ was at Ole Miss. They stayed friends after Jalen ended up at Alabama. Hurts isn't the only reason AJ is in Philly. He apparently thought the Eagles would draft him in '19 we took Dillard. He had a really good meeting with Sirianni when he met with the Colts too. AJ's problem was he had medical red flag with availability issues in college or he'd been a 1st rounder.

So I met with one of my sources for Lunch prior to work today. This seems like our yearly thing now. We talked a lot of football and Eagles as usual

On Hurts QBS:

We've all been through this already. Team, Staff, Players love him and he's cheap. However the team doesn't believe he's the guy and the playoff game kind of solidified where the issues they have with him. Similar case as before if there were better QB options for the team this past offseason we'd have a New starting QB. With that said Howie and staff are preparing to get someone in the 23 draft. Too soon for him to say who the target is. They love Minshew and he understands his position on the team. He's very competitive. Carson Strong they were surprised went Undrafted but teams have concerns about his knees. If he was healthy he'd have been a 1st rounder. He thinks he can be a starter in this league but it probably won't be with the Eagles. He'll probably be a developmental QB where they trade at some point. Read Stinnet was here on the PS and QB 3 for bit. Right now he's more of a camp arm.

Minshew/Dillard Trades:

Eagles like their depth and love having a back up QB who can start when needed. Minshew trade talk is just rumors stirred up by media looking for a hit. Dillard as well in terms of depth the Eagles love their Offensive Line Depth as well as DL depth. If someone is traded it might be Semulo. If Dillard was traded they'd want a high end pick considering he could start. He'd be starting right now if Jordan Maliata hadn't burst onto the scene.

Miles Sanders:

Team won't go overboard on trying to resign him. If they can't resign him and are in a position where they aren't making the playoffs this year wouldn't be surprised if Howie tries to trade him for a playoff needy team needing a rental back for the stretch run and get a pick back. However resigning him to a team friendly deal or letting him walk for a compensation could happen too. Eagles like their RB depth but depending what happens with Kenny G could determine a lot

AJ Brown Calvin Ridley and WR upgrades

Brown wasn't their initial target. Calvin Ridley was the guy Howie wanted and would've had if Ridley wasn't suspended. The Eagles have privately and have told other teams in meetings how nice ATL was and how honest they were with the Eagles in trade talks. Eagles and ATL almost had a deal done and had conversations during WK 1 last year when the Eagles were there which set up foundation work on the trade. ATL found out prior to the Deadline about Ridley's issues and leaving the team etc.   With the Ridley trade in shambles the Eagles had to go else where. FA they did talk to Allen Robinson and others but money wasn't working. They then went to AJ Brown who they knew was having issues with a contract in Teen. They had met with him and all at the draft in 19. This is a great example of a team having notes made from a draft and putting data into their system. if they don't draft the player they have info if a possible chance to acquire said player later occurs. Hurts was fundamental but I'm told even without Hurts AJ wanted to be here. Paschal was a guy Sirianni loved in Indy and he will slot right in at the Slot. Reagors days are numbered considered he can't play Special Teams and hasn't been productive in the pros. Ward could be cut after camp possible put on the PS as a Vet with the newer practice rules. Covey and Allen will have legit chances to make the team. Smith is progressing well year two already

Cam Jurgens and OL:

Kelce is here for at least this year. I've yet to really hear from anyone if this is it or not. Talking to his FIL over the last 2 yrs it doesn't even seem his family really knows other then his wife what he plans and I believe he doesn't really have a set time either. On the Kelce Front the Eagles did extensive research with Kelce to find a replacement. Everyone in the media thought Tyler Linderbaum was the guy but the Eagles looked at him, however Kelce fell in love with Jurgen. Jurgen personality fits in exactly to Kelce's and it sounds like he could be a fan favorite after awhile. The Line is one of the teams strengths and with continuity and hopefully injury free season could be better.

TE:

Dallas Goadert is just Mr consistency and they expect a big year. They like Jack Stohl for his blocking but Grant Calcaterra should become TE2. Eagles are hoping if GC develops he combines for a good 1-2 TE punch. Tyree Jackson still has a place but if he keeps getting injured there may not be hope. Besides JJAW most of the others are just bodies. The coaches love JJAW's effort and commend him for changing positions. With Tyree going on PUP and out first few weeks of the season Eagles need a 3rd TE If Rodgers isn't kept and JJAW makes strides he could be TE3.

DL:

Another Streangth of the team. Team is excited to have BG back. Barnett was simple brought back do to the $$$ others in FA were commanding. Tarron Jackson and Josh Sweat will be in the rotation. They loved what Hargreaves brought to the team last year. Very happy to bring Cox back. Was told the coaches were doing backflips when they realized they could draft Jordan Davis. Dude has a very LARGE Personality and just excited for play. if he develops a good pass rush the Eagles have one of the other steals of the draft. UDFA Noah Ellis who is similar size is also liked. If he could make the team look for them to have packages of Davis and Ellis for run situations. If those two develop Eagles could have a serious monster line stuffing the runs for yrs. The team still like Milton Williams who is more a pass rusher inside as well.

LB:

He started with a "Tell Giovanni he got his LB's" which I thought was funny. Hassan Reddick was their top FA target PERIOD. He was the first guy on their list. Reddick not only comes home but major upgrade to the pass rush and LB overall. Reddick is excited to be back home too. Kyzir White is a guy the team and Gannon thought was very underrated player. Gannon wants more of an athletic defense who can fly around at the LB and DB spots. White is also really good in Coverage. TJ Edwards has a spot and he's a terrific Run Defender. The Team was stoked to get Nakobe Dean in the 3rd round. 1st round talent that apparently some false medicals made him drop. Eagles gain and could very well become one of if not the biggest draft day steals in this draft and Eagles history. Dean is that talented and is already becoming a leader out there. Kyron and Patrick Johnson could have packages similar to those odd 3-3-5 fronts they were using at times. The team was really upset with how Davion Taylor's season ended. He made so much progress last year and had an oppurtunity for a lot of snaps when he got hurt.

CBs/S:

The team loves Slay and Maddox as the #1 and 3 guys. They needed a number 2 and they found that in Bradberry. NYG rebuilding and cap situation taken advantage by a rival team. McPherson could see time on the slot and Maddox moved around even going to Safety at times but that depends on game situations and match ups. They want to get McPherson on the field. McGowan brought in with the Ertz deal is a solid guy they like who can play the outside if needed. The team does need to find some foundation to be a future #1 as Slay isn't a spring chicken. Jarquiski Tartt was a guy I heard a few people say was a perfect fit for Gannon's defense months ago. He's an aggressive guy and plays to the whistle and then some. Doesn't give up on a play. Blue Collar guy. Eagles are really happy with another year of Harris. His situation was more of a money plus already knew the system. McLeod could've been resigned but both parties apparently decided to mutually part ways. They are really excited to see what strides Marcus Epps gives them this year. That isn't talk its real. Wallace and Mayden could see time as well.

As for special teams

they really need to find some kick and punt returners. Gainwell is decent on KR but they really need someone who can be consistent. I think they like Devonte at PR but don't want to risk an injury to him. He could see PR duties depending on situations like late game when the team needs a big return etc. Elliot and Siposs and Lovato are all here as well.

Overall look for the team to be a bit more innovative on Offense and the Defense to get more schematic. It won't be the Eagles play a 4-3 Cover 2 or a 3-4 etc. Its going to be a multiple scheme hybrid defense with different fronts. He could see them making the playoffs and winning the East but WC exit again but could see them #### the bed completely too. Everything depends on how Hurts does as usual. He says the team can be a playoff contender but the questions of Hurts is what holds people back the most.

@The Noidnot an Eagles question but general stadium question with seating. I'm planning to seeing German Alternative Heavy Metal band Rammstein at The Linc end of Aug for the first time. They put on a very good stage show similar to Trans Siberian Orchestra so it's best to not sit up close. They have a lot more pyro then TSO with Fire, light show etc. There's an M and C seating level in the Middle of the stadium. I think I sat there for the Eagles Sea game where we all lost track of the Turnovers for the game but can't remember. DO you think that is a good spot for the show? Anywhere you'd suggest sitting possible closer and can see more of a show? I don't want the side stage view because of the stage show they put on. If it wasn't for the stage show I'd just grab side seats like I've done in the past or paid for cheaper field level tickets.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Looks like they are setting up The Linc in the usual concert configuration for Rammstein, so yeah, M9 - M13 would be your best bet if you're trying to avoid a side stage view.

M9 - M13 are essentially Club Level (but without access to the Club lounges) and high enough up to have good/direct eyeline to the stage but not too high where you would be looking down (like the 200 level). Sections 110/111, from about row 12 and up would also be good.

Thanks I figured you know the stadium lay out better. So M9-13 and 11O-111 from 12 Rows is the best then? I'll let my buddy know and see what we can find in those sections. Honestly if it was a regular show I wouldn't care where I sit but this is a little more then usual and tickets are fairly cheap compared what I thought they'd be right now

would not be surprised if they make a switch in any game if we are down late and need to pass to win

jalen really needs to be strong right out of the gate if he wants to keep the job imo
Eh, I'd be surprised in the first half of the season. I think they'll give him every chance to work through it. If we're in the second half of the season, and he still can't pass effectively? They'll know they're moving on then and will (hopefully) just do whatever to win.

In retrospect, what was the deal with Asomugha after the Raiders? Never was as good as his rep? Hidden injury, or something that he never fully recovered from? A loss of 'love for the game', or 'fire' or whatever?

He earned a reputation of a being a great corner so teams didn't throw his way that much. So he was never challenged. Then this was around the time QBs got more ballsy and said Screw it I'm throwing to these top Corners. Film also helped and teams saw a weakness. I think Asomugha was a credit to the team around him and not because of his skill set. Today that contract looks like peanuts though compared to what guys get now.

I think 2nd half of the year and if they are challenging for the playoffs they make the move if he isn't effective. If we aren't a playoff team I think they just let him play it out unless it gets to the point they just aren't competitive with him at QB then Minshew would come in. Either way I say 2nd half of the season the move happens.

from what i recall, the rap at the time was that he was brought in to play a totally different scheme and it really didn't fit his skill set.  also supposedly a bit of introvert and maybe never could quite get comfortable with the new team.

was just looking at vegas lines for division and sb winners and philly is no value play at all! i should be happy, i know. Dallas still the fav to win NFCE but we're close second.
