Does anyone here plan to watch the Spurs vs Lakers tonight (7:00 pm CST, ESPN)? This guy does. I'll have my eyes on Domanick Barlow - a 6'9" center who just turned twenty in May and his game showed a lot of growth in Monday's game against Charlotte (to be fair, Charlotte was very unimpressive) where he displayed a grown man's mid--range shot. Looks like a guy who will get some PT with the varsity squad this year.

Other players to watch:

Blake Wesley (last years 25th overall). He struggled against Charlotte, repeatedly driving to the hoop with nary a plan.

Malaki Branham (last year's 20th overall). He sat out the game against Charlotte while Julian Champaignie racked up 30 points (5-12 from 3), 8 boards, 2 assists, 4 steals, and 0 turnovers. Champaignie got paid last week (4 yr/$12M), so he probably takes the night off to allow for deeper evaluations of others, like Branham.

Charles Bediako (undrafted 7'0" center out of Alabama). Looks like an interesting project.

i'll probably tune in just because it's sports but i've always found it difficult to really glean anything meaningful from these games

Someone please outline a potential trade that makes sense for Portland that gets Dame to Miami. The Heat have said the entire roster is available except for Butler and Bam, which essentially leaves Herro, Robinson, Lowry, and picks to choose from. Brooklyn has been mentioned as a third-party facilitator, but they want someone to take Simmons off their hands for them to get involved. Portland doesn't seem interested in the main Heat players being offered. I guess maybe they might think about Nurkić or Jaquez , but the main salary matchers from the Heat seem to be non starters. I just don't see the Blazers giving up Lilliard for Simmons, Duncan Robinson, and a few picks. It seems like any trade proposals that people come up with leave all the good core players on a team, and those teams giving up so-so starters and bench players for Dame to move somewhere, which doesn't make much sense for Portland.

There's a lot of problems facing Portland right now and I've touched on them before:

Problem 1: Rudderless ownership and leadership. The team went from a passionate, caring owner with DEEP pockets to a faceless ownership group that doesn't care, knows it will have to sell at some point, but isn't motivated to sell right now. Greatest comp? Rachel Phelps from Major League.
Problem 2: An inexperienced GM who isn't an alpha and isn't seasoned enough to deal with the likes of NBA royalty like Pat Riley or NBA cache of a Sam Presti. I mean, how many of you even know who the Portland GM is without looking? If you are familiar with him, what's your take on the job he's done? Because his reputation here is lousy.
Problem 3: Dame's contract is an albatross. Moving him is going to be unsightly because it'll mean taking on bloated contracts of aging players who aren't ever going to suit up for Portland. So the return on Dame isn't going to be palpable. Good young players aren't coming back this direction in a trade. Just the way it's going to be.

Glad we ditched our season tickets when we did. This team is going to suck for years. But, hey......"SCOOT!"

Miami/Lillard need the hot chick treatment in order to get what they want.

Miami has garbage to offer Portland so I don't see Lillard ending up in Miami.

I understand but that's where he wants to go. It's a player driven league. I see a three or even four team deal to get him there, but the return Portland gets is going to cause indigestion. When you promote a feckless GM with no prior experience and tell him to go play in the big boy sandbox, it's not going to be pretty when he returns.

That's the part I don't really understand. If you are going to consummate a trade that gets you back 30 cents on the dollar and makes your team significantly worse, then why trade Dame at all. What's he going to do, refuse to play and forfeit his $45M+ salary? He doesn't strike me as the type that would either refuse to play or play at 50%. The Blazers don't have to trade him to Miami (or anywhere for that matter). I think they will get back more than you think they will (or they won't trade him if the only offers are garbage).

The win-now teams are blowing off how bad those final Lillard years are going to be when he is in steep decline. I’d take Herro, offsetting contracts, available firsts and swaps if that is the best they can get. Gotta move on.

That might be true you still have to try to get more. It is extremely early in the process and the Blazers have time.

What am I missing? BOS has been hoarding second round picks this off-season. Are second rounders suddenly valuable commodities?
No, very little value. I could be wrong but I think this creates a traded player exception for Boston. (Assuming also that Dallas uses their traded player exception they got in the Bertans trade for this.)

I still don't get this. They keep comparing it to soccer but it is missing all the key ingredients that make it work in soccer around the world.

=============================

The Final Four of the NBA's new in-season tournament will take place on Dec. 7 and 9 in Las Vegas, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday.

All teams will participate in the group stage, which will consist of six groups total -- three per conference -- and chosen by a random draw based on teams' winning percentage the previous season. Each team will play four games in its group, with the six group winners making the knockout stage, along with two wild cards who finished with the best winning percentage and not first in their groups.

Knockout-stage games will be single elimination through the final.

Silver has pushed for the past several years for the in-season event to be added, and he has often compared the notion of an in-season tournament to what is commonly seen in European soccer.

hard to say with 2nd round picks. this is the first year i can think of where teams weren't literally selling 2nd round picks for money. if they can get a pick in the top 5 or so of the 2nd it can hold some value, but the mid to late 2nd rounders really seem to not offer any real value.

Couple things I saw about Mia/Lillard trade possibilities:

- if the Heat can offer something to OKC (like a 2030 1st) to free up the restrictions on their 2025 1st, that would allow them to trade their 2024. 2026, and 2028 1sts to POR (instead of just having two 1st available right now)

- it’s possible (but very unlikely) that the Heat could bring in the Oladipo and Strus deals into a massive multi-team deal, which would reduce the amount of salary POR would have to take back for Lillard.

The restrictions would be changed to just make it an unprotected pick in 2026, so they could trade their 2024, 2028, and 2030 picks to Portland. OKC might do that for free so there is a little more upside in 2026 when Butler is 36 and Lillard is 34, rather than almost certainly guaranteeing a non-lotto pick.

Three unprotected first rounders plus swaps in 25/27/29 would get the deal done.

Today is a slow day at work, so here are some free agency predictions.

  • The New Orleans Pelicans trade Dyson Daniels and CJ McCollum, and some sort of middling first to Minnesota for Karl-Anthony Towns and Kyle Anderson. This actually kind of makes real life sense to me.
  • Kyrie Irving – Re-signs with Dallas for 4 years and $200M with the fourth year partially guaranteed. As the Mavs are so strapped with old players on bad contracts, Doncic is traded in 2025 for a massive haul of players and picks.
  • James Harden – Re-signs with Philly for 3 years and $150M. Probably the best solution for both parties.
  • Khris Middleton – Re-signs with the Bucks for 4 years and $130M and they nearly immediately regret it. As the Bucks are so strapped with old players on bad contracts, Doncic Giannis is traded in 2025 for a massive haul of players and picks.
  • Draymond Green – Re-signs with the Warriors for 4 years and $125M with the fourth year non-guaranteed. Retires in three years with Curry.
  • Fred VanVleet – Signs with the Magic for 4 years and $140M (waiving Isaac and Harris in the process). Gary Harris signs with the Nuggets for 1 year and $4M as they lose Bruce Brown and all is right in the world.
  • Kyle Kuzma – Signs with the Sacramento Kings for 4 years and $125M. Such a Kings thing to do - trade a first round pick to dump salary to overpay a mediocre player.
  • Brook Lopez – Signs with Houston for 3 years and $70M, stunning the Bucks. He's old and turns out to be a bad signing, but at least he can jack up threes for their young guys.
  • D’Angelo Russell – Signs with Houston for 2 years and $40M. I actually legitimately think he is a very good fit in Houston for a year or two.
  • Austin Reaves – Signs an offer sheet with Indiana for his max (4/$98) and the Lakers match. White people in LA rejoice.
  • Max Strus – Signs a 4 year $80M contract with Indiana as their little consolation prize to Reaves. He's actually not a consolation prize, but a mediocre player on a bad contract.
  • Nikola Vucevic – Re-signs with the Bulls for 1 year and $22M. Signs for the taxpayer midlevel in 2024.
  • Cam Johnson – Detroit finally decides that somebody needs to shoot the ball, offers Cam Johnson a ridiculous deal of 4 years and $140M with a player option but Brooklyn matches. Turns out he is missing the D from the 3-D label and he becomes an albatross contract.
  • Jerami Grant – Grant has to wait out the market a bit and Detroit’s offer sheet to Johnson, but he ends up signing with Detroit for 4 years and $125M. He get's traded next offseason to somebody in desperate need of a combo forward.
  • Miles Bridges – Re-signs with Charlotte for 3 years and $50M (front loaded) with a player option on year three. Becomes the best contract in the NBA prior to spending 2025 in prison.
  • Jakob Poeltl – Re-signs with Toronto for 3 years and $75M. The league laughs at them.
  • Dillon Brooks – Signs a 1 year taxpayer midlevel ($5M or whatever) deal with Miami to hopefully rebuild his reputation and fill the hole left by Strus. He doesn't rebuilt his reputation.
  • Gabe Vincent – Re-Signs with Miami for 3 years $40M. He gets included in a midseason trade with Duncan Robinson and some firsts for somebody good.
  • Harrison Barnes – Signs a 2 year, $48M contract with the Rockets who now have a team full of adults!
  • Bruce Brown – Signs a 3 year, $52M contract with the Spurs. He misses Denver forever, but can wipe his tears with all his new crisp hundred dollar bills.
  • Russell Westbrook – 1 year $3M or whatever the max he can get from the Clippers. He gets traded mid-season into somebody's cap room and waived.

Man the Lakers and Mavs have had really good offseasons.

Homer glasses on, but have really loved what the Mavs have done this offseason. From old and expensive, they have put together a nice core of under 25 guys:
  • Luka Dončić (24)
  • Grant Williams (24)
  • Josh Green (22)
  • Jaden Hardy (21)
  • OMax Prosper (21)
  • Dereck Lively II (19)
Still a shot at Thybulle coming over, and hoping there is a trade (THJ plus a center on the roster) to upgrade the 5.

As is, this is the deepest team Luka has played with here.

totally agree on both. Kev seems to have been too high on most (except for Brooks and Vuc), so it did seem like a fairly restrained market in the end.

Clearly I have no idea what I'm doing, but I only totally missed the boat on a few things and I feel like other than FVV to Orlando, my thought process was valid.

The Brooks contract was ridiculous. Other than that, the most surprising thing to me is that no team signed Reaves to a bigger offer sheet.
totally agree on both. Kev seems to have been too high on most (except for Brooks and Vuc), so it did seem like a fairly restrained market in the end.
With San Antonio, Utah, Detroit, and Sacramento mostly punting on their cap space, it restricted some of the higher end spending.

  • Draymond Green – Re-signs with the Warriors for 4 years and $125M with the fourth year non-guaranteed. Retires in three years with Curry.

OKC too, right? Hollinger wrote a piece in the Athletic the other day noting that cap space just didn't seem to have the value that it has in years past.

You almost nailed that Dillon Brooks call though

RIP @Homer

I'm pretty skeptical of Grant Williams, but the draft alone makes me very pleased and are two archetypes that are exactly what we need (hope the guys live up to it and become role players or better). I loved going after Thybulle. Maybe Holmes has more left and got buried in Sac. Wish McGee had performed last year (I actually think he was hurt a lot, so hard to tell) and we could have done some sort of McGee/THJ/other stuff poo poo platter for Ayton that the Suns may have wanted.

Overall a fantastic offseason for Nico. That's two in a row with pretty damn limited resources, not much seeming possible, and him totally maximizing what he had.

Dejounte Murray just signed an extension for 4/$120m. I guess he’s not going anywhere for a while (was in some trade rumors). I think this is a good deal for Atl.
Really locking in that mid core. I guess they have to but nothing to get excited about imo
